1721  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin irony on: August 04, 2013, 01:16:01 AM
The ironic part in Bitcoin is that it's a completely artificial (albeit carefully planned) market that aims to create the ultimate free market, why haven't the devs put any effort into a bounty system to tap into bitcoins network hashing potential? Call it Bitcoin+ and let people put up bounties for unique addresses/darknet union URLs, cracking FBI/bank passwords etc.

Cracking bank passwords? Perfect, transform Bitcoin from an instrument of freedom to and instrument of theft.  Roll Eyes
1722  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DATA - Authority or Association? on: August 04, 2013, 01:14:30 AM
Awesome. What percentage of your clients use it?  Do you offer a discount as an incentive?  Curious to know as ill be implement bitcoin payment options soon on a few website I administer.

Well, I just reopened after having some issue and spending some time getting making sure everything was legal, so I've only had one sale, but it was paid for with Bitcoin.

I don't offer any discounts over cash because I charge the MAP (minimum allowed price) on all items, so charging less would cause problems.

Even if I never get another BTC sale, it's worth it, it took 5 minutes to set up BitPay so who cares?
1723  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DATA - Authority or Association? on: August 03, 2013, 12:32:57 PM
Accept bitcoin!

I do!  Wink TxT is the first (and I think only) paintball store to accept Bitcoin.

This should be in the Marketplace forum.

1726  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DATA - Authority or Association? on: August 02, 2013, 09:47:09 PM
SRO's are part and parcel of every industry. Think American Bar Association, American Board of Radiology, etc...most likely, these organizations (including DATA) will have only indirect influence in your life.

Most likely, but it is because of PCI's pain in the ass requirements that TxT Paintball does not accept credit cards.
1727  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitmessage Address Book on: August 02, 2013, 09:22:30 PM
ADDED ABOVE THIS POINT - For my reference
1728  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DATA - Authority or Association? on: August 02, 2013, 09:15:44 PM
I was not referring to you specifically but in this thread and others it seems the  M.O. is to shoot first then ask questions later.

It is always good in anything bitcoin related to have a healthy skepticism.

I too have concerns about any central "authority" self-regulated a decentralized peer-to-peer technolocy in a way that all stake-holders are represented fairly, so I am interested in individuals real and specific concerns that are not just "FUCK the FED" and "FUCK authority" (which you have to admit there is a lot of in these parts).

Exactly.
1729  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does BitSpend eliminate the need for converting merchants to Bitcoin? on: August 02, 2013, 09:14:02 PM
It's a shame that BitSpend has ceased trading which is why we have started our own alternative at - SpendWithBitcoin.com

Did you actually do anything to mitigate the problems that Bitspend ran in to? It would be a shame to be shut down for the same reason they were (not that they did anything wrong, but unfortunately it's on you to account for bankers' ignorance regarding Bitcoin).
1730  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DATA - Authority or Association? on: August 02, 2013, 06:23:45 PM
The D.A.T.A. founders chose not to use "Association" because they did not want to be seen as a "trade association", "Agency" was too formal and structured so they settled on "Authority" (with the Latin connotation not necessary the modern English connotation).

See finra.org.

Too many conspiracy theorists around here.  This is a group of concerned businesses who are trying to make a difference with respect to the onerous regulation here in the US and elsewhere where short-sited government regulations impede innovative technology as it relate to virtual currency and emerging payments.

Hope that helps.

I'm not sure if you were referring to me, but I am not a conspiracy theorist. I do have mixed feelings about DATA though, which is why I wrote this post.
1731  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Seeking a team to develop Bitcointalk 2.0 forums (apply within) on: August 02, 2013, 06:07:32 PM
Two things:

1. Definetly integrate with Bitmessage if possible.
2. Consider PHPBB as well (I have no idea how it compares but I've had good results in the past.
1732  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Civil War in America on: August 02, 2013, 05:55:09 PM
Oh please... can we talk about real societal and economic issues instead of conspiracy theories and garbage like this?

EDIT: I didn't watch any of these, I'm not going to waste my time.
1733  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bitcoin Welfare System on: August 02, 2013, 05:40:37 PM
Hey everyone,

I was pondering. What do you think a Bitcoin welfare system would look like? Bitcoiners are pigeonholed as anarchists and libertarians and thus against welfare

Hold on there,

I'm libertarian but I'm not against welfare. I think the current system in my country is broken but I'm not against a system where the state helps those who genuinely need assistance. That assistance though needs to come with a plan for those who are able to work to actually get what they need (education, job training, whatever) to start working.

Well said!
1734  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If encryption is outlawed wouldn't Bitcoin be too? on: August 02, 2013, 12:08:47 PM
Bitcoin doesn't use encryption.

Hashing is considered by some to be encryption; in fact it's sometimes referred to as one-way encryption. You are technically correct though.
1735  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: should I just get used to this? on: August 02, 2013, 01:52:59 AM
You most likely have either a password problem or a computer security problem.  The common thing between the three services is you.

hmmm... I have also lived in Italy, Spain, California, NYC and Argentina... all of whom have gone bankrupt AFTER I lived there!... Again the common thing between all these bankrupt states is ME.  my God!  I am the Grim Reaper of economies!!  I mean, this must be the case because, following your flawless reasoning, no one else you has had money in bitcoin exchanges has lost any money, and the polish government closing down the bitcoun-24, well, that would absolutely be my doing only if i really was the dark could of financial doom.... unless you can provide another reason as to hoe my being me caused the German and Polish officials to take down BTC-24.

Ok, well, let's see what new economic disaster I can bring about.

That's not a crazy as it sounds, sometimes someone just has "bad luck." I can't tell you how many times I have returned a brand new product because I received it broken. For example, my new computer had a broken trackpad, so I sent it in to get that fixed. Just the other day I realized that the same computer only has 4GB of RAM, even though it was supposed to have 8GB!
1736  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is Esperanto on: August 01, 2013, 10:16:29 PM
Bitcoin is more like the metric system. It will be adapted everywhere except the USA.

Well, I don't want to have a debate on the Metric system again, but Bitcoin is actually growing very quickly in the US. Almost everyone (read: who follows current events and cares about more than cat videos) here has at least heard of it, and a sizable amount of people are using it in one way or another. The benefits of Bitcoin over fiat far exceed the benefits of Metric over Standard.
1737  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is Esperanto on: August 01, 2013, 10:13:29 PM
The comparaison is valid on the surface of it, but I would argue that:

1. The problems with fiat payment systems as they exist are pretty serious, not just the kinds of problems idealists want to solve. There are billions of dollars spent each year on dealing with/mitigating these problems.
2. As hard as transitioning to bitcoins can be for the non tech-savvy (I suspect it'll get easier, btw), that pales in comparaison to learning a new language.
3. The main practical benefit of esperanto (a language everyone can understand), is already being achieved by everyone learning english as their second language. English may be inelegant, but it works.

English is inelegant? That depends, as with any language, on how it's used.
1738  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is Esperanto on: August 01, 2013, 10:12:07 PM
I have zero interest in Esperanto. It solved absolutely nothing and represents a sterling example of naivety, Bitcoin on the other hand actually solves serious problems.

It drives me crazy that people refer to Esperanto as culturally neutral. It's a Western European language based on western European grammar. English is far more culturally neutral because it is influenced by Latin, French, Germanic languages and so on. English absorbs any culture it comes in to contact with.

English is unparalleled for it's ability to adapt and describe complex technical concepts. There is a reason why English is the international language of aviation even though the French were the leaders in the field for many of it's early years.

Not only that, but English is spoken (by some estimates) by over 1 billion people, making it the worlds most spoken language. Why have the entire population switch to an inferior, underdeveloped and anything-but-culturally-neutral language when 1 billion people already speak English?

Just saying.  Wink
1739  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hypothetically speaking... on: August 01, 2013, 09:57:42 PM
What if it was possible to switch the entire bitcoin or even all cryptocoins power to some other use for a day? Like switching a train to a different set of tracks. Where would you choose to switch it too? What kind of damage could be done? In the wrong hands could it be the end of the world? Personally I would love to see a SETI day happen once a year or even a folding day movement to help find any cure for the thousands of diseases that need our help. Just a thought.

As far as SETI goes, hate to say it, but I don't care one bit, it sounds like a waste of power. Curing diseases is nice, but a better choice would be for miners, businesses and consumers to donate some of their revenue.

I would like to think SETI would be a good use of power but your probably right with it being more wasteful than helpful. If anything does exist It will probably be knocking on our door first. Actually pretty excited to see Curecoin come out which donates part of the hash power towards folding to help cure cancer if I am not mistaken. Just the idea of using all this power we are producing and sharing even just a percentage of it to something other than transactions is pretty wonderful to see. Although a piece of revenue would of course be the most helpful I would have a hard time imagining anyone in the bitcoin world to share their funds with anyone. Power maybe a little but funds highly doubt it..lol Thanks for entertaining this idea with me and thanks for the +1!! Yes may not of fully understood the mechanics to this thought but had good intentions and appreciate your comments..thanks!

My reasoning behind thinking SETI is a waste is as follows:

1) I believe we ARE alone in the universe.
2) If we aren't, aliens are very likely not any more intelligent than animals.
3) Even if I'm wrong we'd have difficulty communicating, and traveling for the foreseeable future.
4) There are real problems on earth to attend to.

By the way there are a lot of greedy people in this world, but also a lot of generous ones, even here. Look at the Bitcoin Charity Fund for an example.
