15901  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: TradeHill - shutting down trading / deposits and returning all client funds on: February 18, 2012, 03:39:20 AM
It's kind of strange that people feel compelled to stand up for Jered now considering the guy was a ghost and left all of his customers twisting in the wind for a month.  I just don't understand why you people want to get on this thread and kiss the loser's ass.

That's pretty harsh. Anyone who promotes a system that undermines the nation's fiat system is going to have to deal with infiltration and disruption from high level federal agents. You have no idea what shit is being thrown at these people and what they have to deal with.

well actually, i'm waiting for him to tell us exactly what that sh*t is.  i'm curious to know if it was significant or not.  and why haven't we heard more about the processor who supposed stole $100K from TH?  the whole community could learn quite a bit about what's going on if Jered would tell us.

From my experience fighting the federal government, its not always that simple. First, bringing all their problems to the forum would be a horrible idea. Most of what the government is doing to monetary revolutionaries isn't overt legal action, but covert disruption. Tradehill probably isn't sure themselves who the infiltrators in their organization are. Trying to bring that kind of thing to the forum would not only reveal their cards, but could also lead to infighting and other complicated issues, not to mention further speculation on this forum from trolls that would only cause further damage.

Most of you who complain work regular jobs and pay taxes to a corrupt government who uses your money to blow people up. Most of you have never stuck your neck out at all to change things in this country. Most of you need to STFU and be happy bitcoins and bitcoin exchanges even exist at all.

Bitcoin exchanges are part of a financial war that will determine the future of the entire globe. Stop acting like its all supposed to function like regular businesses. Realize that like any war there are going to be risks, and that you might get hurt.

well, first of all he's the one who brought up the payment processor who supposedly "stole", "withheld" $100K so we're only waiting to hear more about what he already promised to enlighten us with.  so lets start with that before you start slinging more arrows.

BFL ended up selling me the review unit, mostly because I refused to give it back. Smiley

Anyway:

Quote
Maybe for him about 12 weeks after they first promised 4-6 weeks?

The question was: "...if you know it's going to be longer than that it is wrong <sic>"

My response was appropriate.  They did not know it was going to be wrong.. I believe they offered that date in good faith, and nothing in this or the last thread is evidence to the contrary.

Quote
Or ... for me when Sonny's email was posted proving that the reason the first version didn't do what they advertised and accepted money for, was that it didn't exist (it was a simulation) back when they were advertising details and accepting money for it

I fail to see how it has anything to do with shipping times.

Quote
1.  do you live nearby Kansas where they're located and is that why you were able to go and view demo versions in person?

2.  is BFL a large corporation or a start up shop?

3.  why do you think they are so silent here on the forums?  their products sell for good money especially that Rig so i'd assume they'd have a dedicated person available to answer all questions and assuage the masses here.

4.  i left a phone message for them 3d ago and never received a call back or anything and from what i read around here others are also not getting any feedback.  you have to acknowledge at least that this is very strange behavior for a corp that stands to make huge amounts of money selling these devices.

1. Yes.
2. No, Yes.
3. Because the forums, like many forums of this type, are not a professional environment, and the people inhabiting them are barely fit for human contact. I, and many people here, are veteran Internet Forum goers, so we are familiar with the incredible amount of shit that flows through the screen.  Any uninitiated, sane human would be taken aback and disgusted by what passes as normal conversation here.  As Sonny was/is unfamiliar with online forums, he was understandably upset by the behavior and elected to not participate in it... probably a wise move, because you can't make a tower of gold out of a pile of shit, which is what 99.9% of these two threads are.  So why bother?  You can email them if you are so inclined.
4. I don't think they stand to make "huge amounts of money," and while I agree that perhaps 3 days without communication is something that should be addressed, I do know they are working exceptionally long hours to get these things out the door.  See below for more on this.

Quote
There have been communications coming out of BFL that they are hand assembling (you said so yourself).  They know its going to be slow, yet they STILL continue to promise delivery in 4-6 weeks for new orders.  So essentially they have to ship all outstanding orders AND the new orders all within 4-6 weeks.  GLWT.

They are hand assembling to meet the deadline as close as they can, instead of waiting through Chinese New Year and the "dead period" afterwards to get them assembled in Asia.  They are also "hand assembling" to accommodate the "revised" heatsink issue... this, I suspect, is what's taking the lions share of the time.  I probably would have drilled a hole in my head if I was staring down the number of units I had to cut that they are in the process of doing. I hope ya'll bought stock in dremel.

I expect Rev 2 units will be preassembled and ready to go.

Quote
I have compiled shares submitted for various times during the past 66 hours.  Hopefully, the decrease in hash speed is due to instability in his internet connection.  So for the last 66 hours the average hash speed is 739 MHash/s. The data is in the link below.

It has not been mining non-stop. I took it offline for awhile to move it from my house to downtown KC, and it's been offline a couple times while I did some other tests and adjustments to the software.  I will leave it online for the next 4 days or so without interruption if you want to start clocking it now, as of 18:00 CST.  If it crashes or is interrupted for some other reason, I will report that.

thanks for the answers Inaba.  i think you've done a service to the community by evaluating this product so thoroughly.  looks like a great unit to me.  thanks.

If all of that is true.. so be it.  But promising 4-6 weeks if you know its going to be longer than that is wrong.

At what point of this thread did it lead you to believe they knew it would be longer?

Inaba, clearly you  are a proponent of BFL and i have no problem with that coming in here late in the game of all this.

i have a few questions for you:

1.  do you live nearby Kansas where they're located and is that why you were able to go and view demo versions in person?

2.  is BFL a large corporation or a start up shop?

3.  why do you think they are so silent here on the forums?  their products sell for good money especially that Rig so i'd assume they'd have a dedicated person available to answer all questions and assuage the masses here.

thanks in advance.
15905  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Targeted By Latest FinCEN Ruling? – Implications Are Profound on: February 16, 2012, 10:12:58 PM
Mark may or may not be experiencing the same thing; we just don't know b/c he hasn't commented on it.

From what I can tell, even Mark have some issues working with banks.

so do i understand this right that Jered had problems with California banks specifically?  i never knew TH's banks were based there.

Marks are in HK and Japan so that may be encouraging.
15906  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Targeted By Latest FinCEN Ruling? – Implications Are Profound on: February 16, 2012, 10:01:46 PM
what i want to know is the inconsistency i'm sensing from Amir and Jered vs. Mark.  Amir and Jered have already determined that working with the banks has been a horrendous experience and very costly.  this i expected from the very beginning.

Mark may or may not be experiencing the same thing; we just don't know b/c he hasn't commented on it.
15907  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Targeted By Latest FinCEN Ruling? – Implications Are Profound on: February 16, 2012, 09:35:54 PM
here is the relevant part:

"Consistent with the standard for reporting suspicious activity under the BSA, if a financial institution knows, suspects, or has reason to suspect that a transaction conducted or attempted by, at, or through the financial institution involves funds derived from illegal activity or appears to be indicative of money laundering, terrorist financing, or other violation of law or regulation, the financial institution should file a suspicious activity report (SAR).8 As noted in the Joint Guidance, financial institutions that provide banking services to MSBs should file a SAR if they become aware that their customers are operating as unregistered or unlicensed MSBs.9"

as long as mtgox makes every reasonable effort to ensure he is not dealing with people engaged in these activities i fail to see how they can be accused of any wrongdoing.  every other bank in the world that services US citizens has the same regulation hanging over its head.

i fail to understand why all the crackheads made a big fuss about how Bitcoin would be the currency of the drug dealers last year.  i, for one, don't think Silk Road had anything to do with last Springs rally.  i just think it was a good idea whose time had come.  its time to disentangle that myth from Bitcoin.
15908  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Targeted By Latest FinCEN Ruling? – Implications Are Profound on: February 16, 2012, 09:22:32 PM
so is this irrespective of citizenship of the owner of the money transmitter business?  Mag Tux is French.

sounds like the only requirement is that the business interacts with US citizens within our borders?

that did it, duh.

under the qr code there is the copy to clipboard button Wink

i know that.  but how do i translate that to the alphanumeric priv key?
15911  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitcoinSpinner on: February 16, 2012, 07:15:31 PM
Jan,

i'm trying to import Spinners private key from my Android to the new Armory wallet of etotheipi's just for testing purposes.

his input field requires typing the private key.  when i access the private key in Spinner its displayed as a QR code.  how should i accomplish this?
15912  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MTGOX new privacy policy??? on: February 16, 2012, 06:04:06 PM
So I now have to go through the same bs as opening and using a bank account. Basically defeats the whole idea of Bitcoin....

Bitcoin does not end with MtGox.  What are you doing here ?

It's a bad sign. What's the point of Bitcoin if it becomes strangled by banking rules and regulations is my point. Why not just keep and use my over regulated bank accounts? I'm not dumping my mining rigs yet, but I'm moving on from Gox.

Or we can forego the anonymity aspect of Bitcoin (for the time being), thus allowing us to move forward and become mainstream, always knowing that not only an anonymity aspect exist, but will be developed even stronger.

~Bruno~

There is no point in fighting a system that will crush you, when you can beat (And not Bit!) the system from inside out. And who knows, once everything is done, some well established company will see the beauty of Bitcoin and may start rethinking their business model. Still, our goal is to push forward Bitcoin and make it mainstream and once a large number of transaction are made using BTCs, then... we will be able to enjoy Bitcoin's amazing features. Once again our goal as an exchange is not to think 3 month ahead, but at least 3 years ahead of things!

how do you guys view the fact that Amir Taaki has stated publicly that his determined actions to comply with the UK regulatory laws have cost Intersango thousands of lost pounds/dollars and that it has been a royal waste of time?
15913  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - The most advanced Bitcoin Client in existence! (v0.5.1-alpha) on: February 16, 2012, 05:43:31 PM
eto,

i'm getting an error trying to install PyQt4, 64 bit version.  was able to install all other Windows 64 bit packages except this one.
15914  Other / Off-topic / Re: Dorm Mining :) on: February 16, 2012, 05:24:13 PM
Has anybody considered renting a weekly dive motel room for about $150/wk with all utilities paid. Fire up the rig and crank up the air. Watch free cable and enjoy free internet. This is not a joke.

I rent a business office in the heart of Silicon Valley for a tad over $200 a month and mine at the admittedly pathetic rate of about 3200 MH/s, so it's not really generating a profit yet, but merely pays the rent and the DSL. I have, however, ordered several BFL singles in order to finally achieve a positive cash flow.

When did you purchase?  Please post a pic once you receive.  I'm looking forward to someone actually owning one (I know that one guy got one on loan).  Now it's time to see someone actually receive one they purchased!

The first one about 4 to 6 weeks ago.  Roll Eyes
But seriously, about 5 weeks ago.
I have no idea whether that puts me in the first, second, or third batch... Embarrassed

the real question is if and when you're gonna get one.
15915  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockexplorer is either Down or Running Extremely Slow & Stuck at 166899 Blocks on: February 16, 2012, 04:51:41 PM
Just to be clear, you guys are complaining that theymo's block explorer service is down, not the block chain itself.  Everything looks ok on Bitcoin Monitor.

Of course we're talking about blockexplorer.com. How can be block chain down?

you'd be surprised at how many noobs will think blockexplorer IS the blockchain.
15916  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1GH/s, 20w, $700 (was $500) — Butterflylabs, is it for real? (Part 2) on: February 16, 2012, 04:46:16 PM
Video of the device?  What do you want the video to show?  A box with a red light? heh

Even though it could be doctored, maybe a video of the box hooked up to a computer with a display on the screen of mhash/s.

Also, a walk through from opening the box, hooking it up and getting the software running.

I realize that's a lot to ask, but it's certainly something I'd be watching right now if it was available. Smiley

that would not be too long to ask.  what would it take?  like 5 min?
15917  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who's REALLY in charge of this country? on: February 16, 2012, 03:51:02 PM
Don't confuse power and influence with "being in charge."  Big tech companies have power and influence, sure. But to say that "they are in charge" is a wild stretch. And even to say that anyone is "in charge" is a bit misguided. We live in a complex economy, with many interests pulling in many directions - governments, banks, financial companies, tech companies, influence groups, on and on. And even within these subsets, they don't always agree. Banks fight with each other, tech companies fight with each other.  There is no monolithic power structure - though there are many powers to be fearful of.

of course the "in charge" is more of a headline grabber than reality but otoh Wall St needs a story to push when selling stocks.  w/o people are buying the Nasdaq, the stock pushers make money; when they aren't selling stocks then they don't, at least legitimately.  the tech giants are rolling in the printed money and fattening their war chest; look at Apple.  in this sense, they are "in charge" and can call some pretty big shots if they want, as in SOPA.

Quote
On your other point, about a tech company buying a stake in Gox, I'm sure they will do such a thing when they wish to. There is no need for Tux to pursue these people, and doing so only makes Bitcoin look desperate for attention. Further, it is highly unlike a company like Google would mess around with the grey area legality of the Bitcoin world, at least not openly. It's too much trouble and risk for a large company.

It is small companies, and prescient VC groups, who will run this space for a while.

its not about desperation and i don't think it would be perceived as such.  its about a merging of common interests.  the REAL economy and the tech giants need something like Bitcoin desperately to prevent being dragged down the black hole by our criminal financial industry and incompetent politicians.  its the exact parallel argument for gold except that i think Bitcoin works much better.  we as the Bitcoin economy need someone like Google to solidify our existence so that the innovation and investment can continue forward with more confidence.

in time i'm sure this will all fall into place.

IPs will now automatically be banned (temporarily) if they connect much faster than once per second.

http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/blockexplorer.com

It looks that BE is still down.

Just to be clear, you guys are complaining that theymo's block explorer service is down, not the block chain itself.  Everything looks ok on Bitcoin Monitor.

There's nothing stopping anyone here from transacting anonymously on a one to one basis.  If you're not happy with goxes policies don't use them.  Afaic, whatever they're doing to stay in business is fine with me as I have nothing to hide.
15920  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My Testimony - New Hampshire State House on: February 16, 2012, 12:31:40 AM

This is a sad turn of events for a lot of entrepreneurs in various US States.

Is there a list compiled of what states *are* good to operate a Bitcoin business out of?

I imagine that the rules are going to vary by state and by instrument (cash, cheques, money orders, etc).

-p

Its not a sad turn of events in the sense that these ridiculous laws have been in place for years before Bitcoin.  Erik is just trying to get one state to overturn its local version much like the gold and silver currency revolt in states like Utah

Correct - the money transmitter laws are not a new development. This type of REPEAL of these laws, in one state, IS a new development, and it's very good Smiley

As a funny anecdote, the issue of terrorist financing came up during the discussion. Fortunately, the Reps basically laughed about it, and didn't take it seriously - calling it a red herring. This was a pleasant surprise.

Erik, this really does represent an above and beyond the call of duty for the community. Thank you.
