If the moderation understands that they are useful the OPs could be restored
Some forums would indeed do that, but I don't think that's going to happen here:
Quote from: theymos
he can't delete the topics, so he's editing them to be "blank". This is common and allowed.

Someone could quote an old archived version, and post it into a new post Wink

FWIW, Android have built-in encryption
But it sucks Tongue
My phone for instance gives me the option to encrypt my MicroSD card. But if I do, I can no longer read the card in another phone, and if I reset my phone to factory settings, I also lose the data on my MicroSD card. On a (Linux) laptop, at least I'm allowed to keep my decryption key. I don't want to tie decryption to one specific device.

What's the best way to sell my small amount of BTX nowadays? CMC shows Pancake swap, but I don't really want to figure all that out for $8 worth of coins. I'd like to get rid of this wallet (and it's dedicated VM), so I should get rid of the coins first.

If anyone's interested to buy 200 BTX, feel free to PM me. Done.
2504  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Unstoppable wallet {User experiences} on: November 08, 2023, 09:00:34 AM
As far as I know, any passphrase on Ledger creates another wallet. On Unstoppable wallet, only valid PINs work.
Which one do you think has fewer weak spots?  Ledger with their Passphrase or Unstoppable with their Duress?
The passphrase gives unlimited possibilities, the PIN only 1 million. And if you have 10 wallets, 1 in 100,000 PINs will be valid. I don't think it matters much in practice, just have your 24" wrench ready.
2505  Other / Meta / Re: [SUGGESTION] Display Blocktime additionally with the created posts on: November 08, 2023, 08:44:26 AM
for example, when creating this post, the block time/number would be 815832
But why? Just a gimmick? It's probably possible to create a user script for this, but even then: block propagation isn't instantaneous, so in edge cases theymos' node might see it before your own node sees it.

There will probably a lot of posts near milestone blocks. I'm preparing for block 1000000 already Cheesy

I have seen an old thread where theymos were looking for devs to build a new forum software. The thread is from long ago, and the budget was over 5000 BTC. Does anybody know what happened then?
See New forum software.
2506  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: As a Bitcoin Core only user, how im supposed to pay someone in person? on: November 08, 2023, 08:39:21 AM
Laptop may attract attention, someone accidentally may hit you with shoulder and you may drop your laptop, everything can happen, I wouldn't use laptop either. I think that chances of damagin laptop or getting it stolen is way higher compared to smartphone because everyone has smartphone today in the street and outside, just my two cents.
A quick Google search shows that both laptops and cell phones have a 1-in-10 chance of being stolen. I trust laptops a lot more though, since I can install my own software and easily encrypt a user directory. Pick one up from Craigslist (for $50) and you don't have to worry about losing your expensive laptop.
2507  Other / Meta / Re: Save your nice merit records here - LAST UPDATE: 12/07/2023 on: November 08, 2023, 08:39:16 AM
I want to post this, but if I do, it's gone already..... I'll post it anyway:

The number is inaccurate anyway, if I check my post history, it shows 25017 posts.
2508  Other / Meta / Re: [SUGGESTION] Display Blocktime additionally with the created posts on: November 08, 2023, 08:23:53 AM
displaying the exact BTC block time
What do you mean with "Bitcoin block time"? The block time is approximately 10 minutes (usually a tad less, because of the ever increasing hash rate). It varies per block, but also per day as you can see in the linked graph.

Or do you mean the latest block number? That would make more sense, although I don't see how it's relevant to anything posted on the forum.
2509  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Unstoppable wallet {User experiences} on: November 07, 2023, 04:08:47 PM
Durress mode is similar to the Passphrase option Ledger has.  Right?
As far as I know, any passphrase on Ledger creates another wallet. On Unstoppable wallet, only valid PINs work.

Scary scenario.
It is. New plan:

I'm getting one of these! Cut a hole at the end, and use epoxy glue to embed my hardware wallet into the wrench. My $63 wrench beats any $5 wrench!

2511  Economy / Reputation / Re: Should Ratimov be in DT1? on: November 07, 2023, 12:32:16 PM
He said the reason, he did it was because Ratimov deleted all his previous feedback. Only the flags he created are left.
I only saw this now. Ratimov indeed wiped his sent feedback, and withdrew his Flags. I only checked a few of the Flags created by other users, but it looks like Ratimov deleted his vote on (all of?) those too.
Ratimov seems to have a flair for the dramatic.

Wild guess: did he wipe his Trust list too? That leaves no reason to include him.
2512  Economy / Reputation / Re: Should Ratimov be in DT1? on: November 07, 2023, 11:52:45 AM
Done.
Cool! So in one day, there are 2 less users (who-aren't-scammers) with negative feedback from DT.

C'mon, read my response above this quote. I just thought he was a good guy like DaveF and others that are in my list. No one has ever bought me and I have never asked for anything on this forum. I think I don't deserve this title.
I read it, and I quoted you selectively to make a point. Being a good guy doesn't necessarily mean their judgement on others is good too.

At the same time, he lost the ability to choose DT2, so users for whom he is a crucial vote also lose DT1 potential. For example, check wwzsocki. His only DT1 inclusion is from Ratimov, who is no longer that, which will almost certainly exclude him in the next reshuffle.
Correction: wwzsocki has enough inclusions to be eligible for theymos' DT1 random selection. That means he's likely to be on DT1 again, but if he's not, he's less likely to still be on DT2. That's not a big deal, he'll be back on later.

Reading the title again: Case closed. I'll click unwatch now.
2513  Economy / Reputation / Re: Should Ratimov be in DT1? on: November 07, 2023, 11:09:36 AM
@Ratimov: feel free to retaliate, that seems to be your thing. Just know that the users who excluded me are not exactly the most upstanding citizens of Bitcointalk. You'll be in terrible company:
It's true and this part made me laugh when I was reading it. But it sounds like you are threatening him not to do that.
For the record: it wasn't meant to be a threat. More like a warning of how it makes him look.

This still applies (both for GazetaBitcoin as well as for Ratimov):
My take: both of you should remove the negative feedback. If I would loan either one of you $100, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't scam me. That's what the Trust system is for, and that means negative feedback is unwarranted.
You guys don't like each other: that's okay! Agree to disagree. Ignore each other. Or get a beer together. Find common ground instead of drama.
@GazetaBitcoin: go for neutral! Ratimov is off DT1, isn't it time to de-escalate further?

we know LoyceV's weight.
Lol.

Maybe I should have done it earlier, but I'm not a supporter of crucifying and expelling someone from the forum. I expected a different epilogue.
I feel the same. I like to be sure enough so I don't have to change feedback or Trust list entries any time soon again.

I think he "played his card wrong", majority of the DTs were ready to refrain from taking action, understand [probably hoping] that he'll learn from his past mistakes. His recent retaliatory backfired.
When it comes to Trust inclusions, I've accepted that I can't and don't have to agree with everything. But if the number of actions I don't agree with keeps increasing, eventually the scale tips to the other side. I think it's a good thing more DT-members are like that. There's no need to rush decisions based on incidents.

I believe that majority of DT users were intimidated by the possibility they'll be excluded by him as well
There are others reasons not to rush to exclude anyone.

Seems, I am into the game where I don't know the rules well. I added him into my trust list because he helped me two or three times to rank up
That sounds a lot like buying your vote. Luckily, since nobody trusts your judgement, it doesn't matter much. You should probably read my Beginners guide to correct use of the Trust system (I know I'm the third person mentioning that now) though, so you include users for the right reasons.
2514  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: As a Bitcoin Core only user, how im supposed to pay someone in person? on: November 07, 2023, 10:21:20 AM
Im not familiar with phones.
I strongly dislike phones: they're annoyingly small to type, the screen is 5% of what I'm used to, they need daily recharging, and they're fragile. But: it's a necessary evil nowadays.

Quote
Btw, what I meant with this thread, wasn't to say, I want to use Bitcoin Core on a phone, I can reasonably compromise, I just want to do it properly. I will mix at home, get the amount to use ready, and put it into mobile Electrum or whatever. Im not going to know the address until I arrive, so I cannot sign it at home. Then I also need to sort out how to transfer this through Tor from the phone. What I don't like is the traces that this would leave in terms of, imagine you lose your phone somewhere or something. Since im not familiar with phones, I don't know what to expect if that happens. Could some experienced phone users comment on this whole process?
First: I've never lost my phone, but I always assume that can happen at any moment. That means I don't do banking on my phone, I use a separate email account, I backup my data, and for Bitcointalk I use my not-to-be-trusted Mobile account.
For small, "daily" transactions, I keep some crypto on Unstoppable wallet on my phone. I set it up to use "From Blockchain" instead of "API" for privacy, and to use Tor. That makes it slower, but more private. If I lose my phone, I'll sweep my wallet. The wallet has a PIN, the phone has it's own security. And the amount on there is low.
2515  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: As a Bitcoin Core only user, how im supposed to pay someone in person? on: November 06, 2023, 02:26:05 PM
It has a 6" screen and weighs 1.03 pounds. This is designed for specific industrial applications. For me, 10" is the minimum to be able to type "normally". That brings me into the netbook category, but most of them lack RAM capacity.

How about a good old paper wallet? Bitaddress.org is the easiest, but doesn't support Segwit. You can encrypt it with BIP38, and fund it with approximately the amount of Bitcoin you're going to need. When completing the trade, your trade partner can just sweep your private key from his own mobile device.
2516  Other / Meta / Re: Switching to Presearch search engine for bitcointalk? on: November 06, 2023, 02:14:16 PM
The moment I read this:
Quote
get rewarded with the Presearch decentralized search engine, powered by blockchain technology.
I know it's not worth it. There's absolutely no reason to add a blockchain to a search engine, and adding "tokens" trying to monetize is something I've seen thousands of times.
So sad, let me bet a sat, it would be rewarded with sats you would be all over it... it's revenue sharing, then you can always change your PRE for sats... duh.
Is it really that hard to understand I don't need to earn a fraction of a cent to search the internet? Someone else on the other hand would love to earn a fraction of a cent for each time millions of people search the internet.
2517  Other / Meta / Re: Request for a board of made-up stories on: November 06, 2023, 12:34:55 PM
posts like that should fit well in off-topic board
I don't think so:
Other topics that might be of interest to bitcoiners.

Playing devil's advocate here: what if made-up stories are part of someone's OPSEC?
2518  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: As a Bitcoin Core only user, how im supposed to pay someone in person? on: November 06, 2023, 11:43:55 AM
Linux Laptop installed with "hacker UI" would make it stand out Tongue. Although it's trivial problem since you could just not use terminal.
Install a privacy filter on your screen. Or does that make you stand out too?
2519  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: As a Bitcoin Core only user, how im supposed to pay someone in person? on: November 06, 2023, 11:00:01 AM
Transaction fees went up between creating the transaction and meeting in person?
This could be fixed by using the RBF-feature(Replace-by-fee) in Bitcoin Core.
That doesn't help you if you brought a signed transaction to a meeting, and left your Bitcoin Core at home.
2520  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: As a Bitcoin Core only user, how im supposed to pay someone in person? on: November 06, 2023, 10:29:39 AM
You cannot also carry your laptop.
Why not?

Quote
Is there any handheld device that would make sense to use to do this transaction that doesn't stand out?
Yes. It's called a laptop Tongue

the only solution for your problem is to make a signed transaction(offline transaction) first in your house(don't forget to ask him about the price and BTC address)
I can think of many potential problems. What if:
  • Transaction fees went up between creating the transaction and meeting in person?
  • You buy something at a shop and their automated payment system won't be able to give you an address and exact amount before making the payment?
  • The seller doesn't want to email you a Bitcoin address for various reasons?

@OP: I use different wallets for different purposes. The purpose of mobile wallets is convenience for small amounts. You simply can't have it all with Bitcoin Core.
I often bring a laptop, not for making Bitcoin transactions but for other purposes. Nobody bats an eye if you pull out a laptop somewhere. Tether a hotspot on your phone and you have your own internet connection with you.
