221  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: My wallet on blockchain.info hacked even by e-mail comfirmation code !!!!!! on: August 05, 2014, 08:01:52 PM
hello all ,

I'm very surprise

I can't say anything but my wallet hacked even when i 've use 2FA including email confirmation code !!!

And i surprise that there was no click on confirmation code in my email !!!!!!

Very very intersting bussiness

Please use offline wallet and say goodbye to blockchain

Does your email provider have 2 Factor Authentication enabled? Not just the 2 Factor on the Blockchain.info website, you need it on both your email and Blockchain.info to be safe from logging. If you only had it just on the Blockchain.info website, I can imagine a keylogger in this scenario would allow someone to take your coins. Ex. Log email info and blockchain.info info, they went too blockchain while your sleeping and disabled the 2 factor, went into your email  to confirm emails then deleted them.

Otherwise someone close to you took your phone, logged in and took your coins.

Hackers don't need access to his e-mail account or his blockchain.info account in order to access his private keys.  This has happened many times to many of blockchain.info's customers and the response has essentially been: "Your computer is not secure.  Keeping your computer secure is not our responsibility, it is yours.  Because you failed keep your computer secure, your private keys were compromised."

They are correct.  What they fail to mention is keeping an online computer secure is impossible.

I have a hard time believing that only a few pairs of keys from Blockchain.info were accessed by hackers, what makes more sense is a that a few customers machines are compromised with key-loggers.

If it was that easy too access the private keys on Blockchain.info, don't you think more people would be having issues storing coins their? It sure seems like alot of people are happy with their service. If this seemed like a widespread problem, I would agree with you but honestly this seems like a failure on the customers behalf. Probably was using Windows and downloading altcoin wallets, miner executables, and visiting links on this board etc.

223  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin can be use by future Mars Inhabitants? on: August 05, 2014, 04:21:01 AM
Some day in the future we will have human settlements in Mars can they use bitcoin?

People are probably not going to take wheel barrows of Cash, and Coins to Mars when its colonized. I don't see why it can't be possible, with enough satellites or improved technology one day it might be cheap to have lowish latency interplanetary communication.
224  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How would you store >100 Bitcoins? on: August 03, 2014, 04:23:52 PM
Not that I have that many (I wish!), but how would you store >100 Bitcoins? The easy answer is just to say "create 1 offline/cold wallet and put them all in". But what about risk management? IE how do you store a very large value of coins while managing risk against hackers, forgetting passwords, the obvious need for at least 1 hot wallet, portability, easy of use, house fires, EMP bomb's (lol), or if a foreigner had to flee a country while taking no assets etc etc.

I'm looking for real responses and ideas. Please keep the trolling to a minimum Tongue

Do not store your coins in an online wallet, if you decide too remember its now possible for someone to take your coins in this scenario. Do not generate Private Keys on a machine that is connected to the the internet, its possible someone has a copy of your private key. If you generate a Private key offline, format the machine after offline and or remove this HD and lock it up/destroy it.

I would keep ~50 on a machine with an offline Armory wallet, the other 50+ would use an address that is generated on a machine that had its hard drives disassembled and destroyed. Take these Private keys generated on the machine sans HD, then hammer the private keys into a piece of Copper and Brass, write it down on a piece of paper, save it encrypted with PGP on a bunch of different USB Drives, 3 backups per type of usb drive. Put all of them in sandwhich bag and put it into a fire/waterproof safe.

None of your keys should be able to be compromised at this point except if they physically attack you, also if your storing 50+ coins offline make sure you use an address that has not spent any coins before.

As a rule of thumb if I am storing a new block of coins, I tend to buy a new drive or a brand new small/cheap netbook or similar type of device for the generation of the address and for the storage of the  key. Disabling network devices etc before hand...
225  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will you buy overstock crypto shares? on: August 02, 2014, 04:29:47 PM
If overstock issues crypto shares, it will be the first company in the world to issue shares in blockchain..

will you buy it just to participate in this historic moment?

Why not? It seems like a cool idea, its been discussed a few times here in the past. Some members have even theorized this type of exchange, it would be nice to see something like this.

I always think back to when my Grandfather told me about having the opportunity to buy shares in General Electric from a door-door salesman many many years ago, he told me he just sent the salesman on his merry way.
226  Other / Meta / Re: Time to Move Bitcoin 2.0 tech (Counterparty/Mastercoin) out of "Alt Coins" on: August 01, 2014, 04:24:55 PM
It's time to move Bitcoin 2.0 Technologies like Mastercoin and Counterparty out of the AltCoin cesspool. These are legitimate BITCOIN technologies, built on bitcoin, using bitcoin, supporting bitcoin and promoting bitcoin.

I understand the rational that AltCoins shouldn't be up here in the normal Bitcoin Talk but these days Bitcoin 2.0 Tech is a big part of the future of Bitcoin. For goodness sake Overstock is thinking about distributing Shares of their company via the blockchain!

It's time to take Mastercoin and Counterparty out of the At-Coin section. These are in many ways the future of bitcoin and it no longer makes sense to treat them like some sort of random scam coin.

I agree with this, only issue I see is who is going too make the call on what is considered just an Altcoin and what is Bitcoin 2.0 technology. If this were too happen, I could see us needing specific boards for the most popular blockchains, under the Altcoin Section or some other new section. For most of us it is pretty easy to distinguish a technology like Ether compared to a coin like DOGE.

This type of expansion reminds me of what happened to: http://forums.d2jsp.org/ - this just started out for Diablo 2 trading, but now has evolved into a trading forum for many popular games.
227  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Minimalist version of the original Bitcoin client on: August 01, 2014, 02:32:29 AM
Does anyone agree that would be interesting to create a minimalist version of the original bitcoin client that would be ideal for learning purposes. It would strip everything that is not relevant for the most simple implementation of code possible. Things like script operands and so would be stripped, making the client as thin and with as few lines of code as possible. Only the most basic features would be there but still you would have a blockchain and mining, node discovery and network, transactions processing to allow for sending and receiving BTC, address creation and wallet management.
It would still be it but it would be an extreme light code that would be ideal for learning.
Ideally with only some 4k or 5k lines of code instead of the original 12k.
It main purpose would be as a pedagogic tool for newbie coders to learn about the bitcoin internals from the standpoint of aiming to further the knowledge when you quite understand Satoshi paper but would like more exposure and understanding of the internals in terms of code.

Maybe we could have that baby both in C++ and Java (Swing).
I am willing to help in what I can, as a nerd  Wink

I remember reading two articles on Ken Shirriff's blog that is a step in that direction - http://www.righto.com/2014/02/bitcoins-hard-way-using-raw-bitcoin.html and one about Mining Bitcoins.

This goes through generating an address, and broadcasting a transaction, he does it all in Python IIRC. You should avoid pythons random generator, it is not cryptographically strong according to Ken's article. This is lacking alot of the code you mention for the Blockchain, etc.
228  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: #WARNING# NEW BLOCKCHAIN PHISHING SITE on: July 31, 2014, 08:11:53 PM
Ive seen a couple of brand new users randomly sharing this link around today. Bloody scammers.

Setting up 2-factor is a must if you have any type of online bitcoin account. You're probably safe if you do.

I agree, always opt in for 2 factor authentication on any site, and even setup 2 factor authentication for your email addresses, Dropbox has 2 Factor if you store anything on their. Enabling 2 Factor where possible is one of the first steps I have people do when I teach them how too secure their Bitcoin. Having 2-Factor should at-least eliminate most losses due to keyloggers.
229  Economy / Speculation / Re: At what price are you going to cash out your BTC stash on: July 31, 2014, 03:32:01 AM
I only intend to use BTC for purchasing goods and services and not bring them to exchanges. Already we can fly around, buy Hotels, and a number of other goods we want or need.

Instead of dumping your BTC at a certain price, why not at a certain price snap book 2 vacations and buy some new computers and monitors from Dell or Overstock, tigerdirect, newegg etc. You still get what you want largely, unless you need something you cant specifically buy with Bitcoin. This way possibly the value of the coin does not go down as quickly causing more speculation.

Granted I know you can get more coins if you buy in and get out at the right price points. Rinse repeat, but for those who just want to hodl and not worry about hitting the highs and lows.
230  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor first edition unboxing on: July 29, 2014, 06:42:03 PM
I just unboxed the highly anticipated pre-order version of the bitcoin trezor hardware wallet.

Enjoy, feedback is much appreciated!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2T26IsfwqM

I was pretty impressed with the features that the wallet already has, keep us posted with your experience. Video looked great! I want one now  Grin

Can it be backed up to paper?  Like if you drop it and a truck runs over it type of situation...

That is what the 24 seed word he wrote down was for, you could generate a 12, 18 or 24 seed word combination, this unique combination of words is used too restore the wallet balance in the future should the device be broken/lost.

232  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Bitcoin miner audited by the IRS due to previous cache of bitcoins found by IRS? on: July 28, 2014, 09:18:19 PM
http://redd.it/2byri6

Was just contacted by the IRS. They say that they want to audit my mining business. tldr: I mined a bunch of coins back when CPU mining was profitable (more on this later). More recently I started mining with some Avalon ASICs (which I declared under my business and tried to get reimbursed for taxes paid for electricity, losses due to bitcoin fluctuations, and depreciation of my assets). The IRS now (apparntly??) has looked at my mining business and found "evidence" of my earlier CPU mined bitcoins, and that they are mine (I suspect by linking my purchases from BitPay to my mailing address?) and they want to know why I haven't paid any taxes on these bitcoins. I have to meet them in person on Wednesday. What should I do? I have thrown up twice in the last hour I am so nervous.

-------------

Shocking if true...

I would probably post this to the Legal forum, their are some people in their who might be able to give some advice. I will try to get this thread moved to that board, more people should be able to help you their.

Edit: Just realized this is probably not you asking for advice, but cross posting something seen on reddit.

236  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Did anybody else get a slew of emails from blockchain.info? on: July 25, 2014, 04:01:40 AM
I just got 4 emails from blockchain about wallet backups.  One of the identifiers I recognize, the rest I don't (then again they could be old / unused ones)...  Anybody else get these?

Welcome To My Wallet

This email contains important information about your new bitcoin wallet. Be sure to keep this safe and stored separately from your password.
Login Link: https://blockchain.info/wallet/[redacted]
Notifications: Notifications Are Disabled
Confirmation Code: [redacted]
Verification Link:

Top Tip
Backup your bitcoin wallet using dropbox. It's free, easy to use and secure.

Haven't opened any new wallets recently...

Never actually used Blockchain.info for storage myself so I can't say.

I would advise the exact opposite and not use Dropbox with your wallets ever, your private keys should never live on a computer that uses the internet unless its encrypted. If you are going to use Dropbox at-least enable 2 factor authentication that helps against key-logging, but even then it someone gets onto your machine they can just grab the wallet. The wallet even though its on Dropbox, is also available on any device when its synced, try unplugging the internet and opening some of your synced files they work just fine. Anyone who gets onto your machine can take your wallet if its on Dropbox, not so secure, but free and easy to use.

238  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Book of Bitcoin on: July 24, 2014, 01:31:16 AM
Last night I was at a bi-weekly Bitcoin meet-up organized by group called "EarlyMorning" here in Milan, Italy. I have previously presented my KeyVault device (www.aeternum.in) and last night a published Bitcoin book was presented:

http://www.lswr.it/libro/bitcoin/

It's all in Italian, looks quite nice, and quite a few people were in attendance. I think there will be an official presentation on Friday but I'm not 100% sure and although it look as though you can still purchase them online, at the presentation the publisher said they were almost sold out of the first run. It's really nice to see the Italian bitcoin community growing!

The book looks pretty good, however I will have too pass on reading it as my french is quite poor. The KeyVault you have been creating, I have been following since your previous thread. Nice work so far! Can't wait to see how the final product turns out.
I think there are not many people who speak Italian who are interested in bitcoin.

Not yet, who knows maybe Italy will be interested in the future! Lets be honest if Sicily decided to sell Pizza for Bitcoin two years ago, they just might be the largest BTC holder now.  Shocked lol
239  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Just how secure is Armory? on: July 24, 2014, 01:21:24 AM
I wonder because my wallet address has a rather small number of characters... would it not be entirely possible for someone to happen upon my same wallet address?

Can someone address this issue for me please.

Thanks

As long as you setup the offline Armory wallet you should be very secure. Only ever allow a watching only copy of your offline Bitcoin Armory wallet, go online.

Also their is an entire board dedicated to Armory Wallet, where this might already be answered, I even think the dev frequents the board also: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=97.0
