1401  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-05-24]Bitcoin Scaling Agreement Officially Met: Segwit + 2MB Hard Fork on: May 27, 2017, 11:56:00 PM
Things are already approaching the level of insanity for Bitcoin scaling problem. It is about time that Bitcoin stakeholders show the whole world that they are up for the challenge. Bitcoin is supposed to be faster than lightning and cost-efficient but what is happening right now is damned the opposite.
With the average time between blocks of 10 minutes bitcoin was never supposed to be lightning fast, any credit card or cash is faster than bitcoin when making transactions face to face, bitcoin really shines when it comes to sending money over long distances at a low cost but the mining fees keep getting higher because there are too many transactions going on.

Confirmation time on a credit card is on the order of months - that is much slower than 10 minutes.
1402  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: payment received before Synch completed but HD not big enough for 122gig data on: May 27, 2017, 07:30:47 PM
the scan cam up when i sent him the i think URI code and bition address, i tried a file recovery but apparently i was thorough, is there anything he can do on his end?

Nothing that I can think of on his end. Without the private keys the coins are lost.
1403  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: payment received before Synch completed but HD not big enough for 122gig data on: May 27, 2017, 04:28:16 PM
hey no i don't have the wallet dat. i wiped that portion of i removed bitcoin from the application support section. i am seeing all this stuff now and wished i hadn't, i don't have the private key info.

And you emptied that trash?  If so, can you try a file recovery tool?  E.g. DiskWarrior?   If you wish to try to scan the drive, you would want to stop using the computer now so as to avoid writing more information to the disk (hdd or ssd) so as to avoid potentially writing over that file.

That is the main option right now.

I am curious what "scan" you sent him?  Was it a QR code of the public key?  If so, that won't do any good.
1404  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: payment received before Synch completed but HD not big enough for 122gig data on: May 27, 2017, 03:48:19 PM
Do you have the wallet.dat?

Probably is here:
~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/wallet.dat

If so you would have the private keys.
1405  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-05-24]India’s Government Seeks Public Comments on How Bitcoin Should Be Re on: May 25, 2017, 09:57:30 PM
Given India thinks that bills larger than 5 $ or euros are "large bills" and people can't be trusted to have them, I can't imagine that they embrace any type of regulation that favors liberty.

They like to control people and bitcoin is anti-control.
1406  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: After transaction is confirmed coins get sent to someone else's address on: May 25, 2017, 04:19:49 PM

Now I see why customer support is low, this wasn't coinbase. 😀

If there are support forums on there, maybe there are people there who would know the answer?

Edit: it appears there are forums there.
1407  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: After transaction is confirmed coins get sent to someone else's address on: May 25, 2017, 04:01:07 PM
ok thank you, that is what i figured but since the transaction shows 60 confirmations but the coins still dont show in my wallet yet and then i see them being sent to another address I started to get a little worried. Is it somewhat normal to get lots of confirmations but still not have the coins displayed in your wallet?

The fact that you sent them to some web site that is depositing them in an account for you is an important detail.  ;-)

As far as if they haven't shown up in your wallet there yet, that would also depend on the web site.  To me, it seems strange that they wouldn't show up at least as "pending" instantly (in a second or two) and then "confirmed" after 3-6 confirmations.  If you can share the web site, that might be helpful to know.

Contacting this web site's support team would be an important step if this type of question isn't covered in their FAQ.

1408  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-05-24]Bitcoin Will Hit $1 Million in 5-10 Years, Says PayPal Director on: May 25, 2017, 03:57:42 PM
...
Total Gold market is 8 Trillion USD. Is that realistic to you? Not to me. A realistic target should be around 50k$/btc at first, then we talk.

I think you are right, $50k would have to come first and bitcoin will have to continue to prove itself to get mass adoption.

But, it really depends on the use cases. If use cases continue to expand and markets too, then anything is possible.   One huge use case is protecting your wealth from authoritarians who want capital controls or are inflating the value of the currency away - essentially at lot like gold's use cases except that it is also completely portable if you need to leave, e.g., Venezuela, China, Iran, Argentina, etc without having your gold/silver etc confiscated at the border.  Or even if you want to stay and just protect your wealth from the ravages of inflation in 3 of those countries.

Obviously bitcoin has many more like remittances, micro-payments (if LN is available), etc, but the digital gold use case alone is a huge.

Hello everyone!
I am new to bitcoin so I apologize if my question seems silly but i sent some coins to a website and due to the confirmations taking a long time I started checking the status with blockchain and blockomonics.
Now that the transactions have been confirmed I can see on the tree chart on blockchain that the address i sent them to almost immediately sent them to someone else's address and from there to another and another etc.
Why is this? it is normal?

It depends on the web site and who is using it etc.  Maybe they were buying something or moving them to cold storage or something else. Smiley
1410  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Running really old version of Core(0.9.1). How to update to the most recent one? on: May 25, 2017, 12:05:40 PM
I have been out of the bitcoin game for awhile now and wanted to update my wallet for obvious reasons, also due to the alert keys warning I get(no idea what that is.) I just want to make sure that I don't mess it up and have to jump off a skyscraper Grin

Make a backup or two (or 3) of the wallet.dat before doing anything, upgrading should be easy though.  Also, be sure to scan for viruses.

This has some info about the message:
https://bitcoin.org/en/alert/2016-11-01-alert-retirement

1411  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: lost encrypted wallet backup, but have an older back up of that encrypted wallet on: May 25, 2017, 12:00:39 PM
If you have the wallet.dat (assuming bitcoin core), you should have the private keys, so you should be okay assuming the backup isn't several years old - 99% likely. Make another backup (or two) now though to be extra safe.

If you sent some of the coins, some remaining ones could have gone to a change address but it is likely in the wallet.dat too. (And if it is a recently created HD wallet, even better.)
1412  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am pretty confident we are the new wealthy elite, gentlemen. on: May 25, 2017, 10:06:32 AM
I couldn't think of a better place to post this and I think it's fitting here. I just sold my stash of 6 years at $2,200. I just couldn't stand to wait any longer and I'm not greedy. Bitcoin definitely made me rich (not really rich elite but rich enough for me). Everything I own is paid off (houses, cars, Horizon 350 Four Winns boat - everything). I have everything I want and more. Hookers and beer for the rest of my life.

I hope bitcoin goes to a million dollars each and all of you get everything you want. I won't be disappointed if it does (because I kept a couple for a rainy day  Wink ). I'll still be around here to make fun of you when required (maybe not as much as before though). Good luck to you all and don't forget that it's not illegal to sell your coins.

Yeah.. right.. we have seen you around with your selling coins assertions a lot - christmas blah blah blah.. and now, supposedly the big cashing out.

Good of you to cash out on an uptrend, but seems a bit premature to sell a large portion of your holdings... and also, what else are you going to buy into?  oh?  stocks and bonds and real estate?  Bitcoin is likely going to continue to be a decent long term investment, and possibly better than other investments that you have, so it is good to keep some percentage in bitcoin, even if you might have some other asset classes in which you are more bullish...

Let's say 1% in bitcoin or 5% in bitcoin or 10%..

I invested a bit more than 10% in bitcoin in comparison with fiat related investments; however, my bitcoin investment is now more than 40% of my allocation - based on appreciation of bitcoin.. sure it could be wise of me to reallocate to 10% or some other moderate stance - but cashing out completely seems either foolish or you are merely a bank troll trying to get others to sell their coins.... which you have done various times before

No sweetheart, I'm old and that means I'm done. Ever since I turned 60 I go to my annual checkup and bite my nails waiting for the doctor to come in and tell me the bad news. So far the worst thing he's said is that I have type 2 diabetes. Before he tells me I have the big C I'm gonna relax, drink beer and fish. You can have fun fucking with people on this forum and waiting 20 years to sell your coin but I'm not going to.

Have you ever thought about when you were going to sell? How much is enough? $5k each, $10k each, $100k each?  I have though about it a lot lately and I'm not getting any younger. I can't afford to wait 20 years because I'll be joining Hal Finney in cryo-freeze long before that. Sell a few and enjoy life before it's too late.

Alcor or CI? I know Hal went Alcor. Just curious.

I get what you are saying. For the first time, I sold a few coins this week (~1%).

1413  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Recovery of the lost bitcoins or wallet info on: May 24, 2017, 08:35:24 AM
Thanks for your help.
I still did not get my wallet recovered. All of the manuals are with wallet words. I dont keep those words.
The files I have on my PC are like that:
1. bitcoin-wallet-keys-2014-02-09
2. mbhd-7xxxxxxc-8490866e-bxxxxxx8-59e26781-xxxxxxxx-20170522102537.zip.aes
There are some numbers instead of the x...
How exactly I can recovery the wallet?

Did you try (re)-installing Bitcoin Wallet and then exporting the keys/sweeping from there to a different wallet?  The software is on github.
1414  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-05-22] WannaCry Disclosure: It Was Developed to Promote Bitcoin on: May 23, 2017, 07:05:36 PM
Of course it's just a George's opinion (as an expert), you may to agree or to disagree with it.

With the title "WannaCry Disclosure: It Was Developed to Promote Bitcoin" - which implies fact.

Whether someone is an "expert" or not, one has to rely on facts to base an opinion, otherwise their opinion is just that, opinion and any expertise is irrelevant.

send your files to alistermaclin@mail.ru
i'll try to help but without obligations

Hello.
Thanks for your answer. I thought you can help me how to fix this on my PC. I am not sure if I can send those files to you. I dont know what kind of information they keep.

The best rule of thumb is to never send files to people if you want to ever see the bitcoins again.
1416  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Lost wallet.dat on bitcoin-qt 0.8.6 on: May 23, 2017, 02:51:33 PM
Hi there, we had a number of bitcoins in a local installation of bitcoin-qt in 2014. Since then, the data directory in the user profile (%APPDATA) has been delete on the PC resulting in deletion of the wallet.dat
If the wallet.dat was encrypted with a passphrase is there any relation to this passphrase and the private key allowing recovery? Is there any where else that this file or a copy may reside?

the harddrive on the computer is now full from re-downloading the whole chain and creating a new wallet.dat file making data recovery near impossible. Have used the public key to scan the chain and this definitely appears to be a new wallet as there are no transactions.

CE

The private keys are in the wallet.dat and the passphrase will be completely different from the private key(s) is there is no relationship between the two.  The private keys could also reside in a backup, if you have one of the computer.

You could try scanning the disk to see if by some miracle the wallet.dat is still there, but if you have written a lot to the hard disk with a re-download of the block chain, that is a small chance.

Other than that you are probably out of luck.

1417  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-05-22] WannaCry Disclosure: It Was Developed to Promote Bitcoin on: May 23, 2017, 11:40:43 AM
The WannaCry malware, that attacked 200,000 victims in at least 150 countries, exploiting a vulnerability of the Windows operating system, was developed to promote Bitcoin.

This malware demanded owners pay a ransom in Bitcoin to free their devices from the virus.

As strange as it may seem, I, George Gor, think the malware was developed to promote Bitcoin to a wider number of users and to raise its price on the market. Who might have ordered such a virus? We can only guess. However, the idea is making some sense as WannaCry engages some mechanisms of PR which indeed might cause the growth of Bitcoin popularity.

You can read the full article and take part in the discussion here: https://coinidol.com/wannacry-disclosure-bitcoin/

Pathetic.  Presenting as fact some opinion without any evidence.
1418  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Feasibility on reducing block time on: May 20, 2017, 04:13:20 PM
Instead of a direct on-chain scaling to bump up to 2, 4, or 8MB, etc. How  difficult is it to reduce avg block time to 5mins from 10mins while maintaining 1mb block size?

Changing the block time is a hard fork, so it is the same difficulty as increasing the block size.  Both "only" require changing a parameter in the code.

In practice, these changes always require other associated changes.

Reducing the block time would mean difficulty updates happen every week instead of every 2 weeks.  You could make it so that they happen every 2 weeks by doubling the number of blocks per adjustment.

The minting fee would also need to be considered.  If you don't change it then miners get twice as much per day for mining but it halves once a year instead of once every 2 years.

Making any of these changes could cause unforeseen problems.

The problem with increasing the block size is not coding, there is politics because there are different viewpoints on the risks.  Not everyone agrees that the risks are worth it or what are the most important risks.

One correction (which I am sure was just a typo):  Currently it halves every 4 years and this would make it halve every 2 years.

Likewise, it would change the last bitcoin minding date from somewhere around 2140 to perhaps half the remaining time.  Cutting the block time in half is purely a political question, and the probability of it happening on the main chain is essentially zero.

1419  Economy / Speculation / Re: just buy it already, strategy! on: May 20, 2017, 12:42:58 PM
these days a lot of my friends are asking me about whether they should invest in bitcoin and is it too late, ...
you can already see a lot of their similar questions on bitcointalk.

of course the first thing to know is to "always invest what you can afford to".

but second thing i say is "just buy bitcoin already".

i know a lot of people who have been waiting and waiting for a long time just for price to reach $#### and then buy bitcoin. and each day they are missing opportunities to buy. and each day that passes they have to pay more or buy less bitcoin with same money.

yes there is a chance of drop, that is why the first rule exists. and besides the chances of rising in long term will always be much higher than the chances of not rising or dropping.

so just make up your mind, either buy now and accept the consequences or stay away now and again accept the consequences.

the world won't stop for you to make a decision, nor will it change to your liking.

I remember seeing similar sentiments in 2011 and fall 2010! "Is it too late?" "Is dollar parity (later $10 per coin) a bubble?" Then later the "$30 per is unsustainable."  "You'll be able to buy more later at a lower price."

Sure, there is a lot of volatility, but the long term trend has been way up and if usage (for anything - transactions, capital preservation etc) continues to grow, the fiat price will continue to do so.

1420  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: HELP! I think someone hacked my account?? It says... on: May 20, 2017, 12:11:41 PM
You'll need to provide some information like transaction IDs and/or wallet addresses if you want anyone to try and investigate what is happening with your transactions...

Also, what wallet software were you using?

And what OS?  Is this an online wallet?
