What is the limit? Zhou Tong stole close to half a million dollars, but you actually took steps to make sure his privacy was protected.
Zhou Tong hasn't been proven to be guilty yet, and the Bitcoinica people have started legal processes to pay back the BTC. If pirateat40 doesn't work toward paying back within a few months, his case will be very clear. Theymos, Zhou Tong AGREED to the evidence against him, but claimed he was framed. He never produced any proof of a third party. That makes him guilty in most world courts - mind you, courts haven't been "paid off".

You are going to make PMs public or give it to the police?
I will give them to the police if the police ask for them. Otherwise, I may post them publicly to help people find Pirate and obtain justice. Pirates are hostis humani generis. I'm not going to preserve the privacy of someone who stole 500,000 BTC. What is the limit? Zhou Tong stole close to half a million dollars, but you actually took steps to make sure his privacy was protected. In unrelated news, Zhou Tong donated a large amount of money to this forum.

Rob thousands of bitcoins and the only consequence is to recieve a "scammer tag" on the bitcointalk forum.
Yay!
He didn't rob anyone - money was given to him freely.

"Zhou" took funds recovered from "Chen" hostage in order to circumvent AML-regulations for suspicious private transactions at AurumXChange. According to him these funds locked at AurumXchange belong now to us Bitcoinica-creditors (which also means Zhou still privately holds further stolen funds). Even though I despise him for tricking his private funds free the question remains:
@AurumXchange can you unlock these funds and send them into the MtGox trust account? please give a status update.
So how much has Zhou Tong stolen and not yet returned? @AurumXchange should keep the funds locked. Zhou has stated they are his personal funds, so it is between him and AurumXchange. He is keeping our bitcoins to fund his personal mistakes. In other words, he's charging a fee for stealing from us.

I agree. The often repeated BS that there's no law against bitcoin theft hurts common and legal sense. But in practice there are difficulties, like having to prove possession first, and pursuing theft of bitcoins in court may be harder than more physical crimes.
I don't think proving the theft of bitcoins in court would be hard at all. The thief admitted to the evidence against him, but blamed an associate. If he can't produce the associate, wouldn't he be found guilty? He also cannot claim the forum account is not his, because he posted specific pictures of himself using it.

I'm not saying that things are perfect, so stop straw-manning to defend your ridiculous concept. Anyone who thinks that letting theives give back what they stole without actual punishment as a way of deterring and minimizing theft and losses, is clearly a fucking idiot.
If I have to choose between getting my funds back or get the thief into jail, I choose funds any day. I am not that kind of human, that enjoys someone rotting in jail that much, that I would waste my funds on it. However, I see, that you are probably different than me. Irregardless, you take away punishment, and there are no consequences. Everyone would be free to try and steal and hack because nothing at all would happen to them. Whether you believe it or not, the threat of punishment stops people from stealing. ZT needs to be charged for the theft of half a million dollars, we are just waiting until he stops returning funds before we do it.

I'm pleased that my threat of bringing him to justice forced Zhou Tong to refund. We actually held off on engaging the PI once he made the announcement he was returning the majority of funds. But the relationship is now in place and we WILL hold ZT accountable if he does not return the remaining funds soon.
According to ZT himself, the $40K being held is from personal funds, so he has no reason not to refund the rest of the stolen money.

I hope the lawsuit will eventually lead to criminal charges against the officers of the corporation. They did not file a police report, even after the hacker was identified.
Zhou Tong isn't even named as a defendant in the lawsuit despite being the only person who claims to know the hacker's identity, and despite claiming to have promised the hacker that Bitcoinica LP would not start a police investigation into him. Also, who are the actual officers of the corporation in the first place? Zhou's certainly acting a lot like one, but... I believe the officers of the corporation feel they are untouchable because the corporation is a separate legal entity. In Canada at least (a commonwealth country), a director of a corporation is REQUIRED to do whatever is necessary to protect the assets of said corporation. So while they cannot be held financially responsible for Bitcoinica's debts, they can be held criminally (and hence civilly) liable for failing to do anything about the crime that was committed against their public business. Basically, they did nothing while the money was taken. I'm sure they paid themselves handsomely, however, out of what was left. All they had to do was pick up the phone and call the police. The fact they did not do this leads me to believe they profited from the hack.

Well, both ZT and to some extent Amir (genjix) wanted to make a fast pay back of the funds, which has been prevented by Donald and Patrick. So, if ZT offer to handle this would have not been denied by the this incapable consultancy, the theft would not have happened, because we would have had our money back since ages.
Yes, it's very convenient that Zhou Tong's criminal friend stole a huge sum from the Bitcoin reserves using a password that only Zhou Tong and a handful of other people knew to try, then converted them using one of Zhou Tong's e-mail accounts, just in time to make Zhou Tong the hero who could've saved everyone's money if only the evil Bitcoin Consultancy cabal had listened to him. Just ignore the bit where the thief converted a chunk of the money to Liberty Dollars and Zhou Tong tried to convert a very similar amount back shortly afterwards. Obviously this is all a concidence and Zhou's simply the unluckiest guy in the world rather than someone who's playing the forum like a fiddle. finally someone who can think. Oh, there are more of us than you realize.

Had you on ignore for some reason, trolling I guess.
Now are you saying that Maged is a liar, or I didn't get you right?
Absolutely he is a liar. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=97215.0Saying I was trying to raise funds to injure/kill Zhou Tong is nothing short of a lie. Also, look here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=97365.msg1073135#msg1073135" Significant evidence" I was trying to hire a hitman. He ignored half a dozen people asking what this "evidence" was. The guy is so full of shit, and using his power as a mod to bully others. Anyway, this thread is about the tool Matthew, so I won't comment anymore on the liar Maged.

Yup, we're all criminals and Bitcointalk is a subsidiary of Silk Road, Mybitcoin, MtGox, and Bitcoinica. We're all nothing but scammers, liars, thieves, murderers and druggies. (/sarcasm)
You are, yes.

Probably a stupid question but how much space would be needed for a db of every hash and value?
Well "every value" is simply an infinite number. However to store say every passphrase using printable symbol on a standard keyboard (95) up to a length of 20 would be 95^20 = 3.58 x 10^39 records If we assume no overhead and an average of 10.5 bytes for the input and 32 bytes for the hash that would be: 1.52 x 10^41 bytes ~152,356,517,023,630,000,000,000,000,000 1 TB hard drives. The earth has about 1.3x10^50 atoms so even storing 1 bit per atom it would take up roughly a planet sized body. Of course if the user had salt their hash wouldn't exist in your database. To account for every 32 bit salt would require ~4 billion earth sized planets. So you're saying there's a chance... LOL +1 "Dumb and Dumber"

Was there any reason that the number 210,000 was chosen as the block reward reduction?

In October 2011 World population was estimated to have surpassed the 7 billionth person. Since then world population has increased by a net growth of around 45million people (August 11 2012, about 10 months later)
Just off the cuff, that does not sound right. At that rate, it would take us 20 years to grow to 8 billion. I'll see if I can find some facts to back myself up.

Where the heck do you live that they can charge you $40 tax on a $20 item?
I live in Canada, and ordered a small, $3 laptop fan from a company in the states. Ended up paying about $40 in import fees. "Free trade" my ass.

I hope everyone can comment with more reasoning and less assumptions. I'm trying my best to calm down and attempt to get more information about the hacker, because he also used my email for a credit card fraud case. It's possible to discover something at that direction.
I have also listed a few people who know this secret email of mine. And I'm going to question them one by one tonight.
I'm definitely on the side of Bitcoinica customers and I believe that if the real hacker really had ties with me personally like what MagicalTux said, I may be able to recover majority of the amount back if the hacker can be warned. This issue is very serious and if I'm the hacker, I would definitely return the full amount back to reduce the criminal punishment.
The hacker seems to be a Chinese because he used Chinese punctuations in his English messages in the Aurumxchange ticket.
I will provide any information needed to the police once Bitcoinica files a police report.
Now that makes no sense. You steal the funds just to return them to reduce criminal punishment? LOL But if the thief says he is sorry, then it is ok, right? In this community, apparently so.

AurumXChange has falsely accused me of being a paid employee of Zhou Tong, so I'm kind of in a unique position where I know for a fact they are more than willing to make false, irresponsible accusations with no evidence, or inadequate evidence.
Rarity and Maged have falsely accused me of threatening to hurt Zhou Tong, and wanting to hire a hitman, so I'm kind of in a unique position where I know for a fact Rarity and Maged are more than willing to make false, irresponsible accusations with no evidence, or inadequate evidence.
