Not in Bitcoin.

But in it's users? Yes, sometimes.

Haha, such is with everything that involves humans. Never underestimate the stupidity of people... they never cease to surprise me.

Is this a similar discussion to how the adult industry helped bring about many popular (and now not so popular) technologies?

http://skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/5052/is-the-pornography-industry-important-in-the-adoption-of-new-technology-or-media

Ie, print, vhs, dvd, etc.

OMG ban DVDS and VHS and cash!  Grin

It will be interesting to see what would happen to the value of another altcoin if Silk Road or some other black market site started accepting them.

Closure of these black market sites does not affect coin price, look at SR or Atlantis examples

Bitcoin dropped quite a bit after the takedown of SR, but it bounced back quite quickly. I actually thought Bitcoin would be hit worse, but I'm glad I was wrong.

I'm interested to see how much you would buy my sig for. I can easily make 70+ quality posts a day (check 'em out) and aim to make at least 1200 a month. My Primedice signature expires on the 17th this month, so I would possibly be up for after then. Depends on what you're offering though. Thanks.
19385  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: if you want btc to succeed start dumping your iDevices/Apple on: December 12, 2013, 03:28:35 PM

I never said I was focusing on brand. I just asked for suggestions for alternatives to iPhones.

before you ask for a suggestion you need to understand what you need/want
I guess any mobile can replace it to make a call..

Well, one like an iPhone, but not Tongue.

As long as it has similar features to an iPhone and has similar apps, then I don't really require much from it to be honest.
19386  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: if you want btc to succeed start dumping your iDevices/Apple on: December 12, 2013, 03:23:01 PM
I want to get rid of my iphone. What do people suggest as a replacement? I Was a bug Nokia fan back in the day, but haven't had one for years.
Stop focusing on the brand and start looking at the operative system and the hardware.

19388  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: any experience whit bitcoinsaresexy.com?? on: December 12, 2013, 03:15:35 PM
As a general rule I'd avoid using a site called bitcoinsaresexy haha.

Are you wanting to sell exclusively for paypal? I wouldn't recommend it PP, but you can sell your coins on here quite quickly and easily. Just make sure to use escrow.

All this mining is ultimately meaningless

So is life. What do?

It's not meaningless it people are giving it value. The value comes from what people are willing to pay and exchange it for.

Well, I prefer the term Libertarian Socialist for a number of reasons. I'm not afraid of being labelled as an Anarchist, I'd just rather not fall victim to peoples' ignorance on the subject and because Socialism fits my specific beliefs better. It's easier to tell people with a fresh mind what Libertarian Socialism is rather than try convince them what Anarchism is not. Also, Anarchism is a broader more general term and has a bigger scope as well. It's like calling a dog a canine. Yes, a dog is a canine, but so are wolves and foxes, but they are all different.

You have a fair point my friend and I salute you!

I distrust any label anyway, for they lead to dogma and I prefer to deal in catma instead Smiley

Also I would like to point out to the OP, that in his thought experiment there remains the need for some sort of organization or authority to execute this plan. We're talking about one single entity controlling all the monetary wealth of the world (for some period of time). Good luck populating it with people of good will, who will resist the corrupting influence such a position of power brings with itself Wink

I also dislike labels and would rather do without them, but if we are pigeon-holing then Libertarian Socialism is what I'd fall under Wink.

Are you interested in selling your signature space? We might be interested in buying it! Send us a private message if you have over 200 posts to discuss terms.]

Yeah, it's very similar. The argument of Bitcoin being used for nefarious/unscrupulous purposes is also a mute one. You can buy all the illegal stuff and more with fiat money anyway.
19394  Other / Off-topic / Re: Silkroad 2.0 on: December 12, 2013, 02:37:18 PM

Yeah I'd say that's a given with the vacuum-sealing, but most people tend to believe its dog-proof as well.  That's a dangerous misconception to entertain.

Receiving mail from Canada is also fairly routine but then again so is receiving the occasional piece of mail from the Netherlands or the UK.  There are ingenius stealth methods out there these days, there are some who even profited heavily on the original SR selling their own original stealth formulas.

As long as there's prohibition there will always be ingenious people trying to capitalise on this by creating inventive ways to ship things, but they'll never be 100% safe. Vacuum packing isn't going to stop xrays as well, so I think people who believe they're safe with it are just being naive, and as you say, it's a dangerous misconception to entertain, but that's sometimes the price you pay for naivety and ignorance.

Now at SilkRoad2.0 will be just ppl who want to be caught or want to screw someone.

Wrong, it's already thriving. DPR just successfully overcame a long DDoS attack by seizing the attacker's db. I'm sure he had help but it's a milestone.  Business as usual for SR at the moment.

Hopefully the new DPR wont be as foolish as the old one.

Some speculate that this DPR is the original, the one who agreed to be bought out by Ross Ulbricht several years ago after he created the first SR.  He was reputed to be much more low-key.

Was there definitely an original, or was that just something he put out there as misinformation?

Thanks for the reply.

So...I'm wondering: are you just afraid to call yourself an anarchist? This label "Libertarian Socialist" sounds extremely funny to me  Grin (I havent heard it before)

It is anarchism. No, I'm not afraid to call myself an anarchist, but most people have a popular misconception of anarchists/anarchism as complete chaos/armageddon and propagated by these ignorant faux punk-looking fuck da establishment types (but yes, fuck tha government Grin).

I see. I don't want to troll you about it, but doesn't this constitute "being afraid of calling oneself an anarchist" a little bit? Wink

I'm curious, because have sort of the opposite approach towards this. I will call myself an anarchist when talking to someone and then try to ruin their misconceptions about it by not throwing any molotov cocktails at them  Grin

As a critique I would try get the wallet syncing problems sorted as it's damaging the rep of the coin. I've seen many people unable to get their coins in their wallets even after the 'fix' was offered. Thanks.

coffee is legal, why the hell would you want to use bitcoins for that

Not everybody uses their bitcoins for illegal purposes. Some people want to use it as a mainstream currency, and you should be able to buy whatever you want with it.

I don't think that's true, but the black market use did help and quicken its rise, and the publicity - good or bad - from the use on Silk Road etc did bring it into the mainstream's attention.

This is exactly it. Any publicity is good publicity. All we need is the mainstream's attention, and the benefits of cryptocurrencies will become self-evident.

Well, silk road and other illegal market did have an impact on bitcoin and cryptocurrencies as such. However, I dont believe that they would be useless without.
They simply improved the velocity of crypto growth.

Also true. Without Bitcoins use in SR it definitely would've had a slower growth.
