Now it's hard to imagine I only joined because I like Rollin 7 months ago, without expecting to reach the minimum number of posts. It turned out pretty good.

Does that mean validating 10 blocks (each 0.2 MB) takes less time than validating 2 blocks (each 1 MB)? That would explain it, although I don't get why this would be different.
I only have 4 GB RAM so much more dbcache won't work.

Probably I've had this on my mind for a while, and reading about the 20 MB blocks triggered it.

Does anyone know why current blocks take so much longer to download in Bitcoin Core than old blocks? As far I as know the increased difficulty is only related to mining and has nothing to with checking downloaded blocks.

Example: When I start a fresh installation of Bitcoin Core, it starts downloading the blockchain. It quickly goes through the first years with small blocks, then after that it's downloading with more than 2 MB/s continuously. That means at least 2 blocks per second (say 90 seconds to download 1 day's worth of blocks). But when it gets closer to the current date, it slows down.
Now when I start Bitcoin Core, it downloads fast for a bit, then stops, continues a bit later again, and then downloading stops entirely for a long time. CPU load is low, hard drive I can't hear (and I have no indicator LED). My question is: why is it so slow? Why can't it continue to download 2 MB/s so I can update 3 days in 5 minutes?

This also happens on a trimmed version of the blockchain, so it can't be caused by Bitcoin Core checking all transactions on disk. The only thing that also gets bigger in the trimmed version, is the chainstate directory (now 1.6 GB). Could that be what slows it down?

As another test, on my old Atom laptop, it updates 3 weeks blockchain in 2 calendar days. To come back to the statement I quoted: if blocks would be 20 times larger, and I extrapolate this, my old Atom couldn't keep up anymore. And if this gets worse in the future, it could become a limitation for faster hardware too.

While I've typed all this, Bitcoin Core running on my i3 still says "3 days behind", the same as when I started typing. Network activity has slowed down to just a few kB/s "background" level. What is it doing?

oclvanitygen needs about 1 second to start up, which makes it slower than vanitygen for short strings.
140,000 addresses was just 17 MB, so it's not a limitation.

Make one and link it here The only problem is, once you do, the key is worthless.
My computer is still searching for matches from my 25000 words in the 140000 addresses. No match yet. I am only searching for long words.

That may have been me 38000 entries now. Some are duplicate, as vanitygen always tells me. For example: abandon/abandoned overlap. End result is it searches 25000 prefixes. I just composed it from a few "long word lists" I downloaded.
I have 7000 addresses saved now, with lots of duplicate prefixes. I only keep the special ones, the rest is just stored in a long list. I haven't been searching in a while.

I made this puzzle 2 weeks ago. It doesn't require a search for vanity addresses, but it did include them.

Why would you want something random? To make sure nobody has it already? You could just pick a Bitcoin-related word. But even then, it's nothing more than a combination of computing power and luck to see who wins.

Unless you make it a more fun thing to do than searching for some random strings that will never look more impressive than any random addy.

I typed a 1 in front of the copy-pasted prefix, that lead to the very high difficulty.

I didn't have HHHHHHH in my list yet. Added now. If someone wants to use it, add these prefixes to a txt-file:
666666666 has 9 decimals now, as it's the only number prefix that I have with 8 decimal already.
I search case-sensitive, that's why they're all in the list with both cases.

I think there's a bug in the difficulty from oclvanitygen: if I search just the above list case-sensitive it gives the exact same difficulty as case insensitive. If I just search 1AAAAAAAA case insensitive, it expects to be faster than the full list.

I think he messed up the slider with his script. He's rolling > 1.99. If he would really get 98.0 only all the time, he would bet >97.9 and win a lot.
