18461  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] MergedMining BTC/NMC Mining Company on: January 31, 2012, 07:38:18 PM
Perhaps you already answered that, but what do you plan on doing with the NMC ?
Sell it at some point (when ?) or sending them to shareholders if/when it will become possible with GLBSE ?

Some NMC has been sold off in the past (that is where our BTC balance came from) and more could be sold if I feel it would benefit the company.  However, I do like the idea of using them to build a company savings account.  There are no plans to pay dividends in NMC.

2.5 times annual earnings is a good place to start.
18463  Economy / Gambling / Re: Bets of Bitcoin [cross post] on: January 31, 2012, 05:49:52 PM
Second, it shouldn't be possible for one person to win more than they have bet. If I bet 1 BTC that something will happen, and only one person bets against me and they bet .1 BTC, and the thing doesn't happen, they win my entire 1 BTC even though I could only have won their .1 BTC. The way I think it should work is that the person betting .1 BTC should get a payoff of .2 BTC, and the person who bet 1 BTC should get .9 BTC back.

(All of this minus fees, of course.)

Disagree, that's the purpose of odds. If you're betting on an underdog you're getting ten-to-one odds. So although it's unlikely that you'll win, the payoff is more lucrative.

I see the usefulness of that, but it doesn't work with bets that have few people betting. I started the betting with 1 BTC on a bet I thought was roughly 50/50, I wouldn't have done so if I had known one person could bet .1 BTC and win ten times that much.

There are always odds on every bet.  Sounds like you've never been to Vegas or a horse track.

I love this site.  My only complaint is that there aren't enough users (some kind of timeline showing your bets would be nice too).  Hopefully the word will get out.

I have updated the original post to display our current NMC balance.  This balance is updated automatically using a script.  Go ahead and test it.   Wink

but by the time the difficulty updates - this is already a "stale" indicator.
i would change your sentence to:
Quote
An increasing difficulty means that more coins were being mined than the previous average.
And I wouldnt call the current situation stable - the price dropped from 6.7 to 5.2 a few days ago
Another thing is the size of the change, short term changes in mining BTC are more likely to come from a "lucky streak" rather than the hashrate of the entire network jumping by 10% in a few days

Future difficulty projections (i.e. increasing/decreasing difficulty) is not a "stale" indicator.  It's an indicator that works to gauge current BTC supply, hence my "short term" description.  For example, right now the difficulty projection shows that 10% more BTC than normal is being mined during this cycle (right now, not "stale").

I wouldn't call the current situation stable either, but it has "stabilized a bit since the great bubble of 2011."  If you had been around 7 months ago, you would not dispute that..

thanks- thats a useful link i will keep it. it does appear to co-inside with an increase in mining difficulty so that alone could explain it! . reg

Costia got it right, difficulty is related to price, but for the most part it follows the price.

That may be true in the longer term as it indicates a profitable mining scenario, but not in the short term.  An increasing difficulty means that more coins are being mined than the previous average.  More coins being mined = more supply.  More supply = downward pressure resulting in a lower price.  This may not have been true in the past, because supply and demand were more "out of whack" than they are now and the market has stabilized a bit since the great bubble of 2011.

When you "invest" in Bitcoins you are entering a world of unregulated if not somewhat nefarious
manipulators, out-of-control margin "gamblers', and over-exuberant traders who are speculating
Bitcoin out of existence with parabolic rallies, pump-n-dump crashes, and Bitcoinica starfish nonsense.
Yes, I believe you have correctly identified the reason why Bitcoin is trading at 1/100th of it's most established legitimate competitor in spite of being far superior.

I had been day-trading in Bitcoins like most everyone else. Now working on looking for
longer trends and actually investing in it. Need to appreciate the long traders a little more,
who are inBTC for the longer haul.
You can do both.  Spread your BTC around.  Gamble, trade, invest, donate, spend...  Do it all.

This is one of the problems with having an international currency with no banks or government to protect it.  Sure, there are benefits, but there are also many flaws and there is a reason why most currencies are and will always be safer than bitcoin.
We have something better than banks and governments.  We have a community of people who are working together to see Bitcoin succeed.  Eventually the real bitcoin holders will outnumber the margin gamblers, you just have to be patient.
18474  Economy / Speculation / Re: shit, shit, shit on: January 27, 2012, 09:07:08 PM
My fundamental analysis from last summer was way off.  I would not have believed it could have gotten down to $2.00 absent a system failure, and not even close.  For this reason, my confidence in my own ability to estimate the lows that can be plumbed remains weak.

I remember telling people that .mp3s were the next big thing in 1993. I also remember saying that Apple was a screaming buy at $4.  Sometimes it takes a while for the market to properly value something...

In my opinion, the best way to value Bitcoin is to think of it as a publicly owned company.  Right now, there are roughtly 8 million bitcoins in existance, with a $5 value.  That's about a 40 million dollar market cap.  You could even go a step further and say that investors have already priced in the roughly 20 million bitcoins that will be in existance.  That would be an estimated 100 million dollar market cap.  Is the Bitcoin idea/network/economy worth 100 million dollars?  In my opinion, it is will be worth far more.

The closest publicly traded company that offers the service that Bitcoin offers is Western Union.  Western Union charges higher fees, isn't anonymous, can't be be claimed from the privacy of your own home, isn't supported by an enormous public network and can't be used as a tax shelter.  Even with all of those shortcomings to Bitcoin, Western Union has a market cap of nearly 12 billion dollars.  If Bitcoin were to be widely accepted 10 years from now, it wouldn't be insane to assume that it would match Western Union's market cap.  For the sake of argument, lets say that Bitcoin did reach the adoption of Western Union.  If Bitcoin were worth 10 billion, that would be $500/BTC...

Somehow, Bitcoin never fails to surprise in this regard. There is ALWAYS something completely ruining trust in it. Anyone want to take bets on what it’ll be post bitcoinica?

I don't want to give anyone ideas...
18476  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE 2.0 open for testing on: January 26, 2012, 08:27:33 PM
Would migrating to something like a .me domain eliminate that liability?
Not sure, it would have to be a domain that is not under control of a U.S. company. National domains would put us under control of another country so I'm not sure what's the best option.
.bit would be ideal.

For the moment GLBSE is ok, we're still quite small and hope to continue to be able to fly under the radar for the time being.

18477  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] Honey Caramels for Valentine's on: January 26, 2012, 06:37:34 PM
Of course we also sell honey.
How much for a jar of honey?

maybe the plain or almond, but I didn't order any to try, so I don't know
I ordered the almond, plain & chocolate flavors.  The almond was my favorite.  It had a complete candy bar taste to it and I highly recommend.  The plain was also very good.  My wife, who doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, tasted the plain caramel and said, "this is excellent."  The chocolate had a very dark rich flavor, I could tell they used high quality dark chocolate.  After having tasted these, I wish I would have tried the salted.  I can see another order of perhaps almond/salted/plain/chocolate in my future.

Box of assorted caramels and free lip balm received.  Items were exactly as described and packaging was excellent.  It was less than 48 hours from the time I placed my order to having the product in my hands.  Definitely a great seller.

I can't stand all this liking and tweeting bullshit. Everyone knows that the internets feed on hate. Research shows that common hates produce stronger social bonds than common likes. But where is hate monetized on the internets. Like if I suggest something and gamble that everyone will think it is worth hating on. If they hate on it in sufficient number I get paid. If not I lose my deposit. Then a great repository of hate can be built. Sort of like the library of Alexandria.

If trolling could be monetized that would be good too.
Hm. How about a site that allows you to pay to drive the item DOWN instead of up? Then you can monetize in both directions! Grin
Haha, I like that idea!
