We have about 5 hours to reach the switch point for PoS.

The trading is pretty thin in the coinedup, so a few BTCs can make huge moves there. We are not worried about the price at this time, it's more a trader's game now. At least an exchange provide a facility for those miners who want to buy and sell. We will support and build Grain as usual and will enhance its value by having games, shops, services etc that accept GRAs.

Not happy! Been waiting for an exchange and now I am in the car going away for the weekend with no grain wallet

On the bright side..... Congrats everyone!

don't worry, you have plenty of time.... we don't do pump and dump, it's a long term coin, many good things will come Wink

"Grain also provides 5% annual interest on the grained held. The interest will be paid about every 2 weeks."

What that means? I should keep my grain in wallet for 2 week untouched so it will grow on 5%? Or it in some fixed moment increase on 5% in all wallets in the world?

5% is annual rate. By holding the coins in wallet for 2-4 weeks at least, you will see pos blocks generated, it is similar to mining pow blocks. Those pos blocks will generate some coins for you, it will give 5% annual return if the coins are held in wallet.

It's on coined up now!

Wow, this is great news!

Yes Grain is on coinedup now, in LTC market:

bosian

what official nodes needed in the grain.conf for 1.3 wallet?

I don't have official nodes, it is not the initial launch. Any peers should work. Please use the peers posted in the thread (for example, by bee7).

It's good to see that everyone is waiting for the returning of PoS block generations. I hope everything will be smooth when we pass through the switchover block at 92000 in a day or two (pretty sure it will, as it worked fine in my tests).

Now I want to give you an overview of the issues with PoW/PoS so we will have a realistic expectations on the PoS.

From my experiences and my observations of many other PoW/PoS coins, the PoW/PoS coins are far less stable than the PoW only coins. The commonly observed problems are:
(1). PoW gets jammed (happened to many coins). Many fixed the issue by forking a new blockchain (including GRA), some did not bother to fix (or dev vanished?), like ADT and COL are still in PoS only mode.
(2). PoS stopped, like what happened to Grain, this is due to the out of sequence in time stamps.
(3). Lots of PoS generation affecting PoW block generation.

The issue (3) can be an annoying one. According to current algorithm, the PoW block time can be extended up to 12X the normal time, if there are a lot PoS generated in-between. This is a normal behavior to maintain the overall block time. And we don't expect PoS always generate a lot all the time (it's controlled by its own diff adjusting). Another possible issue with a lot PoS generation is that it might affect PoW diff, and cause orphans (and I still need to check the code to see why - my understanding is that the two diffs are separated). I saw this issue occurred with Lucky7Coin end of last year, it caused a lot of issues in mining (virtually all the mining pools are stopped as 90% are orphans), and most blocks generated were PoS blocks, with some PoW in-between (the PoW generated time increased between 2X to 12X). The problem is gone now after the PoS generation subsides in Lucky7coin.

The Grain is based on Lucky7Coin code (mainly to use its superblock generation algorithm), which in turn based on Novacoin/PPCoin. We adjusted many parameters and hopefully the same issue will not occur here. We also have all the fixes from PoW/PoS (like the fix from Balthazar on self-forking). For now we still allow the max PoW generation block time be 12X the normal one if needed. We could change it to less multiples such as 3X used (fixed by a patch in) Novacoin codebase, so it could make the mining of PoW less disruptive.

Anyway, just want the community knows the status of PoW/PoS coin in general, and let's hope the Grain will work great Wink

Version 1.3 Released. Version 1.3 is a mandatory upgrade, so please upgrade as soon as possible to avoid a fork. You must upgrade before the block 92000 (we are at block 83776 now - will take less than 3 days to arrive block 92000). So please upgrade now!

Version 1.3 fixes the PoS block generation issue, and it has the latest checkpoints. Download links for the Windows Client are updated in OP and source in github are updated too.

mining pools, please upgrade to version 1.3!

If I had a backup of my roaming folder, would that have everything I needed if my hard drive failed? Or are there other files that I need ?

wallet.dat is all you need to backup really

I was trying to find an easy way to backup ALL of my wallets at once, so that should do it shouldn't it?  that is where the wallet.dat files are stored?

You can backup the whole dir, but all you need is the wallet.dat, as yorich said, the rest can be reconstructed when you start the client.

Thanks everyone and all that sent me encouragements.

I found the issue of pos, why it is stopped. It related to the issue that network time sometimes messed up.

For pos, the last pos block (block 62235) has a network time before the previous pos block (block 62234), this messed everything and caused the pos generation does not meet the criteria so it is rejected:

Quote
>> Height = 62235, fProofOfStake = 1, nActualSpacing = -575
>> pindexPrev->GetBlockTime() = 1388562077, pindexPrev->nHeight = 62235
>> pindexPrevPrev->GetBlockTime() = 1388562652, pindexPrevPrev->nHeight = 62234

I have a fix for that, and it works in my test (generated pos block again). But this is a hard fork. I will provide a new version of the client, and it is a mandatory upgrade. I will give about 3 days before the switch over happens. Before the switch over happens, the coin will generate only the pow blocks (as it is now).

The same issue seems occur at pow block, that's why sometimes in block explorer you will see the time messed up. I do notice that this occurs in many other coins. In general this will not cause much problems, but sometimes it could cause diff behave strangely (usually transient). The network time issue is a broader issue which may need some revisit on the fundamentals of the cryptocoin, which I will not address now (this will require a lot more work and maybe a team work).

With my fix, the next time network time issue in pos should not cause a stop in pos generation.

A new version of the client will be provided some time later today or tomorrow.  Wink

Add Grain (GRA) please.

Grain has been launched for 1+ month, is a PoW/PoS coin, and has a big miner community. It's certainly very different from a coin launched a few days ago Wink The main thread has almost 70 pages:

176  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GRA] Grain - New PoW/PoS coin | Fast, secure | Version 1.2 Released! on: January 07, 2014, 07:51:01 PM
It looks like the pos generation is somehow blocked, so since block 62236 (block 62235 is the last PoS block generated - as mkimid correctly pointed out), only pow block generated.

The PoW blocks generated since followed exactly the target block time:

Block 80128: Jan 7, 19:30:56
Block 63000:  Jan 1, 14:32

17128 PoW blocks generated in about 6 days 5 hrs. Theoretical generated blocks =  6*2880 + 5 * 120 = 17880 blocks.

I am still investigating the reasons why PoS blocked. It is weird that this coin changes from PoW/PoS->PoS->PoW/PoS->PoW. Unfortunately all the basic code are from PPCoin/NovaCoin, and only some params have been changed. So the behavior is weird. Maybe keeping it as a pow is OK, at least all the mining is fine with predefined intervals. With PoS the PoW intervals will be altered depending on how frequently the PoS will be generated.

Anyway I am trying to find the cause of it, and will let you know my findings.

I've been mining them off and on for a week or so.

Can anyone tell me when I will notice the interest / proof of stake thing kick in?

Will I see something in the wallet that will show me?

From the OP;

Quote
Grain also provides 5% annual interest on the grained held. The interest will be paid about every 2 weeks.

It will show up under "Stake:" in your wallet, I believe.

The pos will be generated after you hold the coin in the wallet for 15-30 days.

Some people reported not seeing pos blocks recently, I am investigating the issue. mkimid reported he saw one block that may have pos, can you post the block? The pos can be generated inside a pow block too. Different tx in the same block.

One member reported that the wallet seems busy generating pos and took 100% CPU, if the situation persists and if it bothers you, you can always transfer the balance to a new wallet, and that should get rid of the 100% CPU thing. To do it, exit the client, and restart the client and transfer immediately after the wallet in sync. Usually the pos processing starts a few minutes after you start the client.

Any news on exchanges wanting to add Grain?

well, if we can grow the coin... at some point exchanges will decide to add GRA. there are no guarantees about getting listed, but GRA has a good community growing and if we support the coin and promote GRA where appropriate we can continue growing.

 i second that

 +1

Yup, community and support is all that matters at first

Exchange will come for sure. The most important for now is we build a solid coin and with a good community, all exchanges know the Grain, they will add when they think it is solid and with good support. I think it will be soon Smiley
