161  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Portal 1 for 3 BTC on: May 03, 2011, 02:23:33 PM
Basically, I'm gifting you a spare copy of Portal that I got when I pre-ordered Portal 2 (I bought the Orange Box which already had Portal). So far, I don't think there is a way to swap games that you have in your Library. Also, I've never used bitcoin-OTC, how does that work?
Sorry if I'm a little slow here. After I send the bitcoins to you, how will you get the game to me? Through Steam? By mail?

Bitcoin-OTC is a neat little service that, among other things, allows people to rate each other. For example, if the transaction goes smoothly, we would each give each other good ratings. You mentioned that you were new, so I thought suggesting bitcoin-OTC might help you in the course of overcoming newbie prejudice.

I am down for this deal. I only signed up for Steam yesterday and I don't know how to transfer games yet. Can you briefly explain the process?

If you like, we can rate each other on the transaction in bitcoin-OTC. It can help you build your reputation.

The way the government handles IP doesn't make IP bad, only the government. The same could be said about regular property.
Intellectual property requires governmental enforcement of some kind to exist.
164  Other / Off-topic / Re: Intellectual Property: Intellectually Bankrupt on: May 03, 2011, 02:12:30 AM
Yet, if every member of the group helped instead of hoping to get the cure for free, the research would go faster.
Helping the effort should be voluntary though. Intellectual property is non-voluntary because even if you procure a product through your own labor, you don't actually own it because you're bound to whatever IP restrictions the rights-holder attached to it. Anyway, most members of healthy, IP-free societies will voluntarily contribute, according to the best of their abilities, to beneficial causes. The thought of a few slackers not contributing to a good cause seems less harmful than lucky creators using government force to ransom good ideas that are otherwise free to share.

Naturally, if a group of people is affected by some illness and there is no cure, it is possible they'll pool their resources to fund the research of such a cure. The question is, how many of these people will participate in the funding, knowing that they could get the cure for free once it is discovered.
People will contribute to the best of their ability. Plenty of researchers use funds that come from voluntary, non-refundable contributions already.

How do you argue against IP if you stand by that point anyways? If all forms are of either energy, matter, or both, and that energy and matter are equivalent, then intellect is as much of a property as anything else.
Perhaps you have to reject or at least redefine property then in order to reconcile the issue.

That's a good book on the topic. You can buy the print version if you want. It has lots of good examples explaining how IP harms us and why we're better off with out it. I got into it about two years ago and it definitely affected my beliefs, to say the least.

I should add that the author suggests government subsidy (instead of patent rights which are another type of subsidy) as a model for pharmaceutic research, which I now disagree with. I still think patents are bad though.

Cool! Now if only they would catch Emmanuel Goldstein I could start sleeping with the light off again.

You can fight it with education, open debate, and ostracism.
You can't do any of those things to ideas. You can only do them to people. Your target ideas will always exist, even in the minds of people who do not subscribe to them.

When it's perfectly acceptable for an American President to talk about a fighting Communism, fighting Nazism, fighting <insert totalitarian ideology>, why is it unacceptable to talk about fighting Islam?
It's never acceptable because it doesn't make sense. You can't fight, let alone defeat, an idea.
171  Other / Off-topic / Re: Osama Bin Laden dead on: May 02, 2011, 02:59:48 PM
This is an interesting point. In your opinion, then, what would justice look like for this situation? If Osama was fairly tried and found guilty, what would be the best way to serve justice? Monetary compensation for families? Execution by drowning in pig's blood? Life sentence in jail?  I'm curious to know what you think justice would look like.
I think dropping him off in front of a NYC firehouse would have done the trick. That or life imprisonment. Of course, as long as we don't see a death certificate, there's still a chance, right?

I've heard some people say that trying him and burying him would make him a martyr and give his supporters a shrine. I think that that doesn't make sense because he's already a martyr and Islam strictly prohibits idol worship. Furthermore, I don't see why a trial might preclude a sea burial later on.
172  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Technical Analysis on: April 30, 2011, 09:48:41 PM
We've gone super-exponential .... seller's strike continues, the question is at what price do the big seller's come out of the woodwork? Those guys have mined the first 2.5 million coins for example.
They're not going to buy dollars. They're going to buy a heroic amount of shrooms. The dealers will hold on to much of those bitcoins because the raw materials for shroom production are cheap. Therefore they'll sell the bitcoins slowly on an as needed basis.

174  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin on Ubuntu 11.04 on: April 30, 2011, 02:45:19 AM
Everything seems to be working nicely now. I just had to go into classic mode and uninstall and reinstall the nvidia driver. Unity is pretty neat.
175  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin on Ubuntu 11.04 on: April 29, 2011, 03:56:29 PM
Anyone else get burned with the upgrade? At first I all I could get was a black screen, but after a bit of mucking around, I could get to a classic desktop with an Nvidia driver that's active but not in use. It also boots up slower than with 10.10. I've been poking around the Ubuntu forums, but I'm still not sure what to do about it.
176  Economy / Economics / Re: Anarcho-capitalism, Monopolies, Private dictatorships on: April 29, 2011, 12:21:42 PM
Please don't conflate "anarcho"-capitalism with anarchism.

If you'd like to learn about anarchism, even for the sake of improving your arguments, I'd recommend An Anarchist FAQ.

yeah but above all:  how messy Cheesy
That all depends on the group.

The "Linux style" conference presentation method is to ask that people interrupt whenever they have a question.  It's really free form, and permits the audience to direct the speaker to the audience's main interests.
How cool.
179  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BitDrop (or ShadyDeliveryNetwork), a non-robotic courier system on: April 28, 2011, 07:02:59 PM
I was under the impression that the system would be taking care of package routing, why should the customer be penalized in that case? A runner should be able to notify the system of any exceptions (damage to package, unable to deliver, etc) and it will give them a drop off point leading the package back into the system.
I was assuming that the sender would have lied to the system for a cheaper rate. Presumably, private routes would cost more than routes without privacy.
180  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BitDrop (or ShadyDeliveryNetwork), a non-robotic courier system on: April 28, 2011, 06:57:29 PM
Now, there also has to be some contingency for when a runner receives a package that violates his requirements. I think the runner should just dispose of the package as he pleases.
