1821  Economy / Economics / Re: Another One Bites the Dust: Entebbe Int. Airport falls to China's Debt Trap on: November 29, 2021, 03:30:19 AM
There's always the question of why you'd sign something you don't intend to uphold though, and signing away your only international airport doesn't sound great (although the pandemic probably made it harder to repay the loan too).

Airports actually aren't that profitible too so I'm surprised they're usable for collateral (I saw a study saying half of the airports in the UK were subsidised by the government - although it was on sustainability).
1822  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: how to open a wallet from previous version in newer version if it came from diff on: November 28, 2021, 09:00:03 PM
Just go to make a new wallet on the new computer and select the option "I already have a seed" when it comes up and you should be able to make your new wallet from what you have written down (if you wrote it correctly).

If you haven't already made a wallet on the other computer, you can restore a wallet straight away you don't have to make a new one (you might want to make a new one if you were successfully phished though and are confident moving funds).
1823  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you guys think 0.1BTC is enough to "make it"? on: November 28, 2021, 07:55:08 PM
0.1btc now is the same value as 25 btc back when I started in crypto. Iff we go as well as we have done, it should be a nice amount to keep holding.

Of course, if it's the maximum of affordability, you could always go lower - 0.01-0.05 are still worth 2.5-12.5btc from 2015 prices.
1824  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: strange bitcoin addresses, algorithms and bruteforce on: November 28, 2021, 06:12:19 PM
The set of addresses that contains just letters is the second biggest set.

You've limited base 58 to be around base 49.

I'm not certain of the range produced from running the hashing algorithm to get addresses but I think the range is quite big still. As I reread this it feels similar to the argument for n-1 character addresses being less secure than n character long addresses - which is false but seems like it might be logical to someone new.

I'd be interested if you could change it to numbers and release the times it takes to generate those addresses though (I think it should take about 49/9=5.44x longer - but I'm not that sure).

Edit: from my calculation above, you could visualise the range of the public keys being produces as if they're in base10 0-9 without 9 or 8.

Do you have an affiliation to this one (just kinda curious).

And like the others said bounties can be looked down on by the forum but it's mostly the managers at fault for those afaik (you just might not be able to rank up well too).
1826  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: shorting coin on: November 28, 2021, 03:29:42 AM
I don't know if there are many for it but coindcx might be an exchange to look at for that (not sure how trustworthy they are but I don't think they kyc anyone either).

There might be some decentralised exchanges too you could take a look at (also make sure they have enough liquidity).

You could also try to learn how to trade basically as that is better than gambling it and might not take too long - just don't risk more than you're comfortable (and start tiny).
1827  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: WHEN DO YOU BUY BITCOIN? on: November 28, 2021, 12:48:00 AM
In the past buying a dip, dcaing or just putting all in at once have all been successful in the past.

It might not be wise to put too much in anyway but to scope of the market it might be easier to analyse.

Most investments depend on when you'll get the money as to when you'll invest it - for most assets, buying the dips can net higher returns than dcaing but take more tracking/watching to do.
1828  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: When is the Bitcoin symbol going to be added to the keyboard? on: November 28, 2021, 12:12:04 AM
It'll just be added to the emoji keyboard at some point i think.

There are a lot of custom buttons computers can be designed to have so it might just take up one of those (perhaps control+shift+b). That being said, if there is a currency internationally recognised it'll probably just be put on the 3 or 4 key) (the uk layout has space for euros, pounds and dollars).
1829  Other / Meta / Re: how improve rank?? on: November 27, 2021, 12:20:10 PM
You have a lot of posts in the altcoin section and that area is often seen as quite spammy.

In order to rank up you need to earn some merits but you'll have to do that by looking round the forum and finding ways you can interact constructively with topics and discussions. I wouldn't get too worried about ranking up though, just enjoy what you're doing here.
1830  Other / Off-topic / Re: Learn well before you invest in cryptocurrency !!!! - Awareness on: November 26, 2021, 01:59:28 PM
There seem to have been quite a few examples of this in the past and before investing in an asset it's assumed you'll do your research on it. Maybe exchanges would do better for themselves and the entire cryptospace too if they showed the good and bad sides of crypto investment (similar to how stock markets tell people not to sell crashes/have short term goals).
1831  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTCD (not bitcoind) initial block download - ibd - will take two weeks on: November 26, 2021, 01:23:29 PM
I think you're going to find out how slow it'll get when you reach the end of 2017 in blocktime.

Whatever you're using to do the download on also, you could try killing as many background tasks as you can if you don't need them (you could also boot the machine in safe mode with networking for Windows to make it faster or kill the desktop for Linux if you don't need a gui).

But if you currently use HDD, but have SSD on your device, you could try make symbolic link on directory which store UTXO.

It's also possible to move the files back from an ssd after the sync has completed so you don't have to worry about doing too many writes on it.
1832  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some rebalancing questions. on: November 25, 2021, 10:53:16 PM
What board was the topic posted on originally?

Development and technical discussion.

Yeah, it kinda makes sense it was deleted. Probably could've been moved but still...

Rebalancing can cause regret the other way too if:
1. What happens if you get a flash crash as the coin is rising and you put it off for that time interval to get more? Or if you don't and it does go higher, how would you react to losing profits?
2. Rebalancing can be expensive, there's a few fees involved and it might not be worthwhile - I'd argue you're better off doing percentage based changes rather than time based.

Yeah, that's the thing. Which makes it all the more important to limit the rebalancing steps, not to mention rebalancing's inherent shortcomings (or potential shortcomings), which makes a bit too dangerous (in my opinion) to just automate the process on a pure time basis. My point is it may be better not only to combine both, but to add other safeguards (be it the ones I listed or some I surely missed), in order to minimize risk and/or maximize profit.
The point is a website that offer automated rebalancing on a time basis only seems a bit dangerous to me...

If I were to use that strategy, I'd be a lot more interested in maximising my risk for a longer period and then extracting funds out - the market seems flexible/more adaptable for that too.

Automating the process is dangerous but so is selling something that was valued highly and then sold off a bit because the people who bought it at a higher price just wanted it to quickly go higher. If I was to invest in something performing as well as bitcoin, I'd wait for it to do quite a nice return before rebalancing because it reduces risk later on overall afaik.
1833  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: why there is change address. on: November 25, 2021, 06:30:10 PM
I read that when you sent bitcoin to someone the output you are sending is the balance of the input you receive last. So you will not use the balance in your wallet until the transaction is confirm and your balance is send back to you through change address.
Quote from:  Elyse Jupiter
Consider the example of taking a $20 bill out of your wallet to pay for a $5 cup of coffee. You would give the $20 to the cashier, and the cashier would give you back the $15. While the $15 belongs to you, it is not available for the time it takes the cashier to give you back your change
But if am using my ordinary fiat wallet and I use $20 to pay bill and I still have other dollars in my wallet I can use them to buy other things before my change will come. Why is  bitcoin spending different.

What your bank does is store a number for your balance and they keep changing this number based on the transactions you do.

With bitcoin you send funds to someone and the change back to yourself (often to your change address).

As to why this is actually done, I'm not sure - it might allow for privacy to be improved or security in some ways.
1834  Economy / Economics / Re: Is this a clear sign of high inflation? on: November 25, 2021, 02:16:37 PM
The stock markets in each country are often effected by both domestic markets and international ones. There's lots of international interest in growth stocks in places like the US, and interest in dividend stocks internationally in places like the UK and Germany.

However, things like REITs will obviously have an impact on inflation as they can send up the cost of living.
1835  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How far can we talk about that specific topic? (Topic not updated) on: November 25, 2021, 02:01:47 PM
Newbies bump old threads because they don't look at the time and they'll still get a response from members, it's not like a chat room where their messages might not get read.

I think the only place where bumping an old thread is acceptable is when the thread was created by you to suggest a project you were looking at/working on and it got some good interaction.
1836  Economy / Economics / Re: What do you think does this Cities have that we dont? on: November 25, 2021, 02:51:30 AM
For a lot of those countries, it's not very risky to do something and fail and enough people know that to try. The UK historically has around 30 years of innovation and 20 years of slowness (very roughly) and if this has been the same internationally then that might have been a contributing factor to those countries that have experienced all (3?) cycles so far.

Rather than the government it's probably more the culture though too that forces the government to make decisions. But I'm quite surprised China, India, Germany and France also aren't on the list if this is just based off innovating.

1837  Economy / Economics / Re: Can civilization revert to a barter system on: November 25, 2021, 01:57:47 AM
It probably wouldn't work either way. There's the argument that governments might like things being untraceable for a few reasons: one of the main ones being so their donors can launder money and I could imagine a lot of politicians may have bought "private" or potentially illegal things in the past they'd want to keep hidden.

A barter based system would rely solely on how much you trust other people though or how much they trust you (or the contacts of both) and possibly how much time they have when a CBDC could just automate everything.
1838  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some rebalancing questions. on: November 24, 2021, 10:35:05 PM
So I started this topic on another board, and it was deleted. Since no explanation was offered, all I can do is guess it was on the wrong board. A heads-up would've been nice though.
Either way, this is important to me. I hope it won't get deleted this time. Here's a copy/paste of said post.

As I’ve stated before, I’ve been following several courses on cryptocurrency trading and investing. In one of them, I came across a website (Shrimpy.io) that provides automatic portfolio rebalancing to investors.

Now, for some reason, they have a whitepaper you can download. I just read it. Very interesting indeed.
Of course the whitepaper is  more of a cleverly disguised advertisement, but it still made for a good read, and raised a couple of questions.

Two kinds of rebalancing. Why not three?

First question is fairly simple. Rebalancing...

You could have the third as a combination of the two but I don't think it matters too much.

What board was the topic posted on originally?

And yes a lot of investment ideas are posted as the "best" way to do things but they still are ideas (nothing is perfect and few things are actually great).

1839  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: does this have something to do with bitcoin's current decline... on: November 24, 2021, 10:22:49 PM
I thought China already banned mining? Surely they can't say the same thing twice in the same quarter and have investors actually listen to them?

There are enough countries able to facilitate profitible mining at the moment so I doubt China or a bunch of countries banning mining will do much but give slow blocks (likely unnoticeably) for a few weeks.
1840  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Regarding my payment requested on Sunday Nov 21 2021 on: November 23, 2021, 05:21:36 PM
Hi,

...

On Sunday i e Nov 21 2821, I have requested for a payment of ... BTC to be sent through manual (slow)

But I haven't received till now.

I am unable login to my freebitco.in account from Monday as I might have entered incorrect password. So I tried to recover password from forgot password link multiple times but no mail is coming...  Even I added noreply@freebitco.in in contacts of my mail address..

It would be great if you can resolve it as soon as possible as I require for funds urgently.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation

Their support thread is here and they're quite responsive (their support thequin was just online earlier today): https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=320959.19440;topicseen
