21  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Forcing people to choose the private key of new address in Bitcoin-Qt on: March 05, 2014, 02:51:52 PM
no.

when we think things are random, they're not even close

when things are random, we think we see patterns

this is a bad idea at every level.  there's a reason you don't even have the option to display private keys (without dropping to a console), and it's probably because of people just like you.
22  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gox Crisis Management Plan Confirmed Legitimate on: February 26, 2014, 02:34:00 AM
I don't understand how people could have withdrawn bitcoins, used transaction malleability to make gox think there was an error and resend the coins... to the tune of 750,000 BTC without mtgox noticing something was wrong... am I missing something? or is the loss related to something else?

Gross incompetence on a scale which goes magnitudes beyond what MtGox's harshest critics could ever possibly imagine.

I mean in accounting the absolute most basic reconciliation is to balance the chart of account against the actual funds.  The books say we should have x BTC and we check and yup we have x BTC.  The books say we should have y USD and yup we have y USD.  This isn't to say accounting should end there but this is the absolute most basic check and for the story to be believed they simply never did it for years.

Not to mention community out-cry for a confirmation that this most basic level of accounting was done, also for years.  How many extra-large cups of chocolate-caramel-topped heavy-creamer does a guy need to suck down before things like this stop being a concern?
23  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Havelock Investments - Exchange feedback/comments on: February 21, 2014, 02:15:53 AM
   [/tantrums]

It doesn't sound to me like anyone is forcing anything, other than forcing account holders to acknowledge that they are aware of the provided security measures, and if they are not implemented, it is through personal choice. send an email to unlock/acknowledge, and that's it. carry on as if you were normal.

[resume tantrums]

which might make sense if they sent an e-mail or notification or post on their site or anything, other than induce panic

at least havelock has a clear mission though:

if more than one fund has a price above it's ipo for more than a week, they'll just lock users out of their accounts without warning!  that'll get them to panic liquidate for sure!
24  Economy / Speculation / Re: Upcoming MtGox Movement on: February 20, 2014, 04:17:05 PM
You would have thought they would have at least tried to say something positive. It's like they're doing this on purpose now.

Who would have thought, the biggest threat to bitcoin's future would be, not government, not bankers, but one of our own exchanges?

This is not new.

MtGox under karpeles has displayed zero redeeming qualities and extreme incompetence for years now.

It was much scarier when they were the only exchange with any volume.  Thankfully, I actually managed to spot the obvious (finally) and not deal with gox for at least a year now, though I feel bad for people with their funds being held hostage by that fat turd.

He comes across as the worst type of nerd-- not particularly intelligent, or scholarly, or possessing any sort of critical thinking skills, but very gluttonous, obnoxious, arrogant, and so on.  He reminds me of Pee Wee's arch nemesis, Francis.  I just imagine him with heavy cream smeared across his face most of the day, yelling like a spoiled child when his staff reminds him that there's work to do, blaming the world around him for what is obviously his own stupidity.
25  Economy / Securities / Re: [Havelock] Bitcoin Difficulty Derivative (BDD) - Now Live! on: February 19, 2014, 05:58:00 PM
It was you!  Tongue It's okay, it just throws me into rush mode trying to get the shares exchanged before the dividend script runs - in this case, I got the shares out to you but the script didn't see it in time for you to get the dividends, hence the push-buyback of one EXCH share for the dividends that should have been paid to you.

Thinking about it again, this means that there is a small window where people could possibly have MINE shares pushed to them, sell the shares, and then those shares would not be paid dividends because of the lag-time between the shareholder list updating and the dividend push, leading to me not knowing who is missing their dividends.

So, due to this, I will hold off on all exchanges between 1155AM and until dividends are paid - this is usually around 1202 or 1203PM Havelock time.

Anyone holding EXCH shares during this time (since I'll hold off on the exchange) will still received their dividends when I buy the EXCH shares back from them.

Regaring the message, I don't have much control over how the site is laid out or the ability to put custom text there, so I'll just whine about it here to whomoever will listen  Smiley

Glad to see you're always looking for ways to improve!

So, how about the pair buy-back price?  Smiley

The original outline says the NAV/U gets a .5% per dividend deduction, but is that the NAV/U from it's list price or the NAV/U daily update?

Thanks
26  Economy / Securities / Re: [Havelock] Bitcoin Difficulty Derivative (BDD) - Now Live! on: February 19, 2014, 05:34:38 PM
Period 3, Day 3 Report - February 19, 2014

Balance Post Divs: BTC 360.36385527

Total Units: 2272 (as of Noon)

NAV/U: BTC 0.15861085

Guys, again, please don't purchase EXCH in the five minutes before Noon - even if I'm able to issue the MINE/SELL shares, this can create an issue where dividends are not paid to shares just exchanged/purchased during that time and I have to manually issue them. Thanks-

Is the daily NAV/U what buy back would pay out, or is that the base from where the dividends would be deducted?

Also, if you could post some kind of big bold reminder on the share page itself, it may remind myself and others not to buy exchange during that window.  Sorry, by the way Smiley

i'm not sure if downloading a bare "somethingsomethingSetup.exe" from a directory list is wise

probably less dangerous to shove your hand into a box of broken glass looking for a diamond
28  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: New Mt Gox Press Release - Feb 10 - they are claiming flaw in bitcoin protocol ! on: February 10, 2014, 03:15:23 PM
I'm sure at this point they realize that but are going to "punish" the community (and by extension the core developers) by suspending withdrawals until it's fixed. As "trendy" as it is to blame Gox, there's enough blame to go around to both the developers and Gox. Mistakes on both sides that have cost many people a lot of money.

If that's the case, I'd hope that the core developers would continue working on Bitcoin's problem with scaling, and not escalate the malleability thing much at all.  It sucks for the users of gox, but I think that's a lesson many of us have learned through bitcoin-- don't trust your money to a third party willy-nilly-- and particularly not one with a track-record of incompetence (especially one with no clear redeeming qualities).  Perhaps a lawsuit and pursuit of any applicable criminal penalties will ease the gox customers's suffering.
29  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: New Mt Gox Press Release - Feb 10 - they are claiming flaw in bitcoin protocol ! on: February 10, 2014, 02:48:37 PM
MtGox, continuing to prove the dunning-kruger effect

Their incompetence and arrogance really boggles the mind-- have they really not hired a consultant, ever?  They really feel like they're this brilliant powerhouse that discovered this (non)-issue?

I'm willing to bet an exploit using this very tactic was reported dozens of times, only to fall into customer support limbo.  And if that's the case, they deserve whatever lawsuit and/or criminal punishment is coming to them.

"The brillianty smart-people at MtGox have created a new way to store coins long term, in an encrypted zip file!  MtGox a hub of innovation and security!  A pillar of the community!  We discover critical security flaws only after they've made us insolvent!  HOORAY!"

Seriously this shit makes me rage so hard.  Fade into irrelevance MtGox, you served your purpose, and now you're like a herpes sore that just refuses to dry up.
30  Economy / Securities / Re: [Mpex.co] The Scientology of Bitcoin Finance? on: February 02, 2014, 09:03:10 AM
That's right: it took the USG two years of hewing and hawing to finally work up the balls to come out and plainly state "yeah, that MP guy actually knew what's what way before we figured it out, you should probably just listen to him in the future because we're 12 and what is this."

you know, i'll prefer this to michelle obama any day

the future is getting weird(er)
31  Economy / Securities / Re: [Mpex.co] The Scientology of Bitcoin Finance? on: February 02, 2014, 08:51:17 AM
to be fair, i don't think there's any particular evidence of fraud

and the more i learn of derivatives, the more i realize this setup fits the mold..

the model in my head: useful to hedge certain situations, but mostly as a way to profit from careless investors--without being deceitful (if not disingenuous).
32  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] profit switching auto-exchanging pool - middlecoin.com on: January 26, 2014, 10:01:39 AM
I can't believe people actually stay here with a diff of 1024 and constant coin switching and lack of transparency.

maybe it's because those things only matter to failed scam artists trying to grasp at straws?
33  Economy / Securities / Re: [Mpex.co] The biggest scam in bitcoin history? on: January 21, 2014, 03:58:27 PM
MP better be careful, this type of move may be considered a form of compassion, destroying the image he's worked so hard for

although it wouldn't surprise me to see this deducted as a shareholder expense
34  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin will hit $10,000 in 2014 on: January 20, 2014, 01:18:14 PM
this time last year, many of us were hoping bitcoin would be $100 a coin by the end of the year, and that turned out pretty well

i'm willing to bet the amount of money poured into buying BTC itself as an investment over the past 6 months has been matched by VC money for bitcoin startups

over this year once these projects come to fruition..

god knows
35  Economy / Securities / Re: [Mpex.co] The biggest scam in bitcoin history? on: January 14, 2014, 06:04:53 PM
Apparently I'm a victim of poor breeding (or other sassy insult)--because looking over the MPEX "manual" and site--I'm reminded of an AOL chat bot I may have thrown together in a weekend when I was 14, first learning to program with visual basic, albeit with GPG thrown in.  And lots and lots of words using cryptic language to say very very little.

I'd say the setup is designed to mesmerize potential users, making them invest lots of time (that old chestnut), and confuse them into losing their BTC; all-the-while awarding a sense of superiority.

I don't know a damn thing about options markets though, so clearly my feeble mind is unable to blah blah blah
36  Economy / Speculation / Re: This might just explains the whole Gox situation (included poll, please vote) on: January 14, 2014, 04:51:51 PM
Apparently people view MtGox less harshly than I would have thought.. maybe people new-ish to bitcoin?

If there's been a reoccurring theme to them that I've noticed over the years, it's incompetence.

Whatever happened to that shiny new trading engine, anyway?  Totally understandable though, even if "open-source software solved that like a decade ago, and an undergrad CS major could probably fix their shit in a semester."
37  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Struggling to get more than 630KH out of Sapphire 7950s on: January 11, 2014, 02:27:15 PM
changing scan time and expiry may also help with WU (saw it suggested on middlecoin thread and it does seem to make a bit of difference)

i have mine set to 1 each

frankly, what the pool says i'm getting for hashes always seemed to match up in a decent range with what cgminer reports for hashrate, regardless of the ever fluctuating WU, so i don't pay much attention to it

i might be alarmed if it was 50% of my hashrate or something like that
38  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Struggling to get more than 630KH out of Sapphire 7950s on: January 11, 2014, 02:35:02 AM
Around here, its minus 20c outside, i do an average of 670kh/s per 7950 at 50c. I did a complete ventilation system, where the outside air is brought underneath the rig and have a powerful fan both in and out. The out ventilation is at the top of the ceiling. I found that the coldest the cards are, more accepted shares are provided. Temperature management is key in mining, especially when you gain this much more. It might not be much but for each card, at the end, it shows.

man, i hear about the cold climate miners, and i have to wonder if there wouldn't be some effecient way to harness that heat instead of just pumping it outdoors

although i suppose getting the miners cold and recycling heated air are entirely opposing
39  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Struggling to get more than 630KH out of Sapphire 7950s on: January 11, 2014, 02:16:22 AM
Draino, someone mentioned latest catalyst drivers reduce artifacts. I used to get tons with high intensity, and now i just get some screen lag.  may be worth investigating.  I get stuck at -10% power, cant reduce more.  anything lower than -12% drops my hash rate by 150-200k

luckily i added a card that has 2 display ports so i don't even have to worry about it anymore, i can just let the 7950 do its thing and warm up my room during this arctic vortex haha
40  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Struggling to get more than 630KH out of Sapphire 7950s on: January 11, 2014, 02:02:54 AM
i spent countless hours tweaking my HIS 7950 to finally get ~645kh/s @ 1.031v and 1.525v mem, very happy with performance per watt

at first i could hardly get it to 550kh/s

these bastards are finicky, but what helped for me was bumping thread concurrency to 22400+ (HW errors galore below that) with 1500mhz mem clock and 1050mhz processor

that got me to just under 600, and tweaking intensity, tc and frequencies in small increments would find me 10 or so kh/s here or there, until i apparently found its sweet spot

also, using the VBE7 tool to disable boost and set the stock voltage to 1.081 in firmware helped with stability big time, and allowed me to set powertune to -20% instead of +20%

currently i do
tc: 24000
engine: 1139
mem: 1500
intensity: 19

19 and 20 intensity doesn't give me a hashing difference, but i get nearly 2% rejected with 20 vs .05% with 19

also, i realized my card is basically worthless for actually connecting a display--colors were off (over saturated-- didn't realize until i upgraded to a 280x) and it crashed all over the place when starting/stopping the miner

i was pissed when i used the card for playing games--very unhappy with 7950s for gaming in general (artifacts every now and then even at stock speeds, that boost nonsense is complete shit)

not sure how much of this applies to sapphire's, but when tweaking i had the most luck with mimicking what sapphire owners did compared to other brands, so i imagine they're fairly similar
