2121  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to OFFLINE test a cold storage private key on: April 14, 2015, 12:09:52 PM
But what I'm actually requesting is to CREATE AN OUTPUT, check the full script to get the OK without doing the broadcast. There's no tool to make this task?

Creating a transaction does not involve the private key so what do you intend to test with that? Signing a transaction is where the private key comes into play. It is easier to sign an arbitrary message and verify the signature.
2122  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to OFFLINE test a cold storage private key on: April 13, 2015, 09:48:43 PM
You can install a wallet such as electrum 1.9.8 (not 2.0.x coz that won't work for this) or bitcoin core on your offline system. Then import the private key and sign a message with it. Then verify the signature. This should tell you whether the private key "works" or not.

Relevant:

Attempt signing with all the keys and verify the results. (Bitcoin core does this internally. And I strongly recommend it, it's a little terrifying that nothing else does. It's too easy to have a bitflip cause the creation of an invalid key, and too easy to defend against)

You don't need to download the blockchain for this purpose.
2123  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How to sign a transaction from paper (load transaction from text)? on: April 11, 2015, 05:21:58 AM
There is a qr code plugin that you can enable (the plugins option is in one of the menus, can't remember offhand which one but you'll find it if you look). It allows you to display transactions as qr codes. If you have a web cam on your offline system it can read the transaction that way.

2124  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 1.8.1 not connecting to servers on: April 11, 2015, 05:15:38 AM
You can convert a mini private key into WIF format (begins with 5,L or K) using the wallet details tab on bitaddress.org. You can download that site and run it offline. All the site's contents are in one html page.

BTW I recommend upgrading to electrum 1.9.8.
2125  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can't send bitcoins from Electrum wallet on: April 11, 2015, 05:13:05 AM
I wanted to buy something from a bitwasp based site.
So I used my public key (bip32 key) from that side and the key of the guy I wanted to buy something from.
So can he just restore a wallet with his key, and my two keys (from the site and from my electrum) and access to my wallet or the coins? And then send the coins to my adress for example, save the file and send it to me that I can sign it?

It's a 2 of 3 wallet so you need 2 extended private keys or two electrum wallet seeds if those extended private keys were created by electrum. So you have the seed for your electrum wallet so that's one. Do you have the extended private key behind the public key from that site? Do you have the extended private key of the seller?

If you don't have 2 out of 3 extended private keys you will need to create a partially signed transaction and then email it to the seller for him to sign and broadcast.

2128  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fingerprint private key on: April 08, 2015, 02:45:51 PM
Hello,

I was wondering if there is any way for me to create a private key using only my fingerprint and a password. Do you guys know if there is already a website to do so ?

Thanks.

You leave your fingerprints everywhere so it wouldn't be very secure.

2129  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: WTB 0.2 BTC With Paypal Will Send As Gift on: April 08, 2015, 02:32:55 PM
Thanks for the advice yes I recently reset my password because I'd been using the same one since joining and felt it wasn't very strong.

Changing the password is not the same as resetting it. Now you have lied and been caught. This makes you look even worse.
2130  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Problem undestanding cold wallets on: April 08, 2015, 02:24:07 PM
I'm very new to BTC and I'm having some problems to understand why colds wallets are so important to users
In a big company that handles a lot of BTC I could understand, but for me I can't even think in a good reason to use it.

Yes exactly you are just starting out and you don't need a cold wallet.

Use the wallet on your phone or PC. It should be sufficient for a newbie.
2131  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I found an 8 word mnemonic of mine. What does it go to? on: April 06, 2015, 09:25:20 AM
Are you the same person as this guy:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1012475.0

It seems quite a few people have stumbled upon 8 word mnemonics that they don't know how to use Wink

Reminds me of Dave of wallet recovery services talking about how different people would send him the same stolen wallet to brute force and of course non of them had any idea what the password might be.
2132  Other / Off-topic / Re: 2FA Options - Which is best? POLL on: April 03, 2015, 09:25:47 PM
Google authenticator is based on a standard called TOTP. Authy and others that are compatible with google authenticator operate according to that standard.

The best 2FA for crypto world is multisig.
2133  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum not opening, lost seed. Help needed ***Reward*** on: April 03, 2015, 09:19:38 PM
These instructions are for 1.9.8.

If you know the password and have the encrypted seed you can recover your wallet as follows:

You haven't told us your operating system. Find the electrum folder and rename it to something else. Location of the folder:

https://electrum.orain.org/wiki/Frequently_Asked_Questions#Where_is_my_wallet_file_located.3F

Now when you run electrum it will try to create a new wallet. Just go through the motions to create a wallet.

With electrum running go to the console tab and enter the following:

Code:
from electrum.wallet import pw_decode
pw_decode(  '<yourseed>', '<yourpassword>' )

Replace <yourseed> with the encrypted seed (don't include "Seed:" ) and <yourpassword> with your password.

It should output 32 hex digits which is your seed decrypted. Now create a new wallet file to house your restored wallet:

- File menu > new/restore. Pick a directory and enter a file name for the new wallet file and then click save. It will then show the usual wallet creation/restore "wizard".

- Select to restore a wallet and paste in your 32 hex digit seed.

- In future to open this wallet file use file > open.

If you are on Linux you don't have to use the electrum console. You can use python directly from the command line. I'm not sure whether electrum on other OS installs python. Does it?
2134  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [Bounty] No seed. Got password and files. Help! on: April 03, 2015, 03:34:21 PM
Looks like he's suffering from this bug in 2.0.x

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=998480.0

His wallet file is empty and does not contain any json object or other data.
2135  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Two-factor authorization (trustedcoin) with multiple devices afterwards on: April 03, 2015, 03:32:18 PM
Did you note down the 25 word mnemonic when creating the wallet? If in future you lose access to your phone you can recover your wallet using that mnemonic. That's your failsafe. After you recover the wallet using the mnemonic it ceases to be a 2fa wallet.
2136  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Unable to restore my wallet from seed. What to do? on: April 01, 2015, 04:19:52 AM
I was previously using Electrum 1.9.8
It's been 1-2 months since I last accessed my wallet and I upgraded to the new version of electrum only to find that wallet seeds are longer now and my old seed won't work.

I tried reinstalling the old version of electrum but my seed doesn't seem to be working there either. It's showing no transaction history and no balance.

I have my seed memorized but just to make sure I double checked a paper copy of the seed to make sure that it wasn't an issue of me not remembering the correct seed.

How can I generate my wallet so I can transfer my bitcoins to a newer wallet?

Do you see familiar addresses in the wallet once you do a restore? Do you see *any* addresses at all?

Oh and btw 2.0 is backward compatible with 1.9.8 seeds so you don't need to transfer to a new wallet. If you have a copy of the wallet file from 1.9.8 then that will work too.
2137  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum: pruned transactions, red labels, -1 confirmations on: April 01, 2015, 04:16:51 AM
Yes, I am aware of that, but that's not really what I meant. The history and labels are on my machines so why would server synching cause me to loose visibility of what is stored locally on my machine. I label transactions so I can reference them later for tax reporting purposes so I need to trust that the history and labels will remain intact.

You are having trouble with your wallet file so I suggested that you restore from seed. When you do that you won't have any labels. So you need to backup your labels separately and then import them into your new wallet file.
2138  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Help installing Electrum on Android on: March 31, 2015, 06:28:22 PM
Electrum android is abandoned and doesn't work. IMO it should be removed from the electrum website.
2139  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Help on: March 31, 2015, 06:27:27 PM
Transactions involving small amounts of bitcoin are not allowed because they are considered spam that wastes resources on the blockchain. The smallest amount you can spend is 5430 satoshis.

2140  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum: pruned transactions, red labels, -1 confirmations on: March 30, 2015, 04:28:47 PM
I wouldn't recommend it because in my opinion 2.0.x isn't stable yet.
what makes you believe so?

There have been 3 point releases so far and there are still reports of bugs with 2fa and stuff. I think it needs to be tested some more. Of course with open source software the users are the testers so I don't want to discourage them but at the same time I can't call it stable!
