If the Bitcoin community wants to be taken seriously, Bitcoin businesses better not make that a policy.  ...and if the community has nothing better to do than publicly circulate lists of supposed scammers then you're just reinforcing the negative image others try to pin on Bitcoin as only being about scams and we deserve every bit of mockery we get from those outside who see Bitcoin as nothing but.

tThe negative image others try to pin on Bitcoin is not that it's only being about scams. The negative image is that Bitcoin is full of scams, and that we either don't ever do anything about it, or run to the police contrary to our free-market beliefs. Regardless of whether asking police for help is hypocritical or not, it is simply not effective on a global scale Bitcoin operates on. So the only solutions we have are 1) whine about it and keep getting scammed, 2) go to the police who ignore us, and keep getting scammed, or 3) live up to the "horrible free-market" ideals we get ridiculed for, and actually take care of the scamming ourselves.

We tried 1 and 2
I agree.  I think companies taking a strong stand against scamming would INCREASE outsider confidence, not decrease it.  We need to do everything we can to get scammers out of Bitcoin business, and if that means making the mess more public than it is, so be it.

Good - more Bitcoins for me and my GPU's!  Cheesy

Interesting that not selling gpus for asic seed money to be first in line might end up being the best play. It is almost 6 months of mining now since bfl started taking orders while the price has been great. Asics might come out in a rush and we can still get them right after everyone else does who ordered months ago give or take a month or so. Only a lucky few can make upto 6 months of mining in days/weeks.
More interesting, that's exactly what I did.  I sold all my GPU's, with exception of the two that are in computers that I use for other purposes besides mining.  I have a first-day preorder with BFL.  Smiley

Likewise, when I see "chemtrails exist", I stop reading.

Chemtrails and contrails are not the same thing. Waht makes you doubt the claims of C.T.s?
Because they're C.T.s, not C.T.s.
2424  Economy / Speculation / Re: What happened in early December? (blockchain.info) on: December 19, 2012, 08:36:46 PM
Blockchain.info was referred by a site that was switching to payments in bitcoins. I don't remember the site, but it was posted in this forum some days ago.

Buy, buy, buy  Wink
Was that Wordpress?  4chan?  Something else?
2425  Other / Off-topic / Re: Strange noise coming from the sky on: December 19, 2012, 08:29:23 PM

The length of time a jet trail takes to evaporate varies because of a difference in altitude, humidity, and temperature, ......

True, but that is no the only observation being made. Chemtrails have been well documented. There is a video on youtube about a Vietnam war US airforce pilot who describes how he flew aircraft that sprayed chemicals to change the weather in order to wash out a bridge over several days time. The weather went from clear skies to torrential downpour (during the dry season). That was over 40 years ago.

So when I see "chemtrails are a conspiracy theory" i stop reading.
Likewise, when I see "chemtrails exist", I stop reading.

So if the car doesn't start when you put the key in and turn it, do you no longer call it a car?  If someone has removed the battery, it's no longer a car?

Nope, I'd still call it a car. Though I may amend that and call it a...crappy car. Smiley

Is a BFL Single SC a Single SC without ASIC chips? Is a car a car if it has no motor?
I'd say a car can still be a car without a motor, though a more accurate description might be "self propelled vehicle".

I'm not trying to claim that BFL ASICS do, in fact, exist.  I am simply trying to dispell the belief that an ASIC must have hashed on the main network before it exists.  That's just bad logic.  It obviously exists moments before it hashes on the main network.
2427  Other / Off-topic / Re: Strange noise coming from the sky on: December 19, 2012, 08:08:16 PM
AT LEAST IT WASNT DANKS MUSIC!  YOU WOULD HAVE SHIT YOURSELF INSTEAD!

Chemtrails are easy to spot because they dont dissapate. A normal trail from a jet will be gone within hours.  Chemtrails will last much longer  and often times form an X   at least in my region.

lots of scary things out there....I'm a big fan of the unexplained, religion, sociology, philosophy, conspiracy theories, outer space, what is really "reality". we can only see what what our eyes will allow us to see.  who knows what kind of stuff is flying around that is out of our visible spectrum.  I love the show nova...shows about string theory and physics.

This is a little off topic but we used to watch a guy named julius sumner miller on pbs in high school. He is the only reason I paid attention enough to pass....what a great professor and interesting person.

  R.I.P. julius
The length of time a jet trail takes to evaporate varies because of a difference in altitude, humidity, and temperature, not because they're spraying chemicals on us or making clouds.   Roll Eyes

The title should be changed but instead of just saying so, also propose an alternative. Mine:

"Blockchain.info reputation dinged by MemoryDealers.com founder Roger"

Works for me.

Or

"MemoryDealers.com abuses blockchain.info admin access"

You'd also have to be delusional to think they are alive.

Clearly.

Still, I don't understand why people conflate "incomplete" with "nonexistent". What strange dichotomous worlds some people must live in.

Perhaps a more accurate phrasing would be "does not yet exist with respect to the bitcoin network". If no hashing for the network has been done by a BFL ASIC, then from the networks point of view they do not exist even if complete.
Uh, no...

Existence of an item or product does not depend on the use of that item or product.  If a car is sitting on a dealer's lot, do you say it does not exist yet because it has not been driven?

I would not, but the car on the lot in your example has been completely assembled and has all working parts (theorectically) in place and in proper working order.
So if the car doesn't start when you put the key in and turn it, do you no longer call it a car?  If someone has removed the battery, it's no longer a car?

@Phinnaeus - I think we can all agree that the Yugo was something other than a car.  Tongue
2430  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: WARNING - Blockchain.info is NOT SAFE on: December 19, 2012, 07:50:52 PM
@Charlie, I agree with keeping the thread, but the title SHOULD be changed.  I think everyone here agrees that blockchain.info is, once again, safe for usage.  The title would likely scare newbies away from using the service (which is the best Bitcoin wallet a person can point a new user to).  Without a good alternative, they may download QT (NOOOOO!) or try one of the other less user-friendly options, and be turned away from using Bitcoin entirely.  Many of the things discussed in this thread may not be understood by newbies, and certainly, they are not likely to read through 5 pages of discussions to find out that the issue has been resolved.

I sincerely hope that one of the lessons learned from this whole experience is that all Bitcoin-based businesses will add the following to their TOS in big bold letters:

"NOTE: if you try to scam us, and we find out, your account will be canceled, all your information, public and private, will be shared with all third parties we do business with, who may stop doing business with you as well, and this information may be shared publicly at our discretion."

Since Bitcoin business is done globally, some guy from China calling the police on someone in Greece is really not practical, and the threat of being even mistakenly labeled a scammer would hopefully knock these "Prove that I scammed you, asshole!" guys down a peg.
Sweet, I like it!!!
2431  Economy / Speculation / What happened in early December? (blockchain.info) on: December 19, 2012, 07:38:04 PM
I noticed on one of blockchain.info's graphs, instead of the usual few hundred new accounts per day, they suddenly saw a few THOUSAND per day, starting around December 9th or so, and maintaining more than a thousand a day ever since.

Any idea what happened to cause a ten-fold increase in new users?  I'm feeling rather bullish after seeing those numbers...

2434  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: WARNING - Blockchain.info is NOT SAFE on: December 19, 2012, 05:54:41 PM
While everyone's mind is focused on Blockchain, there is one thing that I think would be a +1000: an open-source (or at least source visible) downloadable executable client for all its services.  So, someone who has assured themselves they have downloaded good client code doesn't have to worry that they'll be served some malicious script on a future visit, and it can be put in an independent repository where third parties have signed off on it.

While an executable client would be great, even just a folder full of .html and .js files would be more than satisfactory, and would have the benefit of being cross-platform.  You could also see others willing to fork it and share improvements to it.

In my mind, if blockchain being a "web wallet" is the only hesitation to recommending it, doing this would definitely push it over the threshold.
With such a client, blockchain's purpose would be relegated to calculating account/address balances, broadcasting transactions, and storing encrypted backups?

Makes sense to me.  Only issue might be the lack of revenue that blockchain brings in from a downloadable client, vs they at least bring in some revenue via an ad on most pages right now.

So, if I understand this correctly, because of the multi-key split, a vanity pool miner could not work on more than one name at a time, unless the multiple names were all submitted with the same public key?  I misunderstood how this worked if that is the case...
2437  Economy / Digital goods / Re: ∆★∆ -[WTS] EVE Online PLEX- ∆★∆ on: December 18, 2012, 08:59:04 PM
Yes that would work.

Quote from the Eve-wiki here:

Quote
PLEX can be used by players regardless of the type of account they have. When you activate a PLEX, the extra time is added to your account immediately. In this respect, PLEX works exactly like a prepaid game time code.

If you are currently using a Trial account, your account is converted to a paying account and the 30 days are added onto the remaining days left in your trial period.

They're very simple you use, once you have the plex, you can right-click it, then select 'add game time to account' which will add the 30days gametime. This can also be done from anywhere within the universe, you do not have to be in the station where the PLEX is located. Use the assets window to do this.
Perfect.  Smiley  I'll buy a plex from you then.

Title: A Eulogy for #Occupy
URL: http://www.wired.com/opinion/2012/12/a-eulogy-for-occupy/all/

This says a lot about bitcointalk.org:
Quote
Because the GA had no way to reject force, over time it fell to force. Proposals won by intimidation; bullies carried the day. What began as a way to let people reform and remake themselves had no mechanism for dealing with them when they didn’t. It had no way to deal with parasites and predators. It became a diseased process, pushing out the weak and quiet it had meant to enfranchise until it finally collapsed when nothing was left but predators trying to rip out each other’s throats.

Let us just hope that BitcoinTalk.org figures out that freedom of association is also a right, and as a private website BitcoinTalk.org has the freedom to not associate with users that an overwhelming majority of site users downvote or ignore.

Did anyone NOT see this coming?

In my mind (and I know many of you will disagree), it kind of proves the point that an elected government that tries to do things for the good of the people is better than no government at all, and letting the bullies rule because no one else is.

Seems the important point is the Put Blah Blah Blah in your signature space. This isn't a purchase so Yeah if you want a shot put it in your signature it costs nothing. Maybe pride or ego but nothing monitarily. I am pretty sure there is no accepted exchange rate for pride or ego to $.

Providing advertising for a company is a form of consideration. Requiring some form of consideration for a sweepstakes turns it into an illegal lottery.
It's only advertising as much as requiring people to like & share a page on Facebook is (thereby advertising it on their newsfeed).  If this is illegal, then I know of a whole host of companies on Facebook who should face similar indictments.

There was a CEO that got slammed by the SEC for a Facebook message, I forget which company though.
...which is completely irrelevant to this.  He was slammed for announcing information over Facebook that should have been "more formally shared with investors" first.

Just saying, if the government wants to bone you over trivial shit, they will.
Valid point.  Wink
2440  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2nd batch of butterfly, btcfgpa, avalon &co will make NO PROFIT and loss their $ on: December 18, 2012, 07:56:47 PM
10$ is optimistic cause it's a high price for an uncertain period I think. Stating 10$ cause I don't wanna put variable price in my equation =)

I repeat i'm talking here about the 2nd batch profitability (just to be sure , don't wanna talk about the 3 first guy receiving their devices).

Let's say the 20 000 preorder number is ok (but probably more now).

20 000 chip for the preorder.

and let's say 5 000 for each of the other main competitor.

total = 35 000

Let's say that the global average is 10gh/device

We have 350Th for the preorder. Concretly it means +/-200$/month for 60gh
So it means you'll hardly get your bet back in a year. And you'll probably make not profit (as you said we'll reach 1000 in a year ...etc 100 000chips for the year...)

What do you think?

I think you should do more research. Tongue
Each BFL chip does 7.5GH/s. The 60GH/s SC Single has 8 chips. 20K chips is thus about 150TH/s. BFL's also said that a preorder placed today will probably ship Feb or March. Avalon's first batch is 300 units at 66GH/s (20TH/s), and the second batch isn't expected until mid-late February. bASIC's first batch is about 900 units (up to a max of maybe 1000) at 72GH/s each. Say 72TH/s. Their second batch is supposed to be end of February. ASICminer should add 12TH/s or so in their first batch. Reclaimer has been very quiet lately. I don't expect them to add anything to the network any time soon, same goes for Goliath.
Add that all up, and you're looking at maybe 250TH/s by the end of February.

Ok, first thing, it seems that I don't know what is a chip , any link documentation ? =) (if a chip is 7,5gh what's inside a jalapeno , 1/2 chip ? ;.. wtv) thanks in advance.

So let's bet that I'll have my single SC 60Gh when the network is at 250Gh/s, at this point I'll need at least 6month to get my money back right ? (actually onyl 4month at 250gh but I bet that the hrate will grow of course)

What do you think ?
Taking into account ALL of the current preorders, we are looking at 200-250 TH/s.  Sure, the hashrate will grow down the line, but if you're talking about a device ordered today (to be delivered after all current preorders are filled), it's not going to grow that much in 4 months.  Your payback might be extended 1-2 months is all.  It's not like there's going to be a huge rush of orders that magically appear once the preorders are delivered.  SOME more orders, sure, but once people take into account the current hashrate, the current payback period, the risk of other people ordering ASICs and increasing the hashrate, and the risk of an ASIC price decrease, I can't see break-even raising beyond 7-8 months for quite some time.
