161  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Oh great, now IS is training pilots on: October 18, 2014, 06:23:02 PM
if they really have taken to the air over Aleppo, it would mark a whole new level of military sophistication for the feared group.

Hardly.

Getting a plane like that to fly takes one or two mechanics that know what they're doing and someone capable of flying it. Considering IS contains people that used to be in the Iraqi army, it's not surprising if some expertise in this area is available. The captured Migs are ancient, so all there is to know about them is out in the open and there are no high-tech gizmos that are hard to fix/replace.

If IS starts to use these planes for combat (or one too many parade-flights), either the Syiran army or the US will pop them out of the sky without any problems. Those planes are simply too old to still be competitive against modern arms.

Part of  it is that the planes are outdated, but most of it is how effective a pilot can a guy who finds a plane in the desert be?
162  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ebola virus is a hoax on: October 18, 2014, 04:08:57 PM
You're simpletons if you believe this garbage. Oh, the government created Ebola and put fluoride in my water and won't let me wear my tin hat. Then in a whinier voice: If you don't believe me, you're from Monsanto!

Riiiiiiight. The only one selling anything here is Dank, and he's peddling his bullshit in hopes someone dumb enough will give him money to have his wastoid festival with fellow drug addicts in a field somewhere.

Claim:   The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) owns a patent on Ebola.

MIXTURE:
TRUE: The CDC patented a strain of Ebola in 2010.

FALSE: The CDC created Ebola and obtained a patent for it to restrict or profit from the development of a vaccine.

Example:   [Collected via email, October 2014]

Is there any truth to the rumor that The United States Government is one of 6 owners of a patent on the Ebola virus? Does this mean they have the right to demand blood samples from any victims? Can they force those on government health care to take experimental Ebola vaccines that they develop? Is the CDC purposely allowing Ebola to enter the country in order to cause a "run" on a newly developed vaccine?

Origins:   The 2014 Ebola outbreak began in December 2013 and is the deadliest recorded since the discovery of ebolaviruses in 1976. The severity and scope of the 2014 Ebola outbreak has caused significant global concern over the threat posed by the disease, and a number of rumors have resulted.

One pervasive strain of rumors centers around "ownership" of what many understand to be the Ebola virus: more specifically, ownership of a patent granted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2010, Patent No. CA2741523A1. An abstract for that patent reads:

The invention provides the isolated human Ebola (hEbola) viruses denoted as Bundibugyo (EboBun) deposited with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ("CDC"; Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America) on November 26, 2007 and accorded an accession number 200706291.

As the Ebola outbreak intensified, concern over the spread of the disease steadily increased; and the seemingly-suspect CDC patent on Ebola began to circulate on social media. Many users interpreted use of words like "invention" to indicate the U.S. government or its agents had literally invented Ebola in the lab as a tool to control the population or push forward an agenda involving expensive vaccines and cures. However, the 2014 Ebola outbreak is due to a strain of the virus known as Ebola Zaire and not the EboBun strain for which the CDC patent was obtained, so any pharmaceutical dollars to be made would not be affected by a patent protecting a strain of the virus not central to the current outbreak.

Speculation often centers upon the reasons any agency (government or privately held) would patent a virus such as Ebola if not to restrict the development of a cure or to capitalize on the profits from a potential cure. But at the time the Ebola patent was granted in 2010, the area of human gene patents was not as legally clear as it became following a Supreme Court decision a few years later. On 13 June 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on the case of Association For Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics in respect to whether isolated genetic material was patent eligible. Justice Clarence Thomas opined in the decision that "genes and the information they encode are not patent-eligible ... simply because they have been isolated from the surrounding genetic material," and he added:

In this case, by contrast, Myriad did not create anything. To be sure, it found an important and useful gene, but separating that gene from its surrounding genetic material is not an act of invention.

On 9 October 2014, professor of biological sciences at Purdue University and Ebola researcher David Sanders addressed rumors about the CDC's patent on Ebola. Sanders explained that overall the practice of patenting "life forms" is not uncommon for the CDC, noting that patents like the one the CDC holds on the EboBun strain of Ebola can circumvent for-profit patenting as well as facilitate broader research:

The CDC does hold some patents on life forms, but it generally does this for the common good, so a commercial company can't come along and patent it. The CDC lets researchers work with the strain without fees.

Until the Supreme Court's 2013 decision on isolated genetic material, the ambiguity involved made such patents a potential necessity. In light of it the CDC's intent in patenting Ebola appears to be far less nefarious.

164  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bitcoin fund for Ebola victims and their families. Start it? on: October 17, 2014, 05:40:48 PM
Doesn't seem like the kind of thing you'd raise money for. It's kind of a binary outcome: you contract the disease and die, or you contract the disease and recover and life resumes as normal. This is a different type disaster than, say, a hurricane, where survivors can't resume their lives as normal because they've lost all their possessions and home.

But I think your heart is in the right place. If anything, donate to an anti-poverty charity that works in Africa, after all, it's poverty that prevents the communities being ravaged by Ebola to build the health and sanitation services that protect people from coming into contact with Ebola in the first place. I think that's where any donations can do the most good.

This is without a doubt the dumbest thing you've ever posted. It's one thing to spout your stupid I'm a light being destined to bring peace to the world bullshit, but this garbage post is now belittling all the people who are suffering and who have died because of this disease. And to be clear, we're talking about REAL suffering; the type of suffering that comes from an inability to access clean water and basic human sanitation that leads to exposure to Ebola. And here comes some hippy asshole on the internet, who takes for granted his ability to choose to be a degenerate drug addict in a developed nation, calling their suffering and their deaths so unimportant that we can just pretend they're not happening.

These people are dealing with real poverty and real suffering, not the type of suffering associated with choosing to be worthless and unemployed and bitching about how evil the world is because no one will give you money so you can have a hippy festival in a field.

You, Dank, are propagating evil by ignoring real human suffering in pursuit of your own self-aggrandizement. How does it feel to be regarded as a monster? Why don't you attempt to help another human being for once instead of being a useless prophet of his own religion, so obsessed with himself he doesn't notice all the ways he could make the world better other than fucking wishing.

You are forgiven friend.  Honesty is the true character that matters.

Oh well Dank forgave you. All your problems are solved. I heard he's made out of light and can levitate. Granted, he's the one who said those things, but I guess you should still feel better about your situation now.
170  Other / Politics & Society / Re: More paedophile talk! on: October 16, 2014, 07:14:03 PM
There are many children much more intelligent than adults.

Now one is talking about pure intelligence. Emotional maturity =/= intelligence. Cognitive development =/= intelligence. Intelligence is not an indication that a child is incapable of being taken advantage of.

The only thing limiting some children from dominating adults in the workplace is the fact that it's illegal for them to work or gain work experience.

C'mon. Really.

It's only illegal for minors to have sex with people over 18.

This is not universally true, it obviously varies by jurisdiction. The fact that it varies by jurisdiction evidences that the matter has been considered locally and decided to be appropriate. While your assertion that 18 is an arbitrary cutoff is correct, advancing the idea that because it's arbitrary the problem it's attempting to solve doesn't exist is incorrect.

These ageist policies are created because females 18+ dominate the vote. As a result social policy favors females 18+ and does not favor females -18 and males in general. To be more exact, the exacerbated age of consent laws in modern society are a direct result of liberal feminist.
src: http://egomoral.com/feminism-and-age-of-consent-laws-in-modern-culture/

Correlation, not causation. The source you provided makes assertions that it does to attempt to back up with any historical or verifiable facts. Further, it uses as examples customs of pre-modern civilization to lend credence to the idea that now we're doing sexual practices wrong. Because pre-modern civilizations got so, so many things right, that we should be looking to them for ideas on how we should organize the most complex and emotional part of our lives.  Roll Eyes

What is the solution to ageism? Simple... let parents 'caretakers' be responsible for their childrens'dependants' actions and freedoms. Caretakers are able to individually asses their dependents. If the government'tax payers' insist on taking care of other people's children, let them pay them, and claim responsibility for them as well.

This is not dissimilar to how it works right now. The only thing you're advocating to change is that adults should be able to have sex with children if it's OK with their parents apparently.

It's important for society to have rational policies so that more efficient societies don't pass them up economically.

What the HELL does age of consent laws have to do with economic viability?

why not try to give Dank a 3rd chance?

they say third time's a charm

it costs us nothing though..

Ok, you loan him the bitcoins and see what happens, since it costs nothing.

wtf, are you talking about?

why would anyone give him a loan when he can't repay his old loans?

I'm talking about creating a new pay plan for him to return the loan

Probably let him in on discussing the pay plan

My bad, I thought you meant give him a third chance as in loan him btc because maybe this time will be different, not restructure his current debt. Sorry I misunderstood! Grin

I'd like to point out that at the time I made my posts, I was under the (probably mistaken) belief that you were in a western country. The fact the judicial system is unfair throughout most of the rest of the world is a consideration. I think intent matters here, and it does not seem you intended to spy, although we also have been presented with only one side of the facts.

I would back the church up anyday if they remembered the 13th century and killed all the dirty fuckers..

And no I'm not homophobic..

Does that sound not homophobic to you?

'Hey, I ain't got nothing against the gays, I'm just saying I would support an institution that killed all those dirty fuckers, you know what I mean? Cuz God 'n Jesus and stuff.'

thanks to the gays, having a rapists kid is becoming more and more acceptable as woman dumps family

Holy shit. I just want to emphasize that there are people who actually that think this way.

Tangentially, the Word of the Day on dictionary.com is mythomane: noun; a person with a strong or irresistible propensity for fantasizing, lying, or exaggerating.

Quotes:
"Having lived with a mythomane ," she wrote, "I know they believe everything they say; they are not conscious liars, they invent to increase everything about themselves and their lives and believe it."
-- Nicholas Shakespeare, “A Life Less Ordinary,” Granta , 1998,

Damn, that sounds spot on!

I would suggest for your debate that answers to questions be limited to 100 or so words.
178  Other / Off-topic / Re: HOW TO CONTROL THE NEWS AND IT'S TWITTER FETISH on: October 14, 2014, 07:16:38 PM
Ebola isn't an issue in this country. It's spread through bodily fluids which is why it devastates third world nations that don't have decent medical facilities or sewage and sanitation. Basically, don't touch poop or vomit, and don't open-mouth kiss anyone with Ebola and you'll be fine. As far the media not covering it, Fox News is having a field day trying to convince everyone the world is ending over this.

Ebola is not an issue in the developed world. Isolated cases from people going to Africa and not having the proper protection and bringing it back is as bad as it's going to get. Maintaining otherwise is driving hysteria and twitter-based coverage you just blamed the media for propagating in your prior posts in this thread.
179  Other / Off-topic / Re: The great debate - dank vs vod on: October 14, 2014, 03:31:46 PM
Greed is the reason I cannot get financed for any of the projects I wish to work on.
Really? Nothing to do with the fact you are homeless, jobless and bankrupt.

Actually, he's correct.  He's too greedy to put his million man music festival on hold for a while and work.  I can't think of anything much greedier than to ask all of society to change exactly the way he wishes.

Apparently he's bad at logic too, for if he really believed his magic festival would change the world, he'd sack up and work for the evil warmongers for a little while so that he could fund his own magic world-saving festival himself. Obviously, that would ultimately accomplish the greater good.

From Dank's perspective:

Situation one: Ask for handouts with promises of using it to solve all the world's problems with your magic powers. Get none. Do nothing about it but complain that society is evil and doesn't understand your magicness, thus allowing everything wrong with the world you claim you can solve to continue unchanged.

Situation two: Get a job for the evil empire yada yada and earn the money to fund your own magic whatever-thing that will save the world.

Clearly Dank is choosing to do the first of these choices, and that makes Dank evil, for he claims to have the power to vanquish evil but won't. His excuse is he will commit no evil by getting a job, thereby committing greater evil by doing nothing.

Congrats Dank, under your logic, you're either the greater evil than those you rail against, or a hypocrite who doesn't even believe his own powers and doesn't want to be proven a fraud when he doesn't become a magic light being.

Did anyone ever play Command & Conquer: Red Alert for the computer? It was real time strategy game set in WWII, except the Russians had chrono-technology so you were basically re-fighting WWII as the Allies to keep the Russians from taking over Europe.

That's my all-time favorite computer game.

Aaaaand, I just learned it's now free-ware and available for download. Excuse me while I revisit my childhood for the next several days...
