25781  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: generating an HD wallet.dat file throught a seed? on: January 10, 2017, 04:24:03 PM
Ah I see, I remember reading something about how annoying it was having to constantly make new backups all the time with the old format.. in a way it forced you to always remember to backup tho lol.
In the old format, you could increase the keypool. I did this, it's set to 10,000 now. That made my wallet.dat about 6 MB large, and it holds more keys than I expect to use in many years to come.
If you're still using an older wallet.dat, I recommend doing so too. Although I would like to use a new HD-wallet, I don't want to lose my current addresses, so I'm still using the older format.

Note: backup the file wallet.dat right after increasing the keypool!
25782  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Make Blockchain Transfer Fee 0.00009 BTC And Save On Transfers on: January 10, 2017, 04:11:44 PM
Results from the past are no guarantee for future transactions.
First: sending 0.1 mBTC with 0.09 mBTC fee is rediculous: the feel is almost as high as the amount sent.
Second: not so long ago 0.1 mBTC fee was the normal fee for a fast confirmation, and much lower fees (say 0.05 mBTC) worked fine too.
At the moment you need closer to half a dollar to get a fast confirmation, which completely destroys the "low fee" argument Bitcoin used to have over banks, credit cards and Paypal.

I'll give you another trick: collect your dust!
https://btc.com/stats/unconfirmed-tx shows the recommended fee for a fast transaction. Usually it's 100 satoshi/byte, but it often drops to 20 too. When it's low, you can get a fast confirmation with little fee. If you have collected a lot of small incoming transactions, it will be expensive to spend it all, as the transaction will be large.
You can reduce the cost by collecting your small inputs: transfer them in 1 transaction to another address you own. Do this when you don't need the money.
By the time you need to make a payment, you can make one small (and hence lower fee) transaction that confirms quickly.
25783  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What's the Point of ICO Escrow? on: January 10, 2017, 09:21:12 AM
What if the owners/creators/developers take none of the proceeds and its all used to further the altcoin in ways that don't involve paying salaries, etc?
In that case it's likely they use the money to increase the "value" of their pre-mined coins. One way or another, they do it for themselves.
Don't get me wrong, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, although it would be better if they're open about that goal. In reality, they - for example - make up all sorts of possible future uses for the coin. Most likely, this will never be accomplished. That's why we have hundreds (maybe thousands?) of altcoins, and that's why they're also called "shitcoins".
25784  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What's the Point of ICO Escrow? on: January 10, 2017, 07:39:37 AM
So, lets say you've developed a new altcoin and you're going to do an ICO. How does escrow protect coin purchasers? I mean, the dev team is eventually going to get access to the BTC at the end of the crowdsale, at which point they could just steal it all.
You call it "steal", but it's just what an ICO (or IPO in general) is meant to do: raise money for the old owners/creators. Don't make the mistake thinking they do it for you.

25786  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trouble encrypting an existing paper wallet. on: January 09, 2017, 04:31:39 PM
I may have a masters degree but it definitely isn't in computer science, so this sort of thing is very difficult to grasp for me if explanations are in technical terms.
In this case it is important to understand a few fundamentals before using Bitcoin. Most important for now: if you use a paper wallet, you have to swipe the entire balance. If you only use a part, the remainder does not "stay on the paper wallet" but is transfered as change to another address. Make sure not to lose the change.
To make the transfer, you'll need a wallet.

Quote
I was thinking of a pass phrase being like a PIN number for a debit card, an extra security needed to access an account. I didn't realize it was just a way to decode an account number.
Don't think of it as an account, think of it as a wallet. But with one crucial difference: the moment someone has seen it, he can always use it.

Quote
All of the paper wallets I've seen or used contain QR codes for each key, as well as a string of numbers beneath these keys. If these are the keys, then what is the point of encrypting something that is already in plain view on the wallet itself?
I suggest you just try it! Make a few paper wallets. Some encrypted, some not encrypted. Just see/feel/test the difference.

bitaddress.org has already been mentioned as site to create a (nice looking) paper wallet. Another option is bitcoinpaperwallet.com.

My Firefox 50.1.0 (running on Linux Mint) has a problem displaying several signatures.

A screenshot from the OP:
On the left: Chromium. On the right: Firefox.

It's been like this for as long as I can remember. My own signature doesn't show correctly either.
Adjusting zoom-settings doesn't matter. I prefer using Firefox though. Am I the only one with this problem?
25791  Economy / Speculation / Re: Possible scenarios for 2017 and beyond on: January 06, 2017, 03:57:47 PM
Ideal scenario:

Bitcoin solves both its governance and scaling issues, raising the max blocksize and removing those from power who have allowed their ego to delude their vision.

Worst-case scenario:

Core continues to strangle bitcoin with a 1mb blocksize. Community remains divided, half believing in the eventual success of "Lightning Network" and the other half seeing through Core's charade.
I'd like to see a combination of both: larger blocks, but also something like Lighting Network where nodes can earn a small fee per transaction. The combination would lead to competition for miners, leading to lower fees again. Currently fees can barely compete with banks or creditcards.

Without larger blocks Bitcoin won't get more transactions, without more transactions it won't get more users, and without many more users I don't see the price go up 10-fold again like it did in the past.
25792  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator/miner [v0.22] on: January 06, 2017, 07:51:08 AM
Can anybody tell me what i have to do to get the programm running?

C:\Users\xxxxxxxxxxxx\Desktop\vanitygen-0.22-win>oclvanitygen.exe -v -d 1 1Bastian

  0: [Intel(R) Corporation] Intel(R) HD Graphics
  1: [Intel(R) Corporation]         Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 1037U @ 1.80GHz
I don't think oclvanitygen will work on Intel HD Graphics. That leaves CPU-only, which is a lot slower, but should work. Try vanitygen.exe instead of "ocl".

25795  Economy / Speculation / Re: HUGE Drop coming! on: January 05, 2017, 01:14:08 PM
Every single time there is a little move, a post like this goes up. My response is always the same: look at a historical chart. Realize this is completely pedestrian in Bitcoin.
I've noticed it usually drops a lot faster than it rises. It now dropped $150 in an hour, while it took 4 days to go up by that amount.
I can only conclude panic sales on the way down are much stronger than people trying to jump the train on the way up.

How are you ensuring security when you're sharing the public and private key? If we put funds in these wallets you could withdraw them, no?
Please read the thread. Or just the OP. Or the first few posts. Or hey, if that doesn't convince you, you know as much as I do, all information is public. I even show the balance behind all addresses I've created. Pick one, give it your best shot! Try to take the funds. You'll realize you don't have the private key, and a public key isn't going to do you any good.
Nobody is sharing any private keys here.
