Development Updates (January 13 - 19)

Qtum Core

Qtum core updates normally consist of Qtum Improvement Proposals. These QIPs are generated by both our developers and the community and in some cases requests from enterprise users. Our developers evaluate the impact of each QIP and work on high priority QIPs. All bug fixes and feature enhancements that have been issued to the core project will be listed here.

Qtum Neutron & x86 Virtual Machine

Qtum Neutron is the infrastructure to support new virtual machines and the first will be the x86 virtual machine allowing smart contract development in C, Rust and other languages. The EVM will continue, but the x86 VM will allow easy creation of smart contracts using safe, well-known, mature languages and tools, and also provide a new state memory model using DeltaDB.

Qtum 2020 Technology Roadmap – Detailed Explanation – 3 Areas to Improve Performance

Qtum has just released the 2020 technology roadmap, which includes three major updates for offline staking, Qtum Phantom privacy solution, and Qtum Neutron virtual machine architecture. The roadmap lists many technical goals, but for most users, these concepts are too abstract. This article will further explain the technology roadmap to help users better understand the meaning and innovation behind the technology.

How Blockchain Explorers Work

The Qtum developers released a nice Christmas gift, a new user interface for qtum.info, the official Qtum blockchain explorer. This week we look at how blockchain explorers work, and then next week we look at the new features in qtum.info.

TL;DR: Full node wallets can access the entire blockchain but their view is focused on the addresses (private keys) they manage. To see all the transactions and blockchain activity use a blockchain explorer, which is a browser and search engine for the blockchain. Explorers work using a database which holds all the blockchain information in easily searchable tables. The Qtum Explorer provides additional features such as rich list, smart contract calls, QRC20 transactions, and current network statistics.

Qtum Galaxy Update

Week of December 23 https://medium.com/@Qtum/qtum-galaxy-update-2dcfd2577f2b

Going into the weekend there is one more week of Qtum Galaxy — Full Nodes incentive Program, with a little over 100 Lucky Star awards to be given out, 40 Stellar Awards (20 each on December 27 and January 3), 50 rewards in the Twitter Lucky Draw, and the Planet Awards and Satellite Awards remain to be claimed after the Program ends on January 5th.

There is still plenty of time to join and refer your friends. And still, plenty of time to learn how to run a Qtum node and compete for some tasty awards! Get more information and sign up at: https://galaxy.qtum.org/

Virtual Private Servers in the Cloud

It is easy to follow the directions at https://galaxy.qtum.org/ (see the tutorial link in Step 5 for Windows, Mac, and Linux) for a desktop personal computer. You can also run nodes for Qtum Galaxy as a VPS (Virtual Private Server) in cloud data centers. This is an approach taken by some more experienced community members for Qtum Galaxy and is an easy way to add more nodes. Qtum Galaxy is all about adding Qtum nodes, the more the merrier, with more prize opportunities. To add a node on a PC or even Raspberry Pi takes setting up another computer, but setting up a VPS in the cloud only takes a few clicks, and once you understand how, it is easy to add a few more.
