201  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Anyone using BeagleBone for FPGA mining under Linux? on: May 08, 2012, 02:37:49 AM
For the price of this, you can pretty much pick up an arm based (a8? don't know a lot about arm devices) netbook/laptop. Or a few dollars more. I can't find a solid price on a beaglebone at the moment. Although I do know you can pick up an used atom based netbook.

This has the benefits of a case, power supply with battery, screen, a reasonable hard drive (whether ssd or hdd), plenty of ram and a keyboard/mouse. All in one. For the same cost. No hacking required.

Granted it's not as cool, but it's simpler. When mining, simplicity wins.

As far as an ARM based miner, pooler has one going.

Ignore this if I've completely missed the point of your thread (using a low powered arm device to run linux and drive your BFls.)

Thanks for your thoughts, you didn't miss the point of my thread. I'm not stuck on the Beaglebone, I just look for comparable alternatives. AFAIK one can buy the BB for 89$ and it appears it takes up to 500mA @ 5V.

202  Economy / Marketplace / Re: ["WAIT LIST"] BFL Mini-Rig Order Date/Ship Date on: May 07, 2012, 08:51:54 PM
Ordered = 5/3/2012
Qty = 1

Any chance I'll see this by July?  After reading all of these posts, I get the feeling BFL "tests" equipment by mining for their own btc before shipping it.
I remember hearing that they mine on eligius to the eligius donation address to do the burn in.

...all I know is that their Easyminer GUI (shown on their site) defaults to Eclipse Mining, and Inaba seems very enthusiastic about them  Smiley

I don't need comparisons to some monkey gerbil shenanigan.  but FINEBE HEARTLESS

Not sure why I'm responding to this, since Bruno has pointed out the futility of my responses so effectively.

However, you seem to be lacking a basic understanding of human behavior:
We cannot be labeled heartless without having been given anything to be empathic about.
That one sentence in your OP isn't really evoke any sympathetic responses (neither did your earlier posts), and your response posts even less. Is that so hard to grasp? That's your way of fund raising? Really?

My best advice: Get a new user name and try it again, this time with a bit more tactfulness...
204  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A Favor I Wish I Didn't Need To Ask For on: May 07, 2012, 07:03:55 PM
nah. haha

What? That's your response? You are letting this go so easily?

Seriously, for a fund raiser to do surgery on my sick cat I would have a flier ready to go just as I mentioned above and would be ready to give anyone the full spiel.
So scammer or real, that would be a main requisite to get any sympathetic responses.
Have you ever done a fund raiser? This is not about begging and getting a quick buck without any work; fund raising is definitely hard work. And it takes a lot of preparation, getting a feel for your target audience, being persistent (in a good way), and staying on top of it.

With "nah, haha" you just lost me.

And then you post a pic off Google and piss us off (who would ever do that with a real sick cat?Huh?).
And the "cant wurk 2day" seems to be more a problem of the owner than the cat...

Time to get you a new user name and try again (but the next time taking all that advice into account and maybe study a few charity threads here).

If anyone could spare any part of a BTC it would go along way towards my fundraising for a surgery for my cat.

Sure! Would 3000 work for you? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=77535.msg886761#msg886761

Ha, just as I was typing my response.
Must be mind reading...

It all starts with posting a cute pic of your cat, and tell a moving story if you want to get people's attention.

Second, you might aspire a desire to participate in the forum; one is to add your meaningful quantum of opinion to threads.
Along that line: You can start by changing your completely useless "3000" post in Bruno's thread to something more thoughtful (and maybe read the subject):
3000

All these things would be a nice start.

Furthermore, you might not have read enough yet here, but there's generally a no-begging motion here, so you will need to pitch your request differently.
A special free BTC thread is here, if you like to try your luck:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=22126.0

Generally, be a bit more verbose.

Good luck!

I've watched the site for a while now and I for one have not even thought about buying a ticket until there were a lot more tickets sold.  I could do quite a bit with 1 BTC in the time it will likely that for all the tickets to sell.  I say set a date and the tickets will sell quickly, if they don't refund everyone on that date.

Thanks for chiming in randomproof.

Yes, that is a common trend in such raffles: There's a sales momentum at the beginning, and another one towards the end. By not setting an end date Cablepair set himself up to loose that wave towards the end. I PM'd him about that, and he just answered. I'll keep watching where this is going...

Note: I edited my original message here as Cablepair did respond to my last PM now and I'm eagerly awaiting where this is going  Smiley

Ticket sales are now closed. I will post all tickets in a few minutes.

What does "Wind a Butterfly Labs Bitforce Single" in the subject title stand for?  Grin

One month down, 25% sold, so at least 3 more exciting months to come!
In addition, this now lacks momentum, and the probable waiting time is going to scare new customers off. It's an evil cycle.

Absolutely right, one more reason to define an end date just in case.

I even speculate that once there's an end date and we're approaching that date with only a low number of tickets sold, some people may recognize the great odds to win and buy extra tickets.

Cablepair, any thoughts?

214  Economy / Gambling / Re: [RAFFLE] Butterfly Labs Bitforce Single ~$600 - ~30 MINUTES LEFT!!! on: May 04, 2012, 08:47:26 PM
Why would some one buy 100BTC in tickets. for 25BTC more they could just purchase one!
...and wait for over 2 months.

I will not change the terms of the raffle,  it would be dishonest.

I think it would be dishonest to sit on people's funds and the prize forever.

JUST SET A PROSPECTIVE END DATE, CABLEPAIR!

216  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Anyone using BeagleBone for FPGA mining under Linux? on: May 04, 2012, 08:36:37 PM
The Raspberry Pi is a cool computer, but it's availability is low.

So is anyone out there using the BeagleBone (like the A5) under Linux for FPGA mining?

I'm thinking of running cgminer on it and attaching my BFL singles.

Just wanted to see if that's already been done  Smiley
217  Economy / Gambling / Re: [RAFFLE] Butterfly Labs Bitforce Single ~$600 - 6 days left! on: May 04, 2012, 04:37:12 PM
... Tickets have been purchased so far. What are you going to do with your new BFL single?

Well obviously I'm going to raffle it away the moment that it arrives, ...

No, don't!

Auction it off on Bitmit.net!  Grin

by the time this raffle is over.. that 7970 will be a collectors item!

Dirtycat, did you get your ticket refund?
219  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs - Bitforce Single and Mini Rig Box on: May 03, 2012, 03:10:13 PM
Question to BFL (or anyone else who has attempted this):

I notice that some of the Rev3 (heatpipe) Singles are shipping with a small fan on the bottom of the PCB, while others do not have that fan (only a passive circular copper heatsink). I'm assuming that the bottom fan on certain units is to give them a bit more thermal headroom.

My question is: How necessary is that bottom fan to the operation of the Single? If the unit is in a cool environment (<72F), and the bottom fan is disabled, would the unit be likely to throttle?

I ask because both the top and bottom fans are fed from the same 12V cable; if I ever decide to change the top fan for something else (say it fails), I'd have to either rewire the connection to the bottom fan (a pain), or loose the bottom fan.

Well, here's the classic BFL answer to this type of question:

Silicon is an organic process giving each chip it's own personality.  In the case of the singles, their operational heat signature is slightly different from unit to unit.  As we test them, we may place a fan under some units to increase it's thermal range.  You can take the fan off if you like.

I should also point out that faster firmware (when released) will perform more reliably in cooler environments.

That answer related to the extra fan underneath the case on some rev 3 units, but I would think that it's also the answer to your question.
220  Economy / Gambling / Re: [ANN] Bitcointalk Benefit Raffle - Win a Saphire Radeon HD 7970 - 1 BTC to Enter on: May 02, 2012, 03:24:08 PM
Its not the raffle its me.

I don't think it's you.

For me as well as some others I noticed it's the lack of an end date on this raffle that causes discomfort.
And this effect is compounding the longer this is going on without an end in sight.

Just add an end date and pick the winner by the method Giga used (as I mentioned before it works with non-sequential ticket numbers too).
That might actually make people buy some more tickets (as they calculate their chances of winning by the number of tickets sold).
