The follow books may offer up clues:

I don't think the authors of those books have any personal connections to the subjects of your current investigation (which has been outstanding).
242  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Butterfly Labs CEO 25 Million USD Mail Fraud — A Concise Summary of Evidence on: September 22, 2012, 07:01:43 PM
Man, its sad there's still people defending all this bullshit. I guess i would be pretty sour too if i threw all my money into a bottomless pit, which is starting to look more bleek by the second.

ITS CALLED A LONG CON PEOPLE.... has everybody already forgotten that pirate paid out on time for almost a year before taking off with millions.

I called pirate a scam from the very first time I heard of him. And even though I have no pre-order with BFL, I am biased and hope they are fully legit because, as another poster said, a BFL scam on the heels of a pirate scam would be devastating to the market sentiment.

I won't be placing a pre-order, even if they produced a demo video. I'm not a big miner. But I would still bet that they'll ship an "ASIC" product that out-performs the FPGAs at lower cost. I'm no expert on chip design, but it seems a reasonable task to outsource the manufacture of an ASIC mining chip to produce a mining rig. Maybe from a company like eASIC back in 2008:

Quote
“You need a team of 50 experts to design a high-end ASIC.”
“By the time you factor in NRE and mask costs, ASIC costs a lot more unless your volume is in the millions.”
“ASIC has very long design cycles.”
“ASIC is a high-risk game that only a small number of companies can afford.”
The list goes on and on.  That’s why ASIC design starts have been on a steady decline for more than a decade.
What if there were an ASIC technology that didn’t have the usual drawbacks like high NRE, long design times, high risk, and complex tool flows?
This week, eASIC went a long way toward implementing that vision, announcing their new 45nm, “Nextreme-2,” “Zero Mask-Charge” ASIC family. [...] Since this is a single mask layer, there is very little cost or risk involved in programming/customizing the devices.  Furthermore, in early production, the via layer can be programmed via e-beam, allowing for very small (as in 1 unit) production runs.  The company can easily produce a wafer with many designs from different companies, so there is no “minimum quantity” issue for setting up the fabrication process.

Ordering chips from eASIC? that sounds reasonable. Sharing profits of 7% per week with random people on the internet? that doesn't sound reasonable.

Its a shame this Sonny guy is involved and that his father is who he is, and Inaba's agitation in this thread is a total PR failure for the company.

I know everyone has fresh burns from pirate. But when a LONG CON is so long that it becomes indistinguishable from a legitimate business, then its a legitimate business.
243  Other / Off-topic / Re: Laissez Faire City (a BFL connection(?), et al.) on: September 22, 2012, 05:02:46 PM

Wow, that is some father. I wonder why Nevada was his chosen state to be governor, lol.

How can BFL_Sonny say almost nothing about his father, other than that he became enamored with him as an adult?
244  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Butterfly Labs CEO 25 Million USD Mail Fraud — A Concise Summary of Evidence on: September 22, 2012, 04:48:12 PM
He was whitelisted, here's the thread. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=110868.0

He locked it for now.

Running a sportsbook is one thing, there are winners and losers and the bookie keeps a vig. But I guess its a slippery slope to a sweepstakes/lottery fraud. I wonder how many winners there were out of $25m? Well, Sonny says it was a "roaring success".

And then there's the whole Laissez Fair City (LFC) thing, but I can't make sense of the scattered references I'm seeing. Can someone summarize it for me?

I'm also curious about his position/role at BFL. How did he come to be involved and what is his role there now? I don't see why BFL as a company would need to employ an expert in "jurisdictional arbitrage" or whitelabel sportsbook software platforms.

Sonny has given his side.. Its time to move on..

Where has Mr. Sonny Cris Vleisides given his side?

All we have from Inaba/BFL_Josh is this:

As for Sonny K, hopefully BFL_Sonny will address that when he posts.  As I understand it, he will be working on a response this weekend.
246  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How to use 2-factor auth on mtgox, even without a smartphone on: September 22, 2012, 11:59:05 AM
Is it that if you have no phone you have to get a yubikey instead?
if you have no phone, you can use the html5 app.

And if you don't have a graphical front-end at all (text-only terminal console), there is a python script on github that does the hmac hash calculation for you.

h

btw, if you use that python script, you have to add padding to the "secure private key" mtgox provides (other google auth apps will accept the secret key without padding). So "RPAAJZCGOW7NSAAJCFRCCHIN44" with base32 padding becomes "RPAAJZCGOW7NSAAJCFRCCHIN44======".

Code:
>>> import hmac, base64, struct, hashlib, time
>>> import onetimepass as otp
>>> my_secret = "RPAAJZCGOW7NSAAJCFRCCHIN44======"
>>> otp.get_totp(my_secret)

Haha I'm not assuring anyone of anything anymore. I simply do not care what people think.  There is literally no way to satisfy the forums, so there is no reason to continue to try.  People are either connected to reality or they are disconnected from it (take Franky as a wonderful example) and nothing I say is going to change that.  I can present all the evidence in the world that the sky is blue and tons of people here will still scream that it's green.

Franky may not know the difference between an FPGA, an ASIC, and a structured ASIC. But you are making the situation even worse. A blanket "this is ridiculous" or "this is beyond absurd" is not a response. Either do some PR or STFU.

edit: the issue here is Sonny's $25M fraud. You haven't addressed that all. Instead you are here just further stirring up shit.
248  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Re: Butterfly Labs CEO 25 Million USD Mail Fraud — A Concise Summary of Evidence on: September 21, 2012, 10:56:43 PM
You know what I wonder?  Are all you whiners crying about a scam going to pony up an apology when the ASICs ship?

My prediction:  Crickets.

I hope someone bumps this particular post after we ship the ASICs, I want see the rush of apologies.  I'll hold my breath.

Why would anyone need to apologize for voicing perfectly reasonable concerns today? Even if ASICs do ship as promised, the concerns were perfectly reasonable and deserve explanations.

Agreed. Inaba's response was uncalled for.

I was considering placing a pre-order, but I will certainly not knowing that the CEO was previously indicted in a $25m fraud. Looking forward to BFL_sonny's response.
249  Economy / Service Discussion / How to use 2-factor auth on mtgox, even without a smartphone on: September 21, 2012, 10:50:02 PM
So, bitcoins are now probably the most wanted target of hackers and trojan-botnet operators in search of easy profit. They are the most easily monetized score of digital theft, valued at face in BTC while credit card numbers are sold for pennies on the dollar.

Every time you download programs, or re-install windows using that iso you got a from a torrent, chances are ever greater that there is a trojan/virus. The chances are also good that it will go Fully UnDetected by most, if not all, Anti-Virus programs (botnet operators use a "FUD crypter" for this). If so, your mtgox password will be captured and added to the botnet database of login/password form submissions.

Then dude takes your mtgox funds.

I lost roughly 2000 USD from my MT.Gox account at 08:40 JST on the 31th of may 2012.

A lot of that going on.

"MtGox account got cleared out"

"All BTC disappeared from my Mt. Gox account"

Another:

And another:
"My mtgox account got compromised, what can I do?"

And on other services as well.  Here same thing happened to some GLBSE users:

In none of these was the person using multi-factor authentication.  Mt. Gox has had Yubikey support for a while.  Mt. Gox accounts now support Google Authenticator:

But not you! Because you used 2-factor auth for withdrawals and dude only has your mtgox password, not your OTP private key.

Step 1:

Go to your mtgox security center and click "ADD NEW" under software authenticators.

Take a screenshot of this window, print it out, and lock it in a safe. Or copy/paste the secure private key and save it encrypted to a USB and lock that in a safe. Write it on a post-it, memorize it and then eat the post-it. Whatever you do, keep it secret but don't lose it.

Step 2:

If you have an android phone, install the google authenticator app for android. If you have an iOS device (iPod touch, iPad, iPhone), install the iOS app.

If you have neither, you can use this html5 google authenticator app. Download the zip file, extract it and open the index.html in your browser.

Now click the plus sign and add your secure private key. You are only running a local html5 app, so your secure private key is not being shared with anyone. You can even do this on an offline computer; you don't have to be online to use your secure private key to generate a one-time-passcode.

Step 3:

Use your generated one-time-passcode in the mtgox security center.

This passcode changes every 30 seconds. That's how long you have to type it into mtgox and "save" your new 2-factor auth system.

Step 4:

Add your new 2-factor method to "Withdrawal" to protect withdrawals.

Step 5:

Also add it to "Security Center". Otherwise, anyone with your login password can simply go to security center and remove your 2-factor auth protection.

Now a one-time-passcode is needed to remove 2-factor from withdrawals.

Step 6:

Your withdrawals are now protected.

CAVEAT on using the google authenticator html5 app:

Obviously, if you use your 2-factor "secure private key" on the same computer, it can be stolen along with the password. So pray that dude's trojan doesn't keylog everything, just login form passwords to sites like mtgox. Or use the google authenticator app on an offline computer. If you're ultra-paranoid, remember that your secure private key could be captured at set-up time when done on an insecure computer.

Also, the html5 app saves the secure private key to html5 localStorage, so click the (x) after use to remove it. Or clear it from the browser's cache/localStorage.

*sigh* You guys are ridiculous.

That's all that shows under account history.

Notice that the most recent transaction of 13aZs3 was on Sep 15, leaving it with 14 BTC. Conveniently, this is the exact account balance on dropt's screenshot.

Last deposit I made to SR, coins were moved from the deposit addy within hours (leaving my SR balance with the deposit amount, and the addy balance at 0).

This is a fake screenshot (firebugged / photoshopped).

Regarding announcing a transaction to the SR address, what exactly do you want me to do?  Do you want to pick a (smallish) number and I'll send that exact amount there and send it back as soon as it confirms?

You would have to prove that you own one of the input addresses for a transaction that goes to 13aZs3.

Also, you FUD-spamming assholes consider yourselves 'honest', but none of you have contributed shit except to spam other people's threads.
If we stopped even one person from throwing their money away, we've contributed plenty  Wink
To clarify, I didn't think Patrick was running a ponzi - I had a small deposit with him at one point after all which I withdrew after the pirate debacle as I needed funds for other things and wanted to hold back for a few months, let the tide go out and see who was swimming naked - having seen him buying bitcoinmax accounts and knowing that he had personal bullshit&trust exposure I was concerned that he might be significantly over-exposed.

The problem is, people want to believe that they can have money and success and great investment returns without doing any research or putting in any effort.
When people really want to believe something, their logic becomes a bit skewed. It reminds me very much of this comic:

"Hey guys, I have a scheme that pays 7% per week with low risk!"
"Oh yeah? Prove it."
"YOU CAN'T PROVE THAT I DON'T!"

Asking the questions that any sensible investor who's not just a gullible ATM for scammers will ask is not "spam".

I keep a healthy percentage in cold storage, the rest are allocated toward my best efforts at supporting the economy. Without some trust and mutually beneficial relationships, there is no economy.  But above all, trust enables people to do business with each other. Doing business is what creates wealth.

Depositing coins to the highest rated dood offering x% per week is not "doing business", and its not supporting the economy. Its a transfer of wealth to hyip scammers. Do you really want to support the economy, or are you just looking for the highest easy return?

What "real" business" do you invest in? or do you just leave it in the blockchain?

Check out Project Development. There are lots of potential products and people working on real businesses there. (I have one of my own that I work on).
253  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Hiring C++ and JS programmers on: September 21, 2012, 02:51:22 PM
yeah it is obvious isn't it?

jed mccaleb is one of my favorite hackers. he has the skills in writing native code, has a real p2p sensibility (edonkey/overnet), was an early 'partner' in (probably creator of) mt gox. you don't hear much from him, he doesn't gloat on the internet. i've never even been able to find a photo of him. he just does these great, world-changing works and hardly anyone ever knows he was behind them.

this is the way to do things, in my opinion. cut the noise, cut the bullshit, just act.

Plus he had that special account on mtgox which could assign itself unlimited coin.  Tongue

Looking forward to hearing more about this project..

How long will you let this guy keep stringing you along?

Cooperate means he's started making payments. Pretty simple.

How much of how many? At the current rate, how long until full repayment?

respect. Next time, how about restricting operator privileges in #bitcoin-otc to more neutral parties? Not a user running the biggest scam on the scene.
257  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] MOVETO.FUND - MoveTo Growth Fund on: September 17, 2012, 02:45:05 AM

You were all warned that exactly this would happen. But instead of keeping the bitcoin safe in the blockchain, refused to believe it and chose to do absolutely nothing. Just kept waiting and waiting, until it was gone. How is that commendable?

Bullshit.  cytokine and the investors in this fund (myself included) were very aware of the pirate risk and did everything possible to avoid exposure. Keeping bitcoin safe in the blockchain? really?  So instead of growing the economy and supporting bitcoin businesses we're supposed to hoard it all away where it does nothing but sit there?  The problem so far has been fraudulent activities by trusted members, not people wanting to support the fledgling economy and willing to take some risk.

very aware of the pirate risk? I have quotes of cytokine saying a pirate default was "highly unlikely". He did everything he could to stay in denial because the returns were Too Good To Be True.

Furthermore, giving away your bitcoin to HYIP scammers is not "growing the economy" nor "supporting bitcoin businesses", unlikely you call ponzi scamming a business. Unless you do due diligence and invest in *real* projects, not "arbitrage" and "mining farms". Maybe when so-called investors stop being so willing to get scammed, it will be worthwhile for entrepreneurs to start actual businesses instead of more HYIP funds.

Do you really think vescudero is going to return all your deposits?

Make your escrowed bet for or against his default and win a lot of Bitcoins!!  http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=671

Account registered just 8 hours ago, just 7 posts in and is already betting 299 BTC on vescudero paying out. Clearly a shill.

Well, at least he gives the non-believers a way to put their money where their mouth is.

Yea, I got this PM too (addressed to "Hi Gavin")

Vescudero's scheme has only been operating since late June (and at that time he was still competing with pirate). For a ponzi that short, it would be very easy for him to pay everyone back with interest, and try to make some profits from this little bet. Then re-open later, after proving "not a ponzi" to everyone the first time.
260  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] MOVETO.FUND - MoveTo Growth Fund on: September 15, 2012, 07:54:29 AM

Yes I know pirate has screwed up a lot of people, and a lot of deposit takers lied and were secretly, non-transparently and dishonestly investing more than they could afford into him (and we're definitely affected by this), but please try not to take it out on me. We will eventually come out of this credit crunch and survive and grow. I will not stop with my mission by running the spreadsheet every day to decide on new positions, to mark the NAV according to the 5-day average trading price for each asset we own, and help take steps to increase transparency in the bitcoin investment world. I believe that, thus far, I have set a good example by being honest and putting my own money on the line right there with my investors. Despite the fact that some were dishonest with me, I have always been honest - it's in my own long-term interest to be honest anyway, not to mention that even if I were dishonest, I would have my assets frozen by Nefario and be immediately doxed by other members. All scammers deserve prison in my opinion, and nothing less. They make me literally sick to my stomach.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm pretty pissed right now at what is going on in the community.

Thought this was worth quoting because it is a common experience, and probably in higher proportion with Bitcoin than normal currencies.  Yes, some people lied and passed funds into Pirate, and others simply screwed up or stole funds sucking a lot of coins out of the economy.  I can understand the shit cytokine is experiencing because I've had it as well, and sticking with it rather than hiding or claiming some "hack" is to be commended.

You were all warned that exactly this would happen. But instead of keeping the bitcoin safe in the blockchain, refused to believe it and chose to do absolutely nothing. Just kept waiting and waiting, until it was gone. How is that commendable?
