21  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [SKY] Skycoin Launch Announcement on: June 25, 2015, 07:42:22 PM
I agree with Skycoin's analysis 100%. I'd be curious to see some links or references on the Depression era numbers on deaths/disappearances. While well aware of the NRA, centralized control of the economy with price controls and production quotas, packing the supreme court with more judges, confiscation of gold, and devaluing the dollar, the AAA is new along with the suppression of rioting, though the Bonus Vets Protest is well known, and the military raid on it.

My hesitation to invest in Skycoin has been due to the failure to answer relevant technical questions on hardware, setting up nodes for remote access by LAN, problems with the client, and if the IPO is still even open. I've been enthusiastic about Skycoin and closely following it since the thread started, but I'm seeing a lot of problems with execution from a business standpoint which will completely discourage broader adoption if they continue. The technical expertise is very well covered and I'm completely aligned with the goals, philosophy, and view of the current and upcoming global situation. I have also seen a failure to follow through with announced plans, like posting the 300 pages of mesh networking and radio information, and a general lack of interest in encouraging open participation in the project.

Looked over site. comments below:

I don't see any info about the team. Site looks kinda like a  spammy internet marketing" site, a lot of hype, exclamation points, highlighted and colored fonts.

Equity cost works out to .001% equity per BTC.

A patent troll in the making?

"Legal Notice: This document describes inventions by NewGamePlus Inc. that are patent-pending with the USPTO."

They are also planning on charging a subscription fee to use the client:

"Software Licensing

The Qointum client software is available under the following license types:

a Personal License which is free but limited by revenue restrictions
a Pro License which requires a subscription (see Pricing)"

Tech details and quotes above are at https://wiki.qointum.com/design/dev/ . Looks like patent applications need to be searched to see if any assholes are trying to patent things which should be public domain. They have 1 month from posting or publishing to apply for a patent.

Guess you're not a regular Nxt user. Still it should be simple. Nxt does not need to be installed. Go to https://nxtforum.org/nrs-releases/
and choose 1.4.18. I have had problems with 1.5.9 as well. Verify the hash with something like onlinemd5.com and extract the folder to your
desktop. Double click run.bat and leave the command window open until blockchain is fully dled. Depending how fast your computer and
connection is it could take a couple hours to half a day. Open a browser and go to http://localhost:7876/. Type your passphrase and there
really should not be any single problem.

I believe the problem with 1.5.9 is you have to update to java 8. Get java 8 then "install" 1.5.9.

Thanks for the tips. Yes, found NXT wallet 2.2.0 installer, did a clean install back to NXT NRS version 1.4.8, waiting for the blockchain to download. Looking forward to Sia launch. I think it's a sleeper with a lot of potential as well.
25  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage - Working Beta - Launches June 7th, 2015 on: May 28, 2015, 06:44:36 PM
I am unable to send Sianotes and message to redeem on NXT Wallet, get message "Feature not available" in NXT wallet, Windows 7, client 1.5.9, wallet 1.3 .

There's not much we can do about that, but maybe the nxt devs can help you?

Things seem to work fine for 1.4.18.

Tried using online wallets listed on nxt.org site - one requires registration, the other won't let me sign on with passphrase only, seems to want some other ID from wallet, the third link goes to a site which does not show a wallet anywhere.

Tried downgrading NXT client install from 1.5.9 to 1.4.18. Now the NSR server crashes when I try to launch wallet. I'll probably have to manually clear everything off the computer for NXT and do a clean install. I estimate I'm already 4 hours into trying to redeem these Sianotes overall, between reading on how to do it, downloading, installing, and creating the key, and trying to send the transaction to redeem the notes.

I do onsite computer service as my main business, and can say for a fact not one of my customers would be able to use this for any kind of business.

31  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Sia: Siacoin (scn) and Siastock (stk) on: July 20, 2014, 09:49:25 PM
Hi Taek, When will sia do the second round IPO?

Buy Sia on Nxt AE.

Is there a deadline to receive the Sianotes from sending to the BTC address in the OP? I had a problem with NXT after an update so I didn't send a NXT address to receive the Sianotes, and am currently migrating wallets to a new computer. I'm not planning to sell anytime soon, so I haven't been in a hurry to receive them, but I want to make sure I don't miss a deadline to have them included in a Genesis block or otherwise receive a distribution.
32  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Crypti | Release June | 100% POS | New Source on: June 29, 2014, 05:42:41 PM
15% to go into your pocket and 10% for development ?   why so greedy ?

And why don't you just invest your BTC at the IPO to get stakes ? (How would we know if you didn't invest another 100BTC and got a final balance of 50% of the total coins? )

I really don't understand why everyone keeps throwing out the word greedy. As an investor, you are being rewarded with stake in the currency at the early stages for your support of future development. But, the current developers are responsible for ALL current development up to this point on their own dime. I think the people who put in the sweat and tears to make this thing a reality deserve some credit here. Without the development team, nothing exists.

Greed on our part isn't the issue here. Asking us to work for months for free with no compensation so that you can profit off of a product we created is greed. I don't think there is any stronger definition of the word. If you think the amount we are holding back for payment is too high, I understand your complaint and disagree.

I'm not trying to be offensive here and I have been very patient, but at this point my answer is simply this; If you disagree with the distribution model, which we have been very open to adjusting and are doing so based on community feedback, then walk. We can't please everyone, we are happy with where we are at, and if 1 or 2 possible investors have to walk for us to launch in the way that we think is equitable, then I guess that is the reality.

We have discussed the distribution ad nauseam in this thread already and explained our reasoning behind the numbers we chose. I also recently posted an update to how we will be scaling the 10% amount based on BTC earned. I think that is as far as we are willing and able to budge on this matter and I think it is a good compromise.

As per your other note, we didn't make it a binding rule that a developer couldn't invest in the launch as far as I know. I wish I had 100 BTC sitting around to invest in anything, lol. I personally have chosen not to invest anything additional because I don't want the coin to end up in the hands of a small number of people and also because I don't have extra holdings right now to put towards the launch. That being said, I can't control anyone else's actions and they will have to speak for themselves.

I totally agree with greXX, get involved or not, it totally up to you.  nobody but yourself should responsable for your investment.
And, somebody here should pay for your tuition on your investment.

The term 'greed' is typically used as a tool for emotional manipulation, used by one person or group to control another. It is devoid of informational content in that there is no objective definition of what is 'greedy'. How much of an expected return on investment constitutes greed? 1%, 5%, 10%, 100%, 1000% or more? At what point does it become greed? At what percent reserve of shares for developers does it become greed? .1%, 1%, 5%, 10%, 20%, or 50%? I would be interested in seeing a consensus agreement on where we draw the line, so we can have an objective definition of 'greed'. As far as I'm concerned, if you can't put a number on it and objectively define something, then it doesn't exist - it is just non-scientific, emotional, irrational psychobabble.

This is great! Did you have to hunt down and patch together APIs for all these different currencies? I was wondering if there is a data feed for all these different assets to use in a portfolio manager, or maybe such a crypto portfolio manager exists already.

yes, we are fetching APIs of 27 exchanges every 30 secs

and yes, we offering free portfolio for all 300+ cryptocurrencies on our website and as apps for Android and iPhone

in case you need an API, it's right here https://www.cryptonator.com/api

This is F'ing awesome! Thanks!

35  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: June 03, 2014, 04:49:23 PM
Please correct me if there is a single file download to run counterparty, i.e. the wallet software.

There isn't. But as I understand developers could package node-webkit version of counterwallet quite trivially. Such a build could come from anyone really but coming from main counterparty team would be best.

I think it would be a positive thing in relation to the time it would take. People can have a strong interest to a native app on their desktop- especially electrum like lightweight clients. more than visiting website, it can feel more secure or local to them (even if the app is essentially browser window in a form)  Counterparty can then market a lightweight win/osx/linux wallet being available.

Yes, this what is plan. First step is to make a Chrome App, this will be the lightweight client. Because in fact lightweight wallet and web wallet are same thing (the only difference is the UI hosted on server or locally). After that for heavy wallet we have a bunch of work on Counterblockd to make it installable on every computer (the ideal is to have no more dependencies than counterpartyd).
The urgency for now I think it's to have an heavy wallet. For that I really need to find time to work on BoottleXCP. I need one or two days to update it. I hope this week-end if I finish "My bets" pages before. After that I need also 3 or 4 days to make BoottleXCP light with pyrpcwallet. But is less urgent because for light wallet there is CW.

Is there any update here? I think a node-webkit build of CounterWallet like CarbonWallet would be attractive to some users (plus you can market as having native win/osx/linux lightweight wallets). I tried to build myself unsuccessfully, but I think for someone who has knowledge of the project it should be easy right?

This would be good. A group of us are developing a dual or quad core ARM based secure coinbox with key switch or USB key to enable spends and configuration. It runs Bitcoin and PoS coins for always-on operation and is accessible over the user's LAN. We just got a nice little quad core ARM board with 8 GB eMMC, SD slot and 1 Gb DDR2 to run Ubuntu.  We have some coins running on R-Pi, to port over to the quad core board when ready. R-Pi maxes out with a single coin.

Hello,

Just trying to install/compile directly on OSx. After a couple of minor adjustments which I'll post later, everything worked fine on the initial ./install.sh, run.sh except for a final error about a missing header file.

Thanks for any suggestions...

Try "apt-get install libgmp-dev" or "sudo apt-get install libgmp-dev" first.

On Debian,

*** WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE DONE ALL THE PREP TO RUN ./setup.sh ****

1.  In the bash script skycoin/compile/install-gvm, there is a curl command to get the gvm-installer.  It looks like it piped to the parent?  Anyway, it was dropping out with syntax error.  So instead, I copied the gvm-installer file from the repository to skycoin/compile/gvm-installer.sh and ran it directly (./gvm-installer.sh)

Summary:
copy file in  https://raw.github.com/moovweb/gvm/master/binscripts/gvm-installer to /skycoin/compile/gvm-installer.sh

in skycoin/compile/install-gvm.sh, comment out the curl and read the gvm-installer file that was just created.
# bash < <(curl -s https://raw.github.com/moovweb/gvm/master/binscripts/gvm-installer)
./gvm-installer.sh

That takes care of getting gvm installed.
----------------------------------------
NEXT
install 3 more packages:
apt-get install mercurial
apt-get install bison
apt-get instal libgmp3-dev

NEXT
Add the following lines to the end of your .bashrc (or whereever you think convenient)
export GOPATH=$HOME/.gvm/gos/go1.2/bin
export PATH=$PATH:$GOPATH

Also,

Since a few people seem to be having issues getting SkyCoin running, I'll say what I did. Note: I foolishly didn't take notes while doing this, so something might be missing. I tried using the "setup.sh" script, but it messed with my .bashrc and seemed to need gvm which it apparently failed to install. I choose not to use gvm since it seemed needless and messy, and not to mess with linking directories around: I just added another GOPATH entry.

Setup guide:
Since I haven't reviewed all the code, I'm not going to run in on a computer I care about. Thus I setup a virtual machine (I choose linux mint in VirtualBox). I take no responsibility for what all this does to your computer and/or network. Take the proper precautions!

I installed (via sudo apt-get install) git, mercurial, libgmp-dev, libc-dev. I also installed Go 1.2.1 from here: https://code.google.com/p/go/downloads/list (You need at least 1.2, and my package manager only had 1.1)
I setup a GOPATH environment variable (http://golang.org/doc/code.html#GOPATH) in my .bashrc with 2 paths (colon separated), one for third party libs (the first entry on GOPATH where Go get puts stuff be default), and one for the skycoin repo. You can put them both in one if you want.

If you install Go in a non standard location, you need to set $GOROOT.

Add go to the $PATH in .bashrc: "export PATH=$PATH:$GOROOT/bin"

create the path: $GOPATH/src/github.com/skycoin/
and in there "git clone https://github.com/skycoin/skycoin.git"

This gives you a path "$GOPATH/src/github.com/skycoin/skycoin" (Note the skycoin/skycoin, you must have both directories)

In there, "go get -u" to download/update all dependencies.

"./run.sh -web-interface=true" will get you a web server you can view at http://127.0.0.1:6402 for the UI.

Currently if I run the UI it keeps printing panics, and does not seem to be working, but at least it runs shows a UI and prints lots of things.

If you follow this, please let me know if it works or need and changes/improvements.

There's an alpha client available to try at https://github.com/skycoin/skycoin along with instructions. I installed on Ubuntu 12.04 on  Virtualbox on a Windows XP 64 bit machine. Two others in our group have it running on Ubuntu on Macs. I had to install some extra dependencies beyond what is in the instructions.

...ask whether it makes sense to hold an asset that currently has a 10 % yearly deflation rate (about 1.3 million new Bitcoins per year and about 12.5 bitcoins in existence) when there are more efficient alternatives.

Please take it apart!

I think you meant inflation rate. I would very much like to hold an asset with a 10% deflation rate. This would mean it is appreciating in value by 10% per year if the purchasing power reflects the decrease in quantity.
