2141  Local / India / Re: India may completely ban all Crypto as per meeting held on 30 oct on: November 02, 2018, 05:14:43 AM
The regulator's viewpoint is pretty clear from this.
Quote
The Council also deliberated on the issues and challenges of Crypto Assets/Currency and was briefed about the deliberations in the High-level Committee chaired by the Secretary (Economic Affairs) to devise an appropriate legal framework to ban use of private crypto currencies in India and encouraging the use of Distributed Ledger Technology

That highlighted part clearly states that the Committee has had discussions about ways to ban usage of cryptocurrencies. Its the council's job now to actually decide on what course of action to take.
To be real, i think the regulator is rightly concerned about the possible misuses that the Indian mind can come up with. We already have unethical operators running chit-fund scams, real estate scams, MLMs with the sole purpose is to part gullible fools from their money. The glitz and promises associated with cryptos will be too hard to ignore for millions of lower-middle income people in India. Just look at how many hardware scams propped up in OLX during the mining frenzy last year. The tendency of the knowledgeable to exploit those who know less is too strong in our people.

I ardently hope that there is no ban on possession or individual use. It should be the individual's decision to invest or be a part of the P2P economy.

Interpol has a lot of power, your lawyer will just be sentenced to prison without parole
Don't bet on the Interpol mate. They couldn't even keep their CHIEF safe from China. Its unlikely they could handle Lauda's lawyer.

You will need much more powerful allies to take on the Evil powers lurking in BCT.. Cheesy

I ranked up to Senior with merit. Have been slacking off lately due to commitments in second life. I am applying to get back into groove once more. Thanks!
2144  Other / Meta / Re: 2 questions (Merit & Spam related). Higher ranked opinion needed. on: October 10, 2018, 03:48:40 AM
Great Questions. The agreement seems to be:

1. Article based posts without original thought don't deserve merit.
2. If post history is mostly quoted reports, we should wait at least 2 months from zero-day.

1 – I ignore these posts.
2- --snip--
In these cases I’d rather wait, and if the trend continues and we cross paths again, I may merit the him further down the road. What I don’t want is to reward a momentary change of attitude, and my doubts there can only be dissipated over a larger period of time.

1) I hate these threads.......they would be better off starting a topic in their own words and still link to the article.
....Most of them are likely former bans for plagiarism.....They are not here to contribute they are here to earn and boost their post count.

2)....I did look st their history and they by no means spammed the forum, there were legitimate decent posts in between bounty applications.

I may have held off if the only decent post they had made came after the 1 merit rule, just to make sure it wasn't only to earn a merit and was part of a greater trend towards Improvement.

Question 1:
--snip-- If copy-pasting articles makes up the majority/all of their posts, I report their most recent one and explain they are a serial spammer....

Question 2:
No, I would not merit them. If you ask me again in a month, and that user has shown a sustained effort over a month or longer to improve their post quality and engage in discussion I may. At the moment, there are just too many newbies itching to go back to their spamming ways as soon as they get that elusive one merit.

My thoughts are the same on this. I am maintaining a list of zero-merit newbies to later check back on. Probably others are doing it too. My suggestion to newbies would be to refrain from campaigns that want you to post nested reports on their ANN page. Go with  the ones which allow filling through Google forms. This way you can maintain a better presence of forum and avoid being ignored by most merit-givers.

Fine!! Applying for the "List of People being considered" position:

Username: amishmanish
Post Count: 649
BTC Address (must be SegWit): 32B3XPrxaLxMSsBATTKvj7u9cgF1imctUU

I have 9 more merit to earn for a merit double-ton. No big deal these days but i am quite proud of it. I believe I have a topic history worth a look. Looking forward to working with the greatest posters. So much winning!

2147  Economy / Reputation / Re: Confession - Zapo=aTriz. on: October 06, 2018, 06:15:49 AM

That makes about as little sense as all the other excuses we've heard from the 2015-2018 aTriz (for lack of a better definition) so there is good chance that this is indeed the same person.

Here is what you could do: stop lying, get a job IRL, repay the loans or whatever you owe to whomever, stop fucking around with alts, and stay away from shady deals, or any financial responsibility for that matter (use an escrow if you must).

Here is what you will do: same as usual.

I have been here for sometime and saw the allegations about bitblisscoin, the alia drama and subsequent negging of aTriz. From those incidents, aTriz comes across as someone who wants to stay involved with BCT and campaign management. This is probably what leads to the painstaking effort he has put into ensuring professionalism with Zapo account.

People tend to resort to desperate actions for business when they are too involved. It is worrisome. In a decentralized marketplace, reputation is everything. Who decides on reputation? The subjective 'Trust' decisions lead to group-think and oligarchial strurctures. They even become meaningless for someone too big to fail. For example, in case of Quickseller. He supposedly has an army of alts and a -9999 rated account but does alright. (I mention QS purely as an academic interest. The account could be a case study in reputation and trust issues.)

I suppose it works just fine for QS. I suppose it should work just fine for aTriz/ Zapo too as long as they don't stray too far from the honest / Full disclosure path. More than anything else though, his quandary should give us a lesson as to what kind of ethical behavior to follow while doing business HERE. Not resorting to "doing whats necessary". This may get you short term results but in a decentralized marketplace, it has a non-zero chance of doing some non-zero damage to whatever RPG character you choose to play on here. Roll Eyes

Whether this inherent correcting nature of the market / RPG actually works or not depends on what kind of disincentive this creates for business-owners who choose to be casual with their dealings. For the long term, this is the most important takeaway. Other than that, I guess we also need an objective measurement of how "Number/severity of mistakes" reflects on "reputation."

PS: Zapo, Taking back the application. Thanks

2149  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: An open letter to the community, from the developers of Breadwallet on: September 26, 2018, 02:09:03 PM
Considering the legacy addresses valuable because they will access the forks is tricky. If we go by this logic, then most "Old businesses" will have their majority funds in Legacy addresses too. Why would they be willing to pay the opportunity cost of forks?
What is understandable is older users wanting to keep their cold-storage wallets as a "Fixed asset", only to be used in an emergency or in the hyperbitcoinization scenario. Avoiding the obvious headache of moving 100s of BTC to a new address may also be one of the reasons.

I just hope that accessing forks is the least of their worries.
2150  Local / India / Re: Will Bitcoins ever be legal in India ? on: September 26, 2018, 01:37:50 PM
Legalizing bitcoin is the least of the worries Indian government has. The section of populace involved is also not going to be the activist type. I think cryptocurrencies and bitcoin would go down the way most tabooed subjects go. They have no legal definition or acceptance but they aren't illegal either.

The oldest profession is also defined in similar ambiguous terms in India. Prostitution, per se is not a crime but "pimping" certainly is. So all you people selling your own time and services (bodies) amongst each other in crypto will not have any problem.
But the organizers, companies that aim to profit from crytpo (Like the pimps; Sorry for the brutal analogy..) will most certainly not be able to do so.

2152  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Demoted from Jr. Member to Newbie? Read here first. on: September 23, 2018, 09:08:32 AM
I see quite a few demoted newbies commenting here with 0 merits. I went through the post histories of few of you earlier to see if i can find a merit-worthy post and have created a new topic about it in the beginner's section here: Checking Demoted members to give Merit: Feedback and Helpful Links.

I would also recommend that you all make a habit of checking the "Show new replies to your posts" link that appears alongside your avatar at the top-left. Whenever you login, first check the pages you have posted in earlier. Watch the discussion and add something useful or even your own perspective. Engaging with people is the best way to be on this forum as well as earn merit.

I am saying this because I have notices many newbies who write on these pages and never show up again to continue the discussion.

hi. My English is not very good. I have to resort to google translation. And when do I make my comments or postings acceptable?
Nobody needs you to pass an English proficiency test here. Your English also seems fine. You are able to navigate this space and learn about bounties, translations etc. means you can learn more and help those below you to gain and understanding too.
For that, first you have to show an intent of actually being here to join the bitcoin ecosystem and not make it just another way to earn some tokens which may or may not be worthless. The user LeavingEden seems to have some English issues too but he is engaging in the discussions. I saw it worth my time to merit one of his posts.

If users like you refrain from these report posts and you actually engage in discussion for next 2 activity periods, i.e. 28 days, I or any of the other sources will be glad to give you some merit. Check the link I have given above to look for resources that can help you be better.

Really this only matters because you have removed our ability to set signatures or personal texts which is a dick move in my opinion.  Who exactly are you protecting with this move?
This is primarily a forum for discussion on bitcoin. Its a big problem if Newbies are not actively engaging with the bitcoin ecosystem but simply getting swayed by the glittery promises of ICOs, a lot of which are turning out to be scams. What is wrong if Theymos wants to take steps to avoid this slide as the forum admin?

What it does take away is people who would have been Jr. Member making reasonable to quality posts (but not exceptional enough to get merit or simply was never seen) from advertising whatever project they have found.  Giving them less reason to even use this forum.  Overall this change is just going to drive people away from this forum imo.

Jr. Members who have been demoted but have reasonable quality posts will be back up in no time. Additional merit sources are working actively so these people can come back up. If it drives those people away who are here only for alts and have no stake or interest in bitcoin itself, well then, to each his own. Honestly though, nobody wants to be away from bitcoin too long. Which brings me to ask your opinion about bitcoin and bitcoin's goals. You are at Sl. 17 in the list at the link i shared in this post.
2153  Other / Meta / Re: Enhanced newbie restrictions & requirements on: September 23, 2018, 09:00:02 AM
After reading a great article on Medium, by Sebastian Wurst--a computer scientist turned digital health researcher turned digital strategist, thinking about #startups, #blockchain, #ai, and #digitalhealth--I would like to begin a thread about the 30 questions across 7 dimensions that he uses to assess an ICO thus providing a simple framework for ICO due diligence.

As a Newbie  (reformed shitposter! Smiley), I do not know where to begin with such a discussion or whether the validity of such a discussion is warranted here. If such a discussion is warranted and, as the work belongs to Sebastian Wurst, I will do my utmost to ensure that his intellectual property is properly recognized in the forum.

Please help!
Anything about ICOs should ideally be started in the Altcoin Discussion threads. If you want to discuss its wider implication to bitcoin ecosystem, you could also use the Bitcoin Discussion page.
2154  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Checking Demoted members to give Merit: Feedback and Helpful Links on: September 23, 2018, 08:56:08 AM
Now I see a lot of newbies are struggling and doing the best they can in posting quality content topic yet the topics they are creating were already discussed like what is bitcoin, who is satoshi nakamoto. The problem with them is they don't do deeper reasearch. They thought its all about bitcoin or satoshi. Like what you said, they should conduct a research about lightning networks etc state their opinion regarding that matter etc so that they can contribute to the forum. They should think about contributing to the forum and helping others not about getting merits.
Apart from the already created topics, we also see these doom-and-gloom posts about whether bitcoin will survive? Is it a bubble? Is HODLing the right strategy? and so on.

What newbies and bounty-hunters don't realize is that bitcoin wouldn't have made any of the early adopters rich if, like them, they too had only cared about the price. These people were involved with the technology day in and day out. Struggling to put it to use in their localities, businesses and open startups that used them. That opportunity is still there. People are just not willing to use it. That old spirit of volutnary collaboration needs to be revived and imbibed among the newcomers.
2155  Other / Meta / Re: Enhanced newbie restrictions & requirements on: September 22, 2018, 10:25:00 AM
I think this rule is a good basis for beginners if you want to level up. Because it will reduce unreasonable posts (SPAM) in this forum

Which is all you did before the new rule!! Over a 1000 bot-like reports on 15 pages of your history. . New rule drops you to newbie and suddenly you get a human voice??That too admiring the new system! Stop Man! Just Stop!!

I don't know whether to laugh at such posters or be annoyed at them. Cheesy  Angry Angry .I hope you stay in newbie hell just a little longer.

The culture of giving merits to good content and reasonable answer is considered as shit post and those who put good content are missing merits

If you are not a bot, then here is some good advice for you:

Ok - if you care about this place, give up bounties for a month - improve your grammar a little, read the rules of the forum and only post 4 well thought out and valuable posts.

you do that, ill give you 50 merits.

how does that sound?

User Obiwan helpfully listed out newbies who had been demoted and I went through the post histories to merit them. I have only gone through one month history preceding the latest announcement. So did not merit those who just woke up. I am hoping that these examples and this post can help newbies decide what kind of user you want to be.

Sad to have gone through these but not finding too many people to merit. Then there are those who engage but haven't gotten the ranks they otherwise would have, if not for merit system; like this one. With the new rules, there maybe some members willing to change their styles. Your aim should be to become part of the Bitcoin ecosystem rather than simply hunting for bounties, 90% of which are proving to be scams.

For those who would like to earn some merits, there are some links you can check.

I know its a lot to go through and much harder than simply copy-pasting brainless links. You decide who you want to be. Once you have gained enough knowledge, the next logical step is to actually contribute. Learn to run a node, Learn about lightning network and its implementation progress. See if you can be part of Goods and Services marketplace in your own local areas.

Honestly, there is so much to do if you can take your head out of that useless bounty cauldron for sometime. Good Luck!

2158  Other / Meta / Re: Should we look through the post history before awarding merit to newbies? on: September 20, 2018, 05:09:01 AM
I too feel that looking at post history is extremely important. This can also be a potential way to discourage the spam/scam ICOs from relying on "one-line posters" and "nested reporters". A lot of these people are in newbie hell for now.

Just look at 5-6 pages of their post history and if it is all walls of "reports" from different projects, do NOT merit them hastily. These people will not rank up and will not be useful for the campaigns. The campaigns will in turn have to look for better ways to increase their ANN post counts. Any good project with decent developers can generate real discussion and buzz on its own merit over time. It is typically the scam ICOs that are relying on these "one liners" and "nest reporters".

I understand there are posters with decent posts mixed with reporting walls. Those can be checked on a case to case basis. This will also force them to change behavior over a period of time. Hastily handed 1-merits will defeat the purpose as people may go right back to "working hard" Roll Eyes The situation will surely evolve in the coming days as some of us will create threads like the one QuestionAuthority created when the merit system was introduced the first time.

2159  Other / Meta / Re: Confessions of a bounty hunter/shit poster on: September 20, 2018, 04:26:46 AM
There are no confessions in there except that you did not care about reading the rules when joining the forum.

Rest of your post is a judgement about the "high ranked members" as well as the "third world shitposters". Instead of looking outward and judging others, look inwards and tell us a real story. Your sweeping statements that "the entire forum is based on shitposting" is nothing but an amateur insult to a place you don't yet understand, or probably aren't interested in at all.

This problem and its severity has increased only recently. The signature campaigns were never a problem before the ICO craze so your judgement lacks merit. There are those who care enough to keep trying to improve the situation. The forum is still the best place to coordinate buying and selling real goods and services with bitcoin. It will continue to be so because a lot of originals are still around.

Stop trying to judge or snub the people here with your sarcastic wit. Talk about yourself.
2160  Other / Meta / Re: Checking every single bitcointalk profile which has 1-2 merit. Shouldn't we? on: September 20, 2018, 03:58:26 AM
It's a tough situation.  On one hand, it is great that this community has decentralized sources providing revenue to it's users.  On the other hand, those decentralized sources are being highly manipulated by established members and their armies of alts to spam the forum and collect all available revenue.

I honestly don't see any remedy for the situation outside of centralizing signature campaigns and having the forum be responsible for their displays and payouts.  While I'm sure this would be profitable for the forum, I don't think it aligns with the theme here.  It would also put signature managers out of business, who are in my opinion the ones to blame for the spam problems here.  That would surely have an effect on forum views and perhaps even a longterm negative effect on profits.
The spam problem can seem insurmountable but it is not. As you suggest, this would be a non-issue in a centralized system. This is something we should not hurry into. There is already glimmers of hope as over time, the forum is evolving its own defense mechanisms; its immune system, aided by a few vaccination doses from Theymos and admins. People like us who care and those who fight actively like the pharmacist, hilarious etc are like the White blood cells of this organism..Smiley

An example of this evolution is the easy to spot newbie/jr.member with "one-line" generic shitposts and the "nested reports". Like the common cold and flu, these are easy to spot symptoms. I have been trying to find people to merit. While doing that, I couldn't bring myself to merit post histories filled with these reports or these one-liners. Most people giving out merit may feel this way and such users will never get merit. The participants will in turn, avoid campaigns that need such nested reports. As people would be unwilling to join such campaigns, either the practice will stop or the pathogens will evolve. Like everything else in life, It is going to be a constant fight to keep the forum in good shape.
