You might want to evaluate the contents of this thread before you do so.

Note, I have never used LR (though I did sign up, and considered it at one point), and have not followed the situation at all. That said, MadHatter appears to know what he's talking about, and I find his concerns very valid.
1762  Other / Off-topic / Re: Politics on: February 15, 2011, 05:04:02 AM
Another voluntaryist checking in, though not on your chart. I guess I would be a null value... I don't consider participating in politics to be worthwhile nor moral endeavor.

edit...

I think people who claim that experiment is a good thing are cessessionists.

This means that when a nation is divided on an important issue, they just cut the country in two parts and put each camp in each sides.

We did that for the communism/liberalism antagonism and it was a mistake to try unification.
I haven't stated this, but it is a point of view I hold (experimentation). What I mean by this though, is that once people have been convinced that the state is immoral, unnecessary, and destructive, I would not seek to impose any other structure on society. Some would, generally those that call themselves anarcho-*ists. From my experience, this especially applies to anarcho-socialists. Most seem to be willing to justify the initiation of the use of force to prevent private individuals from owning capital. Some anarcho-capitalists seem to be willing to do the same to prevent anarcho-socialism from taking root (though far fewer, in my experience). I however, would like to see the state fall, and would be happy seeing how society would rearrange itself in a voluntary manner. I believe that there is room on this planet for more than one type of society... whichever flourishes, flourishes.

Am I just unlucky, or is something screwy going on here?
You're almost certainly a victim of chance.

It seems like you took the option to change passwords away too.
How do I delete my account, or change my password?
Why not show the Hall of Fame anymore?  How can that screw anyone?
Seriously, what's your deal dude?
Why are you taking away all the features/information people want?
Every week something else is going away...
Next week we won't even have graphs or a stats page at this rate.
If you don't like it, take your processing power somewhere else. Slush isn't a state, if he doesn't meet his customers needs, they will leave or he will make adjustments.
1764  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: !! new bitcoin client !! on: February 15, 2011, 12:56:16 AM
I'm almost certain that backupwallet makes a cleartext backup of the current wallet. What makes it useful is that it can be called while Bitcoin is running and has the wallet open, without worry of corruption.

I'll be installing the Windows client tonight. Should I post in this or the other if I run into issues?

The Point
I think it is worth discussing how a company which must realize quarterly profits to justify its existence can sponsor basic research that won't provide marketable products for many years. This is ultimately why such work must be funded by some other entity, such as the public through taxes. It is an important question, and nobody here sees that this is the point I am trying to raise.

The only reason they must realize quarterly profits is because they are legally obligated to do so by the government.

Does this call Bitcoind or are you handling all of the back end stuff?
1768  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Tea store wanting to accept bit coins on: February 11, 2011, 06:23:21 AM
nmteaco,

I recommend looking into the MtGox merchant services. It seems pretty simple to use. What shopping cart software are you using? I'm a developer, familiar with ASP (unfortunately), it seems like it would be rather simple to modify the template to output a "pay with Bitcoin" link using the MtGox code. PM me if you're interested.

What types of technologies are used for the site?

I've been kind of interested in this for a while, I didn't realize the price had come down. I'll take one of these. I'd like to use the ClearCoin escrow service, is that alright?
1771  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (>20Ghash/s, join us!) on: February 10, 2011, 04:55:16 AM
I believe that just means you have earned a share. Congratulations!
1772  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Wanted: How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World on: February 10, 2011, 04:20:03 AM
That's absolutely fantastic. Perhaps by the time it is printing again, a copy could be purchased with Bitcoin. Wink
1773  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Instant-Payout Mining - BitPenny.com on: February 10, 2011, 03:13:34 AM
Also, be sure to put in a receiving address, I lost about 27 coins (1 day's mining) to a sending address xD
Oh, like a recipient in your address book? Did you just donate 27 bitcoin to someone? Smiley

If I could use Steam and Netflix instant watching, I would switch back to Linux in a heartbeat.
1775  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Sppliting/merging wallets on: February 09, 2011, 08:42:02 PM
Really? I was under the impression that the transactions were in the block chain, and as long as you had the keys to those transactions you could claim them.
1776  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Instant-Payout Mining - BitPenny.com on: February 09, 2011, 05:22:22 PM
Sorry, I meant I get 620,000khash/s on my 5970.

I'm considering pooled mining since I have to constantly reboot my machine and don't like the "luck" aspect.

Can anyone tell me if it's be more profitous for me to use Slush', or this mining pool, given the "heavy hitter" mining I'm doing?

I'm fairly certain you will get more money from Slush's pool or mining on your own. Here are the benefits of each method, as I see them.

Solo mining
Pros
Simplest method. Complete transparency, fewer possible technical issues. You keep all the money.
Cons
Lots of variability, completely dependent on luck. For CPUs, it's not really worthwhile. Must wait for 100(?) blocks before your generated coin is available.

Slush-like pool
Pros
Less variability, since you only have to find a solution with a difficulty of 1 in order to get a share. Smaller, but more frequent payouts. Should work out to be roughly the same payout over time as solo mining.
Cons
Not as transparent, there a risk that the pool operator is not honest. Other miners gaming the pool could also negatively impact your reward. Must wait for 100(?) blocks before the generated coin is available. More possibility for technical issues.

BitPenny-like pool
Pros
Extremely low variability, since you are getting paid a fixed amount per share, and shares are relatively easy to find. Immediate payout. Transparency is not (I don't think) an issue since you know up front how much per share you should receive, and can keep track of your shares.
Cons
Payouts will by design be lower over time compared to other mining methods. The same possibility for technical issues as other pools.
1777  Economy / Invites & Accounts / Re: Steam Account 70 games worth $1455.31 USD for sale on: February 09, 2011, 05:07:30 PM
Just FYI, don't expect to get anywhere near the face value of those games, for a few reasons.

1) I assume many of them were purchased on sale, and even if not, they often can be.
2) There is the risk that it's not your account, or you later decide that you want it back and take action to do so.
3) It's not very likely that someone is interested in all of those games, yet they can only buy them as a package.

If I were seriously interested, I'd probably offer you a few hundred dollars in Bitcoin for the collection. Alas, I am not, and mine is bigger (though not as valuable) Wink
1778  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Wanted: How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World on: February 09, 2011, 04:59:45 PM
I think a more rational theory is that there is not enough interest in that particular book, or at least not enough perceived interest, in order to warrant the copyright holder to reprint it.
1779  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin May Be Doomed on: February 09, 2011, 04:41:29 PM
Innefficiency is only a problem if you're in a competition.  If there's only one government, it won't matter.

The government does have to compete with the black market though. Agorism is the idea that the black market will eventually grow to the point that it can compete with the government for security and other services.
