201  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Newegg offers a PS4 for $319.99 with Bitcoin (exclusive payment only) on: August 20, 2014, 08:11:31 PM
http://slickdeals.net/f/7146826-sony-playstation-4-319-99-free-shipping-newegg-pay-with-bitcoin?v=1

i think bringing more attention to these exclusive deals will help us draw in more users.. so if you have an SD account, please thumb it up.. or buy it if you are looking for a good deal on a PS4.

This is really cool! Sadly I just bought a PS4, maybe I should donate my PS4 to a family member and get another with this deal.

I wonder what Bitcoin only Holiday deals we will get this year, maybe we some bitcoin only Black friday deals Smiley
202  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Invoice from CoinTerra? on: August 18, 2014, 09:45:27 PM
It all looks fairly legit (the body of the email anyway) and if the return email is a spoof from the surface it looks like its going to cointerra.com.

I'm on a Mac and I dont think I've got anything Java installed but I'm still not clicking on it.

I know around 2012 Mac dropped Java being included on the machine by default: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/10/19/us-apple-java-idUSBRE89I1A920121019

If you opened your terminal on the mac and typed:
which java

If that returns no path then your cool.
203  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price | Flash Crash on: August 18, 2014, 09:41:06 PM
Actual price: $445. What do u think? Are we going up?

Flash a-ah

I am really curious what the price will be like this Friday Night United States, I have a feeling it will either be well above 500 or below 400. I can't imagine the price will stay this low after this Thursday/Friday, I know many people are trying to pool fiat to make purchases at this price. Friday is payday for alot of people, maybe we see some sort of rebound by Saturday Afternoon.
204  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Invoice from CoinTerra? on: August 18, 2014, 09:34:09 PM
Two weeks in a row I've received an invoice from them but I've NEVER ordered anything from them. Odd thing too is that the invoice is a .jar which makes me suspect the file to be some sort of trojan or virus.

Anyone else getting these?

Yeah that was almost certainly a virus, that is a common method to send someone a jar file, some people might not understand the executablity of the .jar file-type and just double click it. (Only if Java is installed and the paths are set correctly) If you have any other details it might be helpful for other users, don't bother posting the jar here.
205  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi was assassinated by The Bitcoin Foundation? New evidence coming in on: August 15, 2014, 12:48:35 AM
The Bitcoin Foundation is a very shady group that has been heavily involved in many illegal activities. From allegely hiring hitmen to the "loss" of around 800k bitcoins.

Many murders and "suicides" revolve around TBF.

Here is the "suicide" of Autumn Radtke : http://nypost.com/2014/03/05/bitcoin-firm-ceo-found-dead-in-suspected-suicide/

she was involved with the Bitcoin Foundation and the "suicide" is looking very suspicious.

With The Bitcoin Foundation being one of the biggest most influential entities in Bitcoin if they somehow were able to find out Satoshis indentity which is very much possibile. Their is no question they would act immoraly and either kill him to seize his power or detain him.

From theft in the hundreds of millions to murders the Bitcoin Foundation is a corrupt organization that will do whatever it can to gain more power, I will look into this case more and bring out the truth.

Kind of seems like Sol Adoni might be investing in a new account? Seems to fit the MO: About Satoshi or NSA, or Deception + Bitcoin in general. Each line is a bullet point that he correlates a tiny bit to the grandiose claim he states in the subject. I think we are just missing, more sock puppets, and a link to his 199 dollar ebook...

207  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin the Wild Wild West 2014 / Internet Wild Wild West 1998 compare! on: August 14, 2014, 08:35:15 PM

an article about the Internet in 1998 about how it is the wild wild west ...read how similar it is to press on bitcoin now in 2014

Haha nice read, this kind of thing makes me feel like I am getting old. You are correct it certainly does draw some similarities from the early Internet Marketing Scams/Schemes etc.

My favorite Quotes:

"Every time you retrieve a file, view an image, send an E-mail message or jump to a new web site, a record is created somewhere on the Net."

208  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Come on guys!] Rant on underfunding of viable projects on: August 14, 2014, 08:28:56 PM
People say it, but ill say it again. Bitcoin is a community, however, recently I've noticed a theme. People are often missing the important innovative projects. I see things like etherum being funded but darkwallet, a project of a good supporter of the community runs dry until someone posts a rant like this.

I see the attractiveness of some of these projects, the promise of money. Do people realize that this way of moving forward won't change anything? These viable projects are often worth millions, look at bitgo. 12 million in funding due to their stellar team and wallet Tech. The money is deserved, however, this serves as an example of what and why funding can do for a project.

Simply look at some of these project's (will add more later on phone)
  • etherum
  • storj

These projects promise coins in return. Let's be honest most of these currencies won't amount to much (truth be told). I think we need to rethink how we decide projects to support. A lot of these projects are just hidden wealth, contributions go far.

A lot of these projects just resolve to VC. They shouldn't have to, they're often giving an amazing innovation to the community for free. Can't we show a little aptitude towards these projects?

I've talked to a lot of project owners. From the guys at darkwallet, bithalo, bitgo and so on... I know the difference funding can do to some of these projects. Remember trezor?

Adding more soon and adding links on phone atm
Some viable projects;
  • Darkwallet
  • bither
  • armory

If you have a project please list it below with a link a description thanks.

To not seem like a douchebag I didn't list my teams project you can find its announcement in my signature
address; 1Hkcm5P1uwqonaz8R7vMaXtUkP3jmV7rbh

Whenever I see a Donate with Bitcoin button or an address added to a site I frequent I will donate ~10 USD.

Its sad to see how much money Stellar and Ethereum have raised in such a short period of time compared too worthy projects.

Just a side-note, maybe some places needing funding can offer a t-shirt or hat for a donation. (10 dollar t-shirt, accept a 25 dollar donation in BTC/Fiat) Not only would it help earn 10-15 dollar donations, but people who donated will then advertise the software by wearing the shirt.

210  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Need help implementing Bitcoin project at kids’ high school on: August 13, 2014, 05:08:12 PM
Responding to the above reply, there is a Testnet version of Andreas Schildbach’s Bitcoin Wallet for Android. I definitely like the idea. Perhaps if it was done during class, the teacher (or you) could directly send the coins to each student (by scanning their address qr code). That way they would learn what a real transaction is like.

Very cool I knew someone had to have made it, I might have to toss this on one of my Android devices.

Op, You also might be able too reward students with Testnet coins for doing well on tests, or being helpful or something. They could send the coins to you for a tiny benefit in the class in the future ex: Leave class 5 Minutes early or bypass a single homework assignment/test. This could motivate them to learn about the digital currencies as well as motivate them to do well in their courses.

Need help implementing Bitcoin project at kids’ high school

I want to implement a Bitcoin project similar to the one at MIT (http://bitcoin.mit.edu/announcing-the-mit-bitcoin-project/) at my kids’ high school.  I don’t plan on doing it at the same scale as MIT, but think introducing Bitcoin to kids at this age is a huge benefit to them.  In a nutshell, MIT is giving $100 worth of Bitcoin to every undergrad—no strings.  I emailed them for details of their program and they are still working-out the details and could offer no immediate help.

So, my plan was for the Math teacher to offer this as extra credit for any student that wants to do so.  There are about 60 kids in the 10th grade (including both of my kids).  I was thinking of starting them with $5 worth of Bitcoin (about 0.0092 9938 BTC @ $537.16; or 9,299 bits, or 929, 938 Satoshi).

I am looking for suggestions for implementation.  Specifically:

1)   Funding.  It’s only about $300 (less than 1 BTC), but budgetary issues prevent me or the school funding it.  I was thinking about asking for donations, but getting donations from parents for something they totally do not understand is almost impossible.  Should I a) hit-up some Bitcoin millionaire for a single BTC, or b) approach local businesses for generic “school donations”, or c) some other approach?

2)   Funding logistics.  Let’s say I get the $300 to fund, should I use Coinbase.com to purchase the coins?  In my personal Bitcoin venturing, I avoided Coinbase as well as any other centralized, controlled, on-line Bitcoin services.  My 0.0799 0421 BTC I have now, I bought from a friend, not any service.

3)   Wallets.  The students will have both Android and IOS phones, so, should I recommend one wallet for each or let them choose?  I am thinking that since this is supposed to be a learning exercise, it would be easier if we told them which wallet to use.  I was thinking of Bread Wallet for IOS and Andreas Schildbach’s Bitcoin Wallet for Android.  Since we’re dealing with very small amounts and we want to encourage the kids to buy, sell, trade with each other, I figured we would not push desktop wallets at this point.

4)   Distribution.  My thinking was that once the kids have their wallets set-up, they will email the teacher with their student ID and public key and we would then do a direct transfer at that point.  Another option includes printing 60 paper wallets pre-loaded with 9,299 bits that they could sweep, but  I am concerned about tracking distribution and preventing kids from getting more than one, etc.  I also could see the kids just trading the paper wallets instead of actually using the e-wallets.  The other issue with the teacher (or me) doing it at night once we receive an email and public key, is that I wanted the kids to see the immediate transfer from our wallet to theirs.  There is just something about hitting “send” and hearing that little ching-ching in your wallet that makes a better impression.

I am open to suggestions on all of the above points.  I am also planning on documenting this as well as I can in hopes that other schools can use it as a guide to implementing similar programs there.

Thank you!

I think this is a good idea, I unfortunately do not have much advice on how you should approach this subject. Only thing I can think of is it might be worth trying to use the Bitcoin Testnet to demonstrate functionality it would be basically free to acquire Testnet coins. In regards to mobile wallets that use the test coins, I don't think any exist currently. For training purposes the coins generated on Bitcoins testnet might be sufficient enough to teach the students about how Bitcoin works. Alternatively you could create your own Alternate Coin for educational purposes and just distribute it to the students etc, show them how to mine the currency etc.

Has there been an indication from the mods as to WHY these threads are being deleted?

Because people keep making the same exact thread, with little to no variation on the content.

People are creating posts about the same exact subject without searching to check whether or not a similar thread was created. Someone with multiple accounts kept making topics on the subject with no credible information, and would reply to his own threads often times trying to sell an e-book that cost upwards of 200 United States Dollars from Amazon.
213  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Will my college dorm room be able to handle 3000W? on: August 12, 2014, 05:11:49 AM
That won't help if they are on the same circuit. I doubt his room will have two of those.

True, and since its a single room the likely hood of that is very slim, if it was a 3 person room, perhaps.

Yes, but a 3 person room has 2 other persons inside it. Cheesy

Imagine your roommate mining 24/7 and your room has 90 db and 40c constantly.

haha, I also thought about how terrible a single dorm room would be with a rig running 24/7.

Hi, I'm new here.  I was thinking of buying this miner:
http://gawminers.com/collections/all-miners/products/shipped-pre-order-september-6-th-s-spondoolies-tech-sp30-yukon-batch-1

and bringing it to college to use it.  I live in a single room in a building that was created in the last 5 years.  While I don't know much about electricity and the like, I am worried that the miner I was going to buy will draw too much electricity.  I wouldn't want to cause a short or something like that.  I do not want to damage the room's electrical circuits/wall outlets.  I guess my main question is whether I'd be able to plug my bitcoin miner into a wall outlet and begin using it or if I'd need to take special precautions?  Would I have to use both the plugs that are provided with the miner? Or could I just plug it into one outlet?  Also do you guys have any tips I should keep in mind?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Google says:
UK power outlet is rated at 240V and at 13A which works out to ~3120W
North America, a 120V receptacle is going to be on a 20A breaker; so ~2400W

Probably not, but maybe you could split the units draw between two outlets?

Do you think Realcoin should be SHA256 or SCRYPT?
http://realcoin.com/

Voice your input below. . .

They probably have it setup so 99.99% of all the block rewards will be given out when the genesis block is mined. I can't expect they would allow people to mine this currency, they will distribute it themselves.

They basically they will generate tens of millions of Realcoins in 1 minute, then sell try to sell them too people for 1 US Dollar. Then they invest the USD they receive into better vehicles like Bitcoin, so they can repeat the cycle all over again.

In an effort to help widen bitcoin’s reach and create a simpler experience when dealing with the online currency, KryptoKit, makers of the bitcoin wallet browser extension, launchedRushWallet, a new easy-to-use bitcoin wallet that works on all web browsers and mobile devices and unlike other wallets, it doesn’t require any login credentials.

http://www.ahametals.com/finally-instant-cross-platform-bitcoin-wallet/

This is pretty cool thank-you for sharing it! I think I also saw some news about this on Wired or Google Plus this morning as well. Here is a link to the actual wallet: https://rushwallet.com

Seems like you generate a wallet by moving your mouse around, then you bookmark a URL and are able too use the wallet, reminds me of how some of the Dice web-pages used to work.

218  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Calculate Bitcoins Mined Per Day on: August 06, 2014, 05:06:05 PM
Hi Guys,

I am trying to create an excel formula to calculate bitcoins earned per day.

I would like to incorporate the following factors.

Current Difficulty
Current Network Hash Rate
Current Block Reward
Current Block Frequency

Once I have got the base formula working for bitcoins per day, I would then like to  calculate bitcoins earned over a 12month period with a Difficulty increase which I can input.  For example, I would input 5% increase per month, I would then see the result of that.

I know this is not anything other than a vague guide, but I would like to get it worked out.

Any help on this would be fantastic.

https://blockchain.info/stats

The above stats are for each 24 hour period

You can utilize the API that Blockchain.info and other sites have to calculate this stuff in other applications. Alternatively you could just run bitcoin-d and get information from it periodically.
219  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: My wallet on blockchain.info hacked even by e-mail comfirmation code !!!!!! on: August 05, 2014, 09:24:04 PM
Hackers don't need access to his e-mail account or his blockchain.info account in order to access his private keys.  This has happened many times to many of blockchain.info's customers and the response has essentially been: "Your computer is not secure.  Keeping your computer secure is not our responsibility, it is yours.  Because you failed keep your computer secure, your private keys were compromised."

They are correct.  What they fail to mention is keeping an online computer secure is impossible.

I have a hard time believing that only a few pairs of keys from Blockchain.info were accessed by hackers, what makes more sense is a that a few customers machines are compromised with key-loggers.

If it was that easy too access the private keys on Blockchain.info, don't you think more people would be having issues storing coins their? It sure seems like alot of people are happy with their service. If this seemed like a widespread problem, I would agree with you but honestly this seems like a failure on the customers behalf. Probably was using Windows and downloading altcoin wallets, miner executables, and visiting links on this board etc.

Blockchain.info and email providers have logs that clearly indicate that those accounts were not accessed in previous hacks.  If it was a keylogger being used then users would also receive e-mail notifications when their blockchain.info account was being accessed.  2FA does not prevent a hacker from accessing the private keys on your computer after they have been decrypted.  Blockchain.info does not store or have access to unencrypted private keys.  The private keys get decrypted on the user's pc.  This is why they never assume fault for the thefts.  The keys are decrypted on your own local computer.  You are responsible for keeping them secure at that point.

That's pretty interesting, I have never actually tried to use Blockchain.info to for storage, I just assumed they dealt with private keys like most other online wallet services. So they actually have you generate an encrypted private key, they then store this encrypted key, and you should be the only one able too decrypt it? If he was actually being keylogged whenever he decrypted the private key perhaps the decryption key was keylogged, or maybe the unencrypted key was taken right after decrypting it?

As for the email trail, without requesting records from the email provider or the service sending the mails, it would be as simple as just logging into their email and removing the auto-generated emails from the inbox, if you had key logged their info this would be easy. This gives the appearance that no mails were sent even though they were just deleted ASAP.

How to implement a Bitcoin like system which works only within intranet ?

(This system should not affect or be affected by the original Bitcoin network outside)

What changes need to be done ?
Any references ?

What your asking about is essentially creating an Altcoin using the Bitcoin source code. All you need to do is: generate new Timestamps, epoch string,  Merklehash, mine genesis block. If you change these values in the main.cpp, Bitcoin will start a new chain on your intranet. Just have one bitcoind compile run as Listen and have the other nodes connect to it. Its easy to create and mine a coin on LAN.
