Thanks guys for your kind words. It has been a mega effort getting everything together, and it is exciting seeing it coming to fruition. We are at the stage now where this will definitely go ahead. That is exciting. As we're all aware, the biggest possible stumbling block here is when we get the chips, so basically we just all need to send out positive vibes to the bitcoin mining gods that Bitfury does actually deliver when promised. At this stage, there are no further updates on that front. We are quoted for early to mid October so lets just hope that really happens.

It is indeed a shame that we may only get so far as the one batch. It has been a lot of work to get it this far, and now because of the exceptionally rogue pricing rise, its seeming like this is as far as it will go with Bitfury, unless of course they change their mind, or people are willing to pay around double for the rigs we are building. I'd be interested to know if anyone out there would be potentially up for paying $700 ish for an 8 chip Drillbit board? Not sure that i would, but hey maybe.

As for the motives behind the price rise, i don't really know what its alkl about, but i think its to do with trying to sell giant amounts to single buyers or companies rather than smaller bunches to groups of enthusiasts like us. Whether that will work however is yet to be seen. See how we go. I'm hoping that they will see the error of their ways and bring the prices back to something reasonable. If that happens, we will open up batch 2 for sure.

But regarding the time and effort put into making this tech, its not all a waste.  Smiley Once this project is done, we will be moving onto a new board for a new chip. Not sure what yet, but part of the design idea for the Drillbit System is that it will be upgradeable as next gen chips become available, so new Drillbit Gen 2 boards will be able to fit into your existing system. It may not be possible to mix and match old and new boards depending on the nature of whatever the new chips might be, but if it is, we will buildit that way, and if not, the new boards will at least work with the existing miniplanes. So not all is lost. Definitely stay tuned for future projects once all thuis Bitfury businessd is said and done.

Cheers.

Barntech

Have you talked about batch pricing with dave or are you just refering to the price for the available sample chips?

BR

I am referring to the new batch pricing. I'm not sure that its appropriate for me to be disclosing it publicly for now, but i can tell it is a lot higher. Things may be changing on their end. Not sure. Will definitely keep you posted.

Well if you are considering other supplier's chips, the I think your options are hashfast and cointerra.

I don't think we want to go with Avalon or BFL.  I don't believe KnC have announced chip sales.

Cointerra via email are already shipping sample chips and will be selling in batches of 10TH @ 5.99/GH, 50TH @ 5.49/GH, and 100TH @ 4.99/GH.
They also are aiming for mid December shipping of chips.

Both of the above would not lend themselves to mini plane rigs, as HF needs liquid cooling and cointerra will be 500GH/chip.

I have made contact with Cointerra, Hashfast and AMC. We'll see what comes back. Interesting to hear your info from Cointerra. Maybe they could be a goer. If you don't mind, could you possibly send me whatever info you have from them via PM?

Cheers

Ha! mixed chip rigs, now that'd be interesting. Franken-miner!

Hehe.

Yeah we'll see. May not be possible. All depends on the design of the chips. Regardless, the general design and functionality will be the same.  Grin

That really is great news about the system backwards compatibility.  If only Sony etc al would take your lead.

If the current Drillbit systems rocks my socks I'll be very interested in what else you guys can cook up.

ps would love to see some pics of the actual boards when they arrive Smiley

Yeah for sure. Boards are arriving this week.  Smiley

Not sure why i can't edit posts here, but just wanted to add one more stipulation.

Bids of the same value are taken in order that they were placed. Eg an earlier bid of $350 trumps a later bid of $350. First in first served unless the price is raised.

As of now, 7 left.  Smiley

So we are down to our last few chips. We have had an overwhelming response from everyone. Thank you so much to all those involved in this project. It's very exciting seeing it coming into fruition. From the start, we had hoped to move into a second and third reel of chips on this, but changes in the pricing are looking to make this impossible. If things change on that front, i'll let you know and maybe we can get a second one going. In the mean time, we are moving into auction mode on our remaining chips. There are a few reasons for this, one of course is that it is an opportunity for us to generate a bit more revenue moving into the manufacturing phase of this operation. As it happens, the prices we specced out have blown out quite a lot and we are cutting it very fine in terms of covering costs for the manufacture, so a bit of extra cash will help. Another reason is to gauge what people are willing to pay for these things to see if it might be possible to do another batch at the newer higher prices. New units will have to be quite a bit more to account for the dramatic rise in chip price, but hey, if people are willing to pay it, then we will do it. See how we go. Also, please don't send through any BTC at this time unless specifically asked to. Cheers.

Happy bidding everyone.

274  Economy / Auctions / [AUCTION] 16 Fully Assembled BITFURY Drillbit Boards on: August 27, 2013, 05:36:47 AM
16 Drillbit Boards at 21.6 Gh/s up for auction

The Drillbit Board is a modular mining board that can be stacked together for expandability. Each board contains 8 Bitfury chips each with a proven hash rate of up to 2.7 GH/s with overclocking and sufficient cooling. This brings the total potential hashrate of a fully stacked Drillbit Board to 21.6 GH/s per board. Orders of 4 or more boards come with a free miniplane which can take up to for boards.

The Drilbit board is part of an almost completed Group Buy of a reel of Bitfury Chips due for delivery in October. Upon receipt of the chips, we anticipate approximately 3 weeks for fabrication and manufacture which would mean these will be delivered late october / early november if we do indeed receive the chips when promised. As with all things Bitcoin, we don't have control over this bit, so the chips may arrive late. If they do, there's nothing we can do, but currently its feeling like everything is on track for October delivery.

You can find all the details you need, including photos and specs for the Drillbit System here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=266235.0

  • This auction is for completed Drillbit Boards. Each one is a standalone miner, but can also be stacked for increased hashrates.
  • Bidding will be done in $US, but payments may be paid in $US or BTC with an approipriate exchange rate to be determined at the completion of the auction. (currently ~$125 = 1 BTC)
  • Bidding starts at $350 per board and can be raised in increments of $10.
  • All bids are binding and final.
  • The auction will last for 2 days

Happy bidding everyone.

Will this still be opening back up?

Everything will be back up and running in the next few hours. Sorry about the delays. Been juggling logistics on this end. I'll have responses to everyone's questions soon.  Smiley

Hey guys.

I'm back. Hope you all had a lovely weekend. It's gonna take me a little while to sort our what's going on with the remaining chips, so still for now they are unavailable. I'm really hoping we can move into a second reel, but currently, the price scenario is still a major blockage. Anyways, stay tuned. I'll try not to keep everyone waiting for too long.

Ok, so i'm off for the weekend. Signing off now. Please don't try to place any orders or make any payments for the next couple days. I'll be back here on Monday afternoon / evening Sydney time. Next week should be exciting with the boards coming back and the chip order basically filled. There will be the possibility for a few more orders and then we are done. I'm looking into opening up a second reel buy, but it may prove simply not achievable in the new pricing structure from Bitfury. See how we go. Next week i'll have shipping details and begin chasing up payments for assembly that hasn't been payed for and shipping. We will also be getting heatsink and case options happening soon. And of course news on the prototype. Have a good weekend everyone.

Barntech, have you seen what Burnin Mining has said regarding overclocking Bitfury chips?
He said this:

Quote
BitFury, and i will again be trying to push these chips further then the competition.
Target is 5Ghash/s per chip or more.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=179769.msg2981334#msg2981334

Is this even possible? I know you mentioned 2.7Ghash/s or so, but this is almost double that. You might want to send him an email and this might explain why the price of chips went up 270%...

(Not trying to create any friction btw, this is purely something that could benefit us all.)

Thanks,
IAS

From all that we've read, pushing the chips much past 2.7Ghs is chip melting territory. That said, our board design has plenty of power and overclocking ability, so once we get the boards back this week we will push it as hard as we can and see what is possible. You will get all the updates. We'll tell you what we think a reasonable stable hashrate is, and what it is possible to push it to. See how the testing goes next week.

A potentially ugly, but serious, question: Is this a fair assessment for mining for 2 fully assembled Drillbit boards?  http://mining.thegenesisblock.com/a/ae24d25426

I've put in the current PayPal cost, power use assuming 1W per chip, and middle shipping fee based on the range Barntech has been saying.  I left the difficulty, diff increase, pool fee, and BTC exchange rate as the default values.  Set misc cables to $0 on the assumption I can fit the boards inside my pre-existing cases with pre-existing power supplies.

I'm curious what scenarios others envision?  Are we all just assuming the exchange rate goes up to make any ROI here?  Or are people betting diff increase isn't accurate?   Or are we resigned to be hobbyists?

IMHO, it's a fair assessment. Maybe a month or two either way but the end result is the same. We're hobbyists.

If you put our numbers into here http://www.coinish.com/calc it does come out as favorable, suggesting that these boards will provide ROI and go on to make some profit. Nothing is sure though in Bitcoin land, especially difficulty, so its hard to tell. Like with most things bitcoin, its a gamble, and it may well pay off, and i guess even if it doesn't, it won't be far off and we've all had some fun while doing it. I'd say yes, we are hobbyists. But we might also make a decent return here. I hope so. Personally i do this stuff because i enjoy it. I've actually got my old GPU miner still chugging away in the corner giving me 3 GH/s, even though its probably costing me more for power than it makes. Go figure. These boards are different though because their power draw is much much less, so than can chug away for the next 5 years without making much of an imprint. And hey BTC might go up hugely. Who knows. But yes, none of us are going to become overnight millionaires here, but we might make a bit of money, and certainly get to enjoy being a part of something big,  new and exciting. At least, that's how i feel about Bitcoin. Hope you guys agree.  Grin
