Nice setup! Out of curiosity, what's a standard rate for your colo? The lowest rate I found is $135/m/device but they want a year-long contract. That's no beuno...

Have you found anywhere that will do it for $ 135 per month that is accepting new miners?     I been having an issue finding a colo that is open (and looks reputable).

As for power.  My calculations are that a miner will cost (at 10 cents per KWH), around $ 100 per month in electricity.   I know everyone can get electric at 6 cents per KwH, check your bill.   Delivery fees, admin fees, and your "out the door costs" are likely at 10 cents per KwH.

So if my electricity costs $ 100  per month, I think if I could find someone to deal with all the noise, cooling, etc, for $ 35.00 per unit, I would do it..

If you find someone hosting for $35.00 a month and .10 cents a kw/h you've found someone doing it at basically a loss. You have to think about all the things that go in to a *real* hosting facility. Bandwidth, virtual security, physical security, air handling equipment, electricity costs for lights, network gear, air handling equipment, the building, taxes, insurance, etc, etc. It's not trivial

Now if you find Fred the internet hero who says he can do it in his "building" I'd be very, very cautious.

First off listen to Phil Smiley

But I'd like to add my 2 cents.

Here's some steps you need to take 1st.

How much power can you get to that garage? Find that out now, not when you order miners.
Do you have any type of neighborhood association?
Do you have a sound ordnance?
Do you have neighbors that complain or will complain?

Let's say you get past all that, like Phil mentioned you need to work on heat removal not cooling addition. Read through this forum there's all kinds of tips and tricks. I've posted some, but there's so many other more experienced folks who have as well.

Finally ask yourself some technical questions. Do you know what DNS and DHCP are? Do you know what a staic IP is? Do you know why you should run 220v instead of 100v for these things? Do you know what the maximum continuous load on a 30A circuit should be?

I don't care if you know these things right now or not, BUT before spending a lot of your hard earned money you should find out.

That's probably more like 4 cents Smiley

...

I am in Texas as well and have 3 Antminers and 2 Pangolin M3s which I think equal about 75 S9s Smiley Anyway you're thinking about cooling incorrectly, what you need to think about is removing the waste heat. I made a thread called ducting check it out. The goal is to simply get the heat out of the garage. By doing just that I reduced the temp approx 30 degrees. Even the brutally hot M3s are staying pretty even.

Also your CFM requirements are waaaaaay too low. Figure around 225 CFM per miner! S9s are around 5000 BTU each, these M3s are over 6000.

Garage temp at the time of this pic was ~ 75 deg F. If I had a fresh air source it would be even better and possibly help cool that HotFlash M3... But this is just a temp setup until I find a suitable building.

I am having problems when I power on/off my L3 and S9. My bitmain power supply are stop working, luckly I received tripled in my bitmain order and I still replacing them without problems.

The bitmain power supply power on and its fan works but do not power on my L3 or S9. If switch power supply L3 and S9 works fine.

Dunno if doing it right? Is there any protocol? Need I follow some steps in order to power on/off?

Thanks in advanced.

Are you 110v or 220v?
267  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Question regarding AS9 14th/s Wattage consumption on: February 20, 2018, 04:16:43 PM
10 s9s should not draw more than ~65-70 amps unless you have terribly inefficient power supplies. Have you confirmed the readings with another device?

We've been talking in PMs. Since he's colocated I am curious if something else got plugged in to his PDUs. Not sure if he has outlet metered PDUs or not, but that'd be a quick way to tell.

Agreed on the PSUs as well.

Hi everyone

i would really appreciate providing me with websites where i can purchase rack mounts for my s9 antminers and their power supplies and any other accessories i may use for them as well

Thank you

If you use those search terms you'll get hits Smiley Graymatter makes some 7U setups I believe.

Top of the morning Party People,

I was wondering if anybody is successfully employing any colo's around Chicago/Naperville/Aurora area?  I am looking to move 10 miners to a colo around here and was wondering if any members have any places I should use or should stay away from?

Thanks so much and as you were....

Jerry

I believe this is the correct board to post this too...
 Shocked

Good place to do some research.

270  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: U.S 110v PSU for Antminer S9 suggestions please on: February 20, 2018, 02:00:43 AM
It only costs about $180 dollars to install a 30 amp circuit in you home. You can then run 4-5 s9’s off of that.

Is it really that cheap to run a 30 amp circuit?  What about rewiring for the outlet?

Honestly it's hard to estimate a price for all environments and areas of the country. But I would imagine if all that needed to be done was run some wire and an outlet then yeah it wouldn't be too much. **But** everyone's house/building/shed is different so just use it as a very rough guide.

Hello guys, I have a problem, one of my antminers s9 only turns on the fans when plugged in, all lights are off, no network light, no hashboards lights, nothing. Could it be that my control board is damaged Huh? what could have caused this ?? thanks in advance!!

What power supply? What voltage? You say one of your S9s, can you swap a known good PSU over?
272  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Question regarding AS9 14th/s Wattage consumption on: February 20, 2018, 01:53:03 AM
Hello,

I have 10 AS9 14th/s miners running and when I initially set them up I had 72 usable amps @ 208V.  However today they are reading 90 amps @ 208v.  I have metered PDUs, so the power is very easy to monitor, as I can check this via the LCD on the PUD and with APC's internal software.

I am not 100% what's going on and any input is welcomed.

Thanks forum too, first post but long time follower.

Jerry

Replied to the PM as well. OK you're not on 110v good Smiley What PSUs are you using? Have the temps risen?

In that cold air what temps are you seeing?

Right now, at 32(23 real) outside and 55 in the garage, I'm getting inbetween 77 to 84, depending on the wind gusts really. The ole
garage isn't quite air tight, and I literally have nothing behind my house but open fields, for 2 miles. I've been monitoring them for
about 15hrs, and they've been very consistent since they warmed up. Still getting 11.9 -12.8 th/s.

Good info thanks! These things like to run at high 70s to mid 80s regardless of the ambient temp it seems. I was getting almost the exact temps as you with 60 ish deg intake air. Today it was in the mid 60s and my garage heated up to mid 70s so they are running anywhere from 81-85.
275  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Turned a shipping container into a mining farm on: February 19, 2018, 01:43:32 AM
This has been discussed a couple of areas on the net, including this forum, but I could not find any example of anyone actually doing it.

I posted on Reddit, but for those that don't frequent reddit, thought this might be helpful.

Video:

https://youtu.be/8ixllaTughM

From reddit:  Finally ready to share my mining rig shipping container. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that some of the rigs are plugged into WIFI Connected 220V switches that also have Kw meters so if I had to do a hard reset over the net, I can. Shipping container was about $2,300 delivered. Temps on cards run around 60 to 70 C. I get around 4 air exchanges a minute.

Where I build the rigs: https://imgur.com/cCBDOf1 Random build pics of container: https://imgur.com/Hun7adO

I searched a lot and could not find any amateur shipping container mining farms. There are a couple of companies that showed animated ones as a product, but I couldn't find actual builds.

I would caution everyone that it's currently 50 F in Texas, and while I might look smarter than the average bear now, when it's 115 F this summer I might have a lot of egg on my face. I do have an extra 3000 CFM fan that can be installed, and we can put a car port over the container as well. I've tried to anticipate questions with the video and pics, but am happy to stay active on this thread if anyone has any specific questions. I built the container because my warehouse only has 120 Amps of 220 available and I outgrew it, plus it was just so hot in there I didn't enjoy hanging out in it anymore.

Container has a couple of security features, and is on a piece of land operated by a friend of mine, who happens to be a welder and runs a welding shop on the property. My agreement with him was to install everything and I supply all the material. Additionally, as many cards as he wants to supply, I will supply all the other materials and builds for rigs for him. He chose 2 rigs for now. Good deal both ways..

Reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/gpumining/comments/7y7lpb/my_shipping_container_mining_rig_farm/

That's awesome! I am also in Texas and after trying with not much luck to find a suitable building to lease my friend and I are going to try a container. Although because of our brutal summers (as you well know) we plan to spray foam insulate it and then frame finish out the walls. That way there's good places to mount things and it will (hopefully) keep the outside skin from transferring too much heat inside. I am also planning to orient the intake and exhaust a bit different from you. I worry about drawing the air in on one end and exhausting it out on the other might cause uneven cooling of the equipment, especially in the back. Going to do it like the image below which should keep all equipment evenly cool.

Not trying to be negative, as you've done a lot of good work!! Keep us posted on how it does.
276  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Pangolinminer & Whatsminer FAQs on: February 19, 2018, 01:21:23 AM
I'm up and running. I had one, little hiccup, with the cgminer gui. It did not want to accept a pool change, and would not start.
Did a reset, and it took care of it. Also, where I'm at, it's about 20 degrees Fahrenheit. I had to put them in the garage temporarily,
and it took some time for them to heat up completely. So far, everything is working as it should. I'm seeing speeds at/near 13th/s.

In that cold air what temps are you seeing?
277  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S9 not working. on: February 19, 2018, 01:19:08 AM
The fans of the miner are spinning but it doesn't light up any of the LED lights nor Ethernet lights. Cant even connect to it through IP. I tried to flash the firmware but doesn't work.

Does anyone know the solution?

Firstly how are you powering the miner? What voltage?
278  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Bought a Hacked Antminer S9 - Help please on: February 19, 2018, 01:01:07 AM
This is what I got after I configured my three pools. None of mine worked, showing nothing in the mine status page.

It is interesting that you have those 3 connections if you have not configured the device. Have you tried changing the configuration to mine using your pool URLs?

Who do you use for your pool?

The reason I ask is that most of these pools are hosted in the cloud. So the IP address you see in netstat is just one of the AWS nodes.

Here's an example of Slushpool

I should say, that this doesn't mean you miner is safe, but if the node is part of your pool's setup then you should be clear in that aspect.
279  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Mining Electricity Questions (AMP-Breaker) on: February 19, 2018, 12:39:49 AM
Hey guys, I plan on installing maybe 10 miners in my garage. The thing is that I know each miners needs to be plugged on a 15 AMP breaker minimum, so technically ill need 150 AMP to make this project work. The issue is when i checked on my breaker at home I believe theres a maximum of 200 AMP for the whole house (maybe im wrong im not very good with these stuffs). What can I do? Can I call an electrician to install more breakers...? I don't really know if thats possible.. If someone know better let me know please it would help me a lot, thank you for your time

Call an electrician for sure. But, let's assume you are picking up 10 Antminer S9s. That's roughly 70A at 220. To cover 10 you'll need 4 30A circuits with 3 per circuit so you might as well buy 12 miners or round down to 9 Smiley Depending on how many you decide on, and you should always plan for growth, the electrician will probably recommend a 100-125A subpanel if your main panel has the capacity.

That's staying on the safe side, you *could* make 4 miners per circuit work, but you want you and your family to be safe so never run more than 80% of a circuit's capacity continuously.

Now you also have to address heat and noise, have you actually been near one? They are incredibly loud, like 80DB loud. And the heat is roughly 5,000 BTU. Now figure 10 of those and you need serious heat removal in addition to all the noise they make. You might just pick up 1 and go from there.

What would you recommand for the heat removal? And yeah I currently have 2 miners running, but i wanted to install some more, the garage is big

For 10 miners? A very high CFM exhaust fan. 2500 CFM or so at least. Then you'll want a way to draw in fresh air, if you have windows you can use one as an intake and one as exhaust if they are not too close together and not too small.
280  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: February 18, 2018, 03:58:44 AM
I have a prediction for all the naysayers. Let posit that BTC difficulty and price come to where there is basically no profit to be had. Some folks will still mine with free or almost free electricity, like Phil. But I would imagine with all this hardware out there that it would not be much more than just a firmware flash away to mine something else. Maybe that's SHA256 based or? Who knows, innovation is always driven by these kinds of events.

That's not to say buying this equipment isn't a risk. But I imagine we'll always find a use for it.
What do you mean? These machines can only mine SHA256 with the ASICs they are outfitted with (as ASICs are built to do one thing), and they can only hash SHA256 as a result and nothing else. Flashing them to mine something other than a SHA coin wouldn't work. Flashing for more algos only worked on the Baikal alt miners a while back as they were FPGA based iirc.

Maybe, also maybe someone else comes out with another SHA256 coin, or maybe something we haven't thought of. Just never say never...

I just find something like that exceptionally unlikely. If there were to be another SHA256 coin that comes out (happens very often), it'll likely be mineable by regular SHA ASICs, and there are plenty of algos besides SHA out there that are more popular for new coins. If you're looking into buying an S9 I wouldn't count on a miracle like this happening though, always plan for the worst.

Yes, thank you. I am not naive, just optimistic.
