2121  Economy / Speculation / Re: Something, something, something, technical analysis on: May 09, 2014, 03:55:47 PM
A bit of price action, today, and the day before yesterday. I'm extremely skeptical though, I admit. My best bet right now is that the situation is similar to the one we were in end of January:

Starting out in the lower daily BB half, inching upwards, maybe closing (just barely) above the SMA20 (the mid line of BB), only to fall back into the lower half. I do consider it possible to reach the upper half because daily MACD turned green, so some upwards momentum is to be expected.

For contrast though, look at price in relation to daily BB after we hit bottom last time (July 2013)

We decisively went through the mid SMA, and didn't close in the lower half until much later. Which is (EDIT) why I (/EDIT) personally won't trust this recovery until we are more firmly established in the upper half/above the SMA again.
2122  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 09, 2014, 03:01:16 PM

Look, btcwisdom has Bollinger bands now. How convenient.

Like I said a few days ago, I don't want to be a pessimist, but I prefer to wait til there's actually something noteworthy going on before I start cheering.

Not only didn't we break through a number of plausible (log) downwards trendlines that have been making the rounds for a while now, we're not even in the upper BB half. Go back to July 2013 to see what a decisive reversal looks like wrt BB.

If we manage to fight our way into the upper half of daily BB, and then break through the upper band, or alternatively (and more realistically) bounce off of it but at least find support at the BB mid line (SMA20, now at 460), I'm going to get cautiously bullish, but not earlier.

But I already know what the bulls will say... that's just a permabear talking, trying to spoil our fun :D
2123  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: BitcoinWisdom.com - Live Bitcoin/LiteCoin Charts on: May 09, 2014, 01:47:25 PM
Now the indicators is readded to SETTINGS menu.  but I still think the menu need be cleaned up.

Hm. I know you like to keep the site clean and simple, but I guess I don't see the problem. I'm regularly using btcwisdom on small screens, but the size of the settings menu never came up as a problem for me, and still doesn't, even with the extra indicators

Actually, the width of the 'indicator' line is only word longer than that of the 'chart style' line, so unless you plan to add even more indicators, I'd say it looks good as it is.

That said, did you consider splitting them up over 2 lines? Like:

-----------------
Candlestick, CandlestickOHC, ...
-----------------
MACD, KDJ, ...
CMF, OBV, RSI ...
------------------
Linear, Logarithmic
-----------------

Curse you, Blitz!

And, thanks for the link, t.stuart. Jaques Loussier is great, and I didn't know this performance. Love it.

Did you recognise the piano riff starting at 3.35? It comes from another Loussier tune, Pulsion. Dr Dre ripped it off for Eminem's The Marshal Mathers LP. They settled out of court when Loussier sued them for $10 million!  Smiley

Nope. Will listen to it again and try to recognize it.

2126  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitstamp TX Fee Exploit - Charge 1.16% instead of 0.2% without your consent on: May 09, 2014, 10:55:56 AM
They are still going to charge much higher than the posted fees in some cases. The minimum is $5, that's great. But what about $5.01? The fee should be $0.01002 but instead you will be charged $0.02. Okay the breakage seems capped at double now, but that's still a lot.

Their base fee is .5%.
If you place a $5 order you should be charged $0.025, but instead you will be charged $0.03.

In other words, even with their "fix", you'd get charged 20% more than advertised.

I see folks cheering because their answer to the situation was fast...
It's as if the people here would be happy to be served a plate of steaming shit in a restaurant, instead of actual food, as long as the waiter's fast.

so lets close our accounts in Bitstamp and start using your shitty exchange right ? because you've got it all figured out....

It doesn't matter whether he has an exchange thats worse or better he's demonstrating that there is still an issue. Rather than attacking him why don't you raise some valid counter points?
Agree.

It is good to see that Bitstamp has done some improvement to reduce it though. Hopefully they will increase precision eventually.

Only partially agreed. Not all 'ad hominem' arguments are fallacies.

If a Visa exec writes about the dangers of Bitcoin, we'd at least suspect him to be biased. If the owner of a competing exchange vocally slams Bitstamp, it at least invites additional scrutiny.

I'll revisit this topic iff an actual user reports another large enough divergence between advertised and actually paid fees, say 2.2 instead of 2%, and more than just a dollar. Until then, I consider this a decent fix.
2127  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 09, 2014, 10:28:20 AM

Slowly turning around?

If you use log for the trendlines, at least make all of them log, not just the ones that match your hopes.

(what looks like a straight line in this one is an exp trend as well, from April 2013 ATH to April 2014 bottom)

Just thought trolling could perhaps be a little more musical at times...

Thanks for the great links!

Quick, post more links, before Blitz ends our little classical music party...

(Heifetz is already is already quite old in that one, maybe not hitting all notes quite as precise as when he was younger. Still, it's my favorite recording of the Chaconne, particularly from around 4:40 onwards)

I speculate that it is all over now.

This has been confirmed artistically:

No trouble in thy breast.
Remember me, but ah! forget my fate."

Bastard. Now I'm positively sad. (not the claim about Bitcoin, because of the song I mean)

I'm willing to draw an MS paint picture of a friendly spider for everyone for FREE.

I want this.

Your wish is my command

Wow, I guess you really do get what you pay for.

He could have drawn a spider with 6 legs but he drew one with 8 legs. It is good value in my opinion. I like it.

I see what you did there *wink*

Richard Branson (Virgin Group founder), Jerry Yang (Yahoo! co-founder) invest $30M in BitPay: http://techcrunch.com/2014/05/08/bitpay-index/

You know what's funny?

For months we had a constant influx of good news (bad ones as well, of course, but that's another matter) but I mentally just blocked them out. I knew they just don't matter if the market isn't ready yet, so I didn't even bother with them. This is the first time in a long time I clicked and read a 'good news' item... so what does that mean?

Choo choo, maybe?

More likely, just means I'll buy in too early and see my net value drop :P
2132  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 08, 2014, 09:05:19 PM
becuae I banned my self from that joke's thread, I am going to post this here just for the laughs and giggles

The thread shows a poster example how one system would have performed during the downtrend of the past few months. The "track record" is impressive but we have to remember that I started from the data and honed the parameters with trial and error method to give the best results. In real world, spotting the downtrend correctly, guessing the parameters upfront, and executing without slippage would have diminished returns greatly.

I cannot sell my own signals because Bitstamp's average volume is BTC764 per hour. The system gives signals based on the last 2 hours market data and assumes that you can execute at the closing price. The signals are always in direction of the trend, so you will have to buy/sell quickly to avoid slippage, and your own actions cause more slippage. If I would use this, I want to allocate as many coins to it as possible, and that is less than I wanted. :(

The configurable excelsheet is for sale for BTC5, including tutorial in skype chat.

so who will pay 5BTC for that ? it is very cheap, almost free  :D

Yeah, what could possibly go wrong... a handcrafted volume change/candle size based (or something similarly naive) algo, backtested only on the recent month or two ("careful kids, it only works during downtrends!"), excluding fees and slippage in the calculation. Now on sale, for 5 BTC!

I really hope that whoever is inclined to spend that amount gets, say, waveaddict's newsletter instead, for a fraction of the price, and a multiple of the effect most likely :D
2133  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitstamp TX Fee Exploit - Charge 1.16% instead of 0.2% without your consent on: May 08, 2014, 06:53:49 PM
Writing here to voice my support for the '$5 trade minimum' fix.

On the plus side: fees can be expected to be near the advertised fee percentage from now on.

Also on the plus side: Bitstamp reacted fast to customer complaints and implemented a fix.

Also also on the plus side: Automated high frequency/low volume traders will hate it.

On the negative side, it seems to bring out the trolls. Oh well, can't have everything.

tl;dr To some it might look like a hack, but it's a solid hack, so no complaints from me.
2134  Economy / Speculation / Re: Arepo's Weekly Newsletter Discussion and Analysis on: May 08, 2014, 04:30:28 PM
It's now about a month ago that arepo stopped sending his newsletter. Still not a single word from him about the reason, not in the forum, not via email.

Unless he is seriously ill, or otherwise physically incapable of letting us know what is going on, I am now at the point where I have to assume he has been scamming the subscribers, that is: us.

By his own list of subscribers (and the corresponding price model -- old and new), he took in approximately 3 BTC according to my calculations, with a USD value at the time of around 1,500 USD (monthly exp average). Not a huge sum, but not entirely trivial either.

At this point, nothing short of a refund (full one, if he's serious about it, partial, as a fraction of the remaining newsletters if he just wants to save some face) for all subscribers who ask for it is appropriate.
2135  Economy / Speculation / Re: Something, something, something, technical analysis on: May 08, 2014, 03:42:48 PM
As I understand it, I Clouds were invented in the old days, to avoid hassle of computing moving averages - they are somewhat cruder version of MA, I understand. They look cool and form very clear pattern but when I looked at the past bitcoin price, they did not seem particularly useful.

Not sure if I'd consider that a very convincing argument against them. They're based on a number of (shorter term, longer term) medians, i.e. (H+L)/2, which I don't consider per se inferior to moving averages  (arithmetic means). Both have their place in TA, in my opinion. As far as usefulness is concerned, like I said, I'm still skeptical as well, but for example during the reversal period of 2013, Ichimoku analysis would have given pretty clear reversal signals well before reaching 100 (starting from around 90), which isn't too shabby if you are a swing trader who aims to take in only the large movements.

Is the trend line broken yet?

Knocking on the door @Stamp I think.

Currently knocking at a safe $35 distance Cheesy

such line!

altho its more of a curve then a line..

Log downtrend from December to now, or at least, one variation of such a trendline (another one goes through the December ATH).

bears decided a while ago that's the most likely trendline, but only /you/ can prove them wrong:

what a fucking joke, the last couple of days some of you were crying all around the place about the rounding up and about Bitstamp ripping customers off, and most of you agreed on the $5 min order, in fact most of you said it should minimize the effect, but today you are crying again about them doing what you wished for !!!!! what the heck is wrong with people  Angry

Too much coffee, huh? Cheesy

By my count, 3 out of 4 posts here welcome the decision.
2139  Economy / Speculation / Re: Analysis never ends on: May 08, 2014, 01:18:44 PM

bullish divergence?

[ ] yes

[ ] no

According to this it is hidden bearish div.

I see. I really need to start wrapping my head around this.

Thanks!

Bitstamp have updated their minimum order amount to $5:

Quote
Dear Bitstamp clients,

On May 15th, 2014 the minimum trade amount will be changed to $5.00.

Bitstamp’s accounting system rounds trading fees to pennies. To greatly reduce the impact of this rounding for our clients the minimum trade amount is being raised to $5.00.

The $5.00 trade minimum will apply to both our web interface and our API.

Best regards,
Bitstamp team

https://www.bitstamp.net/article/bitstamp-minimum-trade-changing-to-5/

LOL, rather than do the correct fix.

Depends on your perspective. You probably have the fee escrow method in mind, right?

I'm not a big fan of high frequency, low volume automated trading in Bitcoin, so the $5 min trade size is a solution for 2 problems in my view.
