2161  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: AntMiner S2 1TH/s Miner (1w/GH/s) on: April 05, 2014, 02:59:25 PM
what a complete trainwreck. geezus. considering s1's will be worthless in 3 months tops. it's time for an alternative. how about a 5Th for 6.5 btc. mmmmm hmmmmm

Yeah - I don't get where the ROI is coming from on some of these units. Given the difficulty level - and constant increases,  the market price of BTC, the cost of the mining rigs - and the upcoming boning from the tax man,  I just don't see it.

Must be that new math I've been hearing about.

There is not a single machine that would get your ROI unless you are playing the long term game. Price of BTC will go up to reflect that difficulty changes and cost of the miners. At the moment, BTC is going through some changes and government announcements having negative impact on the price.

Think this as an investment rather than regular monthly income.

Price of BTC could be $2,000 or $20 in the next 12 months.

Even you design your own asics and manufacturer your miners you will not make your money back unless you pre-mine and sell those miners few weeks / months later just like every other manufacturer.

That reasoning is a fallacy.  A piece of hardware will generate a relatively finite amount of BTC in it's lifetime.  As difficulty increases, the amount of BTC generated by a piece of hardware asymptotically approaches zero.  Given the amount of BTC the hardware will generate and given the amount of fiat required to purchase said hardware, it usually makes more sense to buy and hold btc now if you assume that price of BTC will go up.

most of my equipment profitability calculations assume that the difficulty jumps will slowly decrease in size from the current 15-20%/jump to 10%/jump in the late fall, to 8%/jump around the end of the year.  At current prices that puts break-even sometime around august, and stops being profitable around december. however, if prices go up then it may remain profitable (if only marginally) to keep running through to february/march.

i know what you mean though, BTC returns should be calculated from a BTC price invested.  calculating this shows significant margins, but those margins are eaten up at the current BTC/electricity price ratio - espescially for those paying more than $0.20/kwh in warmer climates

how much does it cost to host something like that at a data center?

ALOT, but i believe he owns the place so  Grin

I don't own it, but I have good connections :-) PM me if you're looking for DC space, and I can introduce you to my connections :-D

I did PM you about the cost of DC and help finding a DC in NJ, would appreciate if you could tell us how much it cost you to rent the DC, doesn't have to be exact, range would be great and the power cost also. I have 6 S1's but looking to get lot more machines in the near future and invest substantial amount of funds to do this and would appreciate your input, We have a commercial building that we own and the basement is about 1000 sq ft and I am thinking about converting it into a DC but just wondering if it's cheaper to rent before I spend lot of money adding additional power, cooling, racks etc.
thank you

if you have the space i would run your gear there. Install a few L6-30 circuits (220V, 30A) with server PDUs so that everything is a bit more efficient on a higher voltage.

throw in some shelving units ($50-75 will get you a nice steel rack with wooden shelves that can handle >2000lbs) and make sure there is sufficient airflow/AC capacity.

unless you know the DC owner, you would be looking at about $300-$500 per rack/month not counting in the costs of power and cooling (which would be about the same as cooling and powering yourself).

also gives you a bit more freedom to use more space and not have to jam things tightly into racks

If you can measure the wattage at the wall, i would appreciate .

My meter is holding pretty steady at 1111w-1114w.  It's not the kill-a-watt, it's pretty similar but made by Keedox.

Looks like mine is pulling 990W at the wall @110V on the 20AMP line, on the 15AMP line the PSU was shutting down every 2-3 minutes. After 30 minutes it's averaging 900GHs, so not a full 1TH. I will try the 1350W Platimax tomorrow to see if that makes a difference.

Awsome please report back.

if you have a voltmeter check the levels - you could have a bit of voltage drop in the thinner 15A wiring.  105V vs 110V could be enough to drop the PSU efficiency a bit

Fantastic! In a mere 10ish months ActM has managed to amass more hashing power than Bargraphics!  Tongue

But with all due seriousness, it's nice to see the numbers grow.

thats for sure. when it was 1TH i looked at my rigs and giggled. now they are looking a bit more serious
2166  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcement: Bitmain launches AntMiner solution, 0.68 J/GH on chip on: April 05, 2014, 01:50:41 AM
IMO bitmain is doing it right by moving to a biger design. The S1 units are great, but with some tweaks the S2 looks fantastic-er

They were so close on the S2. Their big mistake was using PCI-type connectors to hold the cards in place. You just can't ship systems like that. The S1 was perfect because each board was firmly bolted to the frame.

better bracing, like some sort of cross-beam/rods would probably be enough. however, it looks like the cards have little plastic slots/rails that were not sturdy enough to prevent wobble and flex.

Is it actually a PCI connection or a PCI-e 16x?  I am interested in getting some extenders when my unit arrives in order to see if theres any way to force a bit of extra speed if its given better cooling and another 600W

I'm too poor to go that route now,

I'm curious what wattage are you sucking when you're done?

probably about 24-26kW depending if its 220V or 110V

I had a steady 9.5A on my 120v PDU

geez - if the PSU is actually ~85% efficient on 120V at high loads, then there must be upwards of 950W loaded on it
2169  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: AntMiner S2 1TH/s Miner (1w/GH/s) on: April 04, 2014, 05:44:51 PM
Thanks!

Could you check me when you here?

I should know what to order.... Ants will be here in the middle of next week and I always change the fans to high cfm....

I imagine they use the same 120x38 fans as the S1 - you want lots of airflow for a system like this.

you sound like one on the internet.

i mean this as a reverse-insult - I otherwise despise the blatantly offensive use of this slur

Thx everyone. I guess i have to check my router settings. Whenever i ping an address via Antminer i get 'bad address'. I hope my next posting will be about success.
Just in case you need it:

IP of my router is 192.168.2.1.

change the DNS server to 8.8.8.8
plug a 4-pin fan into the unit. its possible it does not want to run without sensing a fan load properly (unlikely though)
2172  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 on: April 04, 2014, 03:59:31 PM
would this car be so great if it wasnt in a popular movie? Other than the wicked gullwing doors and nifty fastback design, the frontend of the delorean looks like sh-t!
*ps: im talking general deloreans - this one is in great shape and photographed well*

all i think looking at it is that its a hideous car, but damn i would love to hit 88MPH in it...just one time...and maybe once more to get home again

its not drugs its research materials ingesting this substance may have negative effects and may lead to a fatal event. if you consume 6apb seek professional help.

SWIM suggests that SWIY use it as fish food or as yard fertilizer.  My monkey says SWIM would experience energetic moods if wrongly injested, and suggests seeking professional help from a clown troup or group of sexy burlesque dancers in case of emergency

Is that duct tape on the engine?

Why keep the outside so clean if you are going to let the motor go to shit? Otherwise it looks nice.

for a '68 that engine is actually really good looking. my '02 ford is put to shame.

Beautiful car, and the engine compartment really looks great for the age of the car. overall gorgeous design, and I would be very tempted if it was in north america!

ok, i ordered the Micro SD cards, going to pick up on way home...mine probably got corrupted when i rebooted..weird.
anyway, i need  a good image and if someone can tell me the proper way to install it on the micro SD card that would be great.

I dont know if it just a copy paste, which i doubt if its going to be bootable.

use this program: http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/

its very simple.
1) put card in computer (requires an SD reader)
2) use the above program to backup an image of whats on the card to your desktop (just in case)
3) use the program to format the card (fat32 should be the default)
4) use the program to write the new image to the card - should take under a minute if the image is only 14MB
5) eject the SD, put it in your unit, and boot up

^it looks like the firmware is a .tar   -> unless the win32diskimager can use .tar, you might need to use winrar to extract the actual file
^^ the firmware is a really odd file format, '.bin.SD'  rather than the typical .iso or .img     -  maybe somebody can actually make an image of thier own SD card in a more common format?
^^^maybe the firmware can just be copy-pasted to the SD - a bit of googling seems like it may be in a format that the linux beaglebone can open and run automatically...?
2177  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: AntMiner S2 1TH/s Miner (1w/GH/s) on: April 04, 2014, 03:10:43 PM
Mine was up and running, but i rebooted the S2 to see if it would accept some changes and now i have a blank blue led screen with a red light in the top right corner...it was wrorking fine a few hours ago.

why cant it get pat the POST bootup all of a sudden?

do a full power cycle with a few seconds to cool down and let the fans come to a stop. check if the SD and boards are all seated well.

ps: one of the biggest issues with bitfury was that when using low-grade (class 8 or less) SD cards, the raspberri pi had a terrible habit of always sending readéwrites to it that could cause corrupted files if the unit reboot or shut down unexpectedly. It is entirely possible that the SD card in a BBB can do the same if powered off without any shutdown or halt command.  If you can`t figure out the issue still, go and buy a high-quality SD card (microSD?) that is class 10 or better and load it up with the firmware to try that

if the result is the same, it at least rules out the SD card, which i otherwise imagine is a weak link

so simply inserting a new bootable Micro SD would do the trick?
is there a size limitation on the Micro SD card? it came with 2GB
sounds more and more like my above scenario. Go out and buy a high-end 4GB or 8GB card. it should cost you less than $15 and is a likely source of the issue

Power cycle was performed about 100 times until 5:30 am EST and slept for 1 hour before coming in to work now.

will purchase the SD card, just need someone to upload a good solid tested Firmware.

Are thee any size limitations on the Micro SD card i can use? or just try and find an 2GB one?

thanks!

get at least 4GB. when you load the image to it size wont matter, but generally anything under 4Gb or 8GB will not be a good Class 10+ card. like i said, an 8GB class 10 should only knock you back $10-20 and will be a much better build quality.  (With the Bitfury i got about 25 reboots on one card before it failed and the other identical card only made it through about ten, and then seemed to get corrupted almost anytime the power was turned off without ending the hashing process first.

You can probably re-image the card thats in there now (might be worth trying this first), but if it is an SD issue then the real solution is a higher-end SD card that is not as succeptible to read/write errors

Dear Bitman

are you all coming out new design ?
S2 is too big for me, if you could design something around 250 to 300 ghs that will be good!!!

and hope with in this few day u can have stock for us..!!! Grin

300GH is rapidly becoming a very small hashrate - even now thats only about $15/day.

When the S1 came out it was 4.75 BTC (at about $800/BTC). If it was actually in stock it would probably be only 0.8BTC now (at $440/BTC). hopefully it makes sense that the new solution costs $3700 right now, since in 2 months it will be down to $2000

IMO bitmain is doing it right by moving to a biger design. The S1 units are great, but with some tweaks the S2 looks fantastic-er

Just ignore this thread here, it will die soon. no need for a second thread - whats the point? stick to the true pictures thread!
The opening poster is free to lock this thread. It is not a big deal unless we keep bumping it by posting here.
hopefully that wont happen
