2301  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2015-04-29] FT: Why women stay away from bitcoin on: May 03, 2015, 01:00:08 PM
I've never been invited to a "Saks conference" of Louis V conference, Victoria's Secret conference etc. Nor a bitcoin conference.

But who cares? If someone wants to go to one, they can probably get one easily. She needs to stop playing the victim and do something proactive instead of complaining.  It isn't some exclusive club.
2302  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: WTF is this? Someone found a trick for fast mining on: May 03, 2015, 12:22:35 AM
valiron if you don't mind discussing this openly than just do so, If you are concerned about the security of bitcoin than email one of the core developer your secrets.

I just did that (sending a message to a developer), and as posted before I am willing to erase my posts here.

It is not about direct security of bitcoin. It is about boosting the mining algorithm. I don't think it is a direct threat to bitcoin security. Were the first GPU miners a threat to bitcoin security?

As for discussing this openly I prefer to wait for the answer of the developer. I don't want to be accused of spreading FUD or whatever.

Even if there was some way to boost the mining algorithm by some large percentage, at most if would provide a temporary advantage to someone or some group.  Difficulty would quickly adjust, and others would discover this "secret."  This has been discussed previously too.  ;-)

You are correct that the switch from CPU to GPU was not a threat to security.  Particularly since GPUs were widely available and could be switched relatively quickly.  Satoshi attempted to encourage people (with a "gentleman's agreement") to stick with CPUs for as long as possible to encourage the ease of adoption by more people.  It was easier to get mining on a CPU than a GPU.  During that time at various points there would be people doing some GPU mining, and eventually everyone had to switch to remain in the mining game, but it didn't impact security significantly.

Hiding what this temporary advantage is - if you think that is what is going on here - is only helping this party who knows of this purported boost to the mining algorithm.  I say "purported" because significant claims require significant proof.

2303  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to check whether I have received any bitcoin from an address ever before on: May 02, 2015, 03:12:34 PM
My friend sent me some bitcoins "he says so"

But I want to confirm whether He has ever send any amount to my address ever and if he did

Then how many times and when and list of all the transactions.

Is there any way I can know this?
Some options:
1. Ask him for the transaction id then enter it on a block explorer (e.g. blockr.io  or blockchain.info)

2. Enter your bitcoin address on one of the block explorers and look at the transaction list.

2304  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: WTF is this? Someone found a trick for fast mining on: May 02, 2015, 02:20:43 PM
Nobody has found a trick for fast mining, that's just good luck. Sometimes it can be an hour or two between blocks, other times it can just be seconds between them.

...
Last, don't insult our intelligence.

There is nothing odd going on here.  There is no "pre-mine" or some "trick for fast mining".  It is like seeing a dog in the clouds.  There isn't really a dog here.
2305  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Help with armory on: May 01, 2015, 09:44:04 PM
Hi. I got this transaction BEFORE I could get bitcoin armory to get online, and now the btc won't appear in my wallet.
https://blockchain.info/tx/84067cfd607005e54a47eacd0984791ea32aac59f09130a24597ed8ce324f1b9

I know it was a stupid thing to do but I needed those quick. Is there any way to get those btc to my wallet? or did I lose those btc already?
If you have a solution please tell me :S thanks.

The client does not have to be online in order to receive bitcoin. Once its synced you should see the transaction.

Shorena is correct,  And if this doesn't show up and it is an armory specific question, then there are a lot of armory discussions in here:

I tried to run daemon from its folder with cmd , so i thought i will run daemon and make it running on server node as https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoind said , and then there s come the problem that i wrote before , the question is is it save  for me just run the bitcoin qt  after that problem , is there any corrupted or unstable running , or what should ido , sorry for the noob questions

regards

Yes, but why hit control-c?  That should interrupt it like you saw.

If you run it again, it should notify you if there is a problem.

I think OP is looking for a way to start the daemon and return to the prompt while the daemon keeps running in the background.

@OP try the following if the above is true.

Code:
start /b bitcoind -daemon

Ah.  If so, something as suggested above should work.  On Linux Or OS x one could use the screen command or something similar.

And you should be able to run it after that error - it should warn you of it finds a problem.

Are you trying to stop Bitcoin Core with a control-c?  You should use the quit command to stop the program.

Maybe I am not clear on exactly what you are asking.
2310  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [30-04-2015] CS - Bitcoin v. the Blockchain – Why It Matters on: April 30, 2015, 10:18:44 AM
The first thing about this argument that stands out is how in so making this defense of Bitcoin, the apologists of the virtual currency unit seem to be admitting that Bitcoin is in fact, in every way inferior to the Blockchain. Otherwise, they would instead counter with a whole lot of evidence to the contrary. If Bitcoin really were superior to the Blockchain technologically, financially, or otherwise, Bitcoin apologists would say things like: “Rubbish, because you can’t spend the Blockchain – Bitcoin, on the other hand, can be spent” or “You don’t know what you are talking about: the Blockchain is a worthless protocol if Bitcoin is not there to facilitate it transnationally-speaking.” But they don’t – because those things are not true.

If Bitcoin were to go to a dollar tomorrow, it’s highly likely someone would buy as many as they could in order to capture a 51% share of Bitcoin and thus be able to rewrite  – or more likely, to safeguard – the protocol technology the Blockchain. This is because the Blockchain has enormous value – in fact, we might say given that there are a maximum of 21 million bitcoins in issuance eventually that it therefore has a minimum intrinsic value of $21m, and probably a minimum intrinsic value of many times that.

That is not how a 51% attack works.  It has nothing to do with "buy[ing] as many [coins] as they could in order to capture a 51% share of Bitcoin".

If you have a backup of your system (e.g. an automatic backup), recover the wallet.dat file.  Hopefully you have it stored somewhere.
2312  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Can I retrieve My Bitcoin? on: April 29, 2015, 01:22:13 PM
Hey everyone,

I'm sorry for the possibly elementary question... but scenario:

My BlackBerry Z10 had some bitcoin on it using the app "Bitcoin Wallet".  I transferred the BTC from another phone, to the current Z10... but unfortunately the Z10 died.  It wont boot.. I cant access the data..etc..  Is there a way retrieve my money through the block chain... or any other way?

On Another topic... I stopped mining BTC about two years ago and was part of the whole Flower Tech Scam... I've been out of the loop for quite some time...But i see the difficulty rates decreasing... Could mining for small individuals become feasible again?

Thank you for any help...!

Hi,
1. If you have a backup of the private key somewhere, you can retrieve it.  Perhaps you have a backup of the phone and could restore it to a new phone?  If it is a lot and worth it, you could probably extract the internal storage (16GB?) and get someone to pull the data from it.  I don't think that would be inexpensive though, and that assumes Blackberry doesn't encrypt it.  Ditto the SD card to see if it is stored there.

2. Second question, how did you transfer it to the new phone?  Did you import the private key to the new phone or send to a new address?  If you just transferred the private key, it could be (probably is) on your old phone and you could send to a new address from there.  If you sent to a new address on the new phone, then this wouldn't work.

3. This is just my opinion, but as difficulty increases begin to level off and increase closer to the growth in mining (e.g. when ASICs have reached state of the art fabrication density) mining could become feasible for the individual again.  E.g. when bitcoin went from CPU to GPU, once it leveled off, mining with GPUs was feasible even though CPU no longer was.  I believe it will be again, but it won't be nearly as easy since the number of people involved has increase significantly.

:-)
2313  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Small Block on: April 28, 2015, 11:18:03 PM
This is actually interesting...

With these fast asics, they can find blocks so fast now, it is unpredictable when they will be found...

Recently, I had to wait 2 HOURS for a transaction to get 1 confirmation...

These are two different issues. Block times are adjusted every (roughly) two weeks so that the block frequency will be close to an average of every ten minutes.  Your confirmation time will vary based on many factors, including fees paid, number of transactions queued, the number of transactions the people who find the blocks decide to include in each block, whether the transaction included inputs that were unconfirmed etc.
2314  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Small Block on: April 28, 2015, 11:15:23 PM

Miners can pick whatever transactions they wish to included in blocks, even zero (within the upper limits).
2315  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What should the government do to make women start using Bitcoin? on: April 28, 2015, 01:45:50 PM
This very whiny article ( http://fusion.net/story/124655/why-bitcoins-male-domination-will-be-its-downfall/ ) says that there are not enough women using Bitcoin. So, just as most stupid reporters that talk about "inequality" and other collectivist drivel, they would likely want the government to step in and do something.

What do you believe the punishment should be for women who do not use Bitcoin which would satisfy the reporter's thirst for government power?

Maybe the government can force the "Bitcoin CEO" to stop checking IDs of people who want to get involved in bitcoin?  :-)
2316  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Sync Stuck - Bitcoin Core (linux) on: April 27, 2015, 10:13:55 PM
-snip-
Thanks, looks like good info.

Sadly, I already downloaded bootstrap.dat and tried loadblock....

How long should this take? There is no indication of progress..

Somewhere between 30 minutes and a couple of hours. From the bootstrap.dat it mainly depends on diskspeed unless you have a very slow CPU.

With SSD being much faster than a HDD.
2317  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2015-04-23] Fusion: Why Bitcoin’s male domination will be its downfall on: April 27, 2015, 07:27:26 PM
Does that mean that the "Bitcoin CEO" has to stop asking to see IDs before letting people get involved in bitcoin?  Or is this another case when China is going to ban bitcoin because there are not enough women "allowed" in?
2318  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Sync Stuck - Bitcoin Core (linux) on: April 27, 2015, 02:03:35 PM
What version are you running? 0.10.0? (Or 0.10.1?)

It is v0.10.0

You might give 0.10.1 a try.

Thanks, I'm currently testing that.......

Is downloading the bootstrap.dat an option? (If the new version of Bitcoin Core not solve the problem?).

0.10.x should be faster syncing than using the bootstrap option.

Are you running on a SSD or HDD?  (You might have to restart it IF there was corruption in the download before.  If you are using an SSD, it should not take long, you can always add specific nodes to connect to - Shorena has a list of fast nodes if that becomes needed).
