181  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Strange things with bitcoin.com pool (pool.bitcoin.com). on: March 22, 2017, 09:52:30 PM

Blockchain.info... I think there's a timezone difference, but doesn't explain the discrepancy in the pool info, also the time difference is larger than usual. Something's wrong. And the pool stats don't match anything, it's like it's just made up.
                                                   POOL STATS
#458349 - 2017-03-22 04:12:23-|  22 Mar 2017 00:22:27

#458103 - 2017-03-20 11:18:42-|  20 Mar 2017 07:19:26
#458102 - 2017-03-20 11:18:28*Not one of the "pairs". It was the above pair, but 14 seconds between blocks is also quite strange. It wasn't mined by bitcoin.com pool, but still, that's the shortest block gap I've ever personally seen.

There's always been something off to me about that pool. At the least they're cooking stats to attract more miners. But I feel like something bigger is afoot.
Probably, but I've never mined there or had a desire to. Though I understand the appeal of their 110% PPS, it's just not sustainable for the long term.
182  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Pantech SX6 8.5 Th/s miner on: March 22, 2017, 09:34:40 PM
85000py6 is nearly 1500usd without shipping and customs fees. Even though it uses bitfury chips I'd pass on this one; I'd rather just buy an Avalon or Antminer at this cost.
I agree. But their price for an s9 is 138,000 ₽, which is quite a bit higher than the Bitmain price. So hopefully pantech will start selling them directly to miners, or at least a site like eastshore.xyz that doesn't have as much of mark up. I still would love to check one out.
183  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Pantech SX6 8.5 Th/s miner on: March 22, 2017, 08:58:54 PM
I did pick up 5 of the Ebit E9's though. They seem to be hashing smoothly at about 6.4th/s each on Kano.is

I have them hosted at Oregon Mines. I'll post more about them in the E9 thread, after I have had them for a couple of weeks.
184  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Pantech SX6 8.5 Th/s miner on: March 22, 2017, 08:33:41 PM
Thanks for sharing this! Nice to see another miner enter the market. But at the 85,000 ₽ price, I would have to pass.

I tried searching pantech's website and alibaba.com for this miner, but couldn't find one.

186  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Strange things with bitcoin.com pool (pool.bitcoin.com). on: March 22, 2017, 06:51:21 PM
So I posted this same question on the bitcoin.com forums, but have yet to get a reply. Thought maybe someone here could shed some light...

`On the "Blocks" page, I notice 4 recent blocks that appear to have been found in pairs (i.e. the latter block has the exact same timestamp as the previous block.) The second block in the pair shows exactly 100.0% difficulty for both instances. The two blocks found at 20 Mar 2017 07:19:26 have consecutive heights. The blocks found at 22 Mar 2017 00:22:27 (most recent blocks found as I write this,) have heights which are 21 blocks apart, which would be impossible unless mining was occurring on two separate block-chains simultaneously, or mining was occurring on one and PoW was being submitted to the second as well. Is this the case? I'm trying to wrap my head around what's going on. Can you please fully explain this anomaly? Also can you please re-clarify exactly how the mining structure of this pool differs from a "standard" pool?'

For those that don't know, this is Roger Ver's personal pool and a co-venture with John McAfee.

It pays 110% of the block reward with no fees. They keep the TX fee, but doing the math, the pool barely breaks even. I asked and had confirmed on the official thread that the purpose of the pool was in fact not a money making venture, but instead to use the computing power culminated in the pool to help Ver influence the blockchain towards BU.

But anyway, they recently mined 2 "pairs" of blocks. The timestamps they show are close but don't exactly match the official time on the blockchain explorers I've checked. On their "found blocks" page it shows 2 sets of blocks with the same time stamps, as if the pool found 2 blocks at once. It seems impossible.

For reference to anyone without an account on the pool to see for yourself, the blocks are 458103 & 458104 (pair 1) and 458328 & 458349.

Something seems fishy. I don't know for sure. Maybe someone who knows more may be able to clarify. Thanks.
Blocktrail.com has them at different times.

187  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Slushpool vs Kano Pool? :-\ on: March 20, 2017, 03:52:59 AM
I have about 20 Th/s to throw somewhere and was wondering where to put it... I see Kano pool to be at 27 ph and slush about 214 ph, is there a difference between finding a block every 1-3 hours as opposed to once every 18-48 hours? Thanks for the input.
I used to mine at Slush until the problems he had with genesis mining last year. It costs all of us mining a lot of BTC over a 3 month period. Even after multiple warnings and questions from miners that something was wrong.

I switched to Kano.is pool last year in Feb and have been very happy. The front end web interface isn't as flashy, but once you learn it, there is far more information and transparency than Slush. And Kano responds quickly to questions, unlike Slush.

By usernamehere! 13TH. Welcome to the acclaim board.

Longtime lurker, first time poster! I logged into my miner today to check on it, and saw that it found my first block! I couldn't believe it since I'm just a small hobby miner, so came here and to kano.is to verify.  Grin Grin

I hope it's not my last.

Nice Share! Congrats!

I'm still waiting to join the club!

.... But, you ignored the rest of what I said.
Since they are going to sell to us, they should at least make they attempt to give us some of what we want.

Fortunately there are other options, though not as efficient.
If they want to sell to us PITA small miners, they need to address our concerns too. Which would include the ability to adjust the miner to suit our wants/needs.

Yes, I did ignore it because it's wrong. The "PITA small miners" (your words) are a small enough market to not justify the software costs of running multiple versions of code. Any profits from "PITA small miners" become eaten up in the long run by the dev costs to do so.
I know they are my words. I was having fun with it. I don't take this stuff that seriously. And a lot of times we are a PITA. But in the end, we can all debate this until we are blue in the face, but Bitmain will do what they perceive to be in their best interest.

As I said:
Quote
If you do not want to use that enterprise product in an enterprise environment, then it's on you to create a "solution" for your non-enterprise environment, not the enterprise product manufacture.

P.S. The market is such they don't have to appeal to what you want, because they already have the product you want/need.
I still disagree with your point.

I think there are enough small miners out there that it does make a difference to Bitmain. If not, they wouldn't continue to sell to us. Take a look at just about any pool, the split between large and small miners.
Kano has about 5-6 miners over 1ph in gear with about 13ph out of his total 26
Slush has about 30 miners over 1ph with about 130ph out his 210
That's just a couple of pools, but I would be willing to bet it holds just as true on Antpool or F2Pool.

That's still a lot of gear going to smaller miners.

Well, at least you got that part right.  Grin

...Obviously they want the all the coin they can get...
Unlike other businesses that form to make as little money as they can?  Huh
I'm not saying they shouldn't be in it to make as much as they can. The end user market can make a huge difference to the bottom line of any company if their product catches on. But, you ignored the rest of what I said.

I was also thinking about the the 5Nd thing, whether this really is just a statistical smoothing function (moving average) or wether it gives "old" miners a 5Nd (currently about 100h, but possibly not constant(Huh)) lead over new miners due to network difficulty changes every 14 days? Are new miners disadvantaged by this in that when their hashes are paid out the 5th time they are worth less (if a diff change has since occurred)? Maybe this has been considered before, but some explanation would be nice.

Anyone willing to chime in on whether newbies starting out are disadvantaged compared to someone who has already "filled" the 5Nd window or not due to upcoming diff increases? Thanks.
I think any perceived disadvantage of 5Nd is minimal. Right now the 5Nd is ~106 hours. It changes with hashrate +/- and difficulty. I don't think the current time span is all that much, unless difficulty is making a huge jump (>10%).

We all went through it.

I think what really hurts is the lessened hash rate that adds to the variance. And I don't think we are all that newbie friendly. Though everyone here is helpful to the max, I think a lot of times we talk over their heads. They come here for a few days don't get the quickfix payouts they got at a larger pool.
194  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: March 14, 2017, 07:55:50 PM
Obviously people want the ability back to underclock. I've been mining for nearly 6 years now. It is extremely useful in so many scenarios. It makes 0 sense and is incredibly short sighted to defend removal of the feature.
True, it's very shortsighted of them to not cater to the wants of < 1% of their consumer base.  What are these people thinking by gearing their software towards the needs of those that buy 500-1,000 units at a time?  Huh
Then why sell to the home miner at all? We are just a bunch of PIA whiners anyway...

Obviously they want the all the coin they can get.

Since they are going to sell to us, they should at least make they attempt to give us some of what we want.

195  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Why are you still mining on AntPool? on: March 14, 2017, 05:35:29 PM
Undoubtedly there needs to be more than one person to switch, all users being equal.  Yes, there are exception scenarios like a miner having 5PH of gear, in which case being the only one to switch would be absolutely beneficial.

Even if miners didn't switch to my pool, there are other options out there.  Obviously as someone who runs a pool I'd love to see more miners use it; however, my initial post wasn't an advertisement for my pool (the advertisement is in my sig).  The initial post is more of a PSA.  Miners (other than Bitmain themselves), no matter how big or small, are guaranteed to lose coin by mining on AntPool.

As somebody pointed out earlier in this thread, people reading it are unlikely to be the target audience.  I'm sure there is a large percentage of hardware owners out there who don't even know of this forum's existence.  I'd bet there is a large percentage of hardware owners who never change a thing when setting up their miners.  They just plug it in and let it rip.  Ok, maybe they do some of the networking stuff - which any sysadmin would be familiar with - but changing mining parameters?  Not in their wheelhouse, so they just leave that stuff alone.  Hey, there are blinking green lights, so it's mining!
Just out of curiosity, I googled bitcoin mining pools. Which is probably what I did a few years ago, when I initially started mining and started with Slush. I believe he was running a no fee promo at the time.
Mostly what popped up in in the top 10 were Slush, BTC, GHASH.IO and a couple mining pool comparisons. Both the mining pool comparisons did not include some of the newer pools, including bravo-mining. One was a wiki https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Comparison_of_mining_pools
You might want to get that updated to include your pool. It would probably help our your hashrate.
196  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Can't login to Antminer s9's. on: March 14, 2017, 02:59:05 AM
I ran across something similar to your login issue with an s9 I have. I ended up subbing "admin" instead of "root" as either the username or password or both and it let me right in.

Come to think of it....it might have been an s7. But at least worth a try.
197  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Should I buy Asic? on: March 14, 2017, 12:16:58 AM
You can try this btc calculator https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/calculator
It allows you to plug in all the variables for your specific situation, including a network difficulty increase.
198  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [25+PH] KanoPool kano.is 0.9% PPLNS US,DE,SG,JP,NL,NYA 🐈 on: March 13, 2017, 09:16:47 PM

Agreed. The whole thing also kind of threw me off and I ended up posting some (in retrospect) unnecessary posts on the forum. Now I think it is a nice pool. Though I wonder about its longterm viability without any new hashrate coming online. The title suggests 25Ph/s in 2014, which seems to have not changed much at all (we are now at 26Ph/s), with very much different difficulty and thus hugely diminishing returns. Yes, that is still currently over USD 4000/month in income (the 0.9%), but baring in mind the costs of IT infrastructure and admin time, the pools needs to grow in hashrate in order to keep its relative size. Eligius used to be a nice pool which has gone into oblivion (though i still wonder about his business model running a free pool).

Kano updates the thread title periodically as the pool hash rate changes. We were at about 45ph during the summer. But has been a steady decline in our average hash rate, as can be seen in the monthly statistics Pool Avg. column.

The thing I like about 5Nd, is that work is rewarded even if I lose power or network connection. It also deters the pool hoppers chasing short term luck.

I think there may be a problem with the pool's time zone, at least for the shift timing. The shift timing states that it is in UTC, but:

The latest shift - 825j5 yuno - just started a couple of minutes ago and it states that it started at Mar‑12 17:08:27 (UTC). The time now is 18:15 UTC. It seems that the Pool is in UTC-1h timezone instead in UTC?
I believe the server is in California which just switched to daylight savings time
200  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is Bitcoin Mining still profitable? on: March 12, 2017, 04:18:05 AM

to do this they need to know how much the thing is worth, i don't think thye have any clue about its real value, you can even put $20 and they would pass it

despite this it's all tracked with UPS, if the package stop at the customs they cannot simply say that it was lost....

well, once again it depends on the country you live in
I know for sure that my friends had lots of headache and yes,the customs just lose it or say they have lost
and then they make you write a ton of documents and in the end you get the value of the parcel i.e. 45 euros in your case
maybe it is different at where you live, but be warned that this shit happens and happens too often
I know in some countries this takes place. Even in the Eurozone. UPS, FedEx, DHL, Mail... all are targets by shady customs agents. It doesn't matter the value on the package. I used to ship worldwide until I had a package show up in Italy that was opened and empty when the mail carrier delivered it. He made her sign for the empty box and reported it as delivered. Fortunately I had purchased insurance on it. Packages to Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Mexico are routinely "Lost" in customs. We send gifts to my wife's family in Ukraine from time to time, about half arrive to the destination. The others are mysteriously lost.

If it's going to Joe Blow End User and not someone with connections or power. It's fair game in lots of countries.

I finally quit shipping product internationally because of all the theft.
