How does hashing works?

Is it correct to state that when hashing at 1 khash/s, your device is calculating a hash every millisec? So a block time of even 1 second is no problem per se, since even a slow miner is able to produce many thousand hashes in this time span.

Network latency seems the larger problem to me then, since data transport takes up 'a lot of' millisecs and you ain't hashing useful output just before and useful data just after a new block is accepted by the network. More blocks means more hashing for nothing in between...

Yeah, at 1 KH/s each hash takes a millisecond. If any of those hashes are below the pool "target", you get a share. If any of those hashes are below the network "target", you've found a block, and the pool gets payed.

Latency is important. Both latency from the miner to the pool, which will produce rejects, and latency from the pool to the network, which will produce orphans.

my ip changes often so i think that wouldnt work here

I can get your IP when you connect to the pool. Firewalls would be an issue though, especially with multi-rig setups. Who knows if those settings really need to be changed dynamically anyways. Probably too much work.

if u change e q and s what does this mean for coins like ltc and nvc ?

I would like to know this as well.

Theoretically, you guys could give the pool access to your cgminer API, and I could update your queue/expiry settings optimally whenever we switch coins.

Yes and my mining system physically stopped responding again.  How does whatever the pool is doing effect a miner to the point it stops responding?  Love this pool but may have to bail.  Never had outages before joining this pool and profitability in some ways is dependent on your miner running.

JR

cgminer becomes unstable if it's constantly stopping and restarting. If you aren't already, use CGWatcher. It mostly eliminates the problem.

Edit: Oh, your system crashed? I also think that when cgminer stops and starts, it heats up your GPU more than usual for some reason.

Looks like the pool is down...

Back up.

Shares are not discrete chunks of work like you think they are. They are hashes you find that are less than the target number.
267  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] profit switching auto-exchanging pool - middlecoin.com on: August 07, 2013, 03:54:39 PM
... everyone will be suffering from the high orphan rate. Maybe tuning the amount of hashing power directed to these fast coins during their low difficulty might help.

They way my pool is set up, there is currently no way to redirect less than all the hashpower to any one coin. Which is a flaw.

But even if I could, in this case I wouldn't reduce our hashpower to DGC and WDC. If the coins were at risk somehow, I might. But the only downside right now is that the orphan rate is high. And that is mitigated by the low difficulty. So things kind of balance out.

One more question recently I barely manage to receive 0.04 BTC / Day for 1.2 MH/S isn't that a bit low?
It also looks as if I have some quantity stuck at "Immature Unexchanged Balance (estimated BTC)".

I think that is slightly low. There haven't been great coins to mine recently.

I calculate that LTC mining produces 0.0307 BTC per MH/s per day with no fees and a 1% reject rate and 1% orphan rate. So you are still 7.8% more profitable than that.

Maybe someone can double check my math. I just did it using a price of 0.02616 and a difficulty of 838.419.

About your immature unexchanged balance, there does seem to be a bug preventing a few blocks from moving from that state into the unexchanged balance state. But it should be a very small percentage of your immature balance. Most of it is probably NovaCoin blocks still maturing.

Guys, probably a stupid question, but why aren't we mining primecoin?
Looks like it's pretty profitable.

I don't believe there is a publicly available GPU miner. As far as I know, the GPU mining programs are private. I've been mining primecoin on my CPU, but I don't think it even covers the cost of electricity.

Payouts were an hour late today. Profits were 0.0334 BTC per MH/s per day.
271  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] profit switching auto-exchanging pool - middlecoin.com on: August 06, 2013, 12:17:40 PM
I see that a payout "processed" but yet to see anything in my cryptsy wallet.   It has usually not taken near this long.  Was there issues??

No, it should have gone through. This is the transaction, and it has 68 confirms: http://blockchain.info/tx/d4f58a4ffd181a9cf9b4338fe655045537361705237b3fb2dfc05745c34d4170

I hope I wasn't wrong about it being OK to receive payments through cryptsy.

We've been mining FTC for the past hour. We just switched to DGC, so your rejected rate is expected to go from 1% to 15%.
273  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] profit switching auto-exchanging pool - middlecoin.com on: August 06, 2013, 04:09:41 AM
The pool is mining one of the losing coins right now. In the last 4 minutes that I have been watching, my 7950's could only squeak in 1 share between the zillions of new block messages.  No way that will be profitable...  Oops, just squeaked in another one while I was typing...

Yeah, we have a 25% reject rate. But the math says we're 3 times more profitable than LTC. It will be nice to know for sure though.
274  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] profit switching auto-exchanging pool - middlecoin.com on: August 06, 2013, 03:46:14 AM
I appreciate that you believe that they "are in fact" more profitable (I'm sure under some scenario they are), that's just not the results that I and a lot of others experience.

...

I have spent many hours studying the pool results, minute(s) by minute(s), during the mining of the various coins, and absolutely see a strong correlation. Please consider this a real problem, even though you seem to believe that it is not. I want to stay in your pool, but this makes it much less economical.

I definitely want to look at it.

A major flaw right now in the pool, and one that I'm currently working on, is proper reporting. While the math says that a certain coin is more profitable, I don't have any easy way to tell for sure, other than doing painstaking manual database lookups.

What I really need is a profit graph. Then I can see where it dips, and what coin we were at then.
275  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] profit switching auto-exchanging pool - middlecoin.com on: August 06, 2013, 03:26:09 AM
Are you sure about that? I know that 16x 32dif shares will pay out the same as 1x 512dif share, but when we hit those blocks that simply fly by without any solved shares wouldn't it be better to get a few 32dif shares in? Or is it simply about solving blocks at that point making shares irrelevant?

Sorry if this has been discussed already, I haven't had time to read this entire thread.

If blocks come frequently, that doesn't make high difficulty shares any less likelier.

It increases your reject rate, but it does so equally for high difficulty shares and low difficulty shares.
276  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] profit switching auto-exchanging pool - middlecoin.com on: August 06, 2013, 03:12:44 AM
We can be "autoswitching into dud coins" because it is very possible that coins look very nice on paper (theoretically the most profitable) but in practice it could not be the most profitable, even by a long shot. The whole point of this pool is indeed to attempt to switch to the most profitable but perhaps some real-world conditions are coming into play that are not taken into account when calculating the most profitable coin on paper

There are some real world factors I don't take into account very well. One is that when we switch, we lose out on a few seconds of hashing. I've "tweaked" some specific coins to adjust for this, as to not switch as often to coins that are only going to be mined for 10 seconds then switch back.

Also, I'm sure it's the case that having that gap while switching is putting wear and tear on GPU fans, and creating system instability.

The real solution is to eliminate the gap.
277  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] profit switching auto-exchanging pool - middlecoin.com on: August 06, 2013, 03:01:55 AM
The switcher had been stuck on litecoin for 2 hours prior to the payout today. Sorry about that.

... rejected hashrate skyrockets. In addition, after that happens, my accepted and my rejected hash rate added together do not equal my total hashrate, and they should.

I have been noticing that as well. When the reject rate increases, the total hashrate drops. At first I was thinking it was that people were using --no-submit-stale, but that shouldn't account for that much hashrate loss.

High hash rates and luck lead to lower rejects, while ping also plays a smaller factor. The smaller miners (5xxx and 6xxx cards) get crushed with these coins, while fast cards don't fare all that much better with 512 difficulty coins.

If I'm misunderstanding something, I apologize. I'd appreciate an explanation to understand properly, though.

Yeah, I think you're right about 5xxx and 6xxx cards getting more reject rates. So they are hurting.

But also, the people on the top end are hurting too. They are losing out on profits they could have had if we had switched to high block rate coins more often. The people doing the best are in the middle, because I average the stats when choosing coins.

I've talked way too much about difficulty in this thread. It doesn't play a factor.
278  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] profit switching auto-exchanging pool - middlecoin.com on: August 06, 2013, 02:45:28 AM
Unfortunately, another bad payout. 0.0293 BTC per MH/s per day.

The coins we switch to that have low difficulty are in fact more profitable. Even with the high reject rate, sometimes as much as 70%.

The people who benefit from these coins most are those with low reject rates. Not those with high hashrates.

Well that was odd. I had .03 BTC confirmed a bit ago and now down to .027 when I refreshed again.

JR

That should never happen. What is your address?
279  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] profit switching auto-exchanging pool - middlecoin.com on: August 05, 2013, 08:45:45 PM
It appears we were mining for 30 minutes while the pool was broken, and not recording shares or submitting blocks.

Is it supposed to be working now as I'm getting 0.1 M/H right now.  Should be getting 1.2 at least.

Thanks.

Yeah it should be fixed now. Are you seeing 0.1 MH/s on just the stats page, or in cgminer too? If just on the stats page, restart cgminer and let me know if that fixed anything.
280  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] profit switching auto-exchanging pool - middlecoin.com on: August 05, 2013, 08:28:21 PM
Oh wait, I don't think stratum-mining-proxy will work for a switching pool like mine. It looks like you have to run a daemon of the coin you're mining on the pool. I'm not really sure though.
