241  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If only.... on: May 11, 2017, 04:41:47 PM
I hope you have found a good job and start having income... I also lost my job around that time but I managed to pull through without needing to sell my coins...

The good thing was that you didn't have to worry about bitcoin price after you have sold them- that was a dark and depressing period for HODLers when the price keep dropping and everyone was saying that "bitcoin is dead!"...

Another good thing is that you are back! It is still not too late to invest in bitcoin again and have faith in it. HODL if you can afford to, and soon you will get back what you have lost...

Thanks.  Yes I've been in work ever since and recovered my savings pretty well however I'm much more conservative now.  Saving slowly but surely.  I remember the "bitcoin is dead" days very well as I sold just before they hit the bottom.

Good luck man, never lose faith and look on it as one of life's many challenges. This time around if you are rebuilding your btc savings keep some ££ too for emergencies so you won't have to force sell.
242  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Poloniex caused the market to crash on: May 11, 2017, 12:50:58 PM
This topic seems to be recurring cause Poloniex has recurring problems with their servers. I personally believe it is not malicious but it does give rise to speculation of manipulation each and every time.

Correct. This should have been fixed by now. Poloniex has a lot of customers and if this is a recurring issue with them, others might move to other trusted and more reliable trading platform. I also believed this is not purposely done, but you can removed speculation from people if they issue keeps coming back after they have resolved it already. They have profited enough that they have the funds to hire technical experts to help them diagnose and find a permanent solution to their problem.

Agreed, I think ultimately if they don't fix it they will lose a lot of customers to other exchanges and that will hurt their profits more than the possible gains they might have had from any market manipulation. I think like many exchanges before them they aren't just technically competent enough to scale up fast enough to keep up with the crypto world.
243  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XRP] Ripple Speculation on: May 11, 2017, 12:48:55 PM
XRP is so volatile investments therein are no better than a slotmachine. People keep referring to banks using it, except they are using the company behind it and not the XRP itself. Only a matter of time now before the general market realizes and it crashes. It is not even a real cryptocurrency, does anyone really believe the total market cap (including unreleased premined coins) is more than that of btc?

Flame away at me XRP fans.

You're person number 10 million whose said that in this thread.

And again they are using XRP.

Any other method of using Ripple is slower and more expensive.

XRP being sold by SBI this summer in Japan.

Every non XRP transaction burns XRP supply as well. Like using Ripple to exchange USD to CAD that will also burn XRP supply

A minimal amount is burned, nothing significant, put it this way name me one bank that is purchasing big amounts of XRP because all the news I've seen have only mentioned them using ripple and not XRP directly, in fact I don't even know of any bank directly using any crypto yet for that matter.

Also only 40% or so of the total supply has been released while the rest of the premine is still going to be released over time. XRP may have gained value but it is a speculative value which explains the mass volatility. There is little value in a non crypto blockchain that burns a minimal amount of the currency over time.

People are buying into the XRP hype thinking all the major banks are mass purchasing XRP when they are not, they would never buy or use such a volatile asset in mass.

Did I miss something? The last 2 posts said congrats when actually he lost money?

Signature campaign spammers eager to write a lot of posts without reading the threads they post in.

As for OP's original problem its always unfortunate when you are forced to sell for RL reasons, it can happen to anyone but its not a reason that should dissuade us from investing whether that be bitcoin or other investments.

I hope you get back on your feet and I hope you didn't sell ALL your bitcoins as your original post says. Even just a fraction could someday earn it back.
246  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Australia moving forward on: May 11, 2017, 10:39:39 AM
Following on from japans good news story are we seeing a snowball effect?

I believe so, some conspiracy theory believers think the government is trying to hold bitcoin down for some unknown reason but in reality governments are going to accept it more and more, even in France the newly elected president is a bitcoiner.

The reality is that its getting adopted by every walk of life and it will continue to ride the wave of adoption, the bigger question is will people still use bitcoin as soon as the price stops rising?

249  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do you keep your bitcoins? on: May 11, 2017, 04:36:52 AM
This is frowned upon by a lot of people but I keep my bitcoins on exchanges with 2FA. Put it simply I trust more in the security of the exchange than I do my own ability to secure my computer and with the 2FA its unlikely I can get my own personal account hacked on an exchange.

Can the exchange get hacked? Yes, however there are usually red flags to see before the chaos, and that gives time to move to another exchange.

For low value transactions it is very rare someone will attempt a double spend to earn a very small amount. Also if you are buying drinks in a bar with bitcoin you will be around long enough for them to confirm the transaction, if you are buying an online subscription service they can cancel the subscription if you double spend.

There are several services that are well suited for instant confirmation, and there are others where the value is low enough they take the risk since few people will want to cheat for little money.
252  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC dominance decreasing. on: May 11, 2017, 04:13:39 AM
I wouldn't worry about bitcoins dominance fading, the market can accommodate several coins but bitcoin is likely to remain on top for the simple reason that it came first. And as others have pointed out all the exchanges do btc/alt, meaning btc is the benchmark price for those alts.

Well, it has been pointed out that this is not the case any more for the bigger alts, which are directly fiat/alt.  There are several alts now that are *independent* of bitcoin ; and bitcoin not being a stable unit of value, it is a bad idea to measure the value of something (like alts, or coffee) in bitcoin.  Most fiat is much more stable as a unit of account.

The bitcoin and alt coin markets are getting decoupled.

But it is true that bitcoin having first mover advantage, and having 3-6 years of advance on most alt coins of any significance, its market leadership is still good for quite a while before this erodes away.

You are right the markets are starting to get decoupled, however they are currently still not really decoupled even for the big ones, the biggest markets are still btc/alt. The price of bitcoin also strongly affects the price of alts. For example when btc goes up a lot the alt markets tend to crash as people convert alt to btc.

I think however you are right 3-6 years advance on alts is about right, eventually some of the markets will become more or less completely independent and bitcoin will have to adapt to survive.
253  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Why we still gambling while we always lose? on: May 11, 2017, 04:08:32 AM
I think I can sum it up more concisely. There are two main types of gamblers:

1. Addicts: they just cannot stop gambling there is always the thought they can win it big. When they win they gamble more to win more. When they lose they need to earn it back. They can be classified as risk lovers.

2. People looking for fun: gamble on a sports game makes the game more exciting when you win, putting some money down in a casino when you are on holiday with the full expectations of a loss is fun too.

Number 1 can not walk away when they win (unless they have won so much) whereas number 2 can. The problem is a lot of people are number 1 when they in fact think they are number 2. However both 1 and 2 will keep coming back even though they lose money more or less every time.
254  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Invest in LTC or BTS on: May 11, 2017, 03:50:04 AM
Is there a reason why you are deciding between these two? They are both imo a bad investment at this point in time, as others have said LTC was once a decent buy but its gone up too much in value now. There are plenty of good alts still decently priced though.
255  Economy / Speculation / Re: Buying More Bitcoins on: May 11, 2017, 03:44:53 AM
well i would say that you have made a good choice by buying that amount of bitcoins, well even if you have bought 1 bitcoins, you might have earned a lot of money through that bitcoin.

There are thousands of threads like this you could bump to show they did well to buy... The same as there will be thousands you can bump after the next major crash to say they did badly. Obviously this one guy made the right choice given the information we now have.
256  Economy / Economics / Re: How to double your money using BTC? on: May 11, 2017, 03:41:30 AM
Bitcoin has done well in the past but as every investment manager tells you past performance is no guarantee for the future. Of course I believe bitcoin will go up but telling someone they will double their money just by holding and forgetting is silly because you can't know that for sure.

Your sentiment however is correct that you shouldn't worry about short term changes if you have decided to go long because it will kill you inside.
257  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Sent bitcoin from Blockchain wallet to exchange. 18 hours still unconfirmed? on: May 11, 2017, 03:38:51 AM
f0d123c031370339f2df4f34dedef2b94d80b93617589db2f801f7f97e7e8903

That has 120sat/byte fee when you should send with something like 180sat/byte to get it confirmed quicker.
I suggest you download electrum because the keys are stored locally and you can customize fees and such.
As far as i know, blockchain sends with really low fees compared to what they should be sent with.

Yea, thats what I figured that the fee was too low and they generated it for me. I didn't choose it. As far as this transaction should I just wait or should i keep trying every hour to get it in the next pool? Should this clear by today?

For future reference you should start using a wallet where you can choose the fee (doesn't have to be electrum) and then look at bitcoinfees.21.co for the right fee depending on how fast you want it confirmed. Your best chance this time is just to is to wait, normally at your fee you won't wait more than a day.

259  Economy / Speculation / Re: is this bitcoin bubble ever going to burst on: May 10, 2017, 02:37:48 PM
Guys I sold out and sold my soul, not sure if I should buy back in now or wait for some consolidation ? Any advice would be appreciated. Is there even going to be correction ?

Don't take advice from anyone on a forum, people here are mostly bull on bitcoin all the time regardless of whether its warranted or not. There are sound reasons both to expect the price to go up as well as for it to go down.

What it comes down to is do you think its heading up? Or more importantly do you think its going up in the long term?

If the answer to either is yes then you should buy now, trying to trade to buy back is just going to end in tears most people end up buying at the top and selling at the bottom.
260  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Invest in ETH or ETC? on: May 10, 2017, 02:32:09 PM
Eventually there will be a big altcoin crash and only the top coins or those offering unique features not done by others will survive, for this reason I would choose ETH over ETC. ETC is a smaller weaker version of ETH. If you want a high risk high reward coin there are plenty better than ETC too.
