2481  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Newb wanting to Start Mining Small on: February 01, 2016, 12:17:04 AM
yeah, that one is good.
you can only run 3, possibly four, at higher speeds (like 18Gh), so four would go to positions: 1, 3, 5, 7 without interference.
i also put in nearby positions, they fit, but need to be separated by a piece of plastic, like old library card or a store card.
I suggest for you to read up on support thread as there are a lot of important suggestions, especially re software (most succinct software setup writeup was from Jake36).
This is not a money maker, just fun and learning project.

yeah i decently not intresed in making a lot with this build.  i just wanting to learn and many make enough to buy a few .cbr comics.  the comics are only like 0.0144 Bitcoin for the most expensive ones.  so not expecting much from this build except the knowledge. knowledge is power.

Edit: if i only use 4 chips is the fan even required?

yes, fan is needed for higher speeds=more bitcoin
however, if you already have some household fan, it might be sufficient. I had multiple vornado fans, so i pointed one at the lowest speed toward one of my hubs.
Arctic is a bit tricky as it does not have a power button, so as soon as you plug it in, blades start rotating-this startled me the first time, but even if it hits your hand, it would not hurt, just surprise.

Mine is a little bit overkill but I had lots of computer fan's.   So I got a fan controller to control them.  It's far overkill but I believe I have 5 fan's I can turn up and down.

I have turned it down now.  I was running around 9 compacs, and 3 U3's in my lotto mining and it kept it all cool easily.   I recently got rid of a little of some of my lotto gear.  I did keep some compacs and use them with RPI.  I kept a set as I like collecting some.
2482  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 21 cents per kw, Any way to mine? on: February 01, 2016, 12:03:41 AM
I pay 18 cents. It's less then you OP but it is not giving me any profit.
I feel bad i started mining al together. It cost a lot of time and no you won't get you money back.

I suggest selling gear or finding a hosting center.  18 cent's is to much to pay on electricity for mining.  And add cooling on top of that, you are going to lose quite a bit over time mining.

But with high difficulty changes I think sooner you get out of 18 cent electricity the better.  Hosting you can easily get 10 cent's or less, so even if you send it somewhere for hosting you are far better of.
2483  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitfury Containerized Plug and Play Datacenter on: February 01, 2016, 12:00:17 AM
I would love to find a client to host one of these units.  This has been in the works for years, good to see it as a reality.  Immersion cooling is a growing technology, and Bitcoin Mining is a near perfect test-case for the viability of the underlying technology.  It is a very efficient package overall and in the times of rising difficulty, efficiency is key

-Dalkore

And if it does .11 watts per gh  before cooling it is poorly designed.

the chip has demoed at 0.06 watts a gh

So  this does close to 2x what the chip can do on the low end.

I don't see it as a good design unless they don't sell any chips to any one else.

If they sell chips and some one builds a .08  watt   s-9  it will hurt this machine.

Now if they back off on the power or allow this to run at a solid down clock down volt.

Ie if you can run it at .07 or .08 watts a gh as an option  it is  a fine  piece of gear.

I think a lot of the potential clients will be less then the .07 even.  I see this most likely going to some of the biggest operations and I would guess around half of that price they pay.

The only thing I wonder is if some of these mega clients really will want the already setup box.  I see a lot of the big players already with investment's in data centers, so likely they will want to put in a spot they already have.   I predict most of clients will just want miners.   But I could be wrong if someone is a new player in the game then they might like this.

+16.4 = Notlist3d

I hope I'm far off but this one has me a little afraid.  I think it's going to hurt.  Price has been pretty steady around 380.    Hopefully we still will see a jump on value side also.

I can SSH to 192.168.1.99 but cannot get anything to work using a browser.

The browser comes up with:Bad Gateway
The process did not produce any response

Any suggestions?

No need to two threads.  I gave some advice in other - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=702653.msg13725961#msg13725961

You might lock this thread and use other.  It is in a board with a lot more traffic over there.
2486  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: I need help with amps and S7... on: January 30, 2016, 06:33:23 PM
You only need the 240v setup if you plan on using their PSU. As others stated, can use EVEGA or another server PSU, you just need to be able to handle ~1300 watt continuous. That being said:

You should have a 20% buffer for continuous use.

Watt = Volts x Amps
so 240 Volt @ 10 Amps = 2400 Watts - 20% (480) = 1920 Watts which is plenty for a single S7.

So a 10 amp breaker would be fine for a 240V setup.

If sticking with 120V standard US then
120 Volt @ 15 Amps = 1800 Watts - 20% (360) = 1440 Watts continuous, which would also be plenty for a single S7.

So a 15 amp breaker would be fine for a 120V setup. That being said, you really shouldn't plug anything else into that circuit.

Hope this helps, any other questions feel free to ask.

Edit: Keep in mind this is for a single S7, I do not know how many you intend to setup. So adjust the math as required.

If he's paying a electrician it would be a shame to pay for a 240 10 amp to be put in.  It will be a little cheaper due to equipment.  But hes already going to pay for his time I would guess on electrician.

With paying for his time he might as well get 30 amp whall hes doing it.   There is not a drawback to getting it assuming the cost is not rediclous on price, some electricians do very high cost compared to part's/time.
2487  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S3 Setup [HD] on: January 30, 2016, 06:29:43 PM
My S3 is set to factory default of 192.168.1.99 but I cannot connect to it via the browser using a direct connection to my pc.

What should my PC settings be?

By direct you mean straight from S3 to PC?   If so likely you need to set your PC on a static IP address aswell as there is not a DHCP server giving out address's.

So I have a feeling that is problem.  Look at how to set a static lots of good articles (guessing your windows).    And if your not comterable with that you can always use a router between them.
2488  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: where can i get bitcrane asic mining chip on: January 30, 2016, 06:26:58 PM
Why do you need a chip in the first place and why do you want a bitcrane chip? Sidehack's chips are much easier to remove and acquire..? I'm sure someone is selling a board or a broken miner with at least one working chip on ebay if you absolutely need a bitcrane chip.

Sidehack is become kinda the golden example of making gear without a million in backing.   You really do have to get resourceful like he did on getting chips from boards, as you need a lot of capital to purchase chips in most cases.

I'm ot sure why OP would want bitcrane.  I still have not figured that one out, seems like better and or more popular options are out there.
2489  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What I need to buy from bitmain to get everything working? on: January 30, 2016, 06:24:32 PM
You only need S7 from the Bitcmain. You can use your PC power supply if it is of good quality.

today psu hardly need 1200watt, they are most of the time sitting on 750-800w, so no i don't think he can run the s7 with that psu

It would be closer to 1300+ (depends on batch).  But if your batch 8/9 runs at 1300 that is considered good, some reported closer to 1400.

It's gotten to the point were server PSU's have kinda taken over.  They are cheaper then ATX and some easier to get the 10 PCIe cables for example on S7.  But 220+ is normally needed on a lot of server PSU's to get the most out of it.
2490  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: where can i get bitcrane asic mining chip on: January 30, 2016, 12:51:53 AM
hi does anyone know where i can get a bitcrane asic minining chip or any other 28nm to buy in bulk

Bitcrane dont seem to reply,  Huh

Thank you any help is greatly appreciated

james Hall

It is going to be hard to get asic chips unless your talking very very large amount in bulk.  You might find some like poster above with a little.  But as far as companies the ones currently producing chips normally sell full miners.   To get a order of chips it normally takes a large amount of money.

I'm not sure you will find bitcrane in real bulk either, I doubt they are still producing and chances are stopped long ago.

If they're not producing it anymore chances are it's not a good chip to buy! try something newer, it will be probably much more energy efficient Wink

The problem though is getting the chips.  Unless you have a very big budget you chances are cannot get new chips, unless you are extremly lucky.  Look at a project like sidehacks compacs.  He is pulling chips off boards for his batch 2 compacs.

I'm sure he would have rather been able to buy new chips, but it just takes a huge amount at this point to get chips in most cases.
2491  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What I need to buy from bitmain to get everything working? on: January 30, 2016, 12:49:22 AM
You only need S7 from the Bitcmain. You can use your PC power supply if it is of good quality.

Quality is one thing - can it supply enough power.

Very few folks have PC power supplies that can run a S7 just laying around.

Picking up the bitmain one is an option for sure.

You can get cheaper used PSUs/breakout boards that'll power your S7 also.

But if you want all in one - yes S7 and the PSU they offer.

Assuming you have 220V (or at least 208V) available where you want to place the miner. I also hear that the Bitmain PSU is fairly loud, but have no actual experience. Of course the S7 may well drown out the noise of the Bitmain PSU.

I have a few of the Bitmain PSU's they seem to work well, I have had multiple with no issues.  They are loud with small high rpm fan.  But S7 miner is also loud.  So I don't have issue.  Also I put them in my mining area so noise is not a issue for me.

Biggest thing is that he has that 208v as mentioned.   Some sadly buy the PSU without reading that and it is a instant issue once they get it if 110/120 user.
2492  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Avalon 6 Miner - Winter Mining - Notlist3d - Also FAQ and Help on: January 30, 2016, 12:44:55 AM
I'll keep the reverse fan for a month and will keep you guys posted if anything happens.

@philipma1957 Regarding the burnt cap, that might be a gray area, because we can't really tell if it was due to heat or over-volting or maybe both, just too much variables. Maybe blockc can do a testing just for good faith, have 1 miner over volted to 12.8 and have another miner run at constant 75-80 degrees at 12.2 volts and see which one dies first.

I would test this myself, but I don't have the funds to spare for the Avalon 6's to test =P

There is really not much reason to ask them to run it.  On over volt you should be within :12V DC ±0.2V .  If you are not warranty is void, so I don't see them supporting over volt to that point.   75-80 should not be a issue it is within Working Environment: 0C to 35C.

How you mention you don't have funds to spare for Avalon 6 test, I would strongly suggest you don't try things like switching fan orientation.  It chances are voids warranty under: Equipment Tampering And Disassembly.

Thanks for the inputs, but then there won't be any fun of owning one. Or I would of just rent hashes instead. I'm the kind of person that likes to play around with stuff =) even if it voids warranty, makes it more exciting =).

No I can understand I like getting miners and hosting them myself as I can play with them.  I enjoy the tinkering with them.

I was just mentioning it as you said you could not spare funds to test Avalon 6... when in reality switching fan's you are testing Smiley.

ok so i chose a bad hub.  this is why i wanted advice.  thanks so much for the advice too.  but maybe this hub is better.  it even has a power brick it uses for power. i went with a 2.0 because i didn't know if raspberry pi 2 had usb 3.0 support.

Anker AH241 USB 3.0 Aluminum 13-Port Hub + 5V 2.1A Smart Charging Port with 12V 5A Power Adapter [VIA VL812-B2 Chipset]

thanks in advance, alice

RPI does not always like 3.0.   You also picked a nice 2.0 hub the Anker is very nice.  I did like the old version that was like a metal brick better, but the new version is still a very nice hub.

Should work good with RPI.
2494  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Should I Buy used or new miners? on: January 30, 2016, 12:40:50 AM
Get brand new, most efficient miners available. If someone is selling his used device, it most likely means that it's becoming unprofitable.

not really, maybe he has bad electricity to sustain the mining in his house, but if you have a cheaper electricity than him it can still be profitable for you

so it depend, certainly i would pay far less if it is used, not like the beginning where many were buying at even higher price than the new

Used mining gear is usually totally overpriced. You can even find 0,3GH USB block Erupters for about 25$. Offers with fair price are the minority of the second-hand market.
Of course, you can consider doing the same thing - selling your gear with the price 2-3x of it's real value, and consider this income as a part of ROI Wink

In general, recently released devices are more energy efficient and then profitable, than their predecessors. It will be ideal situation, if you could buy used miner right after introducing, for the price lower than you would pay for a new one. The longer you wait to get even recent model, the less time you have to make an ROI.

Some keep those up as collectors though.   There are some who have collected every color on block erupters for fun.   I did not do it on them but I did on compacs try to get every main version.  So I can understand the collecting for fun.

If you look at bigger miners they don't have the collectors.   Some of the bigger miners have decent price.  But price on ebay is always higher then here on forums.  So it also depends on where you are looking at.

Yes we were running around +6.5% Yesterday but a one very long Block, 1 1/2 Hours, dropped the rate to negative for the Day. Has rapidly corrected Today and we are back to +6.75% run rate for the period so far. Just shows you don't want to look too close at the Data, particularily early in a new period.

Rich

Price is a little bit up today were around 380 right now.  So could have been worse on it falling down.    We still have a lot of time left in this period to see what happens.

Bitwisdom still has a high number:

Hello.

I have two U3 with raspberry powered via PSU standard.

I had got a lot of problem (zombie, low hash,... ) until I compiled de bitmain cgminer version: https://github.com/bitmaintech/cgminer

After compiling and executing that version the U3 works flawlessly, no zombies and stable hashing...

When you say no zombies how long has it been up?  Long term was hat I always had issues with when I had 3, although I don't think I tried that version.

Thanks for sharing though.

But some with higher to normal buy machines and when it's unprofitable for them they sell it.  But they sell it and free to cheap can buy and still have a chance at some more time running.

Most miners I think will end up with multiple owners I think during the miner's life.
