This week's top story
NavCoin Core 4.6.0 Released

After a successful testing cycle of the Release Candidate, NavCoin Core 4.6.0 has been officially released. This new version of NavCoin Core adds many new features including a graphical interface for the Community Fund, mnemonic seed phrase support and a patch to fix the bug which caused the recent network issues.

In total 26 Pull Requests were reviewed and merged into master for version 4.6.0 marking the culmination of the last 3 months of work on NavCoin Core.

While most of the changes are cosmetic or new features and there is no consensus change in this version, it is recommended to upgrade to 4.6.0 as soon as practical so you receive the patch to fix the Community Fund Payment Request block reorganisation issue.

You can download the latest version from the NavCoin Wallet Downloads page.

NavCoin NEXT Mobile Announced

Seyhan announces a mobile version of the NEXT Wallet, NavCoin 4.6.0 gets closer to release and the GitHub Bounty program is brought online.

This week's top story
NavCoin NEXT Mobile Announced

Lead Developer of the NEXT Wallet Seyhan Akdeniz has announced the NEXT Wallet is being developed for Android and iOS. The news of the mobile wallet comes after his recent efforts to enable the NEXT desktop wallet to run in lite mode. Porting the wallet for use on mobile seems like the next natural progression for the project now that it is capable of sending and receiving NAV without needing to store or validate the entire blockchain.

Additional to receiving, storing and sending NAV, the wallet will be able to both browse and create Community Fund proposals and payment requests.

You can read more about the NEXT Mobile project on the NavCommunity site.

NavCoin 4.6.0 Release Candidate

This week the Release Candidate of NavCoin Core 4.6.0 is ready for testing, NavCoin Engineer Alex V talks with Binance in their AMA series and more.

This week's top story
NavCoin Core 4.6.0 Release Candidate

The newest version of NavCoin Core (v4.6.0) is nearly ready to go. All the features which will be included in v4.6.0 have been merged to the master branch. There is one outstanding bug fix that the core developers are looking to include in v4.6.0 alongside anything that is discovered while testing the release candidate. If you want to build and test the release candidate, you can do so from Pull Request #444.

If you don’t have a build environment setup but you want to help test the release candidate, the core developers will publish the built binaries to the pull request once they have been compiled — keep an eye on the PR.

There are a lot of great improvements being released in v4.6.0. Some of the major features to be included are;

Community Fund User Interface — There will be a new tab in the core wallet for browsing and voting on community fund proposals and payment requests.

Staking Accumulation — There is now the ability to specify a different address to accumulate staking rewards to with the -stakingaddress argument.

Mnemonic Seed Phrase Support — Ability to export and import master private keys as mnemonic phrases to backup or create wallets.

Along with another 12 closed pull requests which are detailed in the 4.6.0 release notes.

Once testing is completed and any discovered bugs fixed, the release will be formally published and the announcement will be made on navcoin.org.

This week's top story
NavPay 4.6.0 Released

Along with the backend upgrade, a new version of the wallet has been released. You will need to update to version 4.6.0 to see your cold staking balance in NavPay if you used it to generate your spending keys.

If you’re on Android, the update should come automatically from the Google Play store within the next 48 hours.

NEXT Lite Wallet RC1 Released

The NEXT Lite Wallet RC1 has been released, progress has been made patching NavPay for cold staking and NavCoin is now on social media platform Cent.

This week's top story
NEXT Lite Wallet RC1 Released

The first release candidate (RC1) of the NEXT Lite wallet has been officially released. For those who are unfamiliar with the project, NEXT is a modern desktop wallet interface originally built for NavCoin and which now has support for other cryptocurrencies. Previously the NEXT wallet needed to be run as a full node which requires downloading the entire blockchain of the cryptocurrencies you want to use. The NEXT developers have now enabled the wallet to run in “lite” mode which doesn’t require the full blockchain to be downloaded. While the wallet looks to a remote server for the blockchain, it still retains control of its private keys so it can create and sign transactions before broadcasting them to be relayed. Any attempt to tamper with the transaction in transit would invalidate the signature and it would be rejected by the rest of the network. Behind the scenes NEXT uses the same open source framework as NavPay. These libraries have been well tested and reviewed making them a solid starting point for any lite wallet.

The NEXT Lite Wallet has been in public beta for a number of weeks and the development team behind it is now confident the remaining bugs have been ironed out. They’ve added some additional security measures and community fund features to the latest version and published it as RC1. To read the full change log and get the latest version of the wallet visit the NavCommunity blog.

NavDroid StakeBox Public Beta

The NavDroid StakeBox has been released for public peer review and the NavCoin Knowledge Base is now open source and community driven.

This week's top story
NavDroid StakeBox Public Beta

The NavCoin network is secured by Proof of Stake which is a form of network consensus that requires only a minimal amount of computing power. There is no requirement to have specialised computer chips or expensive mining rigs since increased computing power does not lead to increased mining rewards. At the beginning of 2017 the NavPi was released, a Raspberry Pi computer the size of a credit card, loaded with the software and interface to participate in securing the NavCoin network. Since then, the NavCoin blockchain has grown and the onboard memory of the NavPi struggled to keep up with storing all the block headers. Since then, NavCoin Core has been looking for alternative low powered devices to take over the reigns from the NavPi.

A couple of months ago work began on creating the NavDroid interface for the Odroid XU4. The beta version of this software is now available to the public for download. The software provides the basic functionality for mining on the XU4 device; Send, Receive, Transaction Lists, Community Fund Voting, Encrypt, Backup and Restore.

The software is built with NodeJS and Angular, and fully open source. We encourage any web developers or designers who would like to get involved in working with blockchain to try the software, test it and help to fix bugs or improve the user interface. What we’ve released today is simply a starting point for the community to run with.

Until the software has been fully peer reviewed and any bugs fixed, we recommend using the NavDroid with caution and not using it as your primary mining device.

You can install the repositories on an existing Odroid by cloning the software from GitHub and installing with NPM, or if you want to download the image join the community on discord to get the download link.

There are two main code repositories;

NavCoin Express is the NodeJS back end server that interacts with the daemon and provides the API to the front end.

https://github.com/Encrypt-S/navcoin-express

NavCoin Angular is the Angular front end web server that provides the web interface for controlling your NavCoin wallet.

https://github.com/Encrypt-S/navcoin-angular

If you find any bugs or want to make any improvements, please create an issue or a pull request on the appropriate repository and join the community on discord to discuss.

ZeroCT Phase Two Testnet Launched

The fully featured ZeroCT implementation has been launched on the testnet and NavCoin has been listed on the Equicex Exchange & Debit Card platform.

This week's top story
ZeroCT Phase Two Testnet Launched

NavCoin’s new on-chain private transaction protocol ZeroCT has reached another major milestone with the deployment of its second phase to the testnet. The addition of non-denominational RSA accumulators and confidential transactions means the testnet now meets the design specification described in the ZeroCT white paper. With the main protocol implementation complete, the efforts shift to review, refinement, testing and interface design.

It seems the protocol is gaining some attention as development progresses. The ZeroCT white paper has been included in zk Capital’s newsletter which you can read here;

https://zkcapital.substack.com/p/this-month-in-blockchain-research

If you want to try ZeroCT, you can build the binaries from the source code on GitHub or download the compiled binaries directly from the community site;

https://build.nav.community/zeroct1

The more people who can review the code and test the wallet, the faster and more thorough this process will be. You don’t have to be a developer to participate in the beta testing, just try it out and if anything doesn’t work as expected log an issue on GitHub and chat with us on Discord.

If you’re new to NavCoin or the ZeroCT protocol, a good place to start is with this two part article series that gives context around how the protocol was designed and what makes it unique;

ZeroCT Phase Two Approaches Testnet Release

Phase two of ZeroCT with Confidential Transactions is nearly ready to be deployed to the testnet, NavCoin’s Community Fund pays for carbon credits to offset the networks power consumption and the NavDroid is nearing completion.

This week's top story
ZeroCT Phase Two Approaches Testnet Release

Implementation of NavCoin’s new on chain privacy method ZeroCT is well under way and is fast approaching its next major milestone. The first phase was released on the testnet some weeks ago and is currently available for review and feedback on GitHub. In this first phase, the implementation is using multiple denomination based accumulators more similar to the original Zerocoin protocol, with the additional features like anonymous identities and the ability to transact within the accumulator as described in the ZeroCT white paper.

While phase one undergoes testing and review, Alex has been busy working on phase two and is nearly ready to deploy it to the testnet. This second phase includes confidential transactions and allows for private staking as well as regular transactions. This means the transaction amounts will no longer be visible on the blockchain and there will no longer be a requirement for denomination based accumulators.

From Alex’s testing so far, the performance of the implementation is looking good. Verifying a transaction takes ~450ms, sending a transaction takes ~650ms and staking takes ~2s.

Once the second phase is on the testnet there is going to be a lot of testing and peer review required to make sure that it operates as expected before launching this new protocol on the mainnet. The more people who can review the code and test the protocol, the faster and more thorough this process will be. If you want to get involved in testing and code reviews, please join us on GitHub and Discord.

BlockchainNZ Talk & NavCoin Meetup

This week NavCoin’s Co-Founder Craig talked at the first Blockchain NZ event of the year, the first inaugural NavCoin Meetup in Auckland was held and the Spanish translation of the NavCoin website is live.

This week's top story
BlockchainNZ Talk & NavCoin Meetup

The Blockchain Association of NZ invited NavCoin’s Co-Founder Craig MacGregor to speak at their first speaker series event of the year in Auckland, New Zealand. The talk was held at the GridAKL event space in the innovation precinct of downtown Auckland. Craig’s presentation covered the full breadth of NavCoin from its values and how it started to what the protocol is and what the future holds. The presentation was well received and was followed by an energetic Q&A session from the engaged audience. If you want to check out the presentation it is available for download here.

After the BlockchainNZ event, attending NavCoin Core team and some of the BlockchainNZ members headed down to the Jack Tar on the waterfront for the NavCoin meetup. The meetup was more of a casual social event, but it marks the first of many NavCoin and Blockchain meetups NavCoin Core are hoping to host in Auckland this year to help spread awareness about the NavCoin protocol and community.

NEXT Lite Wallet Preview Available

The NavCoin Community is a hive of activity this week with NEXT launching their lite wallet preview, the Bulletproofs Library added to the ZeroCT, three articles published about NavCoin and a BTC/NAV pair being added on NovaExchange.

This week's top story
NEXT Lite Wallet Preview Available

The NEXT Wallet developers have released the public alpha version of their lite wallet for NavCoin. NEXT first launched in June 2018 as an alternate interface for NavCoin Core. Since then NEXT has added support for multiple cryptocurrencies running as full nodes including LTC, DASH, PIVX and more. Updates have included advanced features for NavCoin such as community fund integration, news and a marketplace.

This latest release includes the capability to send and receive NavCoin without needing to download and validate gigabytes of blockchain data. After creating a wallet and securing it with a passphrase you can instantly start using NavCoin. The private keys never leave your device and signed transactions are sent to the broadcast server from the wallet which are unable to be tampered with in transit.

The lite wallet capability is still being tested by the development team, so if you want to check it out and participate in the public beta test then please download the latest version and join the navcoin discord server to give your feedback.

As with all pre-release software that is being publicly tested, be sensible with how much NAV you move there until a stable release is available.

For further information please see the NEXT Lite Wallet (v1.1.3) release notes.

Community News: NavCoin Core 4.5.2 Hard Fork Success

The NavCoin hard fork scheduled for last weekend was a success, make sure you update to NavCoin Core 4.5.2 if you haven’t already done so. There’s also been progress made on all active projects throughout the NavCoin Community. Keep up to date with this week’s Community News!

This week's top story
Hard Fork Success

The scheduled hard fork at block 2882875 to mitigate an issue with the Community Fund payment requests proceeded without incident. If you haven’t already done so, please update to NavCoin Core 4.5.2 immediately to avoid spending or staking disruption.

The full details of the issue have been written up to the NavCoin Notice announcing the release of the 4.5.2 version on NavCoin.org

https://navcoin.org/en/notices/2019-02-12-navcoin-4-5-2-hard-fork

If you missed the memo and are now updating after the fork has occurred, there are some additional steps you might need to take to make sure you’re on the correct chain. After you’ve updated to 4.5.2, open your NavCoin Core wallet and wait for it to sync with the network. Once it’s fully synced, compare your last block with the latest block on the NavExplorer. If they are the same, you are on the correct chain and nothing else needs to be done. If they are different, you will need to either re-sync or bootstrap the blockchain to get back on the correct chain.

If you’re not sure how to update your wallet, please check out this knowledge base article; How to Update your NavCoin Core Wallet.

If you need to bootstrap your wallet and you’re not sure how, please check out this knowledge base article; How to Bootstrap your Core Wallet.

If you have trouble with any of this, please join the discord community for further assistance.

You can download version 4.5.2 from the downloads section of navcoin.org or directly from the NavCoin Core GitHub release.

I don't know what your math is like, but just as a warning the WP is pretty dense. We're going to release some more high level explainer articles and videos in the coming weeks.
