This is an amazing thread and very inspiring, but as someone new to the game I have to ask this question. You have a full-time job and an amazing set-up, one that seems like you should be making money hand over fist. Do you choose to work a full-time job along with mining or is there something I'm overlooking and the money isn't there?

The last year gpu mining has been really good  amazing good.  But mining successfully depends on  difficulty ,your gear, your  power cost  and price of coins.
So while many people are making good money  it could slow up and prices good fall. I would never count on this to last  at this level for years to come.  But  for one or two years it could happen.  Op could make say 4000 a month for 2 straight years.  I could make say 1000 a month for 2 straight years.

But I live in New Jersey  and you kind of need 5000 a month  after taxes to live decently.
Op lives in Texas  has a wife and kids   So 5000 a month after taxes most likely is not enough for him.

My guess he keeps his day job just in case.
25303  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Fourth alt coin thread last three got oversized. on: May 08, 2017, 05:28:45 PM

Ordered these; I will see what the problem is when I get them.

Not sure if you care but you can get the newer/better i3-7100 cheaper as it has a $10 off code Smiley

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117734&ignorebbr=1

he got the 6100 on purpose to duplicate my board setup.

If he gets it running it is a good board as it can do 2,3,4 cards and is m sized.

which mean a very small 4 card cool build is possible.

I want to showcase a four card riser build with a m-sized board.

the i3 6100 and i3 6100 t  are pretty cheap on ebay and amazon used.

Looking for some advice, I'm a little confused on how to best cool a farm of open air rigs on shelves.

With an open-air rig of non-reference GPUs, should I be pushing cool air over the rear of the rig and pulling hot air from the front where the GPUs are? Or is it the other way around?

fan >>> rig - gpu >>> fan >>>

@ talking dreams   xmr on the cpu and zec on the gpu    check your watts used  vs your hash rate

Wouldn't that take ages to get some decent return? I mean such a high difficult coins.

duh  I did not realize  you are talkingdreams Grin

Sorry just pick a worthless coin  and mine it  then hodl it.

So I would say mine cpu+gpu  hodl coin and hold it.  Maybe it goes up

25306  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Power on: May 08, 2017, 04:08:04 PM
How much do you think a s7 would use over clocked to like 5.6 th/s?

I think it won't do it.  but if it did it would be  5600/4   = 1400 to 1500 watts

rule of thumb divide  hash rate by 4 and add 7%  so 5600/4 = 1400 x 1.07 = 1498 watts   this is for the s-7 at 5.6 th

for s-9 divide hash rate by 10  and add 10%  so 13.5tb s-9 =  13500 /10 = 1350 x 1.1 = 1485 watts for the  s-9 at 13.5 th

And I would be surprised to see a s-7 do 5.6th

The sticks - indeed - would be cooled on their side which concerns me from the efficiency point of view. What do you guys think?
Once a fan is used the orientation of the heatsink is a moot point unless it is one very tiny low-flow fan. Keeping fins vertical only matters with convection cooling.

I do hope you have read my earlier posts about the power layout of the Plugable 7-port hub...

I think that laptop idea will not work well

  in his case  :

                __l___l__   >>  hub and sticks

               ------------- >> cooler

I think  the hub blocks air flow  to the sticks if he lays the hub on the fan and points sticks up wards

interesting day . . . but SUPER busy. more to come soon. hopefully.

tbh, not so much fun yet with this series but i'm sure more will come.

Eager to see the numbers Smiley

these are running at smos

posted here as I do not do many 5 card rigs. Forget about six Grin
but this rig will use risers pointed out on this thread.
and the op sent me a nice break out board.
and yslyung sent me some cables and a nice pico board.

25309  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Review of Galax 1070 Katana GPU (notice only it has not arrived) on: May 08, 2017, 01:06:06 PM
Where did you buy that?

Last I heard Galax brand GPUs aren't sold in North America.

they have a direct store only purchase

 http://galaxstore.net/

http://galaxstore.net/GALAX-GeForce-GTX-1070-KATANA_p_130.html

this is the only way to buy it in the usa.

My guess is  even though it reads in stock.  The stock may not be in the USA.
They  wait for  enough people to order it from the USA link  and ship  at that point.

The link and the store are real.

Here is the facebook page for   them in the US

https://www.facebook.com/GalaxyUS/

I did business with them 1 other time...  And   they were slow to ship.

But I can use this size card in  a few of my builds.  So I am willing to wait a bit.

It is 9 am  In NY  and they are near Chicago  So  maybe they will reply to my email  in a few hours.

It is a paypal order  so I do not have fear of a ripoff in any way.

UPDATE: I got an email response it is expected to ship may 10 via fedex.  I may get it by fri or next monday.

Hi guys,

A little bit off-topic and probably silly question: do you think a laptop cooler would be okay to use as a solution for the 2Pacs?
I was thinking to sit the hub & sticks on this Deepcool N200 cooler, I'm assuming it would cool better than a normal USB fan.

so lay hub on its side        I think it is not ideal  as I think  the air moved by the cooler will not flow fast due to small grill.  I found one on ebay  for  22 usd

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Deepcool-N200-USB-Cooling-Stand-Pad-cooler-mat-For-Laptop-Notebook-10-15-6-/151877092837?

seems to me this would work better  and it is 18 usd

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Holmes-10-inch-Personal-Size-Box-Fan-HABF120W-/142100873644?

better yet this one is 9.99

I ordered it on may 5  it is yet to ship.  Says it is in stock.  I will send them an email later today.

I just emailed them.  I will post back later today.

Phil,

the biostar tb85 will work for sure; use the ASRock H81 PRO BTC or BIOSTAR TB85 image

if any of these mobos don't OC a card let me know and I will get one myself and provide a fully supported image for it.

biostar b150s1 ( try the ASRock H81 PRO BTC or BIOSTAR TB85 image )

biostar z170gt7 ( try the ASRock H81 PRO BTC or BIOSTAR TB85 image )  no go with z270 stick

gigabyte b250m-gaming 3 (  try the MSI Z270-A PRO image ) no go with z270 stick

gigabyte aorus z270 ( try the MSI Z270-A PRO image )

gigabyte ga270-hd3 ( try the MSI Z270-A PRO image )

Edit:  also v0014 is for USB keys only, it will NOT autoboot an SSD or HDD.

IMO USB keys are easier to build and deploy plus are (usually) significantly cheaper.  If you use this one: https://www.amazon.com/Lexar-JumpDrive-16GB-Flash-Drive/dp/B00S5V5PMY it is also fast enough to even use the GUI with ease.

I now use the lexar usb keys on all my rigs and have a stack of unused SSDs and M2s waiting to be made into a burst or storj or sia rig.

I get it to boot and it hangs right after first screen  with choices I let it go to 16.05 then it hangs

Which mobo is this; and what are all the other components of the rig?

I used a 1070 just 1 card.
I used a 32 gb sandisk usb 3  it works well for smos so I wrote over the 0014 version
I used the gigabyte b250m gaming 3 mobo

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813145007

it can do up to 4 cards

I used an evga 750 p2 psu
1 stick of ddr4 ram 4gb

I used a monitor connected via  the nvidia and a usb mouse and a usb keyboard.

the screen came up

1 unbutu
2 advanced
3 memtest
4 memtest
5 win 10 dev

I waited it went to unbutu 16.04  and hung

this unit has an intel i3 6100 cpu

I will test with a new mobo and an intel i5 7500

I already asked that question - but did not get a clear answer.

Is it possible to modify BIOS for 1080ti card using the same tools as for RX 480? Can be that BIOS flashed with the same tools as we are doing with RX 480?

No  but the guy to ask is wolf0  he is one of the flashing experts.

or ask elovip
25315  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New ETH rig dropping 25%-75% HR every so often on: May 07, 2017, 11:38:35 PM
I have had similar issues due to memory errors and heat. Have you ran hwinfo to check for errors? You might need to drop your memory a bit. Have you bumped the power limit up? I set my fans at a static speed so that the cards don't throttle when the fans slow down and the gpu heats up.

drop all memory clocks by 50

drop all core by 25

lower

-ethi  to 7

that pulse in hash simply means the card clocks and intensity  setting is too high.

so hashrate throttles

I used to get single mode or dual mode on my msi gamer  rx 480 and asus  strix 480  all 8gb cards.

I simply lower everything a little at a time  til it stopped.

And I have all i5 intel cpus  and only 2 or 3 card rigs using 750 watt p2 evga  so it is not a psu or a cpu issue  the pulse is simply clock or intensity issue

@ klintay  will you be selling the 20 port 3.0 hub soon?
I may pick one up from you.

No plans at the moment, for eyeboot we only have the 19 port usb 3.0 hub still.

But we will be selling the 16 port usb 3.0 hub from Sipolar and a few of their other products so watch out for that
thanks for the tip

I have all of the above on hand

I have this mobo on the way

I want to test your os in any or all of the above.
25320  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Fourth alt coin thread last three got oversized. on: May 07, 2017, 02:17:14 PM
you have an hp  gpu  am i correct?

if you do it is a custom bios and may not  work like a standard  1080.

did you load  msi afterburner and try to use that?

also zotac has a  tweaker

http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/zotac-firestorm-download.html

I would  try msi afterburner  4.3

with

75% power
100+ core
300+ memory
75% manual fan

then try  the same settings with zotac firestorm.

Thanks

Looks like I have 5 HP, 1 ASUS, 1 EVGA. They look the EXACT same.

I tried looking up supported clocks for each card and I got the same thing.

Okay  then  the hp bios  could be in conflict  with the evga program  .

load msi afterburner 4.3  and try to set each  gpu with

75% tdp
100+ core
300+ ram
75% manual fan.

this means you don't check the synch  gpu on afterburner

you need to understand it may not be the hp gpu  but you have 7 gpus  that are mixed  and this can cause a conflict in the software you are trying to use.

BTW  trying to run 7 cards can be very hard.
trying to run 7 cards mixed can be impossible.

trouble shooting can be next to impossible

in fact  you could have 1 riser that is weak and it causes the conflict.

5 hp
1 asus
1 evga

is complex.
