23  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin-Qt / bitcoind version 0.8.5 released on: September 15, 2013, 07:55:51 AM
When the PPA ver will be added?  Huh
I am not sure how I can tell what version is  being offered via the PPA.....
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, via the PPA. I got a 'corrupted database' error when starting up yesterday, which I thought was strange. I keep backups, and I restored the previous day's data but still got a problem running bitcoin qt. I then restored  the data from a week ago, still problems. I ended up accepting a re index, and it seems ok  now in the morning. I was getting curious as to why the backup  data still apparently gave problems, but if a bug was the cause, then that explains it. I guess (??) tat the PPA has given me an update by now? The debug window states that the version is
satoshi v 0.8.4.0-g839c7d1-beta

If you are receiving miniscule amounts, then it doesn't matter. You can use common sense. The site isn't scam.
Ah thanks, I was hoping that, it also helps to confirm my limited understanding of this stuff.
25  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Android key rotation on: August 11, 2013, 08:04:44 PM
I guess, or understand, that 'receive' addresses can be safely used more than once?
Receive addresses should be used exactly one time, then never again.
If you reuse addresses for receiving bitcoins you have no financial privacy, and you're vulnerable to issues like this.
Oh bother. Thanks. In my case I have never used an android device for any Bitcoin stuff so I trust I am safe from the current non random number issue(?)
However, it has been convenient to gather occasional small amounts from the (get free bitcoins) site http://netlookup.se/free-bitcoins/247552
Just to be very clear here, I now should not offer the same receive address more than once then?
tia
(edit)
I note that  this site mentioned above works on the basis of a receive address being used repeatedly.... Is it a scam site? or is it just  doing rather bad things?

..... Payment addresses should not be re-used after money is spent. If you do not re-use the address then you can not fall victim to this if your random generator is not as random as it should be.
Novice here.
I guess, or understand, that 'receive' addresses can be safely used more than once? Presumably the receive process is much more passive than a payment process? Is my understanding ok here please?
27  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MTGox verifying account - problems (from UK) on: June 10, 2013, 03:25:03 PM
Since you don't have any utility bills in your name is it because you still live with your parents or you rent a place the only option you have is certificate of residency it's a government issued paper have no idea where in UK you go to get one of those, after you got all you need they verify you in 2 hours. Good luck.
LOL Thanks but I do have my own house, and am more than well matured....  In UK Utilities TV, phone, tax, everything, can be online (for a discount) I even took part in a Utilities online mass auction for a reduced rate facility, lowest bidder. Even my waste disposal bin outside is registered and managed online! Local Government tax is done annually, not good for their 6 month deadline.

However - success! - I did see that they like phone stuff, and I realised my phone and internet account went online less than 6 months ago. This means I have a paper phone bill, my last ever(!) less than 6 months old, and this was accepted.
:-)
I could not have done this in a month or so because of the timeout.
Here's to the future!
28  Economy / Service Discussion / MTGox verifying account - problems (from UK) on: June 10, 2013, 11:02:52 AM
MTGox now seem to require all accounts to be verified, so even with my small amounts I now have to go through the process, MTGox have been convenient. I am in UK, and the UK driving licence was accepted. A second document was required, related to residency. (I note that the UK Driving Licence includes my address). Most of my life is online, and I do not use medical insurance. Online stuff, including internet, is not repeat not, delivered to my door in the street address!

- Monthly utility bill
- Internet Bill
- Cellphone Bill
- Tax Return document
- Residency Certificate
- Medical insurance bill

I provided a motor insurance renewal request - addressed and delivered to my residence which includes insurance references which are verifiable, but this was refused. Anyone in UK using lots of online accounts (with no addressed paperwork to scan and send) already gone through this process? In UK I do my tax return online too, although I do have a *paper* request for my tax return to be filed. I do not want to use this as it necessarily includes much more information than just my name and address, UK National Insurance identity number for example.

I have a dental bill which is annual (wrong date), I am still thinking.....
Even my TV receive licence is no longer sent  in paper, annually.

Unless I can find something to suit, it looks as if I might have to say goodbye to MTGox.....

Any ideas?
29  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: satoshi wallet - move to different PC? on: May 21, 2013, 07:30:23 AM
I had to use a second machine because the first turned out to have a ram problem. So after I sorted out the ram problem, I was left with two machines running stuff, each with a wallet. I like to run bitcoin-qt because it supports the p2p nature of bitcoin, and I as I understand it, the wallet can be empty for this to work, so I kept the repaired installation as an empty wallet. It has a full current blockchain, is secure, (well, empty wallet), and can run as a p2p supporting the btc system.
The second machine always worked ok, and its wallet now has some micro btc.
I want to manage my machines - move them around for different purposes etc. I cannot be certain that the new function/s will be appropriate for btc work. I have a number of machines, more than one user, etc. That is partly why I ask about the portability of the satoshi wallet.
So I would like to impose a wallet into a bitcoin-qt configuration, and them run the bitcoin-qt. Will this work ok or does the wallet somehow have a specific relationship with its bitcoin-qt configuration?

30  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / satoshi wallet - move to different PC? on: May 20, 2013, 07:54:58 PM
Portability of satoshi wallet (?)
I have a couple of PCs, each has a mostly current bitcoin-qt blockchain and its own individual satoshi wallet. (I think I am using correct terms here). One wallet is empty, the other wallet has some micro bitcoins.
Is it OK to swap the wallets over, each to the other machine? I am guessing that the blockchain is independent of the wallet, and the wallets will get synced (?) in their new system  as normal? If so, is this another way of saying that any one of a number of wallets could be 'plugged in' to the system, and then run, each wallet existing with its own contents etc etc (?)
Comment would be appreciated, tia.

When you say "transfer the contents", I assume you mean "send the coins" from one wallet to the other...?
In that case, yes.  If a wallet has no coins left, and you are not expecting anyone else to send any coins to any of the addresses in that wallet, then you can safely discard that wallet.
Thanks!
33  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - newbie - paper backup basics? on: April 15, 2013, 07:34:38 AM
Thanks for the responses.
Wow. Freaky stuff.
;-)

Does it follow then, that if I create another, new, armory wallet, alongside the first armory wallet, and transfer the contents of the first wallet into the second, (maybe even delete the empty first wallet) that only the backup of the second wallet is relevant, and the backup of the first wallet is of no security value to anyone?

34  Bitcoin / Armory / Armory - newbie - paper backup basics? on: April 13, 2013, 03:37:54 PM
Just started using armory (on top of satoshi), a single armory wallet containing one address from a received value from my satoshi wallet, and after confirmations, I made a paper backup. It all worked :-)
However, I subsequently transferred another additional address value (is this a correct description??) into the armory wallet, and when confirmed, I decided to again print out a paper backup.
I am mystified that the first paper backup of the armory wallet appears to be identical numbers as the second paper backup, because in the second situation, the wallet contents was different (increased). What have I missed here?

Again - for the record FWIW. When arranging to replace the problem RAM stick, I discover that the problem RAM is incorrect for the mboard, but presumably only marginally.... It looks as if the (Asus) mboard was originally made for ddr2 and later versions could use ddr3, but only to a speed of 1066MHz. Some DDR3 1333 MHz will down speed to 1066,  but many will not. The RAM which works well is labelled as 1066. The problem RAM is only labelled 1333. I think this is the problem. The original purchase of the new kit had a ram 'upgrade' fitted at my request, obviously with incorrect RAM.

37  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Transaction as yet 'unconfirmed'. Should the machine remain running? on: April 10, 2013, 09:56:56 PM
I have completed a transaction to receive bitcoin, and they now appear in my bitcoin-qt wallet on my local machine. I note that the transaction is initially marked as  unconfirmed, 2 of 6 confirmations. After a short time,  it is 3 of 6 confirmations.  My question: how important is it for my wallet to remain online during this process? For example, it would be convenient for me , just now, to take the machine offline (turn it off), and continue in some hours time. Would that be a problem for the confirmations?

38  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Moving bitcoin from online account to local wallet? on: April 09, 2013, 09:16:43 PM
In MtGOX yo uwould use the 'Funding Options' button and 'Withdraw' your BitCoins using the address of your local wallet
Thanks. Just a clarification here - am I correct in understanding that my local wallet (or maybe any of my notional wallets) can generate any number of addresses for the purpose of receiving bitcoin?
So - I might generate an address to receive a withdrawal from mtgox, whatever?
Also, it sounds like Funding Options>withdraw is not the same as 'spending' something in my own direction (to my own wallet)?

Good Luck!
Thanks :-) it feels a bit like deep water at this stage!
39  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Moving bitcoin from online account to local wallet? on: April 09, 2013, 08:31:17 PM
Thanks. There are so many questions (!)
In, say, wallets (such as bitcoin-qt or armory), when a bitcoin balance exists, what is the essence of the balance value - is that what the 'private keys' are? Is the 'value' associated with these private keys, like, they are the actual (money)?
Am I correct in thinking that with, say, a paper wallet, it is the private keys which are printed out?
Is it unusual for the private keys to be shown visibly in wallets? I guess the answer may be yes unusual, because I hear talk of them but I do not see them offered as examples nor printed out...
Am I correct in thinking that part of the usefulness of a wallet is to handle and convert private keys into a total 'value', regardless of the complexity of the composition of the grand total?
And sort of associated question - is it useful to try to arrange a transfer into my wallet of a single sum (single private key??) or try to split the value into more than one single transfer (several private keys??) for future convenience? Or is this somehow missing a point?
tia
40  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Moving bitcoin from online account to local wallet? on: April 09, 2013, 07:42:43 PM
Thank you for the great information here.
The wallet I start with is the one which appears after download and running of the bitcoin-qt from the www.bitcoin.org site. Does that mean my wallet is called  the 'bitcoin-qt wallet'? I believe this wallet now has a facility to encrypt it, if required. This one seems to need the entire blockchain (?) to be first downloaded, and it all runs p2p presumably as a full node (?) which I guess is very ethical, and I like that idea, although somewhat inconvenient for wallet portability.
