Interesting article about the decline of Facebook
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/dec/27/facebook-dead-and-buried-to-teens-research-finds
When the arbitrary message functionality works, I think we have a decent chance to find a niche here with right promotional efforts.
So pay attention development team Smiley

We have to make a determined push for mobile...the android app is already full steam ahead and the iPhone app is starting off.

Messaging/DNS....Alias system can be big.

CfB, are the aliases case sensitive? The wiki doesn't mention...

If u get alias info u can see case that was used during 1st assignment. But if u resolve aliases then they r case-insensitive.

so if by chance you got norWay....it's the same as norway right?

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Jean-Luc has joined Nxt core dev team. His role will be focused on leading the core development only, nothing more.

Congrats to both the dev team and Jean-Luc! His posts in this thread have always been technically very well funded and insightful.

Jean Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise....  Cheesy  I had to do it...it was just too tempting

Edit: USS Nxterprise boldly go where no Crypto has gone before.

Since we are deciding about features... what about reversible transactions? Mastercoin is planning to have this..

Reversible? Sounds weird.

In case of mistake mastercoin uses a timer...like u have 5 minutes to recall the transaction

You have all been extremely patient and generous with those of us (newbies) trying to learn about Nxt and cryptos in general, so please be patient with another newbie question below.
And I will add that the quality and volume of communication on this site is extraordinarily good. Doing development in the open like this is like inviting people into the kitchen of your restaurant. Average customers may not want to see that kitchen, but legitimate investors absolutely must see the good, the bad, and the ugly of the whole operation. This forum captures the historical development of problems encountered and solved, and will be strong testament to the resilience of this project and the people involved.

Here's the question:
What is your best guess about the specific sources of the DDOS attacks? Organizing them takes time, resources, and cooperation, so how is such an attack justified by those making the effort? What is the ultimate gain for them? (Sorry if this question has already been answered. I read the posts here as much as I can, but haven't hit all 480+ pages.)

The DEATH of NXT
2510  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 27, 2013, 01:34:52 PM
Nxt might have competition for features soon: Open Transactions desktop software platform for bitcoin and other currencies..they have been hard at work for months / years but I believe the new videos is a re-assertion of their place in the marketplace in light of the recent popularity of nxt…If they launch before our other advanced features, we will still have the speed and green forging advantage..not to mention it will actually take time for other crypto's devs to coordinate and start integrating.. thought this was worth sharing.

@CFB ....is the above Nxt node set-up helping the network in anyway?

Only if it forges or push transactions/blocks.

If raspberry pi's can forge & push transaction/blocks....then I see no reason a tablet/smartphone couldn't do it as well.
2512  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 27, 2013, 07:05:25 AM
why is it that everyone keeps going on about thwarting the ddosers with an army of rasberry pi's? if you had 10 of them wouldnt you still have to run all 10 through the same IP address? isnt what we need more distinct ip addresses contributing not more distinct pieces of hardware? or are we not talking about each person getting a stack of pi's but rather a pi in the hands of every individual who is involved in this project?

I think that's why someone earlier suggested smartphones which number in the millions...don't know if that would solve the problem though
2513  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 27, 2013, 07:04:04 AM
@ Nexern/CfB....couldn't "the Hive" feature work on android enabled devices if Raspberry Pi could manage it?

2514  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 27, 2013, 06:30:38 AM
Yes, there can be battery drain because of constant network activity. Probably, android client should strictly limit number of outbound connections, but I think it's acceptable to network because of potentially gigantic number of devices.

this could make Nxt a truly mobile payment/messaging/e-commerce platform in the palm of your hand...extremely user friendly...if we can pull this off it would drive adoption thru the roof.

Updates could be pushed out automatically or thru the Apps store to each device which could potentially number in the millions.

EDIT: Anonymous mobile payment/messaging/global e-commerce platform in the palm of your hand.

2515  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 27, 2013, 06:15:23 AM
so talk time would be a good indicator of how long the battery would last running the full client.

EDIT: I don;t think this battery thing would be a problem on the new 64 bit -- iPad air or recently released tablets.
That could be feasible. Tablets have enormous batteries these days and low power cores on the side of main CPU for simple tasks.

Compared to tablet's screen nxt is probably not very power-hungry  Cheesy

ANONYMOUS MESSAGING   Wink

Edit: Could Nxt run in the background even if the screen was sleeping?.....what about data would Nxt eat into Data plans?
2516  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 27, 2013, 06:10:18 AM
CfB, a new topic for your consideration.  Is there a way to mod the next version of the NXT client/server software (0.4.8?) to identify whether on not it is running on a Raspberry Pi and perhaps even put out some sort of visual designator in the peer field of the client so you can tell how many Raspberry Pis are running in the wild?  Such info could be of great and growing interest in the future, perhaps even convincing the bad guys to give up DDoS when they see for themselves that NXT can deploy more nodes for $40 each than they can to attack.

Check this article and think about it.  If NXT is running on an ARMv6, it's running on a Pi.  Perhaps a nice raspberry colored dot could be used to show this?

http://htpcbuild.com/hardware/standalone-htpc-build/raspberry-pi-htpc/raspberry-pi-codec-license-install/

I'm adding a special parameter to identify Raspberry Pis.

what about android devices?

2517  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 27, 2013, 06:05:48 AM
EDIT: About the battery life:

A full client would need to be constantly uploading and downloading data whether it's forging or not. This will not only keep the CPU awake most of the time but also have the radio online 24/7.

It may not be as bad as making a phone call but not far from it either.

so talk time would be a good indicator of how long the battery would last running the full client.

EDIT: I don;t think this battery thing would be a problem on the new 64 bit -- iPad air or recently released tablets.

2518  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 27, 2013, 05:55:40 AM
Just got feedback on the current android app with Alias seach:

Nexus 7 tablet

Regarding battery drain....No, absolutely. The application will not forge or mine simply allows a quick view of the balance of the accounts. Out an agenda and other things. Is not persistent nor generates notifications. I like to see the balance of my accounts. Not need the master password, the account number only.

@CFB ....is the above Nxt node set-up helping the network in anyway?

2519  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 27, 2013, 05:48:51 AM
what about battery life that might pose a problem for device owners
It is PoS system, probably not very angry for battery power.

there's a lot of android devices in the world at presently and they keep getting more powerful day by day....Nxt nodes could easily cross a million.

If i'm correct Anonymous messaging is planned to be launched in a matter of weeks.

There's a guy running the current android app on his nexus 7 tablet...i already asked his feedback regarding battery drain...should have his reply soon.

2520  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 27, 2013, 05:35:09 AM
With the Raspberry Pi  experience I think it would be wise to be smartphone centric there is a lot of smartphones in the world with great distribution systems called App stores already in place.

If we can refine Nxt client to optimally run on smartphones then we can greatly scale the number of nodes in the network.

But for smartphones to run as nodes we need to have an amazing social feature for the general public to us on a daily basis....Anonymous Messaging with alias from your smartphone.

There is real demand for this....example bittorrent just launched an anonymous messaging service in alpha  a few days ago.

We should beat them to the punch....we already have a working android app with Alias search.

you forgot that a good android client renders all sticks running android a perfect candidate as well.
