181  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can keyloggers store your wallet password if you use on-screen keyboard? on: July 18, 2016, 02:10:20 AM
A few keyloggers have a system to take screenshots when you are using on-screen keyboard(or those sites where they give you a little numpad and you have to click the numbers)
just be careful, keep your system clean and if possible use linux (vm can help with that)

Thank you for the reply. I've got Malwarebytes, BitDefender, Trojan Killer, AntiLogger and a few more apps I'm scanning my system daily with but you never know when you can get a new keylogger/virus that will steal all your funds... Cheesy

Theres no need for that many anti viruses, just be careful how you use your computer and what websites are you visiting. I use malwarebytes and SUPERantiSpyware and I'm perfectly satisfied with those two.

That is a good general common practice but there is no guarantee that it will prevent a virus based on websites you visit.   You could have a old router firmware and some "bad guy" finds it decides to explore it and possibly accesses devices connected to network. Also anyone out there with default router password should change it.  A good antivirus and malware program should stop it but with something new it is not a guarantee.   All depends on how persistent/skilled the "bad guy" is.

New exploits sadly come out from time to time.  And there is lag between when found and released to when patched.  I strongly recommend for offline storage of BTC, and hot wallet's only keeping spending money in.
182  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: best miner for Ubuntu Mate on: July 18, 2016, 02:02:46 AM
Which is the best miner to use with an orange pi and Ubuntu Mate? I've been mining for a while and I'm looking forward to use my orange pi pc... BFGminer? CGMiner??

A RPI is really not a miner by itself.  Sure you could CPU mine on it.... but you will not be CPU mining BTC.   And really all CPU mining is pretty much dead, so RPI's cpu just is not going to cut it really.

It works good for a controller for a miner connected to it for example compacs, Avalon 4.1/Avalon 6, etc.  So can be a controller for a miner.... but not really going to be a miner by itself.
183  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S7 power problem on: July 18, 2016, 01:50:46 AM
It is unusual that water would cause problems to the electronic equipment (it usually doesn't)!

Look to replace the part of the S7 that you feel had the most damage from the water (if the BB boards are enclosed in the unit, then it was probably the control computer)!

Unless this was a liquid cooler then I'd ask why you had it close to the electronic equipment anyway?

(also, if you have another S7 then test out the BB board and control computer on them to see if they work or not)!

Yep, the bb board was enclosed in the unit, ill follow you advise, and will test the io board and the bb board, i tested the whole system (bb board and the io board), ill do that right away

What do you suggest about the power supply? It doesnt start

It is honestly hard to say as water was introduced to the miner and PSU it sounds like from above store.  Even condensation could be bad overtime, really bad and will kill miners.

Just to have water go through your S7 and PSU's it's hard to say what all is wrong.   Electricity and water never mix, so adding a S7 in the mix is horrible on the unit.   It would not surprise me if it is something you have to send in to see if they can be fixed.  And with the water I'm not sure I would be to positive they  might be gone.

Only thing for sure we can tell you is from now on NEVER mine where water can be an issue.
184  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Requirements for a small custom farm on: July 18, 2016, 01:18:33 AM
Everything depends on cooling, power costs, backup, and area available. Your area should be neat, as to make cooling as effective as possible. You'll want cheap electricity in a cooler place, so you won't use as much power on cooling, but still need especially cheap electricity. Cool and cheap is a huge factor, which is why many farms are located in Washington state in the US. You'll want extended backup to keep things going in case of power going out; it takes time to shut miners down safely. There's many more factors like cost of miners and what model, but assuming it's an S9 farm with 5-cent electricity or less, in an ideal enviroment, it should work.

While I agree with 80% of what is said, I think any focus on backup is largely wasted money. There is very little risk to a miner from an unplanned shutdown. Yes, mining time is lost when the lights go out, but that's it. If you have unstable power with frequent outages, then you have a different problem, that backup is unlikely to solve.

Mining is does not need a Data Center environment. Extensive backup and redundancy in power isn't free, and is unlikely to pay for itself.

I am basing this on the general reliability of of the USA electrical grid. Your environment may be different.

he can backup the router, it is all I back up.  it is cheaper. run just the router and the switch

I also keep a backup PDU around.   One day for some reason a PDU I was using started acting up... and I did not have a extra then.  It scared me enough thinking of downtime from a PDU I bought a decent deal on ebay.

I had to run a decently long network cable to get to my mining area so also have a few big ethernet cable's.  As they are so expensive locally vs buying online.  So kinda have a stockpile of random part's/pieces that local prices are crazy on.   It is amazing going to local bestbuy or similar store and comparing prices to some of the online stores.
185  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: With the halving now official, how much hash power are you turning off? on: July 18, 2016, 01:13:54 AM
I think almost few miners are turnoff there low end miner s5 s7 those miners right no longer profitable if you have electricity cost..
But if you have free electricity cost you can still make a profit.

I don't see S5's and espically S7's being turned off.  They will be sold to cheaper electricity users or "free electricity" users.  I recently did this with my last S7 so it really was only offline for the few day's of shipping.  I think you will find that to be pretty common.

Not sure what miner's will actually come offline.   I would love to see some older gear come offline though, but a lot of the bigger places I think will upgrade miners if they do turn off older gear.  This is due to them already investing in info-structure for mining, so they really have a lot of cost's that are already paid.

What is the term Continous: -0.3 % mean?    Is that what phil gets when he does real time?

On http://nextdifficulty.com/ hover your mouse above it and it gives a description but:
"Conservative estimate suggests the hashrate won't change from now"
"Continous estimate suggests hashrate keeps growing at recent pace"

But going to hashrate it looks really great if this continues.  I am always happy with a negative.   Coinbase made it to 680 so that also is good.
187  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Antminer s7 setup question on: July 18, 2016, 01:04:04 AM
Hello.

Just wondering about installation the antminer s7 with 4.73 Th/s

Im about to buy one from

Is it enough?
And while you're mining could you get small peaces of bitcoins Or you have to get a full on

And all forms say that you need a power supply

Is it necessary to get one or i just can use a converter 220v to 12v

Just for your information i dont pay for the electricity

I live in an industrial are which electricity is for free

Where did you buy your AntMiner S7??? can you provide me some links.
I'm planning to buy.

thanks!!

You should probably look into local markets to save money on shipping and import taxes.
This is usually what makes or breaks a deal.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=75.0 is a good place to start.

A lot of times forum here is cheapest on used gear.   It tends to be a hard audience to sell to if not priced very fair to cheap.   I personally not long ago sold a S7 on ebay.    The buyer got a decent deal, it was cheaper buying a new one.   I do only sell to US though on ebay as it prevents dealing with custom's and keeps shipping reasonable.  Depending on how new shipping is not horrible was my last S7 i sold and shipping was as fair as I could make it.

Something like import tax/vat can be a big deal in Europe or other areas.    So getting local markets as mentioned can save you a lot.  But a lot of these places miners are higher then I would pay.  Might think of hosting and shipping to an area without vat/taxes.  All depends on how high it is.
188  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Personal Mining on: July 18, 2016, 12:57:44 AM
Hi, yes of course you can mine bitcoin in home, but it will be useless if you pay much in electricity and it's also very noisy. For mining, you need bitcoin miner such as antminer or graphics card (with graphics card you can mine also altcoins) and internet access.

Also try to use google.

One link which I found: https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/9505-how-to-solo-mine/

Before you start mining make sure to check the the calculator:
http://www.coinwarz.com/calculators/bitcoin-mining-calculator

Suppose you got a very rate, then it may still not be profitable, since the difficulty is going up and your income is getting less.
My advice to you is to invest that money in bitcoin rather then mining gear.

BIG mistakke using coinwarz when deciding if you should invest.  It does not take into account difficulty changes.  So great for this period but horrible over time, will make investment look much better then it really is as no difficulty change which is unrealistic.

I like bitwisdom personally it allows you to configure it on so many factors.  Making it much better for long term ROI, just make sure to change block reward as I don't think they have yet after halving.
189  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Reasons Mining Will NEVER Be Profitable on: July 18, 2016, 12:55:34 AM
I'll say what I'm going to say right here: Mining is like gambling since there are so many factors that can lead to negative roi or doubling your money. You have nearly no control over the price of BTC nor the difficulty. What I said usually does not apply for people with very cheap electricity, although there are circumstances where it also applies. Everyone has different opinions, but really, if a miner was priced too high by a manufacturer, nobody will get roi above, say, 5 cents. This makes mining impossible for most.  If difficulty goes up 10% more than expected, a miner will be thrown off the expected track quite a bit. What if price falls? What if? There are so many variables in mining that you have to accept this is a very risky proposition, and you might as well be gambling with around 70-30 odds for most people.

Remember what I said about electricity? Cheap electricity almost always means ROI, but it also depends on cooling costs. A tropical region with 3 cent electricity will often incur more electrical costs than a cool region with 5 cent electricity, as more electricity will be needed for cooling. Mining is an uncertainty most of the time for people with above 5-cent electrical costs.

It is a high risk/high reward type of investment.  You have to remember this as some of the mining profit's I've gotten over the years I NEVER could have gotten in a save traditional investment.  If you want safe there are other things like savings accounts that don't pay hardly anything but have FDIC insurance (if in us).   And there are bonds you can buy a AAA bond and have a pretty safe investment that has been graded by a legit firm.

We are all still really early adopter's so there is a chance of decent returns.  But yes you can lose to.    I don't see what has changed in mining it's always been high risk, but for some it will pay off.   And the post above mentions a machine for higher electricity, there is also Ether on GPU's.  So there are still chances for some, not all but a lot.

continued from old topic : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1540287

The alt accounts in that topic above are clearly just expressing all their views in different posts https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1552177.0  only to get paid. how is this not spamming?
Is it fine for me to create 50 accounts and make 50 posts on each thread just with different thoughts?
Don't lock the topics from the next time if you really want people to bother posting in your threads.

Locking it is kinda a way to make sure thread dies, as once locked most consider it to be fixed and issue is no longer there.   I think you have some good circumstantial evidence but there is not the evidence that make's it guaranteed all one person.   You really need something like proving all the coin's from multiple accounts go to same place, just concrete evidence.

That being said Staff can see a lot more then us.  They can tell if same/different IP.  We really don't know if they looked at it or are looking at it as you locked thread.  As of now I would consider a good chance some alt's there... but no hard proof which is what we need.

That being said 50 is extreme, but you can have multiple account's as long as you are doing nothing wrong.  Gaming giveaway's would be something wrong if you can prove it.  But having multiple account's is not against.  I find it nice just to have 1 to do my post's with but there are valid reason's for alt's (no not 50)
191  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What Bitcoin wallets are best to use? on: July 17, 2016, 07:12:11 AM
I'll suggest blockchain.info because of its security and user friendly interface. Add on 2fa verification for more security of your funds specially in big amounts. I didn't encounter any problems on blockchain. So I'll recommend it to those newbie or starters in Bitcoin world.

There are some good 2fa option's aswell.   Cell phones scare me some as social engineering can happen and numbers get transferred to "bad guys".  In past month or so been a few big youtube people who have been hit by this.  So we are not big target's like them... but still can happen.

One I like is Yubikey which I did a hand's on with for blockchain.info https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1353231.0 .   It is a physical token that you have to press a button on.  So you have have access to the usb stick, and also physically press the button it can not be activated via software.  Which makes it where it can't be pressed remote which is good.

So yes 2fa is great idea.  But still a hot wallet so don't store a ton of coins there.

Enough Kitchen talk.  I think hashrate is dropping more Grin

https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty

Estimated Next Difficulty:   212,937,225,292 (-0.22%)
Adjust time:   After 274 Blocks, About 1.9 days

It was even lower by a little bit a day ago.  I will not complain as it is nice to see a negative I thought positive for sure, but will be happy to be wrong in this case.  The BTC value also not to bad... I'm finding it hard to complain Smiley.

At coinbase were sitting around high 690's, almost at 670.  It did dip for a bit but only around 7 dollar's so really again not much bad there could be much worse.  I went into halving with a lot of expectations and it's really been mild ... I should have been more optimistic as after halving has not been terrible.
193  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Reasons Mining Will NEVER Be Profitable on: July 17, 2016, 06:55:04 AM
i think the opposite it's true, mining will be always profitable, but only for a certain group of people/big farm, that will in the end control the network

Exactly it all comes down to cost.  In most cases electricity price makes or breaks you.   I will say mining has treated me well over the past few years... so to say it will never be profitable is false.   Maybe say "Never be profitable to some" then it could be true.  But some out there are still mining profitable.

Heck I even invested a little in GPU's to mine ether as it was a fun project to do again a chance to mess with GPU mining.   And it can be done at pretty  "normal" for lack of better term electricity rates.    And you can sell GPU's down the road.
194  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Queries on S7 miner hardware on: July 17, 2016, 06:49:12 AM
You can't compare S3/S3+ with the S5, S7 & S9. My S5 went up in flames after less than 5 months in operation. My S3 and S3+ are still in operation, they are built like tanks, not so with the S5, S7 & S9 which are based on string design, very weak design based on cost cutting measures not built for long term operation.

I have not had any trouble with any of them is why I compare.  If you treat the miner good cleaning, proper power, etc.  I still think S7/S9 will have a long life as a lot of S7's already have been hashing quite a while.   S5 not a bad miner, and S5+ i loved as a miner it was honestly a great miner I was sad when I sold it due to my electricity cost.

But look at number of S7's out there still running there are a lot.   So there are a few bad stories... but small number compared to total sold I would guess.  Only one I ever had trouble with was a C1... and they were kinda a different best.  It was really the water cooling company that was hard to work with not bitmain at least in my case.
195  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: July 17, 2016, 06:44:39 AM
Right, but

blocks of 12.95  since kano.is is paying about that each block

which is clearly visible in the screenshot. Anyone actually paying attention to the values they're putting into the calculator should notice the block payout set it to accurate.

- though I wonder if bitcoinwisdom is going to update the default settings anytime soon; perhaps they should be reminded?

I will email them

Does Bitcoinwisdom still use the old block reward for litecoin? I remember up until a couple months ago, they were still set at the old higher litecoin block reward size. They've never bothered to update the litecoin block reward.

I'm just pointing this out because they haven't bothered to update the bitcoin block reward size from 25 to 12.5.

Are they just lazy, don't care, or stupid?

I'm guessing not a top priority since you can change it your self on "Block Reward".   I would hope they are working on it and surprised it has not made it out there yet.  Still one of my favorite calculator's just have to make sure to change block reward manually right now.

I would hope no one actually uses it and does not manually update it.  As that would be quite a problem when calculating ROI.   But were kinda getting offtrack of S9, although this thread has a LOT of that it seems.
196  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: July 17, 2016, 06:39:42 AM
sounds good! I am trying to cut the DB's(NOISE) down so trying different things.
Corsair fan is super quiet. I don't get why they went with these super loud 4400rpm fans when the S1/S3's 3800rpm fans move enough air.

Put 2 s3 fans onto an s7 and watch how quick it overheats....

I'm don't think S3's and S7's are even in the same ballpark.  If your looking at a fan that was mentioned great for S3..... chances are it is not enough for S7.  Specifically for those of us in summer.  I did have one of the S7-F1 variants which had 1 larger fan it actually worked with out issue, but was a higher RPM fan.

So I think you  are going to be stuck with higher RPM fan's unless you underclock it.   And I would monitor the heck out of it if your messing with fan's.    They really were not made to be quiet miner's.  There are some good mod's people have done on forum to quiet them some though.  Going to S3 level fan... I don't think is one I would do.

still missing 2 weeks

I got 1 week payment.  What I don't know is if new rate took effect and it was possibly included the bonus.  So as of now paid or possibly paid:
1) 7/4 - Just paid
2) Coins_Bank Bonus mentioned - Possibly paid

Unpaid so far is one week but once we hit tomorrow I believe we will be back to 2 weeks again.  So it's going to take a 2 payment's or 1 big paymment, meaning more then 1 week payment put in hot wallet.
1) 7/11 - Unpaid

And I am just guessing on some of it I'm sure Marco can clear it up much more then my guessing.  And bot reset which is nice to see. So thanks Marco! Hopefully we get caught up that would be nice.
198  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What Bitcoin wallets are best to use? on: July 16, 2016, 05:35:23 AM
The day I entered into bitcoin I am using only blockchain.info wallets as I felt that its security features are too good and not easy for anyone to steal your coins.

Blockchain.info is one the most used bitcoin wallet and at times it is best to use the one that most people use because it means they are well trusted. Smiley

It should be noted that it should be treated like a hot wallet, you don't want to keep all your BTC in a service like this.  Although I will agree they are one of the most popular wallets, and have a good history.  But one bad event could change that.  I think you would be much better off with hardware wallet/paper wallet/etc if storing a decent amount.

The only online wallet that is a little different I can think of is Coinbase.  They hold a insurance policy ( https://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/articles/1662379-how-is-coinbase-insured- ).   Most online hot wallets do not have this, still would be careful storing large quantity of coins.
199  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Personal Mining on: July 16, 2016, 05:23:06 AM
He doesn't need to buy the S7-LN only to buy the S9 later, he can start learning with the S9. I would advice you to join a mining pool at first, hang out with other miners, learn the tricks and know the best way to make profit. When you are ready, then you can mine solo.

Honestly you don't need to sign up for a pool much in advance.  At this point pool's for the most part are very simple to setup and use.   Some pool's do have loyal userbases they actually tend to talk here on this forum, not really much to do on pool page but monitor after miner is setup.   And miners at this point have GUI's that are great. S7/S9 both very simple GUI's to learn/use.

Before buying any miner he should do ROI math.   I don't think there is really trick's in mining that i can think of.  I know this is overly simple but keep cost low... and profits higher then cost's.   At some point you might sell a miner depending on your electricity price, but again no trick to this.
200  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Requirements for a small custom farm on: July 16, 2016, 05:17:46 AM
Can a mining farm still break even with S7s nowadays? Electricity cost and increased mining difficulty has made it a very daunting task to accomplish.

9 cent power  no

5 cent power maybe

3 cent power yes
3 cent power, the only places I can think of are in the middle east or certain areas in Africa, definitely other cost come in at that point.

And one thing important is that it is a good power source.  You don't want to deal with brownout's or variation in voltage.   There are some places that are cheap on electricity but power just is not reliable.   You want cheap and reliable it is a must as large scale any kind of backup of power is pricey.

There are also some that political would keep me out personally.  I  have read of some countries with very very cheap electricity but putting a big investment there would be something most would question. I don't a example of countries like this, as some take it very personal when it comes to countries.
