1741  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Massive amount of GPU returns at my local computer store... on: January 21, 2023, 05:10:33 AM
I remember the same situation back in the Apple product launch days. I think it was either the iPad 3rd gen or IPhone 5S or something which just didn’t have enough demand to cause shortages and scalpers bought a bunch to flip and when nobody wanted to buy they had to return.

Now I understand returning one or two but I saw a family return probably like 20 of these apple products. They were limited to something like 2x per customer and the entire family came to the Apple store and return it one by one. I felt bad because the other customers in the store were laughing at them. The employees took it all back and they got their refunds.

Now I guess these days are gone of people camping outside Apple stores to get the latest tech.
1742  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Best Antminers setting to low noise? on: January 21, 2023, 05:03:11 AM
I think Phil would be the best to answer this question. From what I remember he took a car muffler and used it to make his Antminer quiet.

I had a few old S3/S4/S5 and the only way you could make those quiet there was this pencil mod trick and what it basically did was increase resistance of a few resistors and undervolted the hash boards so you could under clock in your settings and it ran much cooler. No idea if it still works on the current gen of Antminer.
1743  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Anyone know why FTT price started to rise just now? on: January 19, 2023, 08:14:14 PM
Anyone know why FTT price started to rise just now?

I'm searching on google but not found any news, not even found on any Twitter from any person related to case of ftx.

I'm asking here to know about the reason. Thanks
I think it's because of two reasons one is that FTX US is still active so obviously some traction does comes from there. Secondly I have heard there were some rumours about the exchange restarting after the settlement of all the customers takes place and this time in an organized manner with no scams. Maybe this is why not only FTX all the coins in that eco system are getting slightly pumped up.

What are you talking about. FTX us is not active, it went offline at the same time as the intl exchange. Do you mean to say it’s solvent? Well that is not true either and was explained by John. Basically it’s not solvent because it had funds from Alameda which didn’t belong to FTX but instead LedgerX.  But the ledgerX was bought using Alameda funds which were customers not theirs.
1744  Economy / Exchanges / Re: FTX Exchange might be brought back online - Would you use it again? on: January 19, 2023, 07:58:12 PM
Here is the official news during the restart

https://www.reuters.com/technology/new-ftx-chief-says-bankrupt-crypto-exchange-could-restart-wsj-2023-01-19/

FTT is pumping over 30% as a result of the news. The fact that it’s coming from John it means there is a good chance of it actually happening.
1745  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Anyone know why FTT price started to rise just now? on: January 19, 2023, 04:43:02 AM
If you are following Alameda research wallets a few hours ago they were moving some FTT. And I was surprised that there wasn’t a huge drop of FTTUSD when the transaction took place. I am getting weird feelings about this market and would avoid.

Alameda can pump this coin to like $10 and then send their $1B or $2B worth to Binance and sell everything there. And many would be caught holding the bags. The tokens are having way too much activity lately.
1746  Economy / Economics / Re: MtGOX + FTX = GTX on: January 19, 2023, 04:39:11 AM
Yes it’s not a bad idea however the only way this is possible is if the liquidator allows GTX to be able to settle claims for certain creditors. Which they won’t allow.

Because right now I can say that I had $100,000,000 worth of assets on FTX and I’ll sell you my claim for 0.01%. And how will the purchaser be able to prove its valid and true? The website is down. If it was back up and they enabled that FTX Send option where you could send your FTX bucks to another FTX customer within the exchange then I can see it working. However that is clearly not the case here.
1747  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Massive amount of GPU returns at my local computer store... on: January 19, 2023, 04:32:26 AM
Strange, in my country you can't return any brand new GPU after making payment unless it's not working on the same day you purchased the GPU, once you open the box it's forever yours  Grin Grin.

I have abandoned GPU mining lol, I never knew I could until I see how better Bitcoin mining is doing right now compare to GPU mining.

I think long time ago it was like that here in Canada. But there was some buyers remorse law passed and you are allowed to pretty much return anything. Only things you can’t return are stuff from the dollar store and a car, but everything in between you can.

It’s a good policy but some people just take advantage. People used to return 10 year old TVs to Costco for a full refund and they had to change their policy on electronics.
1748  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Massive amount of GPU returns at my local computer store... on: January 18, 2023, 01:02:05 AM
Yes they were all Nvidia 4xxx pretty much. Most were unopened.
This store has a deal where you can buy an open box for a slight discount,
So they are losing out if someone returns a bunch of these GPUs and they were opened.

Someone even posted some Craigslist ad on Nvidia Reddit or some gamer forum and basically was “Selling Nvidia GPUs at MSRP” and everybody there said they wouldn’t buy because if there is stock, why buy from a scalper and worry about getting a defective unit and then having to deal with warranty issues
Without being the original owner or having the original receipt. And I agree with them.

I had a brand new r9 280x sapphire GPU during Litecoin mining days and it went up in flames and I couldn’t RMA because they required original receipt and I had to be original owner.
1749  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Anyone know why FTT price started to rise just now? on: January 17, 2023, 03:51:09 AM
Basically SOL started to pump and then we got the good news about finding all that hidden money along with a possibility of restarting the exchange so it started to pump along with SRM and FTT.

However the token has no utility anymore and will be useless. People are buying it because they think it will be used again for no maker fees but the chance of that is very low and somebody will be left holding the bag.
1750  Economy / Economics / Re: The Buy Now, Pay Later Bubble Is About to Burst on: January 17, 2023, 03:47:35 AM
Well credit cards have record balances for 2 reasons.

1) Most credit cards give you usually 1-2% cash back or some bonus so people use them when paying for things and Apple Pay makes it quick to pay for things.

2) Inflation is high so everything costs more so it’s normal that balances will be higher.

So I am not surprised by this at all.
1751  Economy / Economics / MtGOX + FTX = GTX on: January 16, 2023, 10:32:55 PM
You think we have seen it all but get this. 3AC is basically trying to generate funds to launch an exchange called GTX. So pretty much its like GOX + FTX = GTX combined. At first I assumed this was a joke but it was posted on WSJ

https://www.wsj.com/articles/founders-of-bankrupt-three-arrows-capital-plan-trading-platform-for-distressed-crypto-debt-11673889546

So they basically want to trade an exchange which trades creditor claims. So since many are owed MtGox, Celcious, FTX claims they can sell their claim for pennies on the dollar and get some money back NOW instead of waiting a few years. MtGox claims I think were something like 20% back in 2015. The more evidence of the company being solvent then obviously the higher the claim will be.

However....

Not only is this being run by 3AC, which we all know aren't the most honestly due to their collapse. Another reason is how can you sell these claims exactly?  DO you give your email+password+2fa and sell it like that? How does someone prove how much funds you had on FTX since the website is down. No idea how this is even possible.

Crypto getting weirder and weirder everyday.
1752  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Massive amount of GPU returns at my local computer store... on: January 16, 2023, 10:28:06 PM
Went to my local computer store for some parts. And right in front of the store they had a huge collection of returns and almost all of them were GPUs. Many were still sealed. They have a decent return policy and I am figuring out that these are mostly scalper returns.

Really surprised that they didn't just decline returns if someone is returning like 10x GPUs, which is clearly not for personal use but for scalping. Very surprised that people are still trying to scalp GPUs these days when ETH POS was months ago.
1753  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will Btc get to $12k or $10k on: January 16, 2023, 03:50:35 AM
It seems like this is similar to what happened exactly in 2018…2019. We broke support in Nov 2018 and we traded sideways until April and in April we had a 25% week just like last week.

So if history is any indication we bottomed at $15k. Will probably pump to some number like $30-40K and then head back down and trade sideways again for rest of year.
1754  Economy / Speculation / Re: What happen to Bitcoin price? "Over $5 Billion' in Assets Recovered (FTX)" on: January 16, 2023, 03:46:45 AM
Basically at this rate they will be solvent soon. Look at SOL, SRM and FTT all pumping.

When SOL was $10 I think they had $500M worth, it’s almost 3x now so that’s over $1.5B however most of it is locked. They got tons of SRM which is up like 500% and obviously FTT which almost touched $3. No idea why anyone would buy any of these coins.
1755  Economy / Economics / Re: U.S. Safety Agency Eyes Ban on Gas Stoves As Health Concerns Mount on: January 15, 2023, 05:51:19 AM
Most people don’t know this but if you are using a gas stove you need to have the vent turned on right above the stove. It needs to properly vent the gases. Most people don’t do this due to the Noise, due to them not knowing you should or the fan vent broke.

If they were used properly then it wouldn’t be an issue. It’s much quicker than an electric stove and also more efficient and cheaper to run. However I can see the dangers outweighing the benefits if not used correctly.
1756  Economy / Speculation / Re: What happen to Bitcoin price? "Over $5 Billion' in Assets Recovered (FTX)" on: January 15, 2023, 05:45:53 AM
Yes this was a few days ago. They recovered $5B  in liquid assets and they got almost another $5B in their business investments. Plus lately a lot of the SOL and SRM are rallying so they just might be actually solvent again.

Whether the customers will get their funds back is another question however. So far the guy handling the bankruptcy is working pretty hard at finding all the missing money. However could be years before the creditors get it back.
1757  Economy / Economics / Re: These Are the Top 10 Most Profitable Side Hustles in 2023 on: January 14, 2023, 10:08:50 PM
Honestly if you are looking for any side hustle you need to learn something online. Gone are the day when you would learn plumbering, building assistance or any other low jobs, the internet offers more than any one can ask for and you can be your own boss.

In my country we actually have low employment rate because the government has chosen not to create any employment avenue but through the internet many youth has been able to find something to do.

Online jobs are extremely difficult to get, especially the high paying ones. When a signature campaign opens up on Bitcointalk forum look how many people apply within a few hours of only 1 spot. Its usually 100 people, applying for 1  spot. Its very difficult to get high pay work.

You are competing against tons and tons of people because unlike an on the spot employment, people can have multiple online jobs at once, hence why its difficult. If there are any high paying online jobs which pay at least min wage of any modern country, let me know.
1758  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why would someone send 4 BTC to Satoshi (Genesis block) on: January 14, 2023, 07:57:29 PM
My guess is a crazy youtuber to get extra views. Maybe he can even recuperate the funds with the incremental views he gets  Smiley

Would be stupid but have seen worse  Smiley

I won't be surprised if this turns out to be true because most times when I'm surfing through YouTube to find solutions to some certain issue I do stumble upon some crazy shit that's been done just for the sake of getting millions of views.

And this might just be one of the examples of those crazy shit done by some crazy ass millionaire YouTuber and then they'll use caption like "How I lost my 4BTC to Satoshi" those shit's stupid as hell.

I don't think anyone would do this to get Youtube views. Do you know how little Youtube pays people right now. Why do you think so many people are doing sponsorships in youtube videos because the ad revenue is just not too high.

Last time I checked if you got a huge big channel and you get 1,000,000 views you maybe make $2000. So unless this guy got over 50,000,000 views he would only break-even. A few years back Youtube was more profitable but now its very difficult to make any money.  Seems like a waste of time these days. Way too saturated even for crypto content.
1759  Economy / Exchanges / Re: FTX Exchange might be brought back online - Would you use it again? on: January 14, 2023, 07:49:55 PM
does this mean that regardless of weather or not ftx comes back online customers will get the majority of their funds back?

No.

FTX US users will probably be reimbursed for a % fraction of their funds after several months/years, because (and ONLY because) they are FDIC-insured up to a certain amount of money for each customer.

Everyone else is screwed, including international customers and Alameda clients.

No this is not true. I am pretty sure Coinbase is the only exchange which has FDIC insurance but only for USD and not for crypto. However this is only if the bank holding the USD which is maybe Silvergate or some other bank goes insolvent, then they would pay out.

They won't pay out due to fraud or theft. And most people don't realise this. They will not pay out since these funds were pretty much stolen. FDIC is only if the bank holding the funds goes under like in 2008.
1760  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why would someone send 4 BTC to Satoshi (Genesis block) on: January 14, 2023, 05:50:34 AM
I don’t think it was a typo where the change and destination address was mixed up. If he meant to send something like $5 then there would only be 1 input and this transaction had 3 inputs.
Most wallets would just use 1 input to cover as much of the amount to spend.

Like others have said in this thread. It would of been better to just donate this money instead of waste it. Even if it removes circulation by a little it won’t make a difference in the long run. And having it sent there is pretty much a burn address.
