I think it's a good idea

1524  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BitForce SC - full custom ASIC on: May 31, 2012, 12:15:49 AM
I just found the BIGGEST scam on the internet.

They TAKE your money and only promise to deliver a product. They are taking your money, in many cases, before they've even developed the prototypes!

SCAM!

I don't get the hostility towards BFL, especially calling is a scam all the time.

They had a concept, with calculated hash power, they pre sold it. The prototypes underperformed initial estimations, the told us, they lowered the price and refunded the higher price I paid.

That's natural progression, not a scam.

I reordered, it took longer than expected, but my additional units arrived. How is this a scam?

I've definitely enjoyed working with BFL, and will continue to be a customer. There's been plenty of bumps, but in the end, they've been delivering. That's not a scam.
1526  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: BAMT on a Hard Drive on: May 28, 2012, 02:09:11 AM
I have half my BAMT rigs that way. I use the win32 disk imager, I have a thumb drive installed, open the imager so it will allow me to select the thumb drive letter, then I remove the thumb drive and plug in the hard drive via USB, then it'll write to the hard drive.

If I try running the imager with just the hard drive plugged in, the imager won't load the drive letter.

9 weeks is just about right. Mine were 8 weeks, arrived monday.

What heatsink compound have you guys been using as a redo on the singles Huh

Personally, I despise thermal grease.  I plan to replace the grease in my mini rigs with phase change material (PCM).

Some info:
http://www.electronics-cooling.com/2002/05/understanding-phase-change-materials

Where I buy it:
http://www.opentip.com/Electronics/Startech-Heatsink-Thermal-Pads-Pack-p-1075383.html

Also on Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835230030

Experience has led me to love PCM for CPU and GPU cooling.  Never tried on an FPGA, but I'm definitely going to.

The feedback on Newegg doesn't exactly sound confidence-inspiring...

Dude, I use them on all my K7 CPUs, they totally keep 'em cool.

I work just down the street from our statue university. Their surplus outlet is always packed with equipment. 3 story building, 1st floor is almost completely dedicated to computers and servers.

I'veused Highpoint and was underwhelmed, especially by their support.

Areca is who I swear by now.

Get an 1880i, you won't be disappointed.

Dropped XFX a line, they're actually just gonna send me replacement fans, since they can be replaced without removing the heatsink.

Love XFX support!
1532  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Dead 7970 DD Fan Alternative on: May 17, 2012, 12:03:19 AM
So.... My XFX Back DD 7970 had a fan die. I figured I can RMA it, be without a card for a few weeks, or just do this:

Funny thing is the fan RPM's keep showing up as negative. I think I'll just unplug them

Nice thing is I'm at 1170MHz running smooth.

I'll update the thread if (or rather when) It fail, falls off, spectacularly chewing up the insides of the computer.
1533  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL Single + Delta = Whoosh! on: May 16, 2012, 04:46:13 PM
Can I ask WHY?

The description for the video reads:
"So I set my Single down on something sticking up by accident one day, and it caught the spinning fan blades and broke them off. I decided to fix it myself."
I'm not OP, but I did it first. Grin

Here's side by sides of the fans:

went to buy 4, insufficient quantity :-P Only 1 Avail.
1536  Other / Off-topic / BFL Single + Delta = Whoosh! on: May 15, 2012, 05:05:50 PM
Standard motherboard risers were needed to get it high enough over the heatsink. This is the first release of the BFL single

Using Delta fan, Dell P/N P2780.
Running it at full speed, simply connected the black to ground, the red to +12v from the computer's Power Supply.
@ 2.5a I'd not recommend connecting it to the BFL single's fan port!

1537  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5870 - low mhash on: May 15, 2012, 05:24:20 AM
Solved. It was something to do with the pci extender I was using.

What specifically? Or was just, don't use the extended and it worked okay?
1538  Other / Off-topic / Re: Max power draw for the fan header on the BFL single? on: May 14, 2012, 04:39:29 AM
I'm thinking about replacing the fans on my singles with something that has a bit more oomph. Are there any published specs on this to anyone's knowledge?

Definitely don't hook up a delta to the BFL internal jack. External PSU you'd be rockin and rollin
1539  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: How Thermal Compound Spreads on: May 14, 2012, 04:37:21 AM

Nice! Thanks for the heads up!
1540  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5870 - low mhash on: May 14, 2012, 04:36:15 AM
Yeah, that's way low. Have you checked the temps of the GPU and the VRMs?
