18781  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I just got hacked - any help is welcome! (25,000 BTC stolen) on: June 18, 2011, 04:58:12 PM

Thanks for the guide. So, the wallet.dat file doesn't have to be "connected" to the internet, ever, to deposit money into it?

No, it doesn't.  A user can create a new wallet.dat file on an unconnecte machine (by installing and starting the client, then shutting the client back down safely) copy the receiving address that the client produces onto any medium, copying the wallet.dat file onto a cheap thumbdrive, put the thumbdrive into a safe, and send coins from his mybitcoin.com account to the receiving address into the indefinate future.  This is pretty much what I do for my long term savings, as I have just such a setup.  I have a special address in my mybitcoin.com addressbook called "savings" that I send my overage to, and I don't have to take my thumbdrive out of the safe to do it.

What about withdrawals?

This requires the wallet.dat file.

do u ever worry about consolidating all ur coins onto one address in the blockchain?  what about a collision?

i know this has been discussed a zillion times but what if the gov't decides to brute force the top 10 btc address holders?

@finnthecelt

Haha, nice. Weimar cash pictures, the first is a lady burning them for heat. The second shot I suppose is a man out to buy a loaf of bread. Or to stop up a leak in a basement wall. Smiley

no, no, that Ben Berspankme's grandfather.

i find it interesting that allinvain only posted once to this thread early on but has disappeared since.  if my reputation was being attacked like this unfairly, i'd be fighting back every other post.

So your saying the average person in this situation should respond as you believe you would?

i consider myself an avg person and yes, it would be quite natural to defend ones self.  OTOH, sometimes guilty people when caught slink away into the shadows.

OTOH, perhaps he's a much bigger person than we are and chooses not to engage us.

Actually, if you go back and read my OP, you will see I never referred to myself in such a way, nor would I ever. The reason I even mentioned it is because i understand the workings of the conspiracy. The bankers, the system, the secret societies etc. They work in such a way that manipulates everything they contact or touch. To understand what they have done, is to know what evil they reap and how they go about it. It's Ordo Ab Chao. They will always come out on top, because if they don't, someone else will, and they refuse to allow that to happen. Chaos is embraced by them. Because the end result is Order along the lines they seek, instead of what you or I seek.

Money is the Rothschilds and International Bankers weapon they use to control the whole world. Iceland rebelled. Now Greece is rebelling. These are the people we are fighting. You think, sitting in your chair, at your computer, bitcoin may be something cool. But bitcoin is a NUCLEAR WEAPON against the global power structure. You might think it's "neat", and some might think it's pretty "cool". But those terms do not come close to describing what it truly is, and can be, if it succeeds. It can change the whole world, and there are people who do not want that, no matter what, and will stop at nothing to stop bitcoins.

You, Travis, may just be in the middle of the real war battlefield playing with your G.I. Joe dolls. This is NO GAME!

talk about chaos.  we have just begun what will be the most chaotic 5-6 period in history.  i believe Bernanke has been ordered by his bankster bosses to save the USD at all costs.  after all, this is the Feds only franchise, the world's reserve currency which so many banksters have used to makes billions in profit.  as the USD rises, all assets will get crushed incl. gold and silver as they have benefitted on the way up from infinite liquidity.

we are witnessing the great rollover of the US stock mkt which will mimic a Japan scenario for many years.  this rise in the USD might have gone unchallenged but along came Bitcoin.  they will not be able to control this animal like they have for the most part with gold and silver.  they will do everything they possibly can to derail it.  they will be forced to let all assets deflate and wash out the bad debt and yes, conspiracies will abound but for good reason.  this will be the end of the financial global order and the beginning of the peoples money.

Oh snap, I forgot I was the only one with twelve posts, the only new guy to join as of late. That must look suspicious.

my, my, does anyone notice a pattern in his posts?

I don't have to answer shit, but I will anyway. I heard about Bitcoin from another forum. It resonated with me because over the last few years I've had an interest in free market economics, meaning I'm against the central banking system. I understand that central banking only impoverishes all those who are not in the politically connected or banking class. If bitcoin catches on, it will upset this corrupt system. I'm also interested in seeing if I can profit off of bitcoin, I intend to be a speculator, and hold on to some coins for a long time to see where they go.

And if I'm going to be put on trial for my sarcasm, I can also say that I know 2-3 members here that have established post histories who can vouch for me, because I know them from another forum.
ok, fair enough, sounds like ur one of us.  ur entitled to ur strong opinions.

Yeah, brute force against what?

I'm saying the government has a lot of power, and if they want to move against bitcoin, they are not going to fart around paying people to post "durr I lost my bitcoin" stories. The government is stupid, but not so stupid that they would choose such an attack vector.

what attack should they use in light of what Satoshi has invented?
18787  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 18, 2011, 04:20:28 AM
in the absence of a way to short btc into oblivion like they do gold and silver, the most obvious way for the Fed to destroy btc would be to contribute to extreme volatility of its value thru propaganda or manipulation.

buy a crapload on the way up to suck everyone in then sell it off in a hurry to crash everyone out.

dangerous strategy in the long run if btc has true value like most of us here think b/c it forces an artificial short squeeze on manipulators who want to bring it down.  in order for the Fed to "control" the market they continually have to have a sizeable position at all times which means at some pt they have to "buy back" the market after a selloff.  perhaps tonite was the beginning of this.

also note the large number of short seller advocates appearing recently.  they all insist they should be allowed to short btc in terms of USD's and post margin calls in USD's.  if ur a US bank u happen to have infinite USD's courtesy of Berspanke to hold ur short position forever which creates a huge drag on the value of gold and silver and btc if we let it.

a way to neutralize this would be to force any short seller of btc to have to post margin calls in btc.
18788  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 18, 2011, 04:08:12 AM
If it was, it has backfired... It has created a strong awareness of the VALUE of bitcoin, now people say "Wow, Bitcoin's are worth so much that I need to protect them like GOLD, or MONEY!"  Now people are going to think bitcoin as something of value and protect it!

don't be an apologist for him.  the price has fallen 75% since around when he posted.  i'm not saying he is the only reason for the fall but i do think it helped it along especially is it was part of a coordinated approach.

"THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING BITCOINS!!1"

bitrebel and his scooby-doo crew of internet conspiracy experts are on the case, and they are here to logically deduce what happened without the need of facts or evidence.

Why would he let someone steal all of his Bitcoins? Why? Why did he not appear to be more sad in his post? Its just too fishy..

Wouldn't a super l33t and powerful organization like the CIA want to perform psyops such as this that are only temporarily effective at best, instead of simply using brute force and power to pull the plug on bitcoin? Oh definitely. So with this compelling case in mind, anyone who suggests that perhaps he just fucked up, must be on the payroll of the CIA. This story is too convenient a defense of bitcoin for it to not be true.

Travis with 12 posts; why r u here?  do u love Bitcoin? yes or no?  r u enamored with the technology, the economics, the cryptography, the implications for the USD, or what?  answer the question.
18790  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 18, 2011, 03:43:23 AM
wow..just wow..you people have issues..this is a perfect example of what is so messed up with frequent forum posters..they suspect some grand conspiracies...

This post is pure garbage..

@JackRabiit - it was a tad bit more than 25K...did you see the screenshot??! I don't know why they did not take the whole amount. My only guess is that they had this wallet from when I had just 25K in there. I moved a portion fo the total 26K funds to the address belonging to bitcoinexpress site I was trying to develop..and then later on I moved the remaining funds back into my windows wallet..so they most likely did not have the new keys..

Stop looking for stupid childish conspiracies..there aren't any.

@Clipse - I came here hoping that someone from the exchanges or one of the developers would notice and help me figure out a way to track the funds..reading the chain block and keeping an eye on the funds is beyond me. I needed someone to write some sort of automated tool. I could not solve this on my own sadly. That's why I posted here. I regret doing so now seeing as how all I've noticed is people attacking me and accusing me.

@bitrebel - while your conspiracy theories may be valid for something else in this case they're big fail..nothing of what you assert is true. Not even one bit. Let me just say that I forgive you in advance when eventually I will be vindicated.

P.S Yes they were mined almost since the start. Also I registered on the forum but did not join the discussion because at the time I was not sure about bitcoin's future and I guess I wasn't all that serious about it. I did not wish to join the discussions also because I had nothing to contribute. Later on when difficulty increased I decided to get into mining, and hence I joined the discussions. If you notice before this event most of my posts were in the mining section of the forum.

Quoted for posterity.

thats great.  i'm sorry but i have to pt out the obvious; notice all the inconsistencies?
18791  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 18, 2011, 03:39:11 AM

I certainly don't think you can psychoanalyze someone from a few forum posts though and to to ascertain their emotional state, nor can you predict people's reactions to losing large sums of unrealized money.

ah, but right here in the forum one can go over ALL his posts:

http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?action=profile;u=198;sa=showPosts

and i have read alot of them and i have to agree something isn't quite right esp. beginning around 12 h before the supposed 25K btc heist.
18792  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 18, 2011, 03:30:29 AM
notice how all the doomers and gloomers suddenly appeared in wave after wave after the fall in price?  newbies with less than 10 posts flooded the forums with post after post about how the sky was falling.  some of these pricks were extremely vociferous with swearing and pronouncements of btc bubbles.

now notice how quickly these same folks have disappeared?

and finally, notice the sudden ramp in price tonite from 13 to 17?
18793  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 18, 2011, 03:09:48 AM

yes it would be allinvain.

now why would u leave 25K BTC's on an open miner rig just after you were fortunate enough to get a shot over the bow by losing 3.90 BTC?

Because "FAIL" is something that is new to the internet. Millions and billions of people out there, but no way one of them could screw up and do something stupid. This guy was the first.

thats a straw man argument.  allinvain is not just another one of the millions or billions.  he supposedly is one of the early adopters who were lucky enough to start mining when btc was in the cent range.  these ppl tend to be smart, calculating, paranoid, security conscious hacker types who don't trust anyone.  and you mean to tell me he did nothing to protect his wallet worth $500,000 and even $750,000 near the top despite having 12 h to do something about it after having 3.90 btc stolen from the same wallet?  LOL!

i'm a non techie and from the very start, i have been conducting myself and my wallets with WAY more security conscious maneuvers than him.

18795  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 18, 2011, 02:50:25 AM
this from his original post:

"Needles to say I feel like I have lost faith in bitcoin."

this is total BS.  if this happened to me and i had been mining for over a year with a wide open rig, the first thing i'd say is "i'm a dumbshit".

look, on June 13, 2011, 01:58:35 am, he complains he got 3.90 BTC hacked from his Slush acct.  this is about 12 h before he supposedly gets hacked for 25K BTC's.

now why would u leave 25K BTC's on an open miner rig just after you were fortunate enough to get a shot over the bow by losing 3.90 BTC?
18797  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 18, 2011, 02:25:09 AM
Agreed, Why the hell would you have 25000 coins in your wallet, And aside from that who would steal exactly 25k coins. Anyone would just dump the balance

not to mention 25K wallets on your mining machine continuously hooked up to the Internet?  i'm not a techie and this immediately struck me as very odd; something i wouldn't do.
18798  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 18, 2011, 02:23:13 AM
"I'm looking into this as well. The thing is this happened at 12:00 in the afternoon when I was sleeping with all my doors locked. I would've noticed if someone physically had access to my computer. Also maybe someone stole the wallet earlier? I have to serious do some searching into who was at my place over the last month."

funny, i've had the same suspicions myself.  first he says his computer is at work but who sleeps at work and describes his work place like a home?

I should mention it's a CSRF vulnerability. so people know what to do to protect themselves.

what is CSRF?

One more thing I would like to mention on this.  It's pretty common sense, but make sure you allow the client to download the full block chain with an empty wallet before you move your wallet.dat onto your pc.  Less time its on a networked computer the better!

this has been my procedure from the start but this thread brings up 2 questions:
1.  are you worried about having left wallet "fingerprints" on your pc that could be reconstructed and stolen?
2.  have u tried to store the entire data directory on the usb stick thus allowing u to not move the wallet to your pc?  i have recently tried this and encountered 2 problems
    a.  its enormously slow to download the block chain and it appears u can't just drag a full block chain from one folder to another to avoid the ful download.
    b.  sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't in terms of the client being able to detect this usb data folder.
