1601  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The "Why We Trust Mt. Gox" thread on: March 02, 2011, 11:44:04 PM
The anarchist bit I understand.
I doubt you truly do.

But if you do not know MtGox, and EXPECT no recourse through legal means, why would you give money to him.
He offers a service that is useful to me, at a price I find reasonable. I trust him based on his reputation, which is earned, unlike a state granted license.

You would trust him less if he was legitimate, huh...    So by being illegitimate you trust him more...  And you don't personally know him... Yea that is an anarchist...
You don't understand. I consider the state to be illegitimate. Anyone who rejects the state gains legitimacy in my eyes. Not yours, but mine.

Lets assume Baron stole the Money, why does MtGox care?
The money was stolen while placed in his care. His business's reputation is at stake. Let's say you had 9000 BTC in your mtgox account and it was stolen. Would you continue to do business with him if he just said "too bad" and let the thief get away with the money?

Is MtGox going to keep it for himself?
I find this outcome highly unlikely. Again, his reputation is on the line. Why would he risk it?
1602  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The "Why We Trust Mt. Gox" thread on: March 02, 2011, 11:36:24 PM
If I stole $9,000 dollars from one bank, store, person, whatever and deposited the money into a bank account, the bank doesn't care or want to know where I got the money
If you think the state endorsed banking system will let you keep money under suspicion of theft, you are sorely mistaken. Your accounts will be frozen and unless you can answer all questions to the satisfaction of the police, you will never see your money again. In fact, suspicion of illegal activity isn't even necessary in order for your money to be stolen by the police. There have been many cases in the U.S. where an individual traveling with a large amount of cash, absent any indicators of illegal activity, had their money seized by the government.

Issue; if you are anarchist you wouldn't want any form of state, be it an organized state as we do have normally, or mtgox's state.
A state is an entity with a monopoly on the use of force in a geographical area. It uses violence, or the threat thereof, in order to extract money from those living within its borders, in order to provide services that may be unwanted.

Mtgox can only take my money if I agree to exchange his services for my money.

As you can see, mtgox is nothing like a state.
1603  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The "Why We Trust Mt. Gox" thread on: March 02, 2011, 11:00:42 PM
Just so you know, many of us here are anarchists, and care not one whit whether or not any state considers mtgox to be a "legitimate" business. So while that may be a concern for you, don't assume that it is a concern for anybody else.

edit... In fact, my trust in mtgox would be lower if he became "legitimate", almost entirely because I do not trust any states to act in a way that is good for me and my money.
1604  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The "Why We Trust Mt. Gox" thread on: March 02, 2011, 10:44:47 PM
I've done business with mtgox three times now - twice using paxum, once via write transfer. I have been completely satisfied each time.

I trust him, but at the same time some clear terms would be nice.

Delete everything from %AppData%\Bitcoin except wallet.dat. Make a backup of everything first if you are worried. Then, run Bitcoin. If that doesn't fix the problem, reinstall.

Are we making fun of homeopathy? I'm selling some water molecules that passed through the bladder of Oliver Cromwell.
1607  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Instant-Payout Mining - BitPenny.com on: March 02, 2011, 08:50:31 PM
Yo
Hey!!  Not only did the payout decrease, but my balance was adjusted downwards.  That includes work I did at the higher payout rate.  This is theft!
You should probably provide some evidence for this allegation.
1608  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [Baron] is a scammer on: March 02, 2011, 06:36:00 PM
Is there a such thing as tainted bitcoins?  Since most of this happened on the Mtgox site itself it really does not answer the question.  What if I sold an item for bitcoin and then when i tried to cash it in I am told they were stolen 2 transactions ago?  I send out the item of value so I am out that item.  What happens then?  Are people going to be confiscating bitcoins based on the history?

There is no indication that this practice is happening, or will happen. Anyone could, on an individual basis, refuse to accept "tainted" Bitcoin, but I doubt their reputation would remain in good standing for long.

In 2 months not a single 5970 is enough to mine, u need atleast 2-3X 5970 to mine.
Oh FFS, rich gets more riches and us poor peoples are stuck because can't do constant upgrading :/

Don't listen to this guy. Either he was being sarcastic or he doesn't know what he's talking about. I doubt we'll see difficulty increase much faster than the 30% increments we've been seeing.
1610  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 02, 2011, 05:44:21 PM
First of all, it will not change the situation.
Second, I not sending my documents to everyone who requests, only to banks and other serious institutions.

And stop asking unconscious questions.

Supposedly, you deposited $45,000 USD to mtgox. Do you deposit that much money just anywhere, or only at "serious institutions"? Why did you trust mtgox with your money, but you won't trust him with a scan of your passport? If you want to show that you are serious about this, send it to him.
1611  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 02, 2011, 03:05:02 AM
Bitcoin-OTC doesn't have these issues because there's nobody to freeze your money. ; P

However, there's a higher probability (unless you exclusively trade with highly rated individuals) that you get scammed on an individual trade.
1612  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 02, 2011, 02:44:40 AM
Thats why I am going to go to court

Ok. Great. No need to continue posting then, right?

You don't see he is lying?! He saying that I hacked his website and put 45 000 USD to my account, I giving you proof that I was depositing using liberty reserve, why he run out now?

It makes absolutely no sense that mtgox, a member of this community in good standing, would risk his good reputation and his business on the theft of some money.
1613  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 02, 2011, 12:40:33 AM
I need contacts of mtgox.com owner.

Ah. The only contact information I'm comfortable sharing is the email address admin@mtgox.com. You said you have tried to contact him? How? I ask because when he last posted in this thread he said he was trying to contact you. I suggest you send an email to that email address with all of your contact information.

edit... For anyone curious about mtgox's rather infrequent contributions to this thread...

There is pretty strong evidence that this guy was involved in some theft of BTC. I'm trying to talk to him to make absolutely certain.
wow 16 pages!

Guys I really don't want to go into details about this until it is resolved. If baron is in fact a scammer the less he knows about what I know the better.
I'm still talking to baron and trying to get to the bottom of this.

BCEmporium: How can you say what you would do when you don't know what is really happening? If I allow him to trade and he is a scammer it is very easy to send the majority of his money to another account just by clearing out the order book and then trading with another account he makes.

And of course I have talked to the victim and am convinced his account was stolen from. I don't enjoy just blocking random people's accounts. I wouldn't do it unless there really was no other option.
Also I'm not holding his funds because I think he bought stolen BTC. I'm holding them because there is a chance he stole BTC.
Bimmerhead: I'm waiting for him. He isn't waiting for me. I've been trying to get him on the phone since this happened.
1614  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 02, 2011, 12:30:55 AM
To everyone: if someone was dealing with mtgox.com by sending/receiving from/to him bankwire , can you please write me private message of where/from you was receiving/sending money, I need contacts. I guarantee, I don't revel to anyone who you are.

I have sent mtgox a bank wire in the past. Why do you need this information?

Better change ur graphics card if u want to mine.
The investment u make is worth more than u can think.

Mind me asking what you're earning at the moment with your 6870? I am tempted to buy a better GPU. Hard to know if it's worth the investment if difficulty is going to keep climbing (unpredictably as well.)

The difficulty changes are not unpredictable. You can look at the estimate here or calculate it yourself. Every 2016 blocks, the network (all of the clients) recalculate the difficulty such that over the past 2016 blocks, using the new difficulty would result in around 10 blocks being found per minute.

(this is, I am sure, a vast simplification, but it should serve to get you close enough(TM))
1616  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (>70Ghash/s) on: March 01, 2011, 08:02:15 PM
slush, any idea when registrations will be reopened?

I decided to completely rewrite the pool core and avoid using standard bitcoin client. This is quite big project and I don't see it's finish yet. So no, I currently don't have an idea when the new pool will be up.

Dang, no wonder. Good luck with that, slush. Are you just writing your own GetWork, or are you creating your own transactions for payout as well? What would be kind of cool is if you created the generation transaction with multiple outputs, if that's possible. That way everybody gets newly minted coins. Smiley
1617  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: CreateTransaction: suggest/enforce fee for big low-priority transactions on: March 01, 2011, 06:54:00 PM
Oh...one other thing...I would think it should be fairly trivial in the client to come up with suggested fees for desired verification speeds based on the recent block statistics...I could imagine a selection list in the GUI like:

   Transaction fee (expected confirmation speed):
       0.00 btc (>4 hrs)
       0.01 btc (~1.5 hrs)
       0.05 btc (~30 min)
       1.00 btc (<15 min)

It wouldn't be expected confirmation speed, it would be expected block insertion speed.

Confirmations always happen every ~10 minutes, since they are blocks created after the transaction is inserted into a block.

I just bought Tom Wood's Rollback. I read the first couple of chapters so far and it is quite excellent.

I was sold after watching this video.
1619  Other / Archival / Re: Silk Road: anonymous marketplace. Feedback requested :) on: March 01, 2011, 05:43:49 PM
I really like the idea of the site!  What I'd like to see is a rating/reputation system of some sort, or just something that can make people feel safer that they aren't gonna get ripped off.  I'm not sure the best way to implement something like this.

I thought I saw discussion that something like this was going to be in place soon. Any word, SilkRoad?
1620  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: March 01, 2011, 05:42:19 PM
I'm thinking the same. If this matter will not be resolved soon, my trust in MTGOX will not stay intact i guess...

If MtGox is not able to contact Baron, why would your trust in MtGox be affected?
