1662  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: change electrum wallet password for all computers?? on: May 10, 2017, 10:04:42 AM
Hello,

This is my very first post on this forum so first of all, if im off on the wrong side of the forum just direct me! Also ive tried searching for this issue but with no luck. A classic Newbie Smiley

The question that i have is simple, i use whonix system and first off i was only logged into the bank on 1 computer. Later that one got away somehow (dont want to exploit why). But ofc i had my seed backed up with veracrypt on a usb.

So i can access the wallet with no issues and put a password to login on my "new" computer.

I later tested to use the seed on my mates computer and could then use a completely new password?

Meaning, wherever i use my seed i have to set a password, and it dosent have to be the same as on the 2d computer.

My Question is, how do i change so that the "Computer that got away" have a new password, can i only do this from that perticular computer?? There must be a way to set a default password for all computers

First of all electrum is not a bank.

Second knowledge of the seed allows anyone to restore your wallet. The password is not required if you have the seed. Since your seed has been exposed on potentially insecure systems you have to create a new wallet with a new seed, send all your bitcoins to a receiving address in this new wallet and stop using your old wallet.

You can create a new wallet using the file menu > new/restore option. In future be mindful of which wallet you have open at any time. The window title bar should contain the wallet name. Don't go receiving bitcoins at your old wallet.

Finally you may be wondering what the password is for. The password is for encrypting the wallet file on your PC so that if some malicious person or program should get access to that they can't spend your bitcoins without knowing the password to decrypt the wallet file. The wallet file contains the seed and related meta data. If you have the seed then you don't need access to the wallet file.
1663  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [Resolved] how can i check the Integrity and Authenticity of wallet install file on: May 08, 2017, 12:09:32 PM
maybe the method these different versions use to come up with the hash is different so they get a different pubkey but pointing to same thing. have to look deeper in PGP documentations for that

Hash collisions are possible which is why I've said above that you should use the full key fingerprint. If you use a truncated fingerprint (hash) then the chances of a collision are very real. With the full fingerprint there is no chance at all.

1664  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [Resolved] how can i check the Integrity and Authenticity of wallet install file on: May 08, 2017, 03:00:45 AM
you can download the key from the github repo too:

https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/master/pubkeys/ThomasV.asc

The full fingerprint is given below. It is not possible to substitute a fake key if you use the full fingerprint to fetch it using gpg:

0x6694D8DE7BE8EE5631BED9502BD5824B7F9470E6

I created a script that downloads, verifies and offers to install electrum for you:

1665  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: What does "transactions -> use change address" do? on: May 08, 2017, 12:18:54 AM
OP please read about change on the bitcoin wiki:

https://en.bitcoin.it/Change

Put simply transactions often have change that has to be sent back to your wallet. For privacy purposes it is better to use separate change addresses. You should leave this option checked. If you leave it unchecked change will be sent back to the address where the input coins came from.

What that page doesn't tell is how there is a conflict with change and network fees.. First think new users are going to do is try and combine change with other change for other transactions..

what conflict are you talking about?
1666  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Complete Newbie Question on safety of transaction number & stuff on: May 07, 2017, 07:10:27 AM
- Agent ID
- Transaction #
- Conflicting Transaction #
- Block #

There are no agent IDs or conflicting transaction #s in bitcoin.

Yeah you should install a wallet app on your phone or download software for your PC. Web wallets are not safe. Custodial wallets at exchanges are also not safe.

Bitpay wallet is actually an app that you install on your phone or PC. It's good so go for it.

Don't use brainwallets. They are not safe either.
1667  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Need assisstance with electrum 2.8.2 on: May 07, 2017, 07:02:39 AM
Could some one please tell me where to find all the extra receiving addresses in electrum 2.8.2?  I upgraded from 2.3.0, and there used to be a lot of receiving addresses.  Now there is only one and it looks like a send form.  Where are all the extras??? PLEASE help!

Click "save" on the receive tab and the "new" button will become enabled. Click new to get another address. Rinse and repeat.

You can also add a description before saving the address so that when you receive funds to that address the description will show up as the address label.

What part of

Either seed can be imported and work fine.

is confusing?

sorry but bringing in xpubs and stuff is confusing. also the guy you replied to had it wrong but you agreed with him. you can always restore a wallet with seed in electrum. the dev calls it the "electrum social contract"
1669  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can you help me to sign message in electrum with 2 factor authentication. on: May 06, 2017, 11:28:40 PM
Are there any plans to introduce this functionality in Electrum via the usual trustedcoin mechanism? I too would like to sign a message for a 3x two factor address  - it's actually required when changing my gribble bitcoin address on #bitcoin-otc  from my old bitcoin qt wallet to this new one.

See one post above:

You simply cant sign with multi sig (or any pay to script hash) address.

1671  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How can i add the address from bitcoinvanitygen to recent electrum wallet? on: May 06, 2017, 11:20:55 PM
As a side note, I wouldn't recommend using a website such as that to generate vanity addresses. You should use sites that support private key parts so that another party doesn't have your entire private key.

I'd recommend http://vanitypool.appspot.com/ instead for creating vanity addresses.
bitcoinvanitygen also provided secret or private key they are giving it to import it to other wallet..

Knowledge of the private key allows anyone to spend bitcoins sent to the corresponding address. Bitcoinvanitygen knows your private key and in future if they like they can spend bitcoins sent to it! You should not use this private key and address that you got from them!

What kolloh is talking about is a process through which you can get someone else to generate a vanity address for you without them knowing your private key. You generate the private key on your own computer and then give this third party the public key. They use that to generate a vanity address for you and provide you with a secret that when combined with your private key generates the correct private key for the vanity address. Since they never had your private key and only your public key your funds are not at risk.
1672  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Some questions about electrum wallet on: May 06, 2017, 11:06:57 PM
you can see the private key for each address by right clicking the address I think or choosing view privte keys from the menu

That won't work for 2fa wallets since they contain p2sh addresses and there are multiple private keys for those. Electrum only shows one.

BTW OP I was wrong in my earlier post about restoring 2fa wallets. I just did a test restore and you can actually choose to keep or disable 2fa in the restored wallet. So you have the choice.
1673  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Some questions about electrum wallet on: May 06, 2017, 11:02:32 PM
One question about the 2FA: in case I restore the wallet on a new computer, after the seed is it gonna ask also for the 2FA or not? I mean the very first time I restore the wallet.

When you restore a wallet using that seed it will cease to be a 2fa wallet. You won't need to enter any 2fa codes or have anything to do with trusted coin anymore.

Edit: I was wrong. You can actually choose to keep or disable 2fa at the time of wallet restoration.
1674  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum - Bitcoin client for the common users (friendly and instant) on: May 06, 2017, 10:56:35 PM
Only the old seed format will let you import non-seed-determined private keys to your wallet.
But this just in case I had downloaded Electrum some time ago, right? Because I downloaded it for the first time a week ago, so I created my wallet based on the last release.

Ignore what these other guys are saying. They are just confusing you. Read this:

1675  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum - Bitcoin client for the common users (friendly and instant) on: May 06, 2017, 10:54:04 PM
Not sure if this is correct thread for this question but here goes..
I'm trying to sweep private keys from a very old multi bit wallet into my just installed Electrum.
(I cant adjust fee in the old multi bit so coins are basically unsendable)
So i have dumped the keys from multibit.
I managed to get only one (out of about 20) to work. i swept it,broadcast, and funds showed up in electrum wallet.
All the rest of the keys i tried same process but gives me the message
"no inputs found, note inputs need to be confirmed".
one more thing... and the reason i'm doing this, i currently have a stuck transaction in my old multibit wallet that's unconfirmed
because of you guessed it...fee too low.
Im suspecting this maybe reason private keys wont sweep into Electrum? IDK as I'm not good at this technical stuff.
I never thought it would be so complicated . I just want to transfer coins from an old wallet to a new.
Any help would be appreciated. thanx and great wallet btw

To send money from one wallet to another you simply send to one of the receiving address of the target wallet. So go to the receive tab of your electrum wallet and grab the address it gives you there. Put that into multibit and send your bitcoins there. You don't have to muck about with private keys!
1676  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum - Bitcoin client for the common users (friendly and instant) on: May 06, 2017, 10:51:59 PM
Hi guys, I'd like to a have a clarification about Electrum: what do I exactly need to restore a wallet, besides the seed? Because some people say I only need the seed, other people say also a backup and the private key...  Huh

All you need is the seed but be careful as the format changed with Electrum 2.x

Don't scare him needlessly! There is nothing to be scared about. Electrum strives to maintain backward compatibility with all past seed formats so all he can simply backup the seed words and that is enough.
1677  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: restore of 12 word seed in Electrum 2.8.2 NOT POSSIBLE on: May 06, 2017, 03:24:11 AM
also make sure you are comparing the right word list.  the word list changed at some point , I think when electrum converted over to bip32 HD.

That was version 2.0 which was released in March 2015 which is well before the OP says he created his wallet.

1679  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: i send bitcoins but said me unconfirmed low fee on: May 04, 2017, 11:02:17 PM
... Also in the newer versions you can bump the fee for a transaction after it has already been sent Smiley
Only if the transaction is marked "replaceable"... which, I think by default, only occurs with what Electrum defines as "low fee" transactions... otherwise you have to go into the "tools -> "preferences" -> "fees" and select "Always" from the dropdown for "Propose Replace-By-Fee"...

Also, only the Sender can try and bump the fee... if you're receiving bitcoins and they're unconfirmed due to low fee, your only option is "Child Pays For Parent"...

Electrum supports two technologies for increasing fees for a transaction that has already been sent. RBF which does require that you mark the transaction as replaceable when you originally sent it. And Child pays for parent (CPFP) which only requires that you control one or more receiving addresses. The OP can use CPFP to bump the fee because it's very likely the transaction generates change and he controls the change address.
