2621  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Can I get some clarification on this BFL product? on: April 14, 2013, 12:50:39 PM
Am I incorrect in thinking that 5 GH/s is 5000 MH/s?
At $274 (assuming BFL ever gets their shit together) isn't that an excellent deal

It was a better deal at $150 when I preordered mine.  I'm just ticked off with my self for using Bitcoin for the payment.  13.4 bitcoin is worth allot more than $150 now.

2622  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Dummy Plugs - Needed any more? on: April 14, 2013, 12:39:01 PM
Like C8 said your not supposed to.  But when I don't use one on my 2nd GPU weird things happen, hashrate drops, card instability and such.  When I put a dummy plug on one card and the monitor or the other and extend the desktop everything is stable.  I'm using Win7 32bit.

So, thank the US Government for giving us the tools to destroy thier own currency system someday Cool Grin

Our currency was destroyed when we went off the Gold Standard.

Bitcoin won't destroy, but replace a dying system, hopefully.

Well, that is true enough. The graph of total US debt started going straight up in the 70's when that occured.

Maybe the better way to say it is they gave us the tools to fix it ourselves since obviously they cannot.

I agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment!

I don't pool hop so I switched to PPLNS. Thanks for the tips bro.

Hope it pays off for you.
Take Care,
Sam
2626  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: What pool should i use? on: April 14, 2013, 02:17:11 AM
I just switched to BTCguild. When I started mining there was only PPS and proportional. Now there is PPLNS and DGM. I want to understand but im struggling.

If you switch pools allot PPS would be better.  But if you stick with a pool for a long period of time, weeks/months/years then DGM or PPLNS would be better.  DGM and PPLNS type of payouts are an attempt to discourage Pool hopping.

It sounds like your a long term miner so I would use PPLNS at BTCGuild which will require a stratum based miner like CGMiner.  Also setup multiple pools in case BTC Guild goes down like it did recently.  Deepbit would be a good backup pool.

Deepbit seems to be losing people and BTCguild seems to have the most people. BTCguild PPS is 5% vs deepbit 10%. Im guessing BTCguild is the place to be right now?

I can't believe anyone would be mining PPS at Deepbit.  That just makes no sense.  Over time you would do much better using a Proportional, PPLNS or DGM payout than 5 or 10% PPS.

Also I would not mine on a pool that has 0% PPS as that will cause the pool to go out of business or the pools is doing something nefarious with the hash rate.

Again review the Mining Pools list and pick two or three you like and setup failover.

BTC Guild and Deepbit are both good and reliable pools and I'm sure some of the others are too.

Using guiminer w/ cgminer - The ambient temp gets really hot where I live in the afternoon and im normally at work - what is the best way to maintain a target temp.

Can I just put "--auto-gpu 75" into the flags section in guiminer to adjust to temp? Is that how it works?

The top post of this thread has all of the information plus the examples you need to do what you want.  Just look at the executive summary section.

Horrible luck today.   I need to be banned from luck based mining.

I really despise the term "luck" in Bitcoin mining, in all areas of life actually, but especially in BTC. Isn't there a more better technical term for random probability than LUCK?

Anyway, what other type of mining is there?

Maybe eleuthria could pay you to mine elsewhere? Wink

DrG,
Maybe you could post your mining schedule so that the rest of us could be on other pools? Smiley

I mean I know I'm being a narcisist

Hmm, I think narcissist is the incorrect term here.  The proper one escapes me at the moment.

essentially nothing for 8 hours of 22GH mining on a 37 million share block.

So you have 22Ghs of equipment and are going broke?  Feel free to send all of your mining hardware to me.  That way we can see if your bad LUCK follows you or your mining equipment.  May be a worthwhile test, for me anyway. Smiley

I'd love to but I'm a bit busy predicting what the network hashrate

Now that sounds a little narcissistic. Smiley

organofcorti,
Have you ever read Asimov's Foundation series?  I have often compared you mathematicians here in the BTC community to phsychohistory foundation's.  Your real name isn't Hari is it?

Sorry for fueling this OT line.

I have been using deepbit forever. Wondering if there is a better pool nowadays? What makes a good pool? Only thing I can think of is fee's.

What makes a good pool?  Well that is something different for  each of us.  If you want to compare pools here is a good starting point

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=104664.msg1146108#msg1146108

I would just suggest having more than one pool and use CGMiner and set up a failover list so that you keep mining during a DDoS or other outage.

2633  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: No ADL when running Nvidia and AMD GPU on: April 12, 2013, 11:40:53 PM

It's precompiled in the Windoze binary from ckolivas.
2634  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: No ADL when running Nvidia and AMD GPU on: April 12, 2013, 11:05:57 PM
I have tried gpu map, but I do not think that is applicable to this situation unfortunately.  A command to ignore the nvidia card would be a good start, anyone else able to offer assistance?

Found the information in the top post to disable a GPU

--device|-d <arg>   Select device to use, (Use repeat -d for multiple devices, default: all)
--remove-disabled   Remove disabled devices entirely, as if they didn't exist

So if you want to disable GPU 0 use

-d 0 --remove-disabled

No idea if this will help or not.  Can't say I've ever seen your situation before.

If Viceroys suggestions don't work then I would try moving the cards to different slots to swap the order so that the Nvidia is GPU 1 and then disable it.

Just grasping at straws.

2635  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: No ADL when running Nvidia and AMD GPU on: April 12, 2013, 09:19:16 PM
Nope, I rolled back to SDK v2.5 and put a dvi to vga adapter into my 6850 with no result.

Did you try the GPU Map command?

In the CGMiner Top post there is this command and explanation

--gpu-map <arg>     Map OpenCL to ADL device order manually, paired CSV (e.g. 1:0,2:1 maps OpenCL 1 to ADL 0, 2 to 1)

Other than that there is also a command to completely ignore a GPU but I can't remember what it was.  If you can figure that one out maybe you can tell CGMiner to completely ignore the NVidia card.

Hopefully someone on the CGMiner thread has a better suggestion for you.
Good Luck,
Sam

What OS?
Windows 7 64-bit
What Catalyst version?
13.1 Note: I also uninstalled CCC because I thought it might have been interfering with Nvidia Control Panel.  Same before and after.
What ATI/AMD SDK version?
2.8
Did you post in the CGMiner Thread?
No, but I should, I will do that right now.
Did you try a monitor or dummy plug on each GPU?
Do you mean just switch the DVI cable to the 6850?

I think there is an issue with CGMiner and SDK 2.8.  Do search in the CGMiner thread to verify that.  I would roll the SDK back to something prior to 2.6 for 6000 series GPU's

With my 5000 series GPU's I'm using Catalyst 12.1 and SDK 2.5 that seems to be really stable for me on Windoze 7 32bit.  I'm not sure what the best is for your 6000 series cards.

I meant to have a monitor or dummy plug, which simulates a monitor, connected to each GPU.  I have weird problems when I try to run without something on both of my GPU's and the desktop extended to both.  But that may be just me.

Hi,

I switched from GUIminer to cgminer on my win7 based rig two days ago. I have two issues though that I can't seem to find the answers using the board search or google...

- The guiminer output does not show GPU temps and fanspeeds. I watch it via RDP. I noticed that I saw temps & fanspeeds once when initially configuring the box having a display connected to one of the cards. This is not a cgminer specific problem, as I have the same issue with other programs like GPUz. No clock, temp, fanspeed displayed.

- Tweaking GPU/mem clocks does not make any difference. Is this due to having CCC running in the background? Might that be related to my first problem as well?

thx
Manfred

Running RDP to the mining rig kills the GPU and crash's CGMiner and requires a reboot of the whole mess.  That's been my experience anyway.

I want to run the second GPU, an AMD 6850, all the time while using GTX 660 for monitor.  When I load up MSI Afterburner I get no info or overclocking settings for the 6850 but the 660 is normal.  But interestingly, when I use GPU-Z, I can switch to the 6850's sensors and get accurate readings on clock, temp, etc.  I can currently mine (with scrypt) with my 6850 by using gpu-platform 1 but I cannot overclock or get temp readings from cgminer.  My install order was Nvidia drivers, then Nvidia SDK, then AMD drivers, then AMD SDK.  I then removed Nvidia SDK to see if it affected the situation, but it didn't.  Thanks for any help  Grin
