19621  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Acorn M.2 FPGA based GPU Accelerator on: July 11, 2018, 05:09:09 PM
So just looking at the materials involved... what drives the price and how long before we see competition bringing lower prices?  I imagine R&D, labor/personnel, maybe some factor for intellectual property is driving the current price.  I also seem to recall somewhere that current prices are very low as it is with sales being made near cost.  Then again, cost for that initial R&D can be quite high and cost for competitors -might- be much lower. The m.2 technology is well known with various articles on the topic.  My guess is more pressure from Samsung and companies like Halong...  Bitmain may remain in their comfort zone... or not.

GPUHoarder said pcie 3.0 versions of the acorns are being worked on.

Why aren’t all cars on the road lambos?

PCIe 3.0 Chips are significantly more expensive, this is the right place on the cost/value curve today. But it is being worked on.

I'd guess there will be performance improvements with V2 with stable or slightly higher prices.

Imo it doesn't have to be cheap, but it must beat ROI and risk/reward of buying more GPUs and the added cost of extra/more expensive mobo and cpus.

I have reduced my gpus  so much  that  I would not need  to do anything but  buy these and drop them in.

I have multiple boards  that will do what I need to do.

I am mining btg   which may do better or not since it is the 144.5 algo

I am mining  x16r  which has been said to work better.

There are finally  a few photos.

and the parent company formally  announced it is affiliated with the new company.

So this should be nice to see working in the field.
19622  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Acorn M.2 FPGA based GPU Accelerator on: July 11, 2018, 04:55:03 PM

And for all to see that  the date is today the 11th of july 2018

sooooo my concerns were 100% valid  and until today  they were not addressed.

To op thanks for addressing them.

Just because you personally did not receive a direct reply, does not make your concerns 100% valid. David Stanfill is GPUHoarder. That's been confirmed by him multiple times. He is a co-founder of Squirrels, LLC. He has publicly stated many times that Squirrelsresearch.com is endorsed and a sister company to Squirrels. This was all public knowledge for quite a while now. So the press release is nice, but this wasn't rocket science.

I clearly explained the problem today he  fixed it today with the press release.

The correct direction of endorsement is now established.  Ie  the corportation/LLC of airsquirrels.com  claims to be the parent company of squirrelsresearch.com

While you may think  is was done correctly before the press announcement made today it was not.

Much to the credit of  David Stanfill and airsquirrels.com  as soon as I voiced my concern in a clear manner  they fixed it.

I would like to tell him I apologize for my lack of clarity  about my concerns.

It is settled and to gpuhoarder thanks again.

There is no doubt that airsquirrels.com is real and well established.  opened up in 2009

I have yet to find that they endorse squirrelsresearch.com   opened up in 2018

webutation.net of airsquirrels.com

So at op    is it possible  for airsquirrels.com

to mention  it is the parent company of

squirrelsresearch.com

Mystery solved:  https://globenewswire.com/news-release/2018/07/11/1535982/0/en/Squirrels-Inc-Expands-to-Support-New-Global-Hardware-Efforts.html

Quote from: http://squirrelsresearch.com/about/

Quote
Squirrels Research Labs (SQRL) is a sister company of Squirrels LLC under the Squirrels Inc. umbrella. SQRL focuses on hardware development and research projects that contribute to the overall success of the Squirrels brand.

Quote from: http://www.airsquirrels.com/about-us/

Quote
The founders of Squirrels LLC joined forces in 2008 to form a company called Napkin Studio. Together, they released one of the first 100 apps in the App Store. Napkin Studio created several successful apps and completed contract work for partners from coast to coast.

The company took a new direction in 2012 when it released two of the first screen-mirroring apps – Reflector and AirParrot -- into a large untapped market. The apps were a hit, and Napkin Studio became Squirrels LLC as the founders and employees focused their efforts on wireless collaboration and presentation technology.

and this is exact what is my problem  and why I have been posting here over and over and over and over

this proves squirrelsresearch.com  claims to belong to airsquirrels.com

but it does not prove airsquirrels.com  acknowledged that is true.

squirrelsresearch.com  is the company I question  They claim this

they came to exist this year 2018
the op gpuhoarder started this year 2018

the good legit company   airsquirrels.com

is much older   like 2010 or something.

This... looks amazing! I do have my doubts, considering the number of scams out there. Hopefully you will take escrow BTC payments or at least PayPal.  Wink

Currently, they accept ACH/wire and crypto. PayPal took themselves out of the picture - claiming chargebacks (PayPal does not like crypto). Squirrels is working on other payment options. I don't think forum escrow will be one, though.
So no paypal
No escrow

No cc?

but this is very easily a scam .

I am  not saying it is a scam and I want the gear as much as anyone else.
But where is the protection  for the buyer?
the answer is there is no protection here.
Early in the thread I offered to escrow first batch.  Free of charge!

I will offer assistance to op at no charge.
If op needs a pre order run I will do it at no fees for me.
I no longer do escrow but for this project I offer free escrow other then the tx fee.
At op do we need intel CPUs ?
Are higher end CPUs better?

and this is a less then satisfactory answer

Can you clarify what you’re offering?
Higher end CPUs can be interesting, but system memory matters more if you’re trying to use the accelerator with CPU***

as free escrow service is pretty much as  clear as possible.
And the render is pretty but still no real proof of concept.

It’s a picture - touched up because of production PCB color and to remove FPGA specific info,  but an actual picture Smiley

I know you’re trying to watch out for everyone here, and it is appreciated.

It is frustrating to constantly be thrown up as some kind of back alley deal man by you, as someone who has run a multi-million dollar company for coming up on 10 years, who has gone on camera, met people in the group in person, shown them all our hardware and labs, taken phone calls, posted our address and contact info, been vouched for by OhGodAGirl/OhGodACompany, amongst many other things to show how legitimate and serious we are in this space. I suppose the joint press release with Xilinx soon won’t help you either.

We have over 40 people in house and 75 people working directly with us on this specific project. I appreciate your offer of escrow, and presales, but we are an established company - we don’t really need someone else to run our store for us. In addition, orders pay for production and production of this many things has to be scheduled and forecast far in advance. We already have millions of our own dollars  out on this project to source all the components that are nearly impossible to procure right now.

The Acorn  exists, it has been tested and verification made of claims. I’m not going to go above and beyond trying to “sell” every skeptic for preorders. Skeptics will be fine once thousands of people have these in their hands. I’ve been very clear on how it works, other devs can easily run the numbers and simulate or confirm.

What doesn’t exist?

1. Production volumes of product - we need preorder volumes to know how many to fully ramp, though slots are scheduled and initial volumes in. A few hundred are being produced for end of July for 3rd party dev and reviewer testing - these are expensive, north of $400 in small batch.

2. Full implementations of the miner UI,  designed but needs added to our underlying miner core.

3. Fully tuned implementations for future supported algorithms we discuss.

4. Production ready mining software, driver installation, and the software polish to make it plug and play.

5. Final production heatsinks, due to ongoing work to have the best possible thermal management and therefore performance. We already have the largest power supply I know of for these chips.

What does exist?

1. A dozen or so development verification devices, we hand build a few more here and there.

2. All the parts and components excluding bare PCBs to build 10k+ of these, to ensure initial production ramp is smooth.

3. Locked in supply chain and manufacturing timeslots for upcoming production.

4. The base SQRL Miner core as well as verification and testing tools with a developer UI.

5. Initial heatsinks that work but could still be improved.

Good I finally got a direct reply for my concerns.

My research has shown airsquirrels.com to be a fully legit company.

I would have zero issues using airsquirrels.com

I have heard you on YouTube say you are a subset of airsquirrels.com

And all I am looking for is the airsquirrels.com  website to show it is the parent company of squirrelsresearch.com

https://store.airsquirrels.com/

takes cc and paypal and has been in business for years

@philipma1957, run airsquirrels.com ('parent' company) through WhoIs.

I did that and they have been around a longer time.

I am still trying to be sure the two are linked.

I prefer to not have to do this but such is crypto mining.

Airsquirrels checks out at 100 on webutation.net

And most ratings are at 100

So I am a lot more happy with airsquirrels.com

Well they look nice.
19630  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 8th Alt coin thread. Or what to do now that asics are all over the place. on: July 11, 2018, 01:32:42 AM

while smaller coins/algos are being taken over by fpgas, lux forked in attempt to fight them off but it seems to be useles.Latest bitstream is for 0x token, currently they are doing about x10-x15 higher speed then 1 1080ti on way lower power ofc

Yeah, but that FPGA costs $4000 (correction - might cost $6000 now, as Xilinx is no dummy about repricing in the face of a sudden increase in demand).

So, about 5x (to 9x) the price for 10x-15x the speed. Not nearly as impressive when put into context.

And if  an asic is built  it further damages that coin price.

Right now  no tech  for oddball coins has much promise.

all pow is based on converting electrical power into coins.

If gpus are going to be wiped out  only cheap power works to make profit.

Gpus had lots going for them  ie they have other uses and true resale.

asic and fpga will not have this.

gpus were available from real sellers world wide with real warranties.

ASics and FPGA don't do this

I still see hope for gpus  I see a rendering rental- combined with a render pow coin as a possibility .

I agree with everything except for FPGAs not having any other use or resale value. If the proper software/bitstreams either exists or can be made, then you can use FPGAs for all sorts of useful things. The resale market is going to be much smaller, but they will still be of interest to people doing specialized work.

As for GPUs, I really hope either rendering or some type of protein folding research becomes a worthy option for GPUs since they're really good at it (at least the high end models).

If there is no mining, the FPGA will be flooded into the market. Compared to mining, specific FPGA has smaller usage.

I see this pretty much as the problem with FPGA's  the  price has risen from 4k to 6k which is like the S9 jumping up in price from 900 Jan 2017 to 1500 Sept 2017 to 3000 in dec 2017 and then down to 440 with a coupon today.

FPGA production has never been like GPU production.  1 fpga for 100's of gpu's  maybe for 1000's

At the moment

 raven with x16r
BTG   with ebwf and 144,5 algo
 BIS

are all asic free in theory so they would be good for FPGA  but there are not a lot of coins without asic interest.

Which means FPGA  can be attacked by asics very easily.

Hopefully render rental / render pow takes off for gpus  as it is far more promising for gpus to do this.

losing GPU mining or something similar is going to kill the grassroots "marketing" if you will, of crypto. I would not be here if it was not for GPU mining for one, and I know that is also the case for many others

Won't be the first time that GPU mining "died" for the most part - consider 2014.

yep and crytpo mining sucked until gpus made a comeback.

it is pretty simple  :

more then 100 million gpus can mine at a profit even now  it is true. (profit is tiny now)

take that away and adaptation  suffers greatly.

also really hurts pc sales.
look at this pc:

HP USB Wired Keyboard with volume control

2169 usd  a pretty good pc  and when the 1080ti earn 10 a day  this would earn 20  using 2 bucks power  which meant why not buy it and think of  as a clever rebate.

18 a day is 540 a month  or payback in 4 months.  If you mined 24/7 with it.

I still Have 1 of three left  killing this off was moron stupid.  Asic and fpga just needed to wait for a while more to let the base of miners grow bigger.

if they stayed away til 2019 or even later every one of us including them would have earned far more $$.
