I personally think OgNasty's explanation is ridiculous. It's the same as playing poker with the mindset of trying to win back money you have previously lost. Some people do this of course but for a serious player there is an expected value and you invest based on it and what happens, happens.
Of course it can be smart to lower your average price if the entry point was really bad. For example, if someone bought bitcoins at $10+ and is still hoarding them, buying now would make sense if you want to get your average entry closer to the current price. But I just can't see how this could be a significant explanation for the sticky $5 price.
My explanation is fairly simple, I just think that Bitcoin growth rate at the moment is fairly close to the inflation of the money supply. Secondary reasons are psychological reasons and the fact that leveraged rallies have been less crazy for a number of reasons ever since we had the massive long squeeze at Bitcoinica.
reminds me of mid-2000.... well, that was more like quadrupling position on some nasdaq garbage. went from 50% down to ~10% down. that's when i decided i shouldnt be throwing darts anymore I would have expected the price to go higher now that shorting is closed on Bitcoinica. bitcoinica used "play" bitcoins

Don't know about unlucky... Falling off the web for 2 days because the domain expired has more to do with it.
Same for bonuspool. Taking the server offline for hours to fark with it isn't good for business either.
dns updated for me in 3 or 4 hrs (err, well, 3 or 4 hours after I woke up... so maybe 12 or so max). i wouldnt have noticed it except for the website, miners point to 50.57.5.119

Yup, purely coincidence that the price per 20,000 shares has gone down 0.3 BTC since the last batch of invites and discussion of the PPS price started. aha!

I would have grabbed one myself... if it was, say, October, or November.. =p Seasonic and FSP Aurum Golds are the only PSU's I buy anymore. speaking of which, if anyone missed the seasonic sale: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104127FSP Group AURUM GOLD 750W.. $115 if you care to send in the $10 mail-in rebate... not to be mistaken with their crappy line of PSU's (just the regular "FSP Group" models)

I wish my electricity was 0.085 in Houston. Where do you live?
But yeah I have pretty much the same cooling setup for the room, except without the foam. And ambient here seems to be more like 10-15F above external. Good thing I run water cooling so none of my cards throttle.
The 3x5830s in the garage with a huge 120mm fan blowing on it gets to 88F!
Near Chandler, Tx. I'm actually in a commune area, so can't choose my own electricity provider.... if I could, there are some options out there that are cheaper than .085c... and to be honest, it was just .085c "adjusted" last month. They charge 10.5c standard, but they always have some adjustment downwards in the next bill. The last 3 months it's been 2c, 1.5c, 1.5c (but then prior to that there were a few 1c, .05c, etc.) It's probably more like .0925c on average, I guess.. You should check out: http://www.powertochoose.org/_content/_compare/compare.aspxIf you're not saddled with some commune, you should be able to get rates under .10c, at least... The humidity in Houston would be killer, yeah, that'd be harder to keep the ambient down.. (and I just checked a few Houston zips, like the same companies are offering the same plans for 1-2c more.... but for Pasadena zip 77503 at least, you have some 8.7c fixed option) (and another edit, it's 90o outside and my 3x5830 (sapphire extremes) are at 66o with card fan at 65%.... floor fan blowing into case.... but i have them set to 1.063v instead of 1.163v.... @ 920core/195memory, it's ~293mhash/s.... at night I set them to 990/195 1.163v and they get about ~325mhash/s... not a huge diff)

I have a hard time sleeping w/o hearing a fan of some sort going....

Low 90's here in Texas where I'm at. I've got all but one of my cards in one room (5x5970, 2x5870, 3x5830) and only undervolt the 5830's. The room is sealed off w/ some special foam junk & I have some industrial fan (120watts) blowing air in from the window (and sealed off any area on the bottom that the fan wasn't occupying) & venting out the top (window opens both ways). The top is only open about 6", any more and it'd be less efficient. It passed the, uh, paper test, where I drop a piece of paper and it gets sucked in and sticks to the screen.
Ambient in there is probably 5oF over whatever it is outside. So, maybe, 95o during the day. I also have floor fans blowing into each of my computers. Electricity is only ~.085c per kwh, though.

Since when is a photograph needed for identification? Are we applying for passports? My verification was denied because I clipped off the extraneous photo and obscured my DL #. The same photo was used to provide proof of residence to OVH and EntroPay... shrug. They can have my photo if they like, I don't really care.... as for DL, or SSN, or whatever.... yeah, ok, I still get spam mails about bitcoin shit in my email.

yeah, PSU is the most important part. if you buy a good one it'll last for half a decade or more. i have an 850w thermaltake toughpower that i've had chugging along since.... probably 2006...
anyway, I've been happy w/ my seasonics... but also the aurum FSP gold, it's maybe $10 or $20 cheaper

6950's aren't good to buy for mining, unless you're also going to be using it as a gaming card.
You can put together a 3x5830 system for $500 (or less), that's about 1ghash

I couldn't initiate a transfer, since my Dwolla account was 'pending verification'. Issue has nothing to do with the delay with the processing of Dwolla withdrawals. No withdrawal took place. ed: It appears as if it has been "verified". It is a bit bizarre that it lists the 'Dwolla' withdrawal method at the very bottom, below 'US Dollar (Dwolla)'. https://mtgox.com/press_release_20120418.htmllol I started a withdrawal.

Alright, so I am running at these clocks on the 650watt rig so far: 800/300, v1.4 (wasn't stable at 1.125; 0.95 crashed in less then a few seconds)
It's been stable for a little over 24 hours. Pulling 420w from the wall. Each card is getting about 260MH/s, with a total of 780 MH/s. Will buy a 750w in a month or two so I can run each card at 330MH/s. (Using BAMT for everything)
1.14, right? I think for a sapphire extreme at least, the wattage being drawn is the same for anything up to 0.95, then 0.951 to 1.063 then 1.063 to (whatever? or is there another step after 1.163?)

I just looked... I withdrew a couple hundred from Dwolla on 5/9 and it was posted to my bank balance on 5/10. Another on 4/24 arrived on 4/25.
Not sure how it'll work now, w/ their new ToS.
My only problem has been it taking up to 10 days to transfer from MtGox to Dwolla.
|
|

was going to withdraw with dwolla anyway, but this 'withdrawal center' thing has been pending verification of my dwolla account (I guess??) for the last 12 hours or so

I will try dropping to these clocks to hopefully lower how much power (watts) I am drawing. 900/300 v0.95
I have another machine that runs three, stable with 1000/300 v1.163 on a 750watt. I will use this machine to help find a good clock to lower the power intake. Will post results within a few hours...
i run three at 920/195 @ 290mhash or so at 1.063v, performance level 2 three 5830 on 630w would be fine even overclocked i'd think, if you ran it off a usb stick, had no peripherals, underclocked the MB and single core CPU, turned off onboard audio, serial port, and anything else you didnt need, and used a rly energy efficient monitor (~15 watts)

I think we will see a "rotation" or a "shift" of miners when the difficulty goes up.
The new and more efficient miners will push the less efficient/profitable miners out of the market. The difficulty will probably keep going up slowly, but this effect should keep it in check somewhat.
oh, the people that mine for a loss will drive the profitable miners out of the market? surely you arent talking about those $500 FPGAs i'd rather get pushed out by the hordes of zombified computers

From what I can notice, it seems the hashrate is increasing alot every single day over the last 9days.
The mystery miner is having a ball, relaying all their blocks via known pools I guess. I see no reason to assume the mystery miner is back in business. Hashrate has been creeping up steadily for months, will only a small dip around bip16: http://bitcoin.sipa.be/speed-lin.pngLooks like a trend continuing. This next difficulty is on route to total sadness.
Its only going to get worse IMHO, as all those FPGA are being switched on, and unlike GPUs, almost no one will switch them off again. if you feel bitcoins will be successful , then yes, it will only get worse long term (ed: as in mining, then selling immediately). i could have bought microsoft shares in 1986, after all as for FPGA, this is something only someone doing this as a hobby would buy, since there is no profit in these at the moment. they won't be a serious factor for a while
