221  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BFL or Avalon on: February 03, 2013, 05:34:43 PM
My prediction is that BFLs will start shipping early March.

Josh keeps backing up a week from his Feb 10th date, so I wouldn't be surprised to see another week tacked on top of that. At the very least, he has said that he will be giving people vouchers/gifts as a result of being so late, I'm going to assume this only applies to the way early june/july 2012 pre-orders.

Hey PK, what have you found so far?

Also, could anyone else using the pool right now confirm for me whether or not your accepted shares are being recorded statswise when you use the hashrack.com:8347 stratum pool?

seems to be a bug when GUIMiner and stratum works together. working on that.

Neat, so I'm not crazy! Glad to hear you found the issue and that you're looking into it = )

Hmm, this is odd. My mining stats on the site don't seem to be updating correctly.

Btw, I'm using Stratum on ports 8347: hashrack.com:8347.

When I was using GBT and getwork on port 8337: hashrack.com:8337 it was updating just fine, but my card was going idle every single time my miner submitted a share.

Well, I just signed up with my measly 440 Mhash/s. I figure I'm a new miner and this is a new pool, let's see what happens = )
227  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [708 Gh] MtRed (PPS, LP+, API, 0 FEE) STRATUM on pa.mtred.com:3333 on: February 03, 2013, 10:40:10 AM
TLDR; Awesome pool is awesome, but I don't truly know how much BTC I will earn per block found until the block is found, since estimation always gives me wacky numbers and instant share credit isn't offered.

The amount you earn is not based on how long MTRED takes to find a block. Every share you submit that is accepted by the pool is awarded the same amount (assuming you aren't using variable difficulty - otherwise you have to calculate is manually using cgminer's output). Assuming you're only submitting difficulty 1 shares, the amount you're paid will be:

B / D * ( 1 - f )
where:
B = the current bitcoin reward per block (25btc)
D =  the current network mining Difficulty (2968775.33), and
f = the fee or donation you're paying (if you pay a 3% donation, f = 0.03)

Just keep track of your shares and you'll now how much you should be paid.

Oh, calculating this myself isn't really a problem, but as any other good redditor, I'm lazy. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. I think it's just the convenience factor when you compare feature parity of Mt Red with other pools (at least as far as web UI is concerned). I'm not saying that Mt Red has to be like all of the other pools out there, I'm just saying some of the features seen in those other pools do add value.

And something interesting that caught my eye in this thread specifically, it would actually make sense as to why the current estimation is consistently off (typically twice the amount than the actual payoff).

Anyone else notice the Estimation shown on the dashboard page isn't showing the right estimation? I don't think the code has been changed to reflect the reward halving.

Also, the PPS rate on the main page definitely appears wrong. Smiley

Quick question. I've been moving around to different pools trying to figure out what the best rate of return is, and I keep finding that MtRed offers consistantly a higher PPS than any other pool.

However, that being said, I have two issues which continue to keep me looking at other pools:

1.) I don't think I've ever seen the Estimation section of the Dashboard ever give an accurate reading. This is kind of okay as it's just a visual issue really, but it bothers me that this calculation is always way off. I can see how I might be incorrect if I wasn't present for the entire 25.###### transaction, but even when I've been there from start to finish, the estimation is always at least 1/3rd to 1/2 higher than the actual payout.

2.) While the PPS may be the highest I've been able to see so far (including a 1-3% donation), its frustrating that the shares aren't awarded until after the entire section has been completed. I'm assuming that Mt. Red just doesn't have a system in place to allow BTC to be floated so I'm not really per se complaining about this, I was just curious as to why this option isn't available for this pool. I'm more so just wondering if this specific feature has been thought about. I could potentially see a feature like that making the pool more popular, especially when given that the PPS is still higher than say the guys over at 50BTC, and they generate about 7 times more speed than Red does.

Other than those two issues, I have to say that I really do like Mt. Reds pool! It was kind of cool being a redditor myself to see that not only do we have a pool, but that it's in the top ten of all pools out there. Additionally, all of the documentation on the Mt. Red website was good enough that I went from being confused about what specific options to use and miners to having a really easy grasp on how to setup miners for not just Mt. Red, but any other pool or just mining in general.

TLDR; Awesome pool is awesome, but I don't truly know how much BTC I will earn per block found until the block is found, since estimation always gives me wacky numbers and instant share credit isn't offered.
229  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Coinbase - Have you used it before? on: February 03, 2013, 02:10:36 AM
oh okay. I wasn't sure.

I wonder if anyone has done the opposite recently, I would be interested to hear how that works out. (i.e. turning your bitcoin into USD)
230  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Coinbase - Have you used it before? on: February 03, 2013, 01:11:46 AM
I signed up last Tuesday and was confirmed on Friday. Bought a few from there and am awaiting the delivery. I've heard mostly positive results from them although there are a couple of people on reddit/r/bitcoin who had bad experiences.

I was referred to it by a friend who said after your one month confirmation period it is the best way to buy bitcoins right now.

Wait, so there is also a one month confirmation after you've confirmed a phone and bank account?
231  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My experience with Avalon Asic #2 launch on: February 03, 2013, 12:03:40 AM
Seems kind of shady that Avalon will only accept BTC as payment. I could just go with BFL if they have their ASICs ready.

If you're interested, this is the current status on the BFL ASIC line.

232  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Has anyone ever purchased a physical bitcoin before? on: February 02, 2013, 11:50:30 PM
That's pretty cool.

Are you doing it for the novelty of it, or are you doing it out of the idea that it will be worth a lot more in the future?
233  Other / Beginners & Help / Has anyone ever purchased a physical bitcoin before? on: February 02, 2013, 11:25:02 PM
i.e.

Personally I think it would be pretty neat to own one.

Has anyone ever gotten a really good deal on one before? Also, what about paper notes?

hey there, I specifically joined the forum to try and get some assistance with the Mt. Red pool.

I've already sent a PM to redditorrex but I was hoping I might be able to join that thread specifically in case someone else might be able to help out in case redditorrex is too busy.

Going to say BFL.

I'm coming to the party quite a bit late, but I like that the Jalapeno is in my price range for a definite bitcoin noob like myself. I don't want to go through the trouble of purchasing bitcoins to spend 1500 dollars on a piece of hardware that may not be sustainable long term (620 Watts, just wow, I read that whole thread and they had some pretty good points as to why 450W was kind of dishonest.)

I read all of Josh's posts and he seems like a pretty sincere dude.

Yes, Avalon did get the jump because of the first two units, but I'm still waiting to hear from others when they get their units.

I opened up a coinbase account a few days ago, I was wondering if anyone has used the service before and just their general opinion of it.
237  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Introduce yourself :) on: February 02, 2013, 10:57:49 PM
New here. Started with a nvidia card that was only pulling around 30 Mhash/s but then upgraded to a 7870 and happily mining away at about 420 Mhash/s.

I've been hopping around trying to figure out which pool as the best return, so far going back and forth between 50btc and MtRed.

Pre-ordered a Jalapeno, I'll see how well that goes in the next months.

239  Other / Beginners & Help / Share Acceptance Issues with MtRed.com on: February 02, 2013, 10:31:32 PM
I wish I could post this in the appropriate topic so RedditorRex could see this, but I'm having a weird issue with the pool.

Currently I have two workers setup, one on my main computer and one on my spare computer.

The main computer is running guiminer (with the default miner) and has an ok Mhash/s rate of around 420, and Shares are being accepted without issue.

The spare computer is running rpcminer-cuda.exe through guiminer with the following setup parameters:
Host: mtred.com, Port: 8337, flags -gpu -workrefreshms=10000

It's running at a Mhash/s rate of around 28.5, but none of the shares are being accepted. I know this card isn't amazing, but it works just fine on other pools such as 50BTC and shares were being accepted without issue.

Additionally, when I try to connect the beta pool (pa.mtred.com:3333), I get constant CURL return value = 52 errors.

Is this just an issue with mtred.com and the rpcminer-cuda.exe? Or am I missing something else here.

Even if I'm running rpcminer-cude.exe through a batch file (rpcminer-cuda.exe -gpu -url=http://mtred.com:8337 -user=##### -password=##### -workrefreshms=10000), I get the same sort of behavior.
