Honduras Human Rights Lawyer Murdered

A leading human rights lawyer who represented several Honduran agrarian groups in disputes with large landowners was killed by gunmen on Sunday, a land rights organization said.

Antonio Trejo Cabrera, 41, was shot five times while attending a wedding in the capital, Tegucigalpa, the Peasant Movement of the Valley of Bajo Aguan said in a statement.

Trejo was a lawyer from three peasant cooperatives in the Bajo Aguan, a fertile farming area plagued by violent conflicts between agrarian organizations and land owners. More than 60 people have been killed in such disputes over the past two years. The lawyer had recently helped farmers gain legal rights to several plantations.

Trejo had also helped prepare motions declaring unconstitutional a proposal to build three privately run cities with their own police, laws and tax systems.

Just hours before his murder, Trejo had participated in a televised debate in which he accused congressional leaders of using the private city projects to raise campaign funds.

The lawyer was to travel to Washington in October to participate in hearings on the Bajo Aguan situation at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, said Annie Bird, co-director of Rights Action.

Trejo "had denounced those responsible for his future death on many occasions," said Vitalino Alvarez, a spokesman for Bajo Aguan's peasants. "Since they couldn't beat him in the courts, they killed him."

No arrests have been made in Trejo's killing.

Humanity is just a blink of an eye in the vast lifetime of the universe.

Our current state of evolution with our current capacity of perception, reflection, intelligence and scope of action is tiny moment in time.

We don't know what comes next. Many speculate, but we don't know.

So if there is Alien life that has evoluted further than ourselves, it is almost certainly beyond our reach of understanding. Such lifeforms may very well be without a physical body.

Just like animals do not really perceive us for what we really are, in that they don't understand our motives, what we're doing all day and why we're doing it, and see and treat us as one of their kind, as leaders of the herd at most, our relationship with higher alien life forms would be the same. They could easily deceive us the same way if they so wish.

how do I get a holographic bitcoin, is anyone talking about a silver bitcoin, and how do I get stickers for shops around Melbourne??? Are there any projects to promote bitcoin? I agree with Frank about OTC, and think it'd be great to get some physical currency into the world.

helloes and welcome.  Grin

holographic, physical bitcoins? casascius makes those: https://www.casascius.com/

but they're just a gimmick. Anyone can make such, and you have to trust the issuer that they didn't keep a copy of the private key. The point of Bitcoin is that you don't have to trust anybody. That's how and why Bitcoin works. Therefore, there won't be serious physical coins. For meatspace, use mobile clients instead, or the upcoming bitcoincard.

Are there any projects to promote bitcoin?

They're now where the rest of the world was last year, with the generally negative perception of Bitcoin (which became better this year).

I don't think it's evidence of "fiat currency conspiracy" - excluding Bitcoin from their contest is a legitimate business decision they have the freedom to make as a private company.

ahem, isn't that MintChip thing semi-public, i.e. the Canadian government is behind it?

was well expected  Cheesy

Probably they're gonna make an excuse that they "merged" some proposals? The winning entry "A digital currency can be used for purchasing virtual items in video games, removing the middle man such as paypal and credit card companies." sounds like Bitcoin may be included in this.  Roll Eyes

Ladies and gentlemen, we can say it's official now, Bitcoin is not a welcome guest in their club.

Starbucks promises support for iOS 6 Passbook at end of September

The official Starbucks application for iPhone will be updated at the end of September to add support for Passbook in iOS 6.

The update on Passbook support from Starbucks was revealed on the coffee chain's official Twitter account on Friday, as noticed by iDownloadblog. Once the update is made available, customers will be able to access their Starbucks store card through Passbook when visiting one of the chain's retail locations.

Starbucks support has been shown by Apple in demonstrations of Passbook and iOS 6. But when iOS 6 became available for download this week, the coffee maker was not among the list of companies supporting Passbook at launch.

In fact, the initial list of Passbook supported apps in the iOS 6 App Store is missing a number of companies that had been advertised, including Apple's own retail store application. Since Wednesday, support for Target, American Airlines and United Airlines have been added, but Delta Airlines, Amtrak, W Hotels, and Starwood Hotels remain missing.

maybe it'll be possible for most to earn their income with their computers running calculations. Think Bitcoin mining, but many more diverse tasks, via a good infrastructure with a website, client and plugins so that a proper market can flourish. GPUs will be useful again. A distributed high performance grid.

I also think that Captchas are really annoying. For smaller niche websites, some JavaScript/CSS trickery, honeypot fields or Askimet should suffice.
