2541  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What do you think of this change on the GUI on: March 04, 2018, 06:28:13 PM
And so far anyone registering on this website using Core, the first thing they should do is get a legacy address and stake it on the "stake your address" thread in case you lose your account, because for now segwit addresses can't do the job for signing and verification.

As far as I know, Electrum has no problem with signing messages with both Nested and Bech32 type of address. Although, you can verify signed message with these types of address only using the latest Electrum, it seems that their implementation isn't compatible with others. The lack of standard takes its toll. This feature is quite popular, Bitcoin Core Team should fix it in the next version.

2542  Economy / Economics / Re: Would you rather see steady growth in Bitcoin or strong upward spikes instead? on: March 04, 2018, 11:35:16 AM
In my opinion, steady growth would be much better. Strong spikes showed us that Bitcoin is not prepared for huge amount of transaction. As far as I remember, it all started somewhere around SegWit activation in August 2017. Bitcoin price stabilized recently and even fees went down to 1 sat/b, they weren't that cheap for years. What will happen after next price spike? Both Bitcoin Core 0.16.0 and Electrum have SegWit support which might help a little. We still have to wait for Lightning Network developers to make it more stable. Also, it seems that huge spikes attract more investors, quite dangerous when you think more about it.
2543  Economy / Economics / Re: Cash is best for anonymity? on: March 04, 2018, 09:46:40 AM
Cash is not completely anonymous like Bitcoin. You still have to meet the person you want to trade with in the real life. Also, it is quite dangerous to carry a bag with lots of money inside. I would rather use Monero if I had to. Due to its design, its transactions are completely anonymous which means lower risk. I don't think that a cryptocurrency backed by anything can survive. Fiat also used to be backed by gold and look what happened. Petrodollar is said to be backed by oil, who will ensure that is stays like that?
2544  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is it possible to retrieve deleted address? on: March 04, 2018, 09:20:40 AM
You should still be able to use the old address since Blockchain.info generates new addresses from you wallet's xPUB. A lot of people who participate in the signature campaigns use Blockchain.info and it seems that they don't have any issues with reusing addresses. Nobody else will be able to use this address. Anyway, consider switching to Electrum, you won't have to trust third party to keep your bitcoins safe.

#Edit: buwaytress was a bit faster than me, I'll keep my post since it might be also helpful.
2545  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S - Need help recovering BTC sent to BCH address on: March 03, 2018, 09:05:16 PM
It worked! Thank you. The addresses were visible without any further action.

(I think the Ledger method you mean is the one at the link above)

I'm glad that you have managed to recover your coins, try to be more careful next time.
You can see on the picture below what I actually meant. I was not able to check further steps because I have sold my Ledger Nano S sometime ago.

2546  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S - Need help recovering BTC sent to BCH address on: March 03, 2018, 08:35:57 PM
The address was generated using my seed words so I must be the owner.

There is also this link: https://support.ledgerwallet.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005304849-How-to-recover-BTC-sent-to-a-BCH-split-address
but it requires the Ledger client to be working. Of course it would be ideal if I could get it working. If I can't find another solution soon I'll try using the client on another computer.

Download the latest Electrum wallet and try importing your seed. Electrum will ask you for a derivation path. Replace the first number (44) with 49 and hit next. Check the addresses tab to see your addresses and their balance, it might be not visible unless you enable it in the "View".

Edit: You can also try to restore a wallet using your Ledger which won't force you to enter seed. I don't remember how it works so I don't know if you can change the derivation path.
2547  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S - Need help recovering BTC sent to BCH address on: March 03, 2018, 08:28:41 PM
Ledger, Trezor and other companies should start to support the new Bitcoin Cash address format. A lot of people accidentally send their BTC to BCH address or the opposite.
The only thing I could find was the link below. However, it is an instruction for recovering Bitcoin Cash from SegWit address. Are you the owner of the address to which you sent BTC? If so, recovery should be possible.

2548  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin Bank on: March 03, 2018, 06:43:45 PM
*you can have this kind of secured crypto savings account who doesnt get hacked
*you can loan crypto for initial capital investment for trading and others

It is impossible to create something that cannot be hacked. A lot of people still think that banks are impossible to breach but I really doubt it. I don't understand why people use web wallets and I have no idea why would they give their crypto to a bank which would "secure their crypto". The best method for now is cold storage and I guess it won't change for years. I wouldn't risk lending crypto. Assuming that their price would be still volatile, you could get into a serious problem.
2549  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Will other coins beat bitcoin in the future? on: March 02, 2018, 10:39:43 PM
Of course, it is possible for some coin to surpass Bitcoin but it is very unlike to happen. In my opinion, if something could surpass Bitcoin then it would have to be one of the currently existing cryptocurrencies. I am not a fan of ICOs, a lot of people believe that the coin they select will grow in value the same as Bitcoin did. Bitcoin will continue to expand and become faster which will lead to a huge grown in its popularity. Some of you will probably disagree with me. If you do, please show me the cryptocurrency which could beat Bitcoin in your opinion.
2550  Economy / Economics / Re: Private Coins from banks and governments on: March 02, 2018, 09:52:22 PM
Banks have already started trying to implement "blockchain technology" into their current system. I think that they are trying to lure people who have heard about cryptocurrencies but they are not into more technical things. We can't really prevent it, can someone enlighten me why would they replace their system with something that won't change much for them and will only generate huge costs? The rich might try to create their own coin without any distinguishing features, pump it and then sell it.

I have sent you a private message regarding Polish translation. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
2552  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: TREZOR Model T touchscreen on: March 02, 2018, 07:43:58 PM
Pretty much. It just comes down to personal preference. One upside of a touch screen is probably that it will last longer compared to the buttons of the Trezor and Ledger Nano S, as they just feels so fragile in my opinion. Personally I'll stick with the Ledger Nano S though, I prefer that sort of USB flash drive look.
It's funny, I was thinking the exact opposite. In m mind it's another think to go wrong that I can't fix. Touch screens are nice, but adding complexity to something that is not user serviceable that can control money is bad IMO.
-Dave
My point as well. What is next ? Trezor wallet now comes with an inbuilt mp3 player and supports Bluetooth audio connections up-to storage capacity of 8 gbs ? This isn't product development,it's dissolving the cause  product was designed for.

Anything that takes as much functionality as possible away from a computer gets a thumbs up from me. The creativity of nefarious types is only going to get better and better. If you have to buy a Thai chicken to do your touchscreen typing then that's a cost worth paying.
How does touch-screen change anything ? Read the point above, creativity shouldn't make a duck look like a buffalo. That isn't art, this is just plain randomness.

Touchscreen might be easier to break but it is definitely better than it comes to using it. Also, PIN, seed and passphrase can be entered directly on the device so at least you don't have to worry about keyloggers. Ledger was the first one to create a touchscreen wallet with Bluetooth (which isn't supported by any app) and they discontinued their product which was more expensive than Trezor T and had less features (lack of SD card slot for example but is is probably due to the design of Ledger's devices).
2553  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What do you think of this change on the GUI on: March 02, 2018, 06:36:57 PM
In any case, noobs in general don't use full nodes. Anyone using a full node knows what that is anyway.

Actually, I often see that many people, in my country, recommend using either Bitcoin Core or Electrum as a first wallet. Usually, most newbies decide to use Electrum because it doesn't require you to download lots of data. I have met quite a lot people who didn't know about SegWit at all.

There's little reason to use legacy addresses except out of principle (i.e. those who hate segwit). For such people, they can start Bitcoin Core with addresstype=legacy, and hopefully those options will be available from the settings menu too (there's an open PR for that).

Oh, I almost forgot about people who would rather increase the blocksize. Well, even if Legacy wasn't included they still could use another software or even a paper wallet.
2554  Economy / Economics / Re: Bill Gates says crypto-currencies cause deaths on: March 01, 2018, 08:54:06 PM
Honestly, at first I thought that I saw another fake news and decided to ignore it but it quickly turned out that I was wrong. Why did he change his mind so suddenly? Cryptocurrencies are used by criminals, we all know it but blaming them for it is inappropriate. I would say that fiats have higher share when it comes to criminality. I understand the concern about terrorism but governments are abusing these tools. That's why we need cryptocurrency. Money privacy should be as important as correspondence privacy.
2555  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What do you think of this change on the GUI on: March 01, 2018, 08:00:06 PM
What's the point of keeping legacy? If some services are still not compatible with Bech32 then Nested should work just fine. Your GUI edit looks pretty good but it would confuse newbies which probably don't see any difference between these three types of addresses. Don't you think that there should be a short description of every type of address? I guess that Bech32 won't be a standard wallet because some services still have problem with this type of address.
2556  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Bitcoin - HYIP? on: March 01, 2018, 07:45:52 PM
Don't you think that Bitcoin is something more than a currency or a long-term investment? Take a look and count how many new jobs were created: miners, cryptocurrency traders and developers, hardware wallets engineers and so on. We can call it a new industry which is slowly growing and will eventually be worth billions of dollars. Bitcoin does not guarantee any profits, it is profitable because of investors and ordinary people who believe that Bitcoin will replace banks.
2557  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger nano S or Trezor T? on: March 01, 2018, 07:13:10 PM
The preorders have already been sent out from what you can read up on their official company website
https://blog.trezor.io/first-trezor-model-t-dispatched-warehouse-shipping-preorder-86615b55ffd3

and they are telling of the shipments of those individuals to expect an email to be received once they are shipped to them just released about 2 hours ago
https://twitter.com/TREZOR/status/969233175783333889

I hope they will finish shipping out pre-orders by the end of the next week. Did anyone here pre-ordered their new device? What batch are you in? I'm in the third batch. Magnetic dock is a nice thing to have but I have no idea where I should place it. What a pity that SD card features are not ready yet, hopefully they will release proper updates to enable such things as encrypting, labeling etc. According to TREZOR's twitter, regular sales should start in Q2 2018.
2558  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core 0.16.0 brings not just the long anticipated SegWit implementation on: March 01, 2018, 05:57:16 PM
I hope bech32 is more widely implemented ASAP, including on other cryptocurrencies, especially ones based on BTC addressing.  Having a human-readable prefix that clearly differentiates between various crypto assets is a great boost to usability as Bitcoin adoption grows to less technically savvy people.

Thanks to the 0.16 Bitcoin Core update, bech32 might become more popular in short period of time. It isn't default type of address, though. If they forced people to use them then the adaptation would be much faster but there are many services and exchanges which still don't support sending to such addresses. It looks like they don't really care about fees.

I really like your attitude to Bitcoin Core's actions. Most people would like to push a lot of upgrades as soon as possible. It causes a lot of technical problems and tension in the community. Since scalability problem seems to be solved for now (assuming that Lightning Network will succeed soon), maybe it's time for making transactions more private? Although, I'm afraid that this could lead to ban of Bitcoin in more countries.

2559  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano basic use on: March 01, 2018, 05:09:49 PM
I will use ledger nano for bitcoin but also for Ethereum and  Litecoin. You mean that ledger nano s is connected to a single Bitcoin node?

I didn't know that but i will not use everyday the hardware wallet , i will use it to store large sums of bitcoin and others altcoins.

What I meant was that if you want to use dedicated Chrome app with your Ledger Nano S created by Ledger Team, you won't be able to use your own node for Bitcoin and altcoins. This is a huge drawback because their servers could become overloaded - it actually happened in the past and that was one of the reasons why I sold my Ledger Nano S. If you are going to store only Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin then Trezor would be a great choice. It doesn't support as many altcoins as Ledger but its support is definitely great.
2560  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin must come back to its original use - currency ! on: February 28, 2018, 10:59:19 PM
That's quite interesting point of view. 2009-2010 would be definitely too early for Bitcoin to become noticed by large companies and governments. I guess you don't understand the point of Bitcoin's existence at all. Bitcoin was supposed to help us create a currency which wouldn't require any third party. Someone could now say that Lightning Network breaks this rule but keep in mind it's a second layer solution, nobody is forced to use it. No exchanges? No ability to keep coins in my own wallet generated offline? Let's go further. Get rid of miners and allow central banks to reverse or freeze transactions.
