I just got off the phone with Bovada and they informed me that it usually takes seconds for sending bitcoin from coinbase to the electrum wallet... it's been well over 20 minutes and the funds still say unconfirmed..
Is this unusual?
no it's normal. you really should have learned how bitcoin works before using it. transactions take an average of 10 minutes for a single confirmation. i don't know what threshold of confirmations electrum deems fit but generally speaking 6 confirmations (60 minutes on average) is considered sufficient for a transaction to be deemed irreversible.

slightly OT, but can electrum sweep a key 'offline' - i mean can the sweep be initiated on an offline wallet and then loaded onto an online machine ?
cos i'm wondering if the sweep function is vulnerable to some form of attack if done on an online machine, as you're sweeping a private key...
It can't be done on an offline computer. But it can be done in a watch-only wallet on an online computer. So the private key of the target address can be on an offline PC. The private key you are sweeping would still be exposed though.

zaptakes two things occured to me now after reading pooya87s post. First I suggest trying to open your wallet with a 1.8 version of electrum. If you manage to open it then you should view the seed and write it down for later restoration in a newer version. Sending the bitcoins to another address you control will probably not work because there have been changes to the bitcoin network that the 1.8 version doesn't support.
The other thing that's interesting is that you forgot to mention in the OP that your wallet was on a USB stick? Is that correct? I know a lot of lay people just yank the USB stick out without first unmounting it in software. They don't do the whole safely remove USB stick thing that you are supposed to do. So maybe you did that and that is the cause of your file corruption. It would explain why you were initially able to open the wallet but can't do it anymore.

yeah the console tab is what jhanzo means. do this for both the change address and the other one. let's see if either one is in your wallet.

I've added bitcoins to my electrum wallet, and tried to send to another wallet on a market web site. It's been two days and nothing has happened. The bitcoins are still in my wallet. It seemed to go through... signed and confirmed... I set it to 5 blocks. What could be wrong?
thanks, Trisolo
try switching to a different electrum server using tools menu > network. you say the bitcoins are still in your wallet so what does this transaction do anyway? maybe you can save the transaction and then upload it to pastebin so we can see what it's all about. you can find the save option in the transaction details that omegastarscream talked about above.

LOL the developer doesn't control your wallet. It's not a bank!
Tell us what's going on and maybe we can guide you. If there is a problem with a transaction then tell us what you see in your electrum wallet and post the transaction id here so we can check it on the blockchain.

Aha. Dammit.
So i've compromised my cold-storage wallet?
I'm probably right then in thinking the only thing to do now is create a new cold-storage wallet on my offline computer and use it to generate a new watching wallet on the online computer?
Damn, what a pain.
Thanks a million for your help though!
Yes that's right. There's a guide here if you are interested: http://docs.electrum.org/en/latest/coldstorage.html

right click on the transaction on the history tab and select details. it will list which addresses the inputs came from.
note that if you are looking to refund the sender then don't assume they control those input addresses. it could be that they sent the money from a shared wallet like those on exchanges. you need to contact them and ask them for an address to send the refund to.

remove your wallet file or somebody will come and steal all your bitcoins. if you want someone to brute force the wallet you should hire dave from walletrecoveryservices.com. you then deal with him in private.

so i typed in what you suggested and it come back with the answer true. so what next??
it seems like your wallet is out of sync with the blockchain. click on the green/red orb icon in the bottom right of the window or go to tools menu > network to bring up the server selection dialog box. switch to a different server and wait for it to sync with it.

If you need something smaller then look at my plugin bitcoin address or the bitcoin way plugin for woocommerce. In the case of my plugin the files in /includes/libs are all you need. This code is borrowed from the bitcoin way plugin. The function mpk_to_bc_address() in electrumhelper.php does what you want. I don't know how codeigniter libraries work or I would offer to convert this for you. But you can use the above php code directly can't you?

Well, for use Skrill, I think there has a high fee. but, if they start accepting bitcoin, I think it is very good news. but, I think they'll give you a high fee even though they accept bitcoin. but now I also have not seen the news that Skrill accept bitcoin . Skrill has indeed high fees, but I don't think many people will be bothered by that since it's nothing more than an alternative way of buying Bitcoin. In some cases people end up buying coins at a fee of around 5-10% due to the fact that they haven't got any other option than this. Just to be clear, Skrill itself doesn't accept Bitcoin. Skrill just seems to have a friendly policy towards crypto in general which of course is a nice change for once. You can only deposit BTC into your skrill account. You can't withdraw money from your skrill account in the form of bitcoin. It's quite typical really. Everyone is happy to take BTC because it is an irreversible payment method but few will give you BTC in exchange for your dollars.

Since electrum is a deterministic wallet it is possible to derive all the addresses in the wallet with the extended public key which is also known as the master public key (MPK). You cannot derive private keys with just the MPK and without the private keys you cannot spend your bitcoins. So it is safe to install the MPK on your web server and let it generate addresses for users to send money to without any risk of theft. This is how bitcoin payments for woocommerce does it. It is also how mycelium gear works. It is how you should do things too. You haven't mentioned which shopping cart software you are using? Perhaps there is a bitcoin plugin for that. Otherwise I can point you to opensource deterministic address derivation libraries in the programming language that cart is written in so you can make your own.

your math probably isn't correct because it is supposed to take until the heat death of the universe even if you use all the computers in the world non-stop . you're using just 1000 asics in your example. part of that seed mnemonic is actually a checksum so you have to discount that. once you remove the checksum you find it's a 124bit seed. so 2^124 possibilities.

And, I've tried on quite a few different occasions to restore my wallet using the seed that I took a picture of but it's not working. I hit restore, enter the seed (exactly as shown in the pic I took) and I have to name the wallet and then it says/shows "loading wallet/s" and when it's done there is no money in my Electrum wallet, it's kinda like I created a brand new wallet instead of restoring my old one.
Install electrum on a desktop pc and run it. Choose to restore from seed and restore your wallet. Then after that is done press ctrl+A or select addresses from the wallet menu. A new tab labeled addresses should appear. Go there and expand the list of "used" addresses by clicking on the arrow/+ sign next to "used". Can you see any familiar addresses there like the HEL one?
